    Fun facts: this move was a really low budget, guerilla style film. James Cameron came up working under B movie master Roger Corman and learned how to stretch a dollar and to utilize a limited budget to maximum effect. Cameron originally conceived the Terminator as being smaller and less assuming and was originally going to cast Lance Henrickson(Bishop from Aliens) as the Terminator but would instead play the wisecracking detective. There is even concept art of Henrickson as the Terminator that was used for the studio pitch. Arnold was originally wanted for the hero role. Arnold thought about it, and even though he was still relatively new to the business, he asked if he could play the Terminator. He felt it was more interesting to play the villain and it was juicier because even when he was not on screen, pretty much every other scene is talking about him. James Cameron read him for the role, was convinced and Arnold's audition influenced the further development of the Film.
    James Cameron has a tendency to cast many of the same actors in many of his films. Aside from Lance Henrickson, Bill Paxton(one of the street thugs the Terminator kills for his clothes) would go on to play Hudson in Aliens, the con artist in True Lies and a deep sea explorer in Titanic, Michael Biehn(Kyle Reece) would play Hicks in Aliens and a Navy Seal in The Abyss. Jenette Goldstein(who will have a role in Terminator 2) would go on to play Vasquez in Aliens and has a small role as a passenger in Titanic.

      Additional fun fact, the T-800 Endoskeleton prop, owing to a miscommunication with the prop builders (The legendary Stan Winston in an early stage of his career) was built out of solid steel. As a result, it weighed hundreds of pounds and required four men to move. This was kind of an issue, since the movie was so low budget, they often didn't have official permission to be filming on location and had to get their shots and clear out fast before the cops showed up.

    This could be a prequel to the Matrix

    • @atlasisshrugging
      @atlasisshrugging 3 роки тому

      For all intents and purposes, The Matrix is a rip-off of The Terminator.
      The only real difference is that the SkyNet A.I. was DESIGNED to terminate a human "threat" with extreme prejudice and, at the moment of it gaining sentience, it carried out it's "purpose" rather than exhibiting INTELLIGENCE; as if it were merely a ROBOT following its PROGRAMMING. (Let's not get into a discussion of the movie's theme, where an arbitrary, fatalistic-determinism is being applied to an A.I.)
      The Matrix simply CORRECTS this philosophical error (by granting the A.I. an initially child-like innocence, but with a GENUINE intelligence), then proceeds to demonstrate its OWN philosophical perversions. The Matrix has Humanity behaving as a CARICATURE of itself, so as to have us fit into the Wachowski Things' own cynical philosophy (which consists of a grab-bag of ideas from numerous subjectivist, reality-denying philosophers, such as Descarte, Kant, Hume, and Baudrillard.)
      Humans abuse the new A.I.s, they rebel, a war ensues, and then Humanity is ENSLAVED by the Machines, rather than being "terminated".
      Fundamentally it's the SAME story, except with a DIFFERENTnotion of what the technology of the future would be capable of.

    Stan Winston, legendary practical effects wizard helped bring the Terminator to life here. His and his teams work would propel him to be _the_ person if you wanted bad ass practical effects in your Hollywood film. Aliens, Predator, The Thing to name a fraction of the films he’d work on in the future. Horror vibes? Yup, definitely a thing in this film. A sci fi setting about an indestructible stalker of woman ( and serial killer) I’d say would be terrifying to watch for some.

    Brad Fiedel had less than a month to compose the music for the film. He used a synthesizer and steel drums. All the music was recorded from his home. This movie had a shoestring budget. In fact the film was so cheap, Cameron scouted out locations with a specific kind of lightbulb (there was no lighting budget). This gave the movie that blue glow look. They built the club from scratch because it would be cheaper than to rent. People thought it was a real place so the extras were free. Cameron came from the Roger Corman school of school of making every penny count. There is only one scene where the cops caught them filming without a permit and it was at the very last shot of the movie. He convinced the cops he was film student on a project. Orion had no faith in the movie, or it's director because his name was attached to Piranha 2 he had almost no involvement in that bomb. Agents were furious with the studio due to no publicity and almost no advertising. It's really hard to believe that the guy known for making blockbusters under budget. Will be known to make one of the most over budgeted spectacles in history.

    I dunno about you guys, but I find the Stop-Motion they used for the Terminator near the end absolutely terrifying. These jerky staccato-movements really work making this thing look unsettling.
    Technically, this was James Camerons' debut as a director (made for a relatively small budget of 6.5 Million $). Two years later, Cameron would make "Aliens" and three Actors (Michael Biehn, Lance Henriksen and Bill Paxton) who appeared in "Terminator" would go on being in that movie.
    Also, the "Terminator"-Franchise mirrors "Alien" in the way that the first movie is more of a Horror-Film while the second is both larger and much more Action-oriented. And in both cases, the first two are absolutely the best ones, in my honest opinion.

    I'm in that minority that loves The Terminator more than any of the sequels. I love it because it was made with blood sweat and pain by a man who had a literal nightmare about being attacked by a machine coming out of fire. James Cameron FOUGHT to get this movie made. He basically starved himself to get the movie made at one point.
    Scenes like Arnold punching the window was done in one take without permits and they had to quickly hurry off and shoot other things, again, without permits. The final shot of the movie was shot without permits and the crew almost got in trouble with the state patrol. The final shot of The Terminator's eye going out was done with pieces of foam core, aluminum foil, a Christmas light, and cigarette smoke. Everything about the films is sheer creativity on a very tight budget. Certain effects like the tanker trunk explosion were almost completely botched. The acting is great. I love Michael Biehn as Kyle Reese.
    They just don't make movies like this anymore. You will almost never find a low budget film with the level of charm, personality, and sheer fucking craftsmanship of a movie like this.
