The level of consultant Watanabe was on this,
"Hey Shinichiro, can we do a cowboy bebop live action?"
    "Yeah sure."
"Thanks bro. We'll say you consulted."
    "Ok, dont fuck it up."
    "Uh... yeah totally."

I saw Watanabe at London MCM !! He was promoting Carole and Tuesday (good anime!) hoping to get a season 3 from Netflix. Saw him give a live talk, which was fantastic to be part of. First question from the audience was "do you have any part in the live action Cowboy Bebop" and the answer was "no". He had no part in the live action.

Yes, Consulted roles are very often a paycheck in return from shilling. Like James Cameron did with Terminator Dark Fate. Despite that movie going against a lot of stuff he has said in the past and some of his bigger criticism to the Alien Franchise he did a 180 when it came to shilling for Dark Fate. They do this instead of getting the fucking people that made it into what was great directly involved with the production. Like we are getting a new 90s X-men show the people who made it so great the show runners are still working but they hired someone within Disney inner circle and just have the old Showrunnners as "consultants".

I don’t think these guys understand the crime noir genre ant that it is supposed to be cringe. These guys were most likely still kids when the the first cowboy bebop came out and missed that it is a parody of American crime noire. This was a pretty good live action representation of the anime.

I really felt Joe when he talked about the "You're gonna carry that weight." Line. They really did not understand how to do those fade to black moments. Those were some of the deepest parts of bebop and they just used them as end titles with no meaning.

I feel like jet in the original show didn’t care much about spike’s past, but in the adaptation he has a whole argument with spike about it. I don’t even remember jet saying anything about spike’s past until the last couple of episodes in the anime, but even then when he asks about it, he’s basically says that he doesn’t really care but thought to ask

    • @Harukoon92
      @Harukoon92 2 роки тому +11

@@Rastafarianinja Jet's issue with Spike's past in the anime is really simple, they've grown fond of one another and are practically the best of friends. He'd rather his friend not go to what is expected to be his final demise, goes as far to tell him if he leaves to never come back, but relents and lets him go after Spike pretty much fills him in with a "fairy tale" version of his past. Even Faye holds Spike at gunpoint for him not to leave and relents discharging her gun inside the Bebop. For the most part, no one cares for one another's past because as she repeats to Spike in his own words "The past doesn't matter". In the anime it's less that they care about his past, and more that they care that the past is dragging him away to will probably be his demise.

Please do not watch it I watched maybe 3 1/2 -4 1/2 episodes going in with the lowest standards and knowing it would be shit but wanting to compare. I instantly regretted watching within first min because it is garbage that shits in 99.99% of the anime source material. John Cho did good with what I got and for all intent I think he tried to make the series work by doing things on his own to help like asking for Yokko Kano to write the music. Jets actor killed it as his character. The rest of what I saw was shit but the liberty they took with characters pissed me off they totally rewrote characters personalities and storylines or introductions which is shit if the creators want to do shit like that just don't adapt and fuck off with that bullshit it's not Cowboy bebop!!!😡😡😡

I got to see 10 episodes of Cowboy Bebop when it released in America. I worked nights in a restaurant and didn't have dvr. I knew something special was going on with what I did see and I purchased the series for myself. I loved it as I was a young father working hard and many of the episodes spoke to me on a very personal level. I re-watched the anime in preparation for this adaptation. By the halfway point of episode 1 of this live action version I was furious. I finished that episode and figured I have seen enough.

Cowboy Bepop was a magnificent Film Noire space detective story, full of dark humor and the gritty reality of life. Bounties were the MacGuffin that moved the plot and stories forward, with the larger, main elements woven into the background. The slow reveal of the bigger picture was captivating, like keeping your eyes on a pack of giant rats for any danger then suddenly realizing that there is a gigantic dragon, in the darkness behind them. I guess all that is left is for Akira to be trashed by these incompetent buffoons.

Why did they make Julia a villain? Just by doing that, it ruins the character of Spike. The loss of the woman he loves, is the reason why he's adrift lost in time. The basis of am I alive, or is this all a dream? It destroys the bittersweet meaning of his existence.
That's just one of the many things wrong with the Netflix series. Vicious is reduced to nothing more than a cartoon Kylo Wren character. His lack of emotion and the mystery, is what made him so dangerous/ scary. Not even going to touch Faye. This show is a bastardization of the original Cowboy Bebop.

    • @hafirenggayuda

I think they want to make something different for this adaptation, a deconstruction for shock factor.
Like "Julia is the real villain, guys. She's not the goddess like Spike's imagine, she's actually worse than Vicious"
Also, twist villain is way overused nowadays. Superhero movies using them too much, they become not interesting

In my honest opinion, the whole Julia thing rubs me the wrong way because she didn't earn ANY of what she got. It felt like the writers just wanted her to be the villain over Vicious because they felt bad that they had put Julia in an abusive relationship and couldn't fathom her growing out of said relationship organically. Instead, they gave her artificial power; She's like a live McGuffin. Vicious is a man-child; completely ruining the character. Faye just needed to stop cursing (I'm ok with her interpretation of the character save for that aspect cause holy shit). I'm not amused that they gave Jet a kid just so that kid could inform their plot points in Episode 9...feels forced and unearned.

That gave me HUGE "Maze Runner" vibes.
I never saw the Anime and was considering the adaptation into live action. Though, no longer, out of respect for the concept Alex pushes here. @@JoshStobart It's not that people are mad at similarities or differences, it's about the vibe of the show, the original show had such a wide range of characters and plot, it never felt like the plot is moving the characters, but that the character is moving the plot forward.
There are a lot of things that could have worked better as a live-action. if they nailed the vibe of the character and then do a completely different story, it still would have irked some people but ultimately appreciated by many. But here they do the same story with the same characters, but there's this weird vibe that it just doesn't fit, and the plot is the only thing moving characters forward.
For Example, Spike in anime is just cool dude that doesn't try to hard and that makes him likeable. But the Netflix version, Spike try way to hard to become a cool character, that it feels that an imposter is trying to act as Spike.
All in all, adaptation will inherently different from the source, there's no helping that, the best thing that can help save the transition, is how much worth is the adaptation, to either add to the story or be an alternative to the source that people can enjoy. In that sense, Netflix's Cowboy Bebop's adaptation while nailing costumes and sets, just feels off when the story and characters starts moving.
Of course, I'm speaking as someone who watched the anime, and no matter how much I want it I can't forget the show to experience watching it again. So someone new trying the Netflix version will feel completely different and I can't really speak for them.

But the anime is actually is rather sad, where often they fail in their objectives because they value their humanity above personal gain. I think Episodes 1 - 8 were...Okay...if you divest yourself from your knowledge of the original. The problem is that for the resolution episodes 9 - 10 did not work on their own. There's literally no reason for any of what happened in 9 to have happened to these characters from what we know from 1 - 7. More egregiously, they removed any agency Spike had in going to the church himself to confront Vicious and instead had him moved there via capture. THEN, they had him be saved, walk out of the church then GO BACK IN....the grave sin there being that they played the song from the original anime during this scene but it doesn't have the same impact if Spike isn't walking up on the church strapped for war on his own volition. Furthermore, when Spike falls from the window, the emotional blow is cheapened because of who made him go through the window, the lack of the grenade explosion blowing out the stained-glass window, and him SOMEHOW WALKING FALLING 3 STORIES to the concrete off - as in the next scene he's seen limping his way back to the Bebop (which would have been very, VERY far away). Let's not even talk about them playing the song, "Green Bird" during his fall; lacking in all the emotions it carries in the original because they've literally changed the story.

    • @CyrussNP
      @CyrussNP 2 роки тому

I was so deeply offended by how they handled A Balled of Fallen Angels in this show. In the anime, it’s one of Spike’s most epic moments. He’s facing what is likely certain death (and alluding to his eventual death) against waves of syndicate hitmen by himself. That’s what made the scene that powerful. He showed up to rescue Faye, even though up until that point it didn’t really seem like he cares for her (if they didn’t want it to be Faye, it could’ve been Jet being held hostage instead and it would’ve worked for this show). And the fact he was able to survive only to be met by Vicious (who creepily emerges from the shadows like a ghost!) and was able to survive using his sleight of hand to toss a grenade at Vicious’ feet at the last second, made it one of the most powerfully epic moments in anime history IMO.
The Netflix version doesn’t do ANY of that!! And instead, Spike is rescued by Faye. They play the epic music only for Spike to take out two syndicate goons before facing Vicious. It’s such an atrocious desecration of the original that it’s hard to stomach, on TOP of the nonsensical and unnecessary “twist” that they thought was so clever. Instead of making Spike look like the competent syndicate enforcer that he was, this show makes him look like a clumsy fool who gets lucky occasionally. I honestly gave this show a chance and it ultimately disappointed me in the worst way.

Here's the reason the jazz that worked so well in the anime failed in the LA remake: because Netflix changed a serial show with a film noir vibe with multiple femme fatales to a soap opera with action scenes. Jazz isn't generally soapy, but was commonly used as soundtrack for film noir to the point of stereotyping.

The changes to the characters and how their stories play out just doesnt work very well especially with how they worked Julia and even altered Faye's direction. All the weird story arcs actually kind of reminds me of the writing from the other goofy Netflix show, Daybreakers. The actors all did an admiral job with what they were given while the failure of this show should fall on Netflix for not selecting the proper story writers to do such an iconic IP.

Been wanting to watch this review for a week now, but still had a few episodes left of the series so I wanted to wait. After finishing the series last night I just wanna leave my two cents here. As a diehard Bebop fan, I knew I was going to hate this. In the back of my mind I was hoping, but I wasn't expecting much. John Cho as Spike was atrocious. Im sorry, but he was a terrible Spike. I don't know if that's on the writing or the execution, but it did not work. All I saw was Harold for 10 straight hours. Jett was great all the way through, from start to finish. Mustafa killed the character. Daniella Pineda grew on me throughout the series as Faye. Hated her when she was first introduced and through she was unbearable. Once they broke her down a little bit, she became more likeable by the end, despite me still hating the actual actress. Vicious and Julia were both a joke. They were done so poorly. What the fuck was with Ed at the end? What was that? Like I understand wanting to keep the same goofiness as Ed has in the anime, but that did not work at all in a live action series. Please for the love of god, if this does get another season, you cannot have a real person act like that as Ed for 10 straight episodes. It'll be intolerable.

It's more likely that he just has a better understanding than most of the internet of where anger deserves to be placed. This show could've been a 0/10, and being angry at that would still be ridiculous. It's just one show in a endless ocean of entertainment products with an almost endless supply of good things to watch. There's always something out there that is fun and well done and words usually gets around of it of its existence. So all you have to do is turn away from the thing you aren't enjoying, and go try the thing that you will probably enjoy. All you're doing is placing a weight on yourself being angry at this.
It's a bit more understandable if the anger stems from a story that you've become invested in. Like the last two season of GoT or, in my case, everything after Negan was introduced to The Walking Dead. Getting angry at that is probably still ridiculous, but it's harder to let go after you've invested so much time on something. To clarify, an adaptation means that it's new and not a continuation of the story you were already invested in. If you went in with your investment of the source material, then that there is simply a rookie mistake.
In the case of Joe and Alex, they can't simply walk away cause it's their job to review it, but in that vein...they are essentially getting paid to review it. I couldn't be angry at that, and maybe they aren't either, but they know anger sells. It is "Angry Joe Show" after all.
