I don't know if he's "underrated", maybe a little less widely known? He's buds with Satriani, Vai, Ian, Holt, etc. so anyone who knows anything about guitar knows who he is. He can destroy most guitarists imo as far as laying down the serious metal and his solos are hardly anything to scoff at. The guy is a fucking beast.
I agree he's great but he's pretty highly rated among people who play this style of music. I guess the masses not so much be he also hasn't released a ton of music is I guess I agree on that front.
I remember watching Home Movies back in the day thinking, "whoever they have doing the guitar parts for Dwayne is actually really good". I then looked into it and found out just HOW good 😯
Important to remember: this dude not only plays those hard riffs live, but he also has to sing all of the songs while doing it... talk about someone who is extremely good at what he does, props to Brendon Small, a guy who definitely inspires me.
Brendon small has always been one of my biggest influences because of how much he can do and how good it all is. However, he disappoints me with how little work he does nowadays. His art and humor shaped my life. I wish he did more, made more shows, did more stand up, played more concerts besides the baked potato, anything to continue his legacy and age with his fans. Sometimes I think he probably doesn't even realize how much of an impact he had over the millions who grew up with Metalocalypse and Home Movies.
It takes this kind of person to make a cartoon band in a comedy show sound better than most Metal bands in its era. I can't imagine how much hardwork he went through to achieve this level of greatness. Brandon is truly one of the greatest.
So nonchalant. He has a blank, almost bored gaze while playing this. I'd look like I was trying to poop out a watermelon...neck and forehead veins all popped out. Dude has mad skills.
It's honestly a LOT easier to do this kind of stuff if you can basically just shut everything off. Especially when also doing vocals while playing. Kind of have to think about neither or you trip over your own brain.
Love when he answers with more guitar. He considers talking to reply to some questions; but; quickly concludes that just playing to highlight whats being asked is the best answer.
I can’t believe it’s been 3 years. This video led me to discover troy Grady’s universe and finally transformed me into a lead guitar player. Love you forever troy.
I remember hearing Thunderhorse for the first time, blew me away. What an epic arrangement, then I found out it's one dude with a line 6 pod set to a metallica preset. Knock me down with a feather
So happy to see you have him on here. I love brandon's playing, his creativeness, and how he articulates what he does. He makes it really to understand what hes doing
His right hand technique is impressive yes, but it’s not really strength. If that’s your approach you’re going to hit walls in trem picking speed in consistency. The key economy of motion and reducing tension as much as possible rather than building it.
I'd love to see Dave Davidson (Revocation)! I saw him live a few times, the guy can play crazy string skipping stuff at a high tempo, and it looks very effortless!
YES! I've been waiting quite some time for this one! Brendon's playing in Home Movies was one of my biggest influences for learning the guitar! Thank you guys so much!
His playing really is cool. Icarus 66 is easily one of my favorite rythm parts in all of metal. Brandon, if you ever see this, I LOVE all of your stuff but the Galaktikon stuff is REALLY creative and interesting. I love playing guitar, and am very technically proficient (I can play most anything given enough time) but I REALLY struggle with writing cool creative riffs on my own and you are a big inspiration for me to keep trying.
Big ups to Brandon Small for this considering the legal limbo Metalocalypse and dethklok sits in. Would love to see you link up with Brian Eschbach from The Black Dahlia Murder for video like this because his rhythmic assault is amazing and "What a Horrible night to have a curse" is nothing short of a marathon for death metal guitarists everywhere
Whenever I heard thunder horse on guitar hero when I was little got me into them, thunder horse will always be one of my favorites. Thank you, Brendan small.
Great idea for a guest, Troy! The metal rhythm picking is something that feels fresh for this channel, especially the downpicking and galloping. We had some of that with Teemu but the more thrash-oriented riffing style analysis is really informative.
Whoever was filming this did a good job asking questions. Questions that make sense, and got brendon to explain things, also in a way that makes sense. Nice work boys. Super helpful
"I haven't watched the tapes." Quintessential. So much love for everything I've seen B.S. do is astonishing. Huge guitar theory inspiration firstly of course.
Troy knew about carona all along; his real mission was to give the world something to do in quarantine. He's a samaritan from the future, and the future is now.
The (ego)maniac himself sits down for my favorite lad, Troy Grady! The Home Movies maker himself. Looking forward to this big time. As always, your work is absolutely incredible Mr. Grady, thanks for releasing this for us.
I'm guessing there's an inside joke there with the "ego" comment because Brendon is totally the most self-effacing dude ever! He let it all hang out in this interview, good or bad.
My first view of anything on this channel. I love the concept of discussing the mechanics of metal riffs, and the picking hand camera work. Subscribed!
That intro riff, he played that in his betcha can’t play this, put it in an article in GW, then played it here years later. He’s so proud of it! 😂 Obviously I’m a huge fan. This man made me pick up the guitar and for that i thank him a LOT. I practise hard to get on his level some day. And i really, really, REALLY want to see him live someday but i think my chances are very bad here in europe. Come on Brendon! You won't regret it. I can definitely promise you that. 🤘🏻😁🎸🎶
Bought a thunder horse a few months ago, shipped it to Australia where it was broken in transit. Neck absolutley destroyed. Had it fixed which took 4 months, mainly due to humidity slowing down paint time. Finally have it back and its probably going to be a show piece due to the threat of more damage if played with too much vigour. Absolutley love the guitar and all of Brendons music. Still waiting for the Galaktikon live show though.
Be careful! The trick to this downstroke stuff is finding the technique where it generates almost no fatigue. That’s how you know it’s right. In the interview we talk about this and the only thing he complains about is his shoulder from sitting down. The arm is super relaxed the whole time.
Great guitarist, comedian, and voice actor. Dude is ridiculously talented
Hell yeah, you should do some dethklok on your channel!
Ayyy it’s dean
Oh look who it is
I worship this man
Maybe we attempt to learn some dethklok and galaktikon then 👀
Brendon Small has to be one of the most underrated metal guitar players
I'm a HUGE metalhead and have said Dethklok is some of the best metal music ever. Small writes like a fucking BEAST.

yeah his stuff is underground still only metal players know of him
go into the water is as iconic as any other metal standard
I could listen to him play all day.
He comes out of the dark randomly like once a year and its always amazing lol
The only thing that could make it better is if he had a big pair of tits and cute smile like all the UA-cam guitarists these days do.
Didnt expect to see CzsWorld here. My two worlds collide.
His style is very similar to Dethklok. Wonder if he listens to them
Hahaha. Very well done!
He said they were overrated once
Dethklok takes its inspiration from Thor von Clemson.

Brendon Small is a total badass. Totally unique style and sound, especially in a Death Metal context.
Totally. He's got a really pop / jazz hooky songwriter's ear.

Insanely difficult. Natural born talent takes the credit.

that's why metalocalypse is a phenomenon and Brendon Small is a multitalanted genius and shall never be forgotten

It is because he's so relaxed that hes able to sustain it for so long. Repetitive motion. Master it slow and then speed it up.

Hell yeah, Brendon is one of the best rhythm guitarist of all time. Dethalbum III and the first galaktikon album are amazing
He's a pretty damn good lead player too
'The Galaxy' is my favourite track but Deathalbum 3 is literal gold. G1 best track has to be 'On my way'
The alternate picking is crazy in itself, but his downstrokes are machine-like! Crazy stuff

There's that one Devin Townsend song that requires that 3-9 stretch. Needless to say I learned that song minus the one chord.
