Best video I've seen, specially bending over and holding the handle. If you don't know that, the tire slides back unnoticed. You then have a clamp band that is too loose and you can start again and a clamp band wasted. Thanks Andy
....An excellent Vid Andy ... when I did my apprenticeship we were taught to first determine the correct direction of rotation of the driveshaft (ie left side or right side of vehicle) and then fit the strap so that when we folded the tang over it would be less likely to catch, snag or undo itself on when rotating in the forward DoR ... of course this makes no difference if the vehicle reverses !! Cheers ...
I actually bought one of these tools to reband the CV joint boots on my Honda Element. Used it on both inboard and outboard boots but couldn't get enough tension on the outboard CV boot because I was reinstalling the OEM thermoplastic boot and it leaked. The inboard CV boot also OEM but made of neoprene rubber and didn't leak. Switched over to the "ear" type bands because you can get more tension and they are about 25% wider.
Holy shit Andy - very old video mate. Been spannering since I was a teen and to my shame I didn't actually know how to use this tool - I always used the other kind of clips but I have had some bad luck with the batch I was using recently so I'm switching to this type of clip. Thanks for taking the time to show us n00bs.
Hi mate, great vid about the cable tiesbut what are the metal ties called as i've never seen these in the uk, mine keep catching on the wheel hub as the wheel goes round so i need a lower profile tie, could you please tell me how i can get some of these! cheers Andy
Andy a well presented clear video. Valuable. My Thank you's. Please advise me where one sources spare stainless steel clips from here in NZ. I rung around today and was told only boot kits with accompany clips etc are available. I will try again on monday but thought about testing your comments avenue.
Thank you for the video. What is the technical name for the best type of pliers that will enable me to cut off the old metal cv boot clips? I have heard of diagonal side cutters, is there a better type?
Andy I can only get cable ties with no ears do they work the same they seen to lock differently new subscriber like the way you explain things thanks. Jeff uk
Do you think you might be able to tell me why the CV boot keeps popping off my CV joint? I got a brand new one from Auto Zone twice and both times immediately after being installed, the boot popped off. Auto Zone said the rings come pre-tightened.
Hi Angela, well, every CV boot I have installed you fit the retaining clips last & they have to be tightened as per the video. It wouldn't be possible to have pretensioned retaining clips. I suggest you take the car to a proper garage!
I've had some very ugly, clicky CV joints pass a WOF in the past! I get boot kits with clips that don't need a special tool, seem to work well. nice vid
+Badgertronix It's crazy here in NZ. The condition of a CV joint is not considered in a a WoF inspection, despite it been a critical part of the drive train and can affect steering if it collapses....NZ regs???? In the UK, it would be an MOT fail.
I don't think I've ever seen that style of band before! The ones I've used have all been the sort that have notches you use to set the band preload, then use a special pair of crimping pliers to tighten down an extrusion in the band. The same style tends to be OE equipment for boot seals on most stuff I see here in the States. :)
They'd work for sure but remember that drive shaft rotates at Wheel speed. The worm drive clips are unbalanced - weighted where the drive is. At higher speeds this would probably cause a vibration. If it's a slow speed vehicle like an ATV then no problem using them but on a car? I'd suggest not. Cheers Andy
Thank you very much, really helpful. Does the tool have a name or is it just simply known as "cv boot clamp tool" ? Cheers buddy, keep the vids coming 👍
Lmao!!! Wait until grease hits the brakes before its a fail 😭 in England they don't wait till grease hits ya brakes were good like that! "oh shite no brakes!!!....."I knew I should of changed that rubber boot for the price of pocket chaaa! ......💥💨 👼hilarious or not whichever way u look at it.
+Richard D So true & terrible too. Did you know that the condition of the CV joint is also exempt from the NZ warrant...despite the fact that when they fail it can affect steering and cause the driver to loose control of the car! The NZ Government would be better suited running a circus!
i've looked through no less than 7 videos and this is the first one that clearly depicts how to install it properly. THANK YOU
Thank you for showing so clearly and clearly how to put on the clamps and use a special tool.
Been a mechanic for years, never seen anyone use this tool. Thank you 😁

100% the best tutorial for installing the cv band-type (non Oetiker) clamp. Proper job, thanks
You make it look so easy. Many thanks for showing everyone how it should be done. Really helpful.
I always cable tie mine, 350mm x 8mm on the larger part of the CV boot and 5mm on the front of the CV boot, never had one leak grease

Brilliant video thanks I've just bought this kit 😀
Thank you Andy. I was struggling last evening trying to learn this while replacing my car cv joint boots👍⭐️
I've never done this before but that was a good tutorial. Thanks very much
Andy, I have subscribed. I like your presentation style, straight talk. Good video. THANK YOU.
Thanks Jeffry, welcome aboard. Cheers Andy

+Michael Turnwald Hi, you can buy them from Autostop, they have a branch in Glenfield Auckland. Hope that helps. Cheers Andy

+rhkips I know the ones. We have them as OE fitment but can't buy them here in NZ so it's become the 'norm' to use the type I had in the video.
rhkips They are called Ear-Type clamps and need the crimping tool.

Thanks for the video ❤
Here in the U.S.we call them drivve shafts axles
Nobody cares 🎉
The better quality clamps used on Genuine Parts are normally Oetiker Clamps, and require a different tool and a torque wrench...
Cool....thanks!
Thanks, that was very helpful,
How is the boot supposed the seal the joint if there is a big groove in the axle? I mean the boot is round and the sealing surface is not.
What kind of grease do you recommend ? I have a bad clip in the lower part of my cv (leaking grease).
Crisco
Is there anything wrong with using jubilee clips (worm drive clips) like you find on radiator/heater hoses?
They'd work for sure but remember that drive shaft rotates at Wheel speed. The worm drive clips are unbalanced - weighted where the drive is. At higher speeds this would probably cause a vibration. If it's a slow speed vehicle like an ATV then no problem using them but on a car? I'd suggest not.

Wow, good point! Thanks!!
Removing mine right about now! Lol
@@michaelserrano7097 You've had jubilee clips on? Were you experiencing vibrations?
Thank you very much, really helpful.

I thought you would point out the direction of the clamps ie install towards front of engine or to the rear.
Are you related to jack black sir? You look like his elder brother..
Do you have take the whole axel out ?
What is the tool called again any links if pissible
1:09 Well that is the tool for 1 style of CV boot clamps... the other syle (Oetiker style clamps) requires a different "Ear Clamp" tool....
My local repair shop use zip ties to my boot, how long do you think they last? I cannot find the metal ties replacement yet..
+Deo Singgih oh they won't last long unfortunately. Your local car parts store should sell the steel bands :-)
Andy Mechanic thanx Andy, I will replace them asap

Great video. Is that your real mustache? lol
+Larry342516 Yes! Lol
Lol, take care Andy.
This tool is a pain in the ass. If you accidentaly flip or didnt use it in the perfect place you will have issues. What a shit. better plier clamp.
