- A few video clips of the new CSX ST70AHs (SD70ACe-T4s) idling at the Agrock facility in Bowling Green, FL. Their prime mover is interesting because it sounds much different than the usual EMD SD70ACe prime mover and more like a GEVO. Thanks for watching, and if you like what you saw please be sure to like, comment, and subscribe!

Sounds very reminiscent of a GE because of the four stroke engine, which I don’t mind. For those who worry about the sounds of EMD “dying out” you shouldn’t. There’s plenty of EMD rebuilds on the rails that will be sticking around for years to come.
Sound of GE... R.I.P. legendary two strokes EMD. :'/
m94 neves dont worry old 2 stroke EMDs will be heard for many more years to come. The railroad I work for we have 2 stoke 16-567 non turbos now that’s a unique sound
Coach Z yes they have a roots blower, not technically supercharged as it doesn’t add any boost it just keeps the flow of air going though the engine as a two stroke EMD creates no negative air flow to draw air into the cylinders
I somewhat agree. However, with EMDs history with 2 strokes, I can assume that they'll get these 4 stroke diesels to pur just like the 710
These should still be good and reliable. Nevertheless there are tons of rebuilds for EMDs legendary engines, so they thankfully aren't going anywhere anytime soon.
I hope not old school emd is boss !!
Those sound eerily like the old 265H engines. I've heard one of these behind the Big Boy and it was unbelievably quiet.
To be fair, the EMD 1010J is basically a newer version of the 265H
correct, it’s basically a reincarnated 265H 12 cylinder modified to meet T4 emissions standards
@@710studios8 hmmm 265 was twin turbo v16, right?
@@cat_with_sunglass The 265 came in a v16 and v12, the v12 being used mostly in China. The GEVO-16 found good use there, too.
@@pootispiker2866 The JT56ACe for China used the V16 model. The V12 version of the 265H was only used in the SD89MAC prototype, and then refined into the 1010J for the SD70ACe-T4.
Idles faster than GEs. Wish EMD was able to meet tier 4 standards with their 2 cycle engine instead. Nice to see CSX purchase something from EMD, as its been a while.
They could get the 710 to meet the t4 standards if DEF is used, but the railroads said they did not want to use DEF.
@@bluegrassman3040 Why did they not want to use it? I assume DEF means Diesel Exhaust Fluid.
@@mbrproductions160 the DEF systems are problematic. Plus it’s an added expense. From what I understand the tugboat companies can still get a new EMD 710, because they use the DEF on the new stuff.
@@bluegrassman3040 Understood, thanks for the answer!
They didn’t purchase these. On a four year lease, and CSX has already sent them back to EMD.
Atleast it’s not so loud like the regular ACE, and can meet tier 4 emissions. I don’t understand what went wrong through. If I did I’d perhaps better understand why Amtrak hasn’t even asked EMD to make a tier 4 passenger locomotive to replace the Genesis locomotives, given the terrible reliability of the Chargers.
Rad shutters opened around the 4:30 min mark! Awesome!
I have to be honest, this sounds better than those Tier 4 GEs, the new GEVOs are damn near silent compared to the older ET44s and such. Its like an old tractor, this thing, could listen for hours
Have you heard one running? These ST70AH's are completely silent when running.
That air compressor sounds like cicada in summer lol.
It's really unfortunate that CSX returned these to Progress Rail. This is beautiful, far better than any GE idle.
They were under a 4 year lease
Why did they not renew the lease or buy a fresh batch?
@@blowemall who knows maybe they didn’t like them to what I’ve heard the SD70ACE TIER 4’s are terrible they sit in the shops for weeks
It’s nice to hear the sound of the 1010 while only idling. There is a lot of horsepower in only 12 cylinders. The 4 cycle sound is easy to get use to in the EMD. Hope to see the units in actual train service soon.
Wishful thinking. CSX has already sent these back to EMD, leaving UP the sole owner. And they’ve been less than pleased with theirs with a multitude of problems.
@@anb7408Caterpillar has a lot to learn about locomotive engine development!…sell EMD back to GMC
@5:46 ... never seen that before .... those look like "active" vents .....
The Radiator Vents are also like that on EMD Switcher Locomotives, The MP15DC and SW1500
I noticed that too, but apparently, that’s how all EMD Radiators function.
Sounding like a GE is never a good thing for an EMD.
Yeah, it is. It's four cycle now.
Google EMD 1010J Engine.
I like the sound of this new four-stroke 1010 prime mover from EMD. Very nice capture and video quality.
Me too! Thanks!
Anytime! I subbed!
In don’t like it sound too much like a GE
Let’s just say these are more relaxing than the 710G3B V20’s that the sd80macs had
I know technology must move on and EPA is forcing Tier 4 emissions, but EMD's 2-stroke sound is a trademark.
Well, Caterpillar owns EMD which I think is good because CAT engines are another breed of tough and reliable engines.
Not really
The engine in this locomotive is not Cat based though. It’s basically the same engine in the 90 Mac.
CAT got out of the over the road market last I heard...I'd guess The EPA...totally unrealistic gubmint peckerheads
They are still producing SD70ACes with the 710 under EPA Tier-IV credit program. Unfortunately, EMD hasn't really been selling much of either version as of late.
Not a good time to sell more locomotives when all the railroads seem to just be cutting down more and more...
@@IsaiahsTrains you're spot on! Here's to hoping you catch more idling tier 4 aces! I love using videos like this for ambient noise to fall asleep to.
@@scenicdepictionsofchicagolife Glad you like it!!
cool seeing the fan vent open and close
That air compressor sounds like an engine with no lubricating oil in it
I like those sd70ace tier 4 I have seen them in trukee California with a friend of mine not too long ago.
Maybe its an emdevo and its weird to hear similar sounds of an gevo in an GM or EMD
Haha for sure, it is very strange...
I can only assume it sounds similar to a GEVO due to the fact that instead of a 2 stroke diesel, it's now a 4 stroke. More efficient, but with several turbochargers, a Caterpillar diesel, and a few other differences, it still has it's own unique sound. Though it's kinda unfair that they're quiet
@@CSX4772 Wikipedia says it's an EMD 12-1010J engine. But EMD is part of Caterpillar now. Still prefer the 2-stroke sound though.
No more 2 stroke diesels. There all 4 stroke now. to comply with the new emissions. It does sound tougher than a GEVO. I Love SD70's There not EMD anymore either There owned by Progress Rail which is owned by Caterpillar.
Love the air compressor but I'm pretty shure people are not going to like thim idling out side there house at night. I work for HALLCON and hoping to see one soon.
RICKY GARCIA I live 120 ft from the CSX Henderson Sub and often they stop beside the house and idle. It’s not too bad. The compressor is the loudest part, but I like the GE compresor sound better.
Assuming that's the air compressor that came on at 1:00, I would figure EMD will need to work on a quieter model...
carnadero you would think they could come up with a screw type compressor. I’m assuming this one is still a piston type.
Regardless what people are saying, this 4-stroke from EMD is still music to my ears.
I hear hints of EMD and GE in this prime mover. But yes, it does sound more like a GE than an EMD compared to the previous generation EMD units. That's due in part to the fact that it's a four stroke engine instead of a two stroke. Different sound. That being said, I do like these and I wish CSX would buy more. 10 just isn't enough and it makes it hard to catch them. I've only ever caught one leading once. I'd also like if NS would give them another shot and BNSF as well. Thanks for the sound demo!
I'm glad you liked it! They are hard to catch... I've only ever seen two leading.
@@IsaiahsTrains I've only seen one on CSX lead and I just saw a UP one lead on a UP trackage rights train on the BNSF Transcon in Missouri recently. They are rare
Cool shot of a really cool engine!
Thank you!
Wow first time seeing this video and that sounds just like a GE.
Something happened in the radiator at 5:23. Does anyone know what It is?
I noticed that as well. I'm not sure, but it looks like either the vent closes or switches directions every few minutes. Someone else might know better than me though.
It may have something to do with active Cooling. Whatever it is, that's a cool feature.
@@955redavenger it is something similar to active cooling. Like the shutters on the front of some cars. When it gets down to a certain temperature, the vents close. Above and they open, and cool the coolant. Same idea here
At 5:46 the vents open open
The shutters open at 5:02 and close at 5:23
Noooo! the got rid of the 710’s and replaced it with the 1010j no more ying ying ying
Too bad CSX returned these!
Not bad wish EMD was still owned by GM!…sounds good tho!
you know what I think I went by you without knowing because I remember seeing these exact same engines going by this place around the same time as you
That would've been funny, I was there a couple times that week haha.
Honestly, these should be called ST90AHs, these are nothing like the SD70s. Hell, they don't even run on a 2 stroke engine
Wolf Nigga a Well, the 1010J IS a version of the 265H. So you’re not wrong.
Wolf Nigga Well, these new EMD's are built on a 70+ foot similar frame to the original SD70 standard cab. The SD90MAC was built on a massive 80 foot frame, if memory serves me correct.
Hakeem Sd70M close enough. I agree with him.
Wolf Nigga I agree with you and why tf are you EVERYWHERE?!
beautifull sound...nice shot
Thank you!
1:01 is that the compressor?!?! That thing’s loud!!
sounds like a GE 7FDL
Revisiting this video after quite some time:
To those of you claiming these "sound like GEs" I ask in what way? Because they are both four stroke diesels? Are you also gonna tell me a Ford Coyote sounds the same as a Chevy LS? Cause nah. Stop being so reductive. LOL. Yes we are all sad that the 710 is (sort of) dead. Doesn't mean the 1010 isn't a prime mover to be excited about!
What's the traction effort on these? I'm guessing around 191,000 to 200,000 pounds?
I like the sound of the SD70ace tier 4 better than the sound or the GE locos.
Its coming up to 10 years since EMD introduce these EMD 1010J engines, how many are there is on service ?
I think a handful on UP and all the rest are down in Mexico now.
Beautiful shot, and quality sound Isaiah! What’s the sound at the 1:00 mark? And I hear a hint of GE.
Air compresser

Thank you! Yeah they sound much more like GEVOs than the regular EMDs lol.
Compressor. No gevo whoop, which is funny.
@@howlingwolven it's not belt driven. Which gives the characteristic of the "Whoop!" This seems to be shaft driven.
Very nice !!!
Thank you!
Nice....
Thank you!
@@IsaiahsTrains no problem dude.
I wish I could see the trains you get.
Ontario doesn't got that stuff tho.
@@IsaiahsTrains just subbed!
;D
The air compressor sounds like a turbofan starter pump that lost its sound seal and all you hear is bare metal.
EMD-SD45 T2=EMD GT26 CW KOREA
Very Nice !!!
Thanks!
I’ll take an older “purring” 645 engine any day. And CSX has already sent these packing back to EMD.
Why does it sound like a GE?
Four-stroke diesels usually have a heavier, more mechanical sound compared to the screaming rocketship liftoff sound of EMD two-stroke diesels.
Hakeem Sd70M ok
That's ST70AH
Billy Hunter yes
I know, it's in the description. But the common name is SD70ACe-T4 that most people know.
ST70AH is what CSX calls its tier 4 SD70s. (my bad, SD70AH is SD70ACe)
ST70AH is just a CSX designation for these locos, meaning of course that means it's a standard SD70 Tier 4 with AC traction motors and High Tractive Effort tech. The official name from EMD is SD70ACe-T4.
Ain't this on rail unlimited on roblox right? Its call the eco freight
Norfolk Southern fan 8182 AWVR fan yea I got it
Norfolk Southern Fan 9806 /Truck Spotting Fan yes it is. I spent robux on that thing and I haven’t driven it since the first week!
The reason why those prime movers don't sound like the older EMD 2 stroke ones is because they are Caterpillar 4 stroke tier 4 emissions compliant ones. Guy Franks
They are not caterpillar based engine. It's EMD owns elf design for tier 4 Emission Standards
@@Wolfennsteinn Caterpillar owns EMD and Progress Rail, which EMD was a subsidiary to them.
The 1010J was manufactured and improvised by Caterpillar because it's completely based on EMD's 265H which was a complete failure on many levels.
The 1010J is the successor to what the 265H failed to be in the first place, all because of Caterpillar.
SD70ACe at least have the 16 cylinder 2 stroke Diesel. This version has the smaller 4 stroke engine. Honestly shouldn't even be in any SD models

What in the cancer is that air compressor? Bleck! What was wrong with the normal engine driven? Or even something like what GE uses. That’s just awful!
