The History of Dobby (Origins Explained) - Harry Potter Documentary

- Today we’re going to be taking a look at one of the most beloved, innocent, and selfless characters of the entire series- Dobby.
Dobby the big hearted House Elf makes his first appearance in the Chamber of Secrets- when he enters the home of #4 privet drive at perhaps the worst moment imaginable- the same day that Vernon Dursley, Harry's terrible uncle, is having a very important business dinner.
Dobby did, however, act with good intentions, and from this moment onwards he continued to win over our hearts with each subsequent appearance. He brought so much to the series with hilarious lines, helped our hero through his journey, and is one of the most loyal and honest characters in the series.
HOWEVER, despite being a fan favorite, Dobby was severely underrepresented in the films, and actually had a much larger presence in the books.
Join me today as we discuss the ORIGINS of Dobby, finally giving him the spotlight he deserves.

I'm curious about how a magical version of ChatGPT would function in the world of Harry Potter. Would it be a talking book, a magical portrait, or perhaps something completely different? How do you think wizards and witches would interact with it?"
My favorite part was where Dobbie skateboarded on a shield down a flight of stairs while shooting Death Eaters in the head with his bow before taking down that giant elephant. And then Prof. Flitwick yells, "That Still Only Counts As One!"
Dobby had the Bravery of a Gryffindor
the Cunning of a Slytherin
the loyalty of a hufflepuff
and the creativity of a ravenclaw
🥰 and if there was a chance….. he would have been the perfect headmaster for the school 💞xxx
I liked the SCB theory that it was actually the "extra punishments" command that allowed Dobby to intercept Harry's letters. Like, in the house elves extreme interpretation of obeying commands, Dobby would think "well i haven't *done* anything to warrant extra punishments, so you're basically giving me license to break the rules as long as I punish myself afterwards." Similar to how Kreacher took a rather unique approach to what "out" meant when Sirius told him to "get out." Or when Harry has to think of every loophole he can when telling Kreacher to tail Malfoy.
Dobby's death is so sad!! So much so that even just watching this video and listening to your recount of it, made me come to tears.
I'm ALL for this, good stuff man. As beloved as Dobby is, there's still alot we don't know about him.
Perfect. Now do one on Kreacher and his role with the locket and the Battle for Hogwarts!
The diminishment of Dobby and the other House Elves in the Harry Potter films, is probably one of the changes that I hate the most!
Maybe in the TV show they will explore this more and hermoine trying to encourage freedom for them, that would be fun!
Yes, we talk about Dobby having less of a role in the movies, but all of the house elves got a shafted in the movies. They were supposed to be in there. There was supposed to be Dobby, Winky, and Kreacher, who is Regulus Black's house elf from the time of his childhood. The only problem was that he was in the final movies, but they didn't depict his character correctly. Basically, he was supposed to start as a grouchy old elf who couldn't stand Harry, Hermione, and Ron because he kind of shared pure-blood reasoning because of Regulus's opinions on Muggles. But over time, Kreacher decided he wanted to open up a little and actually become a nice person, make nice meals for Harry, and genuinely start to care about him.
One thing for certain don't piss off a house elf
The only house elf that wanted to be free
Lol If only Hermione could grasp this 😅 😂
Winky sure didnt want freedom. Dobby made her sick lol
My head cannon is he is from an ilk of free elves of olde. Who on occasion would help muggles and wizards for fun.
Such as shoemakers who then etch them into fairytale for muggles and servitude to wizards.
@Stitch-007
Do you think he was the only one that wanted to be free because he always did or maybe because Harry Potter showed him that wizards could be different so why couldn’t elves?
Dobby was 1 of my fave characters, and his death was the HARDEST one for me in the ENTIRE series!!! I cry EVERY.SINGLE.TIME! Ugh why did JK have to do that?!
Dobby was one of the few literary characters that really hit me hard when they died. RIP.
Dobby was always a cute house elf 😍😉
Whew, RIP to the realest ride or die of all time
i liked the movie-version of dobby getting freedom a little more: hiding the sock in the diary, which lucius gave to dobby... seemed more reasonable than harry hiding the diary in a sock, which lucius threw and dobby catched (as in: he didnt hand it over to dobby...still it was enough to grant him his freedom?)
So what i take from this is, Dobby broke his promise and never stopped helping Harry... we could all use a friend half as faithful as Dobby.
I am so glad to see that dear little Dobby has deserved a video of his own. I hope that the upcoming retelling of the HP stories will restore the character of Dobby to his rightful presence as a major character.
I think, they ruined the most beautiful story by making movies, one on each book.
Every book needed to be filmed, 3 or at least 2 parts.
They ruined every single character, that is important for storyline.
Like Peeves, Weasly family, Remus Lupin, Nimphadora Tonks, even Saverus Snap (in memories).
They just destroyed the entire series, just to "MAKE F*****G MONEY".
Another great insightful video! I love the ending so much!!
I think there's only 1 person dobby would have been happy to have as a master and that's harry I bet had harry asked dobby to be his house elf dobby would have accepted because dobby would know that harry would be very kind to him
RIP Dobby!
Anyone know why the playlists have unavailable videos?
I've noticed it too.. if I had to guess, HP Theory made the video private for one reason or another.
@@ImVexuli that stinks I loved listening to them
@dylandylan5526 me too man, it helps me relax and fall asleep.. especially the Hour long ones.. hopefully HP Theory has them saved back and re-uploads them or makes them public again. 😪
Wish star wars theory was still as entertaining as you are. Another great video.
I always thought of house elves as being the result of wizarding experimentation. A desire to develop a wizarding army to fight muggles because there weren’t enough wizards and witches to do the job. So the ministry of magic sought to create a magical creature that had certain powers and abilities, but could also follow orders. So they experimented with leprechauns and gnomes and pixies and fairies.
Dobby's death hurt so much.
I think they are under a curse that prevents them from acting against their masters. They are only loyal because, having been brutalised for centuries, they know that anything less than absolute fealty would lead to torturous punishment.
As "non-mortals", they are slaves that don't even have the sweet release of death to look forward to.
No wonder Dobby is such a sympathetic character.
Eugenics on mythical creatures is a wild thought 😂
Lol "hid Tom Riddle's Diary inside of Harry's sock."😂
I have an interesting question when he saw professor Snape's memory of how Harry Potter felt about his dad after seeing him bullying Snape as a kid.
Forgive me if I mis-remembering, but grip hook, noticed the fact that Harry manually dug dobby’s grave. It was this act that helped him have credibility with grip hook regarding breaking into gringotts.
It is stated that house elves are imprisoned by their own magic. What if a elf cursed his own kind to always desire to serve a wizard
I've thought Goblins diverged.
One line stayed goblin the other become elves
Bellatrix: Stupid elf! You could've killed me!
Dobby: Dobby never meant to kill. Dobby only meant to maim or seriously injure.
I don’t think that throwing a sock and Dobby catching it or Hermione knitting hats and leaving them out for the house elves to pick up counts as being “giving clothes”. I thought that Mr. Crouch giving Winky a proper set of clothes did. Didn’t they do the house laundry? Or were they ordered that doing laundry didn’t count as being “giving clothes”?
That story made me cry
I got in late on Harry Potter game so the movies were my first interaction. MOVIES ONLY Dobby’s death didn’t have a huge impact

Im not finding any video such as "everything known about goblin made items"
So maybe that's a video idea for you.
All I'm getting is goblin wars and no wands and occasionally gringots.
Rip dobby free elf ❤
I think you’re to kind to the wizards. Considering how most elves are viewed and treated, it’s more likely they were enslaved by the wizards.
I almost got my life together, but instead I decided to watch all the HP Theory videos
So I always wondered how Dobby intercepted Harry‘s letters. Could you please make a video explaining how intercepting letters is possible at Hogwarts and for Dobby.
Do you ever wonder “if Harry had been Dobby’s owner rather than the Malfoy’s would Dobby have wanted freedom?” He seems to have the kind of slavish love for Harry that most house elves have for their masters. Would he have wanted freedom from Harry?
Dobby died because he defied the order of harry (from book 2). Harry had asked (ordered?) dobby not to save him. In book 7, however, he did save him. in fact, those were his final words before apparating. Harry was however not dobby's master, nevertheless, dobby was deeply faithful to harry. This deep faithfulness might have caused him to be bound with harry in a milder master-elf relationship. This might have caused his death. How was that? The theory.
Lovely eulogy ❤️
we need to have a tv series about elves house elves
I say this as a joke but also mild curiosity since in HP so many things are real(dragons ghost elves etc) i low key wonder if their universe has Santa clause and if he has house elves who make the toys lol
Thank you
I love how he almost got Harry killed lol just to try to get him sent back he could have killed him
I like to think the house elves in Hogwarts are owned by the Headmaster/mistress and as each passes or leaves the ownership goes onto the next person. Most of the elves there have been there for several generations and new elves come every once in a while
Im sry it was hilarious watching dobby punish himself imo
Documentary fantastic beasts 4 and 5❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤newt scamander
😊🎉🗺🏜🦁
All elves go to heaven
They should get another house at Hogwarts and name it something to do with dobby
👍👍👍
2000 years a slave
My boyfriend hates him
❤
First Shitty Wizarding War. Forgotten by all.
ew
Unpopular opinion...Least favorite character (the jar jar binks of the harry potter world), and I was not sad he died.
People that don't like Dobby are people I'd be scared to be around.
