Russell Crowe Breaks Down His Most Iconic Characters | GQ - Розваги
Hes at the age where he needs to be cast as an middle aged medieval king or something. He oozes that character.
King of Rohan vibes
Love that idea! But a true historical figure and not some fantasy ruler.
Why are they actually always middle aged.
Robert Baratheon vibe
@@AceDeclan wise kings become wise over time in fantasy always they aren't instantly wise
Russell naturally has two faces, when he is serious he looks cold and scary like a bad dude, but when he smiles, he looks friendly lovely and warm.
His eyes look scary asf ...
The funny uncle that you must never get angry
Most definitely! His cruel side is definitely scary but highly entertaining
Yeah, true that. He definitely has a dual personality.
@@metastract he's an actor....so it's called acting.
He played Captain Jack Aubrey very well in Master and Commander, one of the best naval films in history. An underrated movie.
Russell should’ve won an Oscar for M&C, and what a magnificent movie that was. Fantastic.
A riveting, masterful story with the amazing Russell Crowe and crew!
That's what I came here for :|
He look mores like the Jack Aubrey of the novels now. He was too thin for it when they filmed it.
That is the character I was hoping he would talk about.
Master & Commander? The Nice Guys? A Beautiful Mind? This guy has done so many world-class perfomances, he doesn't even get around to 3 masterpieces!! And BTW, M&C and TNG are 2 of the most underrated movies ever. The Bettany/Crowe and Gosling/Crowe pairings were pure genius, one of drama & the other of comedy.
Yep!!
A Beautiful Mind is just epic. I love that movie so much.
I was REALLY hoping they'd include Master & Commander. That is a masterpiece right there.
Master and Commander had the horrible luck of releasing in theaters along side Return of the King. I am fully convinced if that timing were different than Master and Commander would be very well known
The next three days, Proof of life, Les Miserables, pretty amazing list of movies he has made
He is always Gladiator for me .... “ father to a murdered son and husband to a murdered wife and I’ll have my vengeance in this life or the next “ the best dialogue ever ..
That line and scene may be the top three for me in cinema ever.
That's not a dialogue, that's a quintessential monologue.
That’s not dialogue dumbass
its the line but most of all his voice, so deep, if you or i said it, it would be cringy, not if prime Russell crowe said it. i like his action movies, it suits him
Are you not entertained? Is this not why you are here?????!!!
Absolutely loved him in Gladiator. Can't imagine anyone else in that role.
They almost cast Mel Gibson
@@sgtn00dle oh god, that would have been tragic
@@rc6115 don’t even think I could have seen Gerard Butler as the Gladiator to be honest
Mel Gibson would have smashed it
Can imagine 5 or 6
I love that this wasn't a vanity fluff piece but was earnest, honest, and even self depreciating at times. Crowe seems to be in a good place in his life right now. Bravo to a champion. Well done, Mr Crowe.
I'm thinking Scrooge in the next _A Christmas Carol_ ?
Crowe in LA Confidential is one of Hollywood’s most underrated performances of all time.
LA Confidential doesn't get thr love it deserves. Titanic just overshadowed it. What a pity. Thr whole cast was amazing.
That was the first time I had ever seen him on film before. It had remained my favorite performance of his until Gladiator of course. Maximus...Crowes Magnum Opus!
@@richardkovacs2006Cromwell, Pierce, Spade, Devito and Bassinger even held her own with all the big boys in L. A. Confidential. Such a great ensemble cast of so many truly stellar performances. I felt transported back in time in that piece. So many visceral characters acted to perfection.
I still to this day get goosebumps when Maximus takes off his helmet to reveal his identity to Commodus. What a powerful scene.
It's a great film all around.
The South Park version looks true to life! He's done some great films though
Exactly
Timeless film
what a great big powerful vast big great scene wow
I remember when someone mentioned his angry behavior in an interview at one time. His response was something like "I don't owe you a good attitude. I owe you my best performance". I kind of respect that.
Def respect that
Me lol may be but I was like us and I change. And am not supérieur at Any one sorry
I think his role in 3:10 to Yuma was phenomenal. Shame they didn't even bother to mention it
That was a fantastic movie and he was fantastic in it
Yes, amazing movie 👌
This really showed Russel’s intelligence, insightfulness and willingness to learn new aspects of modern Western society.

This man must play as a king soon, it's time.
Henry VIII is what I always thought he should play.
or an emperor

King kong
@shakhir r not even close. Henry VIII was an enormous man. Not a big guy.
Finally, an actor who's not a plastic surgery disaster. Listening to one of the true stars of Hollywood in the past 20 years just talk films was really fun, just let him talk and share his experiences, great video.

@The Wraith not funny at all , he’s a legend who won an oscar so keep your opinion for yourself
@The Wraith yeah keep your mouth open while legends make history
@@at2228 I honestly think he’s a very attractive man despite gaining weight, he’s charming and you can tell a down to earth person, I think people are obsessed so much with looks it’s tiring really.
@@ittybittyyadira totally agree , he’s still hot and attractive
The Insider is so criminally underseen, I’m happy it was represented here. That and Master and Commander deserve a bigger audience.
The Insider was not just about the tobacco industry, but also the selling out of news journalism. So I could underdtand how Crowe couldn't get a handle on who was the "lead character". He and Pacino did a wonderful dance. And that it's based on true events and real people, is even more compelling.
Very vaguely remember there was going to be a Master and Commander sequel...which was either cancelled by the studio due to cost or the original didn't do well enough. It was a good movie.
@@carolyna4484 Yep it was considered a bit of a bomb. There was a lot of talk about the title not testing well and the studio not knowing how to market the movie. Ridiculous because it’s such a great film-writing, directing, characters, action set pieces, historical accuracy, all the way across the board.
Love this guy. He’s very real, for the most part. He had it all and was happy to wander. It wasn’t about money, it was just pride and artistry. He feels like a pure artist.
He still comes across as a normal dude.
I wasnt planning on sitting through the whole thing, but here I am. He’s a natural story teller
Dammit Kevin
Same with me I almost changed videos a few minutes in but he got me.
You should check out his "recent" interview on Stern. Good stuff!
Same lol
For real!
Am I the only one who is surprised that his character in Master and Commander didn't make the list?
You are not, MaC was the first title I looked for when scanning ahead in the video.
I am livid lol
Great movie
Sadly somehow what I would consider one of the greatest films of all time seemed to just slip by everyone unnoticed. I dont get why but it never got the credit it deserved. A lot of people, even the ones that would like it, don't know it even exists. I don't get it. I mean there is no other film like Master and Commander. It is one of a kind. It just feels so real. Like you are actually there in that moment in time on that ship.
Master and Commander, A Beautiful Mind, Hammers Over the Anvil, and lots more. He's promoting "Unhinged" at the end, but no amount of rationalizing will convince me that that movie isn't just a piece of garbage of the B-movie slasher variety. Bad career choice for such a great actor. Oh, I forgot to mention, he was amazing in "The Loudest Voice in the Room," but it should be a wakeup call to him that he's in the weight league now of Roger Ailes.
How could they leave out A beautiful mind! Still makes me cry. Beautiful movie 🍻
Can't talk about that, our psychologist overlords don't like being second guessed.
@@LordofDaggerfall Can you explain more? I really want to know.
I thought the exact same way. I first watched it during my psychology/sociology class. Loved it!
He is astounding in every role he has ever played. He is also one of the coolest, most down to Earth people it seems. Love you Mr. Crowe!
I can't believe you didn't have him talk about "Russell Crowe: Fightin 'Round the World" where he goes on adventures with his trusty tugboat named "Tugger"
The average Chinese man can grow up to 5 feet tall!

That decapitation was such a nice touch. It gave the character a sense of being so much at the top of his game he's bored and getting creative just to entertain himself. Really cool that Crowe came up with it, it's clear he really understood the scene he was in.
Loved the Guy Pierce story and how he so easily admitted he was a jealous guy. A genuinely lovely man 👌

And fightin round the world.
Love Russell as an actor and combined with Ridley, magnificent. Anything the duo works on, I want to see. Nobody mentions Russell's voice. Love his voice. He modulates it beautifully for a part. Gladiator, that vengeance clip, he brings gravitas to it using his eyes and that voice. Love it.

I LOVE the tone and pace of Master and Commander. It's like it's never in a rush to be the film that Hollywood wants it to be, it's stylish, it's realistic, it's a great film.
No “Master and Commander?!” That’s like having Patrick Stewart and not bringing up Picard.
Really loved this breakdown, he's such a powerful actor and very intense, but has a very soft and smiley face when he's enjoying himself. His portrayal of Bud Whit in LA confidential is why i keep watching the film over and over
No Master and Commander coverage for his role as Jack Aubrey, but his Robin Hood rendition made the cut? Come on GQ.
Agreed. Master and Commander was a fantastic film, and he was the perfect choice for Aubrey.
It’s my favorite movie
Also no Beautiful Mind, his other Oscar nom after Insider and Gladiator. I also loved 3:10 to Yuma and the Nice Guys. And it may be a trashy B movie, but I always loved him in Virtuosity. He's just had so many good roles, I suspect they recorded bits on more movies and just used the best stories.
Good point,i was waiting for it and then saw your comment and decided to watch something else.Still interesting to show how we all age.Wish i was young again.

The first time I saw Russell Crowe was in “The Quick and the Dead”. He spent most of the movie chained to a pillar in this old West town. He was totally unknown here in the U.S but Jesus, I couldn’t take my eyes off him. Saw “Romper Stomper” after that. I loved young Russell Crowe so much. And then (after “Gladiator”) he got old and doughy and had some bad report cards in the School of Being Civil to Other People and my love disappeared.
This interview was great. I’ve never seen/heard Crowe speak so eloquently and with such love towards the people he’s made movies with. So - great interview , GQ or whoever made this happen.

Imagine being SUCH a good actor (and seemingly down to earth) that you have great movies like - American Gangster, A Beautiful Mind, 3:10 to Yuma, Master and Commander and The Nice Guys and they don’t even get discussed. Wow
A Beautiful Mind is a masterpiece and he should have won an Oscar

The way he spoke about Gladiator was epic, side note, their version of Robin Hood is so underrated.

Maximillian on A Good Year - priceless movie and performance for the entire cast. Ridley Scott's masterpiece - a perfect movie.
In Gladiator, I felt so emotional thorough the movie, that was an incredible rendering. As well as, every character that he had played in other movies, were acted so realistically, that I felt as if it had really happened. My respect goes to this actor. He truly deserves the Oscars that had been given to him. 🙏

How did they not cover A Beautiful Mind??? It's one of his most amazing and iconic roles!!
I’ve just watched the next 3 days and here I am now lol Russell Crowe to me is one of the greatest actors to ever grace our screens
I don’t know how to explain this, but he’s very comforting here. Like, if I were to go into surgery then while waiting in the prep room, I’d want this Russell to comfort me with words of assurance.

@rockn roll Yeah. As someone who has done a bit of fighting, Gladiator looks so authentic.

"Russel Crowe" - great man, great actor. Seen Romper Stomper, LA Confidential, Robin Hood, Master and Commander and the truly excellent Gladiator and loved them all.
Russel Crowe in Gladiator was not only an impeccable actor, he got so deeply under the skin of his character that it's simple IMO: Maximus is my top favorite character of any movie ever made.
Awesome that you enjoyed the movie for me I think Russel had a better performance in some of his other movies not because of any criticism on his acting skills more due to the script of the movie which is one of the reasons I hear that it had to be rewritten many times during the production however with what he had he did a great performance and had some memorable lines.

LA Confidential remains one of my favorite movies, an unforgettable introduction to the acting of the relatively unknown RC. He's compelling in every role he plays.
@Susan L I may be the only person in existence put to sleep by LA Confidential. Having gotten into film noir of the American 1940s and 50s to the point of becoming a scholar on that period in that genre, LAC just comes across as a pale imitation of the period. The real grit is in films like The Narrow Margin (1952), Touch of Evil, Odds Against Tomorrow, Shield for Murder, The Asphalt Jungle, 99 River Street, Armored Car Robbery... --No offense meant, at all. Cheers,
@@johnstrawb3521 I appreciate the comments and have not seen several of the films you mention, will make a point to. I wonder what you think of Laura. Though Ellroy's novel is what it is, Hanson had little interest in imitating or reviving the noir genre, as he often stated. Anyone trying to draw too many parallels will be disappointed. Unique cultural and historical events emerge when 'stars align', and can never be truly repeated. Credit to Hanson for knowing that.

Captain Jack Aubrey is more of a kind, straightforward man with great leadership and temper. I personally found Johnny Depp Captain Jack Sparrow more legendary but that’s just me.
So true that Capt. Jack and Horatio Hornblower were great characters set in the Napoleonic wars, but Captain Morgan is the best...his rum is delicious.
@@blindlobster I'll take a look. Thanks for the suggestion.
Gladiator is still high on the list of the most emotionally riveting films I have ever enjoyed and one of Hanz Zimmer's best sound tracks as well.
Master and Commander is excellent. And 3:10 to Yuma is up there with Unforgiven, Open Range, and Tombstone as my all-time favorite westerns.
Russell's eyes are SO expressive. I was never a huge Russell Crowe fan, per se...but, he's very interesting.
"HE WAS A SOLDIER OF ROME. HONOR HIM" Lucilla to the Roman guards.
Who will help me carry him? More like who will help me roll him
I remember how transfixed I was with Russell Crowe's role as Maximus. Such a perfect movie; great acting and the story line included 'divine retribution'.
"Divine retribution", yes. But, of course, at a tragic cost.
