    Couple of things from a 3d printing vet (been printing for 10+ years and ran a 3d printing company for 5yrs) that I haven't seen mentioned.
    1. 3D printing isnt an addition to your miniature hobby, its a hobby in itself. It isnt plug and play, there are so many variables and you really need enough space to print and clean. And you need a seperate room for it. Don't put it in your living room, hobby room or bedroom, see point 2.
    2. This shit is toxic, make no mistake. Lizard mentioned gloves, thats the bare minimum, invest in a good respirator, not just a facemask, that's not enough. You only get one set of lungs in this life! There isn't enough research yet on the long term effects of resin, right now it's sort of in the early asbestos stage. We weren't aware yet how much cancer it would cause long term. Treat this the same, especially the IPA with resin in it. Those fumes are gnarly. Can't stress enough, don;t cheap out on your lungs and get a respirator
    3. Don;t fall for the carbon filters they sell you. They lessen the smell. But smell is not the same as toxic fumes. Just because you can't smell it, doesn't mean its not dangerous. And like before, the main culprit is your vat of IPA once resin builds up in it.
    4. This shit is very toxic to the environment, don;'t just throw it in the sink or flush it down the toilet. Properly dispose of it, best is to put your IPA vat outside in the sun, let it evaporate and the resin inside cure. Onced hardened it can go in the garbage. Same with your supports, cure em, chuck em in the trash.
    There is probably more, but seriously, PROTECT YOUR HEALTH. Resin printing is not for people that lack common sense. Once you're safe its an awesome hobby and you can print the most amazing shit!
    @LizardofDoom Would love a pin mate :) let's keep people safe!

    Hi other Max, if you don't want to spend yuuuge amounts of money on isopropyl alcohol, when your tank is starting to get dirty, pour it into empty coke bottles and leave them on the windowsill for a few days (here in Australia) but probably closer to a few weeks over there in the sunny UK. It'll cure out all the resin in the alcohol and then you can filter the alcohol and use it again. Also, resin does not stick to silicone, so silicone mats and funnels are bigly! Also when your FEP wears out and starts sticking too hard and failing prints, you can put a bit of PTFE dry lubricant on it to get it to work for a last few prints while you wait for the new FEP to arrive (because you did not pre-order it and you need to print something for a deadline)

    • @WizardAngst
      @WizardAngst 6 місяців тому +1

      Also, for folks who want to spend more to start up with and less in the long run, DLP printers use LASERS and MIRRORS instead of an LCD screen that will burn out after ~1000ish hours whereas DLP printers last closer to 10,000. That said, in both cases you can just replace the LCD/Laser Emitter.

    It's handy to keep a little supply of the removed supports (washed and cured). If you need to do a vat clean, stand one of them in it first, run the clean, then the support becomes a little handle that you can use to help peel the layer out.

  • @chazzledazzle89
    @chazzledazzle89 6 місяців тому +1

    If you save your larger supports/raft you can put that in the corner of your vat when you run the tank clean feature. The cleaning layer cures around it so it can act as a handle to peel up the layer.

    Both of my brothers have bought 3D printers, and while one of them isn't overly enamoured with his, the younger one says it's the best hobby purchase he's ever made. I've only had him print me some bits for conversions (heads, shields, alt weapons, that kind of thing), but he's printed himself literally hundreds of proxies to use in games. He even stole an old lab-coat from his work to wear while using it. His only regret is not getting a bigger one to print terrain and monsters in, so I'd say it's a pretty worthwhile investment, but I'm biased because I get free bits.

    Get yourself another sealed tank for prewashing your prints before you throw them in the wash station. Just dip them and swish around a bit. Also remove the supports before the main wash. Your main iso tank will last much, much longer.

  • @kerbysj
    @kerbysj 6 місяців тому

    You dont really need to do the full vat drain to clean it up as all should be bonded to the bottom layer. Keep hold of some old supports. pop one in the corner. Then do the vat clean. The bottom layer will bond to the support and you can pull the support up along with the sheet of the resin.
    If things get really wrong, buy a box of 100-200ml syringes (as once they have been used once, they dont really keep unless you really wash the sh!t out of it. They are cheap and you should only need it them once in a blue moon. That way you wont need to use those funnels that are messy.
    Also get some silicone sheets and use them as your "clean up" area. Its wipeable and also if any resin cures on it, it can be picked/flaked off.
    Also if you have good results with a certain resin. dont change the brand/type without expecting a long time of dialling in settings, its not a forgiving process.

    I think it's important to know 3D printing isn't for everyone but everyone should have access to it whether it be owning your own or having a friend/company that can print for you.
    I've been printing stuff for years since the elegoo mars came out and how far printers have come since then thinking that my new elegoo Saturn 1 a few years ago was a the bee's knees to now you can get bigger better machines for cheaper.
    Yes I've printed titans and stuff but I feel the best prints are either fully IP free custom models for proxying or bitz for kit bashing.
    I often go through cycles of cranking prints out to then I have a fail and like now my Saturn has sat dormant since before Christmas.
