For damn sure railroad trains don't leave the reservation and go hunting automobiles and trucks. I personally ran trains in my career as a locomotive engineer and have to see the idiots every time I go to sleep that died in front of the train I was running. From what one guy that stepped in front of a commuter train at 70 mph and less than 100 feet away to four teenagers playing chicken with a 56 Chevy sedan at a crossing, driver stalled it as the exhaust disappeared and they had plenty of time to get out and didn't try, car went 173 feet before it touched the ground three died instantly and the last died 11 days later. And a local cop pointed me out to three of the parents at the accident scene and to this day they still say I killed their sons. Those were my first and last deaths with me as the engineer and I still say hi to them every night. My wife tells me I yell at them in my sleep. Took me seven years after I married her to tell her about it and the first happened in 1974 and the last in 1979, guess I got lucky since then until I retired. Sorry guys I guess I talk too much.
I love these locomotive but i miss the old ones, but they look so big is that because of newer parts added to the train to have tier 4 emission standard? Well I also love it, and it just look so big and what a beauty.
And...It never happened... Union Pacific owns 90 SD70ACE-T4's and CSX only has 10 of them. Norfolk Southern canceled their orders, but at that they sell and get rid of many other locomotives than you think. As seen here,BNSF was attempting to get some on their roster but then changed the decision for some reason. Also, the SD70ACE-T4's didn't get alot of sales due to numerous problems at first, mainly dealing with computer and electronic systems, and even the fuel injection system aside from high price. That's why Union Pacific had them in storage for awhile after immediately putting them out of service,to get updates and repairs going.

Put a K5 on those units please! This is America, we are big and loud. K5’s sound so much better. The shape of the new locomotives are cool, but that horn, not even a horn. Fill up those air compressors and put those horns to good use. If I can’t hear the Doppler effect, than its not good enough of a horn. Gotta be loud and let people know your coming. Hard to hear the engine sound with these horns blaring all the way. But apparently they much sound like the GEVO T4's, muffled and nearly like an electric locomotive.
It is a common practice among locomotive builders to paint the new demonstrator locomotive's in a specific railroads paint scheme to give a railroad one less item to not buy the new model locomotive's. All the have to do and EMD would be happy to do so is paint over EMD and paint BNSF on the side and front and rear of every new locomotive BNSF ordered. The grade crossings horns, is this a federal requirement for grade crossings now? If it is I would have to believe non of the lawmakers live within hearing distance of a railroad. I do believe the new electronic grade crossings horns will be a new target of everyone who lives within earshot. Anybody agree?
If you think about it, GE and EMD meet T4 standards by using a a larger version of your household vacuum cleaner. The exhaust goes into a few chambers and is spun around throwing the particles to the side as the cleaner gas goes out. That's the easiest way I can explain it. Sadly, goodbye to the chugging GE.
Ryan Hatterer that is definitely not how it works. a metered portion of the exhaust gasses are sent through an "EGR Cooler", which is basically a radiator, and mixed with the combustion air intake. The amount of cooled exhaust entering into the cylinders is carefully controlled to create a slower, more controlled burn to prevent the extremely high temperature spikes that can cause NOx formation. there is no after treatment or particulate filtering in the GE tier 4's.
Christian Javier Are you sure on that? that doesn't explain why you can hear a vacuum like sound, telling me that it's a form of after treatment. really wish there was some kind of video to show
I took EMD 20 odd years and an ownership change but it seems they finally perfected the 1010 (nee 265H) prime mover. Good for them. Looks odd having the units fully painted in the client scheme but with ElectroMotive lettering but they, they were going to paint them one way or the other anyway, right? Might as well make them fit in to the client's roster, it might drum up some more sales.
EMD didn't perfect the 1010J...It was Caterpillar.Caterpillar owns Progress Rail and Electro Motive Division.General Motors dumped the division in 2005,and then in 2010 was when Caterpillar did the acquisition. Before hand, there was a different company in that gap. That's an automated crossing horn, it plays the sequence from the crossing so the train doesn't have to, they have it at crossings where trains that travel at high speeds roll through. Obviously trains go through at high speeds through that first spot. Other places like Dekalb Illinois and Grand Island Nebraska have them too.
what is so bad about the wayside horn?.. The idea of it is to hopefully remove consistent repair or replacement of the unit cut back on manufacturing coasts and the ability to not use extra air out of the air system, any amount of air saved is air well used. Plus that thing can be heard from miles away, as long as it's heard loud and proud it's just as effective as a normal diaphragm air based horn. Just like the ebell it might sound like ass but Rail roads and the average joe doesn't care.. it serves it's job wile offering better efficiency, quality and coast cutting.
Thanks for the comment, and watching as well. They are meant to benefit the neighbors around there. Using a train horn is part of normal operations, so I don't think it has much to do with that. The horn can only be heard in the direct area that it is sounding for.
What are you even talking about? The purpose of wayside horns is not to cut back on repair or replacement of Locomotive airhorns. Nor is it to save air on a locomotive. Locomotive horns use a minuscule amount of air. The wayside horns are to appease people who live near a railroad crossings who don’t want to hear train horns.
Thanks for the comment! No, these units were never owned by BNSF. EMD painted them in BNSF colors, and hoped that BNSF would purchase them. There are other EMD demo units rolling around in UP colors as well, but were, and are EMD owned.

The new SD70ACE-T4 locmotives are pretty nice. Unfortunately, government regulations forced GE and EMD to create their respective locomotives out of necessity, which means stuffing an exhaust system full of filters may not be the best long term reliability solution for supposed cleaner air. On another note, it's a shame how a nation that's entire westward expansion was built by railroads suddenly hates them so much that they try to regulate railroads on their own property, with idiotic tricks like quiet zones and these absolutely awful wayside horns. He is right about coal I live near the Hannibal sub there has been a big drop in coal trains over the year. I didnt know BNSF had the T4s tell I seen this I knew UP had them they to run junk units here NS has dropped trains coming here they use to be 4 each way now luck to see 1 CSX same way they all park in the yards here over night then go out the next day back north.
It just hit me what this sounds like. It sounds like the new weather alert sirens. We hav 3 of them in town when they go off this is what it sounds like they to are electronic sound
@@paulspomer16 Thanks for the comment; the surrounding area with that wayside horn is filled with homes. It has gotten very built up in the last few years.
Weird horn. The sound is not coming from the locomotive because your would hear a pitch change do to the Doppler affect as the train passes. Must be a horn sound from the crossing.
All jokes aside, there’s a wayside horn near me and I am legitimately considering sneaking up to it late at night and disabling/destroying it, or whatever I can do to it. Seriously.
Just so long as you realize that would be a federal crime and if anyone got killed at the crossing after you disabled the horn you would be looking at a Manslaughter charge.
I agree with you on this; but those are roadside horns put up to appease the people around there who didn't want to have the trains blow the horn. Thanks for watching!

@@SD457500 Thanks for the clarification. I was a subscriber to Trains magazine for years but haven't gotten it for some time now. I had missed out on the wayside horns, but then I live in a smaller town that's not likely to ever have them.
Not happy with these new locos. They seem to have lost that thumping earth shaking sound. It's a shame, bring back the 80's with far too much noise and belching smoke, at least it was exciting. These new machines are boring. A bit like the A380 vs Concorde, I'll take the Concorde every time with it's completely "I don't give a fuck what anyone thinks I'm a big loud plane" attitude.

Were I live in Ia on the transcon all I have seen here for the last year is old old units I hear everyday they are calling Ft Worth cause of some kind of trouble with the units one worker I talked to down by the depot he said it is all junk units they have been running cause of the loss of the coal contracts & oil trains. He is right about coal I live near the Hannibal sub there has been a big drop in coal trains over the year. I didnt know BNSF had the T4s tell I seen this I knew UP had them they to run junk units here NS has dropped trains coming here they use to be 4 each way now luck to see 1 CSX same way they all park in the yards here over night then go out the next day back north.
it sounds like an electric horn tuned to imitate classic american air horn
No kidding! Its a wayside horn....I'm not a fan of them.
It just hit me what this sounds like. It sounds like the new weather alert sirens. We hav 3 of them in town when they go off this is what it sounds like they to are electronic sound
Nice catch
Thanks for the comment; they were cool to see while they ran around here.
Why is there a wayside horn?
Thanks for the comment; the wayside horn is there because the residents complained about normal train horns.
@@SD457500 Residents? What residents? Those wayside horns were in the middle of nowhere
@@paulspomer16 Thanks for the comment; the surrounding area with that wayside horn is filled with homes. It has gotten very built up in the last few years.
Because stupid people complain about train horns let do there job
That first horn on the first train sounds weird
Thank you for the comment; they are wayside horns.
Whos ideas was that to put wayside horns
Thanks for the comment! The people who live by there; they didn't like the train horns, so these went up.
SD457500 thoes idiots should understand saftey matters more
SD457500 Do you know what's the type of that horn?? It sounds weird.
Arif Sukirno Thanks for the comment; those are wayside horns, not on the power.
SD457500 Haha... I don't ever hear that horn before, cause I usually hear the Nathan horns actually. So if I hear this, it is very strange for me.
Wow that horn is a joke!
Weird horn. The sound is not coming from the locomotive because your would hear a pitch change do to the Doppler affect as the train passes. Must be a horn sound from the crossing.
It's the wayside horn you are hearing,...not the one on the locomotive!
They might be the new BNSF locomotives
BNSF cancelled their order for them.
@@FFred-us9tw oh
AND THAT CROSSING HAS A HORN
That sounds like a Train simulator Horn!
Love the video cept that horn not your fault.
Thanks for the comment! Those wayside horns are horrible...
Quiet Zone?
awesome train video
Wat kind of horn is that
All jokes aside, there’s a wayside horn near me and I am legitimately considering sneaking up to it late at night and disabling/destroying it, or whatever I can do to it. Seriously.
Just so long as you realize that would be a federal crime and if anyone got killed at the crossing after you disabled the horn you would be looking at a Manslaughter charge.
@@FFred-us9tw Ah, you again. Mr. UA-cam Railroad policeman.
THE HORN IS NOT OK! i dont want to be the one operating a train with that horn
Thanks for the comment! The horn is actually a wayside horn, and yes, they sound horrible.
What happened to the classic horn?! Those wayside horns suck
Those Horns Are Strange lol!
I agree, but the locomotives are great
Thanks for the comment! They sure do look sharp.
Man that Horn,Ugh! Sounds like an Electronic recording.
That’s because it is.
Please someone swat this horns factory and see if they're teaming with aliens
I agree with you on this; but those are roadside horns put up to appease the people around there who didn't want to have the trains blow the horn. Thanks for watching!
It did sound like a roadside horn a little bit.
Was that it's horn
No, it's just that the train was going through a quiet zone with an automated horn
TheNazar123 Quiet zones are for wussies lol
+BBT609 #iluminaticonfermed
The horns on drugs again.... (I know it was a generic horn made by the crossing)
That horn has to be a deal breaker.....how annoying
Thanks for the comment. They are actually the wayside horns in Andover, and are horrendous.
Those Are BNSF
Thanks for the comment. They aren't BNSF, rather they are EMD demo units and have the reporting marks 'EMDX'.
Oh my goodness that horn sounds so WRONG
they're not called P4s ffs
Then what are they called? This came right from EMD, and my contacts there.

Looks good, sounds good, but that horn has to go. Happy Railroading everybody!!!!!!!
Nice Video I just Subscribe!!
Carmichael Train Production Channel 327 Thank you!
I haven't herd of a "wayside horn" until just now. I thought the locomotives just had the weirdest horns that I've never heard before. I looked up "wayside horns" and I already hate them. I agree with everyone thinking that it should be killed and what not. IT'S A WASTE OF MONEY!!!!!
Nice video
bnsf colors
Couple of hundred million to develop a new engine... 5 cents on a horn.
As soon as I heard the wayside horns I clicked off this video.
cool
EMD's without the 2 Cycle !???!!...... Cat Sucks !! Screw the tree hugging EPA !!
2Stroke Diesel Power damn right
I agree, but some of my family members used to work for the EPA, so it hurts a bit.
Those damned wayside horns can go to hell
Im not a fan of those horns.
Thanks for the comment! Those are wayside horns, and they aren't cool.
@@SD457500 Thanks for the clarification. I was a subscriber to Trains magazine for years but haven't gotten it for some time now. I had missed out on the wayside horns, but then I live in a smaller town that's not likely to ever have them.
the most disgusting thing in the video is the wayside horn ugh
Thanks for the comment, I would easily agree with you on this.
Wtf did I just see…
You just saw two EMD Tier 4 demos running on the BNSF! Thanks for watching!
What an awful sounding horn
Mason Hoven Those lineside horns are horrible...
SD457500 yes they are
I do not like the new horn at all
Carlissa Kelley The horn is the automatic crossing horn, not what is on the power
I agree they do suck !!!!!
HORN IS HORRIBLE!!!!!!!
mlat411 It's a Wayside Horn.
Bnsf

we.used.to.call.bn.the.big.nothing.when.i.worked.for.cnw.council.bluffs.in.the.70s.and.80s
Damn the horn sounds like it needs a cough drop horrible sounds and clumsy looking locomotive #wantbebuyingthatcrap in Ho Scale yikes
The horn sucked
Thanks for the comment, and watching. I'd agree that wayside horns do suck.
Nice video, horrible horn
That horn is awful
That it is, but those are wayside horns. The actual horn on these units isn't all that bad. Thank you for the comment!
I hate that horn. It doesn't sound a like a train at all... get a real horn.
That horn sucks!!
