No bullshit, no big visual effects or 'influencer' jargon, just simple facts presented in a coherent and compact way ! Awesome guys !
Thanks. Straight to the point presentation for mere mortals like me.
I think I've stumbled onto a hidden gem of a channel here
Simple, precise and to the point. Thank you.
Simple, clear explanation. Excellent.
Thank you so much for making this video! Makes so much more sense than all the other explanations I’ve come across!
Glad it was helpful!
Best and most coherent video I have seen on this topic. Thank you
Good grief! This may be the most helpful video on bike issues that I have ever seen!
Very helpful video, thanks for sharing!
This is a helpful video. I have a 21mm internal rim so was able to calculate what size rim I need based on the tire number on the tire. With that sad, my other bike has a rim that 20.5 internal rim width and I put a Maxxis Hookworm 2.5 width 29er tire and had no problems. That in theory is too wide a tire for those rims but at the time I knew nothing about compatibility of rim vs tire widths, so I just did it and never had a problem. I want to replace my tires on a 27.5 with internal rim width of 21 mm. I won't over do it on tire width even tho on my 29er I had no problem. I will try to do things right this time.
Thanks for very informative and helpful video guys!)
Very precise explanation! Salute!
A marketing manager that doesn't spew BS about wide rims but keeps it real??? I like this guy and this brand.
Awesome video. Very well explained
Great video as usual.
Seeing a fair few people making custom electric bikes with massive battery packs and motors capable of speeds in excess of 70mph using bicycle wheels with motorcycle tires. Besides the obvious problems are there any fitting concerns using motorcycle tires on bicycle rims ? Would the beads sit correctly ?
Cheers in advance.
Thnx for this info sir, this is very helpful. from Philippines.
Is it ok if i upsize both front and rear tyres by 1 size? How much will the manoeuvrability be affected on a scale of 1 to 10? Will it reduce my lean angle? Thanks.
I have a stock rim which is possibly the usual width narrow rim for mtb. Then my wheels are forekaster 27 x 2.35. Does the width of the tires of 2.35 be more wider if i replace the rim with a wider one as well?
Straight forward and scientific 👍
Thanks for the video
I need a wider tire for soft sand... is it safe to run 245/50 (9.5 wide) on a 6.5 " wide steel rim? I did for over 5 years previously and want to do it again on a van. The recommendation is 7" wide steel min.
perfect analysis. my narrow tires do feel like folding or sliding when turning. I want it like my bmx
Ive been running 20mm rims with 2.3 inch tyres for the past 6 months, did want to upgrade the rims to something like 26-30mm however all has been going great for me to be honest
29 to 35mm id rims only.
Use wt rates tires. Wt is the wide trail standard set my maxxis.
100% agreed, there is a great article on a popular mtb website on how there is a myth regarding rims needing to be wide... unfortunately mtb companies love making new trends, it's one of the most trendy heavy industries on the planet. They will come up with anything to keep sales going
I use moderate pressure like f-34 r-40psi in city/light terrain. I have 22.5mm rims with 2.0 tyres and its almost great. I feel that 2.15 (55mm) tyres will be perfect, now you can calculate rim to tyre ratio.
hi could i put a 26x1.5 tire to a 26x2.0 rim or is that too narrow that the tire wont lock secure to the rim
Hi, can someone please gimme some advice? I'm running a 29' tyre with 1.89' width. Will a width of 2.1'-2.4' fit those rims? Will it cause any problems if I supposedly fit those slightly wide tyres on my rims forcefully? I found a pretty good deal for new Kenda tyres which are slightly wider(2.3') than my previous tyres(1.89'). Thanks
Hi,
For a hooked rim, The measurement should be taken from the hook of the rim or from the wall?
Also,
I gota pair of 700C wheels, with a internal Rim Beed width of 0.6 inch (15.24mm). Can you Pls suggest what the widest tyre I can fit there...will 700x35c go there?
Thanks
hi what internal rim width will i need for 26 x 2.35 tyres
Can i replace a 1.75 road tire with my mtb that has an original offroad tire of 2.1? (Cause dumb dumb me already ordered the tires)
Hi whats the perfect match tyre size for my 18 X 7 J 38 rim? Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks 🙏
I have a 30mm rims and 2.0 inch tires. Is that ok? Thanks
I have a 26 and a half mm rim and would like to fit a 2.3 rear tire and 2.4 or 2.5 tire in front would that work please let me know
hello may i ask if i can fit the 25c pro one tubeless tire on enve4.5AR(hookless internal width 25mm)?
I need a 3.0 tyre less than 77.8mm. Do I go with a 30mm for a 3.0?
would it be safe to say if the tire I want says you can use a rim sized from 8-12 so would a 10" wide rim put that 12.5" tire in a good spot.
what do you recomend? i use 27.5 2.2 tire, and now i have 18mm rim, is too much 30mm rim inner width? in my country can't find 25mm rim
Sir can i use 700x40c tire for my 29er with 30mm rim? thanks
My old tires read 26x1.50 can 26x2.125 be comparable?
Whats a good tire set size for a set of 15x9 rims
ok so i used the formula and it says by using the .4 to .8 numbers that my 2.6" will fit from 26mm which i know some guys that use close to that size for 2.6" up to 52mm which im thinkin is waaaay to big so not sure the .4 and .8 numbers are that good to use maybe .6 and even that being 39mm is kinda bit much.. but def think .4 to .6 are better to use as a guide. please dont take this the wrong way im just trying to figure out easy way of finding out tire compatibility with rim size. So maybe this will help others as well as me... :)
Thanx again for taking time to do your videos..!!
Just bought a 35w rim, and have a 2.4 tire on the rear.. I think it’s probably fine but still don’t know.. I found online that it can handle 2.3/3.0 or on some websites 2.5/2.8 can’t tell for sure.. any helpful tip? Thanks
Is that 35mm inner width or external?
im also running a 35mm inner width with 2.4 WT DHR, freakin Gnarly dude. can go rocket speed on corners!! Oh well i guess its all about practice also. LOL
I have 3.35 width 650b 27.5 tires Shimano alloy wheel set .What could I go up to and down to ? If you can please explain as I am a knooby !
A 100/70 17 tire to a 3.00x17 rim, are they possible?
The ISO on my Onza Svelt 27.5 x 2.25 is 57-584, when i multiply 57 to 0.4 and 0.8 the results are 22.8 and 45.6, does that mean my tyres will go well with rims that have an inner width or 22.8mm up to 45.6mm? Please correct me if i'm wrong. Thank you.
Hey there, Jerohm - your math is correct! To be absolutely certain, your rim's manufacturer can confirm what tire widths are compatible with your specific rim.
Hi im currently running maxxis craskmark 2 27 x 2.25 and my rims have 23mm internal wide.... my question is why is it too bulb shape or is it the knobs that makes it too bulb
use a 30mm
Is there any difference to this when accounting for plus and fat tires?
Whats best tire size in rim 1.6?? Thanks
Hi Steve! Thanks for sharing this video. I currently have 29er rims with 39.7 inner width. It is safe to use 2.5 tyre with this rims?
Rim is too wide. Thats a fat tire rim 2.6 to 2.8 tire. I would not go past 35 mm beads for a mtb. Stick with 2.35 to 2.5 tires. Beyond that is un needed weight.
@@Hawlkeye-e9p Lot of thanks for the info.
You’ll be ok riding a 39.7 inner rim with 2.5 tyre. Currently running 2.6 on a 39.8 inner wheel (RF i40 arc) Tyre looks well rounded and rides very well
nice! support done ser :)
GREAT VIDEO, and much needed. On my 2019 MAZDA CX 5 I have 225/55/19 OEM all season tires. When they wear out I will replace them with 245/50/19 all season tires. (they are the OEM circumference) this "upgrade" for better handling and braking is the widest recommended tire for this wheel size given my rim width.
Just letting you know this video is for bikes, not cars.
Hi! I have a 29er rim with a 27.4 internal rim width, can i use a 700x42c tires in it or is it too wide?
It's too wide
Can I put 50-406 tire to 16-406 rim?
Wait. Is this for bike tires and rims or car tires and rims?
Hi! I'm planning to install a 27.5x2.0 tire on my 40mm rims. Its that ok?
Lol whyyyy
will a 2.4" be to small for a 35mm inner width rim?? i have feeling its a yes but just wanna make sure i went and got 35mm carbons and never thought about using smaller then 2.6" which im thinkin is prolly the SMALLEST i for a 35mm internal but like i said i wanna make sure cause if i can get away with a 2.4 then im def gonna try it.. Thanx in advance for any answers!!!!
He answered this in one of the question and yeah, you'll be fine with 2.4. 35mm inner width sweet spot is between 2.4 to 2.6 according to his reply.
@@mjojrjr6231 sorry didnt catch him on that... Thanx alot man.. def gonna try em
@@weathdone I'm building a set up with the same inner width as yours and fitted 2.5 dhf at the front, back will be 2.4 dhr and they're both wide trail.

Can I put a size 35x12.50xr17 on a 39x13.50xr17 ??? Will the 12.50 and 13.50 be a issue anyone ?
i have 35mm rims and have 2.8 inch tyres will that rim be too big for a 2.6?
no u can trim down tire size to myb 2.3 but it will feel unsafe soo 2.4 is goo(i also have that combo 35mm rimms and 2.4 continental trail king)
Rim size 90-15. Wana use 150mm tyre.can i?
Can I put a 2.4 on a 2.2 rim?
Can I upgrade from a 26 x 1.7 to a 26 x 2.1 Tire?
I currently have a 21mm Rim running on 29 x 2.2 tire. Can I go to a 29 x 2.4 tire?
Ideally you would want something a little wider, like a 24mm rim width. But, you should be alright with 21mm. You may see a little extra rounding of the treadcap and a slightly softer feel to the sidewalls.
@@teravail4366 on a 19mm can I run 2.35? Rim recommends until 2.45
so can i put a 2.5assegai on my inner width 26 mm rim?
Yep!
I’m running a 27.5 2.25 on 32mm rims. Am I in danger?
u say multiply the iso number..!! Which one? only cause u said the iso number was on tire and then pointed out the 2 numbers so which one do i use to multiply by the .4 and .8 numbers,
the first or the second number?
He said the ISO is the first of the 2. The second he said was bead diameter
Quick question, I have a tire with iso 53-559 by your logic I can have a rim width of between 21(.2)mm and 42(.4)mm ( ie 53 x 0.4 and 53x0.8)
Hi there, thank you for your sizing inquiry. Please go ahead and reach out to info@45NRTH.com with any questions.
Im using a 20mm inner width + 700x 38C tire. 6mos of riding almost daily riding. 😄👍
New to MTB here. I’ve been told to run low tire pressure. Once you have weight on the tire, wouldn’t that change the profile of the tire 🤔
How about 28mm internal width for Maxxis 27.5x2.5WT
How can I fix tyres of 26×4 inches to replace the tyres of 26×2.125 in an mtb
Probably not !
Let alone the clearance issues with the frame
Hey there I appreciate your time and effort.. This video is really helpful
Q- CURRENTLY I'M USING (54-559) 26*1.95 MTB CAN I REPLACE IT WITH (60-559 )26*2.4??
Thank you
Hello. How and what do you measure on your rim to determine the tire size
Hi Kapena,
You should measure between the beads of the rim (see 2:28 in the video). You can use a caliper, clear ruler, or other measuring device.
How about a 23mm internal with rim on a 2.25 tire?
Maybe.... but thats the max tire you can use. All the new stuff is 25 to 35 mm rim with and 2.35 to 2.5 tires.
For 32 mm width rim , what is the max witdth tyre I can use . Tq
Inner width of 32, look at the ETRTO number and multiple by .4 and by .8 to get the range.
Parktool say the first iso number is width of tyre when inflated.
My old k2 mtb had 19 mm, no wonder the 2.2 tires were sooo hard to get off...now those rims have 1.2 tires and my new 30 mm rims have 2.5 tires...but i swear the new aluminum rims are twice the weight...
Wheel rims should have a minimum & maximum recommend tire size. Just like pressure
hello everyone, I have 21mm internal 29'' . Can I put 3.0" tire or How much I can put the biggest in a 21mm rim. thank you.
I would say no, unless you want to have a light bulb effect. 3.0 tyre should be fitted to 35m upto 40mm inner width rim. Hope that helps.
@@mjojrjr6231 with a 19mm rim can I fit 2.35? Rim says max 2.45 tire.
@@magnumllama400 yeah, I fitted 2.4 in my old 21mm inner width so I don't see any reason why 2.35mm won't fit.
@@mjojrjr6231 nice thanks
@@mjojrjr6231 do you use wider on the front / rear or both the same?
I have a 26", 19mm rim...can i fit a 2.35 tire on?
No. Tries that. Super dangerous. Tire will flop on corners and landings = fall on face. 29 to 35 mm id bead rims only.
Welcome to the future.
Well i fitted 2.35 on front and there is not a single problem, I rode them for 3 weeks, that was my concern too but i gotta go wayy bigger to fall on my face like u said.
And im more than happy with my 26, u stay on them 29ers
When you realize he was talking about bikes the entire time
Ikr, due to liability no one will dare speak about changing the size of tires on motorcycles. All it takes is one idiot (of the millions out there) to lay it down, get themselves hurt or killed and the insurance company says "we won't pay out because he was using the wrong size tire" then they start looking for someone to get money from. Lawsuit blah blah .
@@ahole5407 Actually funny enough, I was looking for videos on car tires 😂
29 to 35 bead width for mtb.
2.3 to 2.5 in tires.
Stick with maxxis wt tire standard and use 35 mm bead rims and your good.
What best rim size fit for maxxis ikon 2.2?
I would say 25mm inner width should be spot on.
@@Convultus totally agree 👍, my stock wheelset got 21mm inner width and came with 2.4 front and 2.3 rear. Upgraded my wheelset now to 35mm inner width with 2.6 tires both f & b.
So now i have 29 2.25 on my 25 mm rim, Can i put a 29 2.50 on that ?
No. 2.35 to 2.5 tires work best with 29mm to 35mm rims. You will crash hard on your question. Trust me. Been there.
@@Hawlkeye-e9p it works fine :) i am looking for a 30 mm rim
@@Hawlkeye-e9p and 2.2 works with 25mmn
Can I mount a 2.4" on a 22 mm rim?
The minimum for a 2.4 tire is a 23mm rim
just came across this and I'm surprised on the range! a 44.8mm rim for a 2.2 (maxxis ardent race 27.5x 2.2 has iso of 56 so 44.8) I thought I was pushing it putting it on a 30mm rim
Ive been debating 2" or 2.2" for a gravel tire on a 30mm id rim, are you happy with it still? 40-80% is a much bigger range than i thought was ok.
When weight is applied to the tire they are all "flat" on top.
27x2.8 on 30mm internal width?
Good question. What's the bead width? You're likely very near the narrow end of the spectrum.
.4 and .8, that's quite a range.
Will a 25 mm rim fit a 2.4 tyre?
Yes
Precise 3:00 video without useless blah blah, congrats
Informative... you'll get your thumbs up. But i don't like the inconsistent effort of editing.
Who else watching the video wishes he would explain what I'm even looking at. That looks like an alien's head.
So Im good at 2.2 tires on 26mm internal width rims. 😁
You can try Fitting 2.4 in it, biffy tyres are the new normal and it looks awesome, rides great in the trail too.
40-80%, wow, that's a huge disparity! And when the wheel is only 0.4 of the tyre.... damn, that's narrow!
Hello Sir, regarding this size of tire, if I have rim with 36mm IW what size of tire can match with that?
Thank you, I Hope you'll notice me. God bless po :)
Hey there! A safe range would be 2.2" - 3.0" tires. 2.4" to 2.6" would be ideal.
@@45nrth97 hello sir, I have 21mm internal 29'' . Can I put 3.0" tire or How much I can put the biggest in a 21mm. thank you.

Question, will my tire increase in width lenght if i increase my rim size? Im planning to replace my 19mm inner rim to a more wider rims. Increasing it to 26mm to accomodate my 2.3 tires. Today, im running a 2.3 at the back and 2.4 at front with an 19mm rims. I know it is not recommendend but, as long as i kept my air inflated, il be ok.
Yep, it's certainly possible to see an increase in width by a couple of millimeters.
ugh...I have "auto steer".
can anyone convert to english?
Volume up!
I think 80% would be too wide
Hi im currently running maxxis craskmark 2 27 x 2.25 and my rims have 23mm internal wide.... my question is why is it too bulb shape or is it the knobs that makes it too bulb
It's about the feels of the tire when you're riding
Than the look of it
