History of Hogwarts & All 4 Founders (Slytherin, Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw) - Harry Potter

- Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're discussing the COMPLETE history of Hogwarts and the lives of all 4 founders- Godric Gryffindor, Salazar Slytherin, Helga Hufflepuff and Rowena Ravenclaw.
In this video, I’ve left no stone unturned in the discussion of Hogwarts’ tumultuous history, and I’ve included everything I could possibly find on the school’s 4 founders.
By the end of this video, you’re going to be an expert.
I’m going to kick off things by discussing HOW the school was founded, then begin diving in to the rich histories of each founder.
Sit back, relax, and enjoy.
Hogwarts was founded at some point during the tenth century. It was built hidden off somewhere in the Scottish highlands (the exact location is never actually revealed)- and this was because the tenth century was a time of hardship for witches and wizards. During this time, every day, witches and wizards were being persecuted by muggles-who were intensely hostile when it came to witnessing sources of magic. In order to further protect the staff, students, and school itself- additional precautions were made in the form of charms - helping to further conceal the school from muggle trespassers. If a muggle were to just happen to stumble upon the school grounds- they would only see ruins, and signs warning them to stay away.
Hogwarts was founded when four 10th century witches and wizards got together, and decided that they had, in the sorting hat’s own words: ‘the selfsame yearning, to make the world’s best magic school’. These founders were Godric Gryffindor, Rowena Ravenclaw, Salazar Slytherin and Helga Hufflepuff. Thus, Hogwarts was born. The name Hogwarts actually came from founder Rowena Ravenclaw, who had a dream where a ‘warty’ hog lead her to a cliff by a lake - it’s also been speculated that this is how they chose the location for the school as well. After its establishment, like with any institution, a crest was formed for Hogwarts. Emblazoned upon the school crest are the words ‘Draco Dormiens Nunquam Titillandus’ - which roughly translates to ‘Never tickle a sleeping dragon’.

Another excellent video, pretty obvious it took some time to put it all together!👏🏻
Bravo! This video is simply brilliant. Hear me out on a few ideas. I don’t know where I heard this but I thought that the Diadem made the wearer More intelligent but also eventually turned them mad. I thought this was why Helena took it because she was worried that her mother was becoming too batty, And since others coveted it so much it was putting her life in danger. The second thing I wanted to mention was the Pensieve. Apparently it was there before Hogwarts was built and I’m wondering if the intelligent and and visionary Rowena.(I’m assuming that she had visions based on what you said about the lake. Perhaps the pensieve up on the cliffs near the lake was what was driving her to that location. I’m also wondering if perhaps Rowena while wearing that diadem overshared With her fellow founders and that was caused friction. I posit in her visions she could see that eventually Gryfendors were going to need special magic like the sword to Defeat dark wizards like Slytherins in the future. With the diadem she was also able to see that pure bloods we’re going to have a conflict with muggleborns and half bloods in the future and that caused friction with Salazar and the others and inspired him to create the chamber of secrets. She also probably told Helga that in order for her house to survive that they were going to have to provide ways to create the feasts at Hogwarts to aid future wizards and to keep them in favor with her fellow founders as well. And the this was the point where Helena thought enough is enough I am taking the diadem and then I’m hiding it in Albania! Unfortunately Rowena weekend a little bit from having gotten used to the diet and didn’t foresee that the bloody baron was going to kill her daughter over spurned love! How tragic! Perhaps the irony in the heartbreak were too much for her and that’s how she died 😢 Harry Potter tends to be dark and tragic.
Can you please explain how the pensive works, how it was made, what spells are on it, and, how dumbledore got it?
Thx

@@danielarthur2950 The pensieve was at that same location before the castle of Hogwarts was built. Its’ origin is not known. If I recall correctly. It is utilized to view your memories as well as other people’s memories. You can also re-relieve your brain of memories and view them later if you’re worried about it other people picking your brain. You can also use other peoples memories. The memories are stored in vials that you pour into the pensieve for viewing.
If you want to learn more about it I think the first time that Harry uses it for the first time in the goblet of fire
Brave Gryffindor, from Wild Moore, fair Ravenclaw from Glen, kind Hufflepuff from Valley Broad, and Slytherin from Fen. This was amazing, thank you for sharing.
I'd love to see a movie about the founders of Hogwarts
Honestly this video ALONE is enough plot fodder to make AMAZING back stories for all of them.
Nah we need a novel by Rowling which has deep lore about the founders and then a movie adaption by Warner Brothers in which they could have just the most crucial parts to make it a good and entertaining movie for non Harry Potter movies.
I think a series would be best, but that would be amazing.
a MUCH better idea thana reboot
Yeah continue the story
The thing I love most is how Salazar and Godric were friends despite their differences in some of their core beliefs, it gives me Xavier and Magneto vibes
Until he started talking hate and prejudice towards a group of people
@@mordred8740 Magneto or Salazar?
@@mordred8740ultimately neither set of characters cared that much. Professor X was never going to kill magneto and neither was gryfindor going to kill slyrherin
Well seid
I think Xavier and Magneto descended from them.
One of the cleverest theories I've ever heard is that the sorting hat sorts (forgive the redundancy) not by reading into what each child's predominant personality trait is, but what they value above all, even if they lack it themselves; this explains why someone like Pettigrew could have ended up in Gryffindor and somone like Lockhart in Ravenclaw, and still not be particularly brave or clever themselves; also why Snape was sorted "too soon" into Slytherin, since he was ambitious and valued power, and didn't set much store by his own bravery. Anyway, I just leave that in here since I thought it was quite interesting and marginally related to this video's topic. Love your videos! Keep it up💓
Headcanon accepted
That would explain why Hermione was in gryffindor too even though she is referred to as the smartest witch of her age a bunch of times
I’ve always loved this theory. Explains Neville as well
It all checks out imagine how evil Harry could have been. From being bullied to being the chosen one. And richest kid there. And and pure blood. But he chose griffindor values and almost begged the hat, which was going to place him in slytherine. And and and parceltongue. But either way him and Draco would have not been friends
@@etiennehowery4537 But Harry wasn't pureblood, his mother was Muggle-born.
Anyone else catching up on lore now that Hogwarts Legacy is out?
Yep 😀
Plenty of people I'm sure. I know lots of people rewatching the movies and reading the books too
Yessir lol
Yes lol 👍🏽
Oh hell yeah
I honestly wouldn’t mind seeing a movie or series based on the founders of Hogwarts. It would be interesting to see how they all got together, how they had an architect make the school and seeing the falling out of Salazar Slytherin and the rest over who should attend there.
I would also like to see the time where Merlin attended Hogwarts and see how he progressed from being a student there to his involvement in the Arthur legend.
Honestly Merlin shouldn’t even fit into the mold of Hogwarts. He was born and King Arthur ruled way before Hogwarts was even founded.
A massive, open world, 3rd person rpg video game would be way better.
Then, instead of watching the founding, you could PARTICIPATE in the founding.
Isn't every HP fans biggest wish and desire to be IN hogwarts?
Merlin predated the founders
Theory:
Each founders students actually needs other founders students qualities just like each founder needed their friends qualities.
Salazar needed more compassion to be able to forgive Muggles.
Rowena needed the courage to be vulnerable in front of her friends and the humility to ask for help before it was too late.
Godric needed more communication skills and more emotional intelligence to bring his friend back from the darkside before he went too far.
Helga needed to be more ambitious. She needed to be the one to bring everyone together.
Anybody else that the Hogwarts founders are an rpg party? Hufflepuff is the healer, Gryffindor is the fighter, Ravenclaw is the mage, and Slytherin is the rogue.
No
I am now
Would slightly alter it to say that Gryffindor is the tank.
@@TheMacC117 Paladin-esque for sure
Aren't they all mages, though?
I think GG knew about the Basilisk in the Chamber of Secrets but didn’t know where. Probably spent most of his time trying to find it but wasn’t able to. So instead he enchanted the sorting hat to provide a true gryffindor his sword for when slytherins heir appears so they could defend the school from the snake.
Lol yeah because a sword is a Great weapon against a massive, ancient creature that you can't even look at without dying instantly....... Lolol

I like the idea that Salazar Slytherin was from Ireland and that his family was fleeing persecution. Since he's a parselmouth, it ties him to druidism and events like St. Patrick driving snakes from Ireland. Obviously there are hundreds of years between Patrick and Salazar, but that may lend to the theory that he inherited his disdain of muggles from his parents. His family may have been attacked hundreds of years prior, maybe having their snake companions driven from their land.
Snakes just means protestants. Non catholics.😂
It would be fitting considering each other realm of the islands has representation in the school. It would also explain the green.
@@scottsetzke7967protestantism wasnt a thing until like 1000 years after st patrick 🤣
And if his parents moved to England when he was 4 or 5 years old, Salazar and Godric could still become childhood friends.

Rowena had such a tragic life.
It's interesting to know that her tiara might not even have been enchanted to give wisdom, it would give more credit to Rowena herself.
It's been a while since I've read the books, but I always pictured Helena as quite petty, childlish and jalous of her mother, from her description and story in the books. Again it's been a while so maybe I missread a that time, but I felt like when it was explained how she stole her mother's tiara, she was portrayed quite badly.
Your video helped me add a new layer of relatability and understanding to her character, because even though her mother might not have herself put any pressure on her daughter's shoulders, Helena still had an utterly massive legacy to live up to, and that much pressure for sure a young girl (which would certainly explain her behavior) would've been too much to handle.
I like to think that Salazar was a fan of Rowena, respecting her wisdom and knowledge
So Tom Riddle & Snape were both half blood going against Salazar’s feelings but were two of his greatest students.
Yeah kinda flies in the face of the whole pureblood is best thing
@@mordred8740 exactly what I have thought about the entire narrative. She constantly used characters like these to push the pure blood plot when they were not even close to being one’s. Was it just because they didn’t like that they were not?
@Darren Cole It's because they're all stand in for Hitler. Who was not blond and blue eyed, which is what he wanted his Germany to reflect. These people seek to destroy that which they felt made them weak! It's a fault of the human experience, whatever we are that we're built upon that we think makes us weak we want to destroy it not understanding its what also gives us strength.
@@mordred8740 so very true. The “Aryan” race was the biggest joke ever. I always laughed at all of Hitler’s generals that always were not blonde & blue eyed. He sold the myth through his oration but never actually brought it to truth except in his youth program that was a huge failure. He stole people from countries that he hated to push his myth if they looked the part.
and the hat was going to put harry in slytherin but he contested. he is half blood. just confusing lol
I have thought about a theory as to why salazar slytherin didn't trust muggles.
Look at the time he lived, a time where muggles were burning or drowning witches and wizards en masse (which is part of real history) which could be seen as a potential existential threat.
So is it not unreasonable to think that the children of muggles might just (accidently or not) leak vital information that could threaten the lives of students and staff at the school or even the wizarding world at large.
So to make preferences for students who don't have muggles in their family could be considered a safer option.
Even the chamber of secrets could've had not so evil motivations (at least at first), being large enough to fit all students and staff if the school was under serious threat and a terrifying basilisk as a form of protection. And would only follow salazar after his fallout with gryffindor.
I'm a Hufflepuff, and I know many people say "it' rubbish!" but I think that knowing you are a hard worker and being loyal to other people is very nice.
Said just as a Hufflepuff mate. It is very nice indeed.
What?
Those are one of the best qualities a person can have so good for you!
And most important of all, the food is delicious
I always think of Hufflepuff as the quieter and humbler version of Gryffindor.
If Griffindor was at Hogwarts during Harry’s sixth year Umbridge wouldn’t have set foot on the Campus. I’m sure the other Founders would’ve felt similarly but he’d straight up fight the Ministry itself than back down

man i wish jk would of went so much deeper into this world and wrote more books. Id of loved to see a series surrounding these guys and even go over seas to other schools and experience how they lived and their schools.
She probably went way, way deeper, but never wrote it to be published. Maybe a post mortem gift, but I doubt it.
@Jass Zoigel honestly JK Rowling isn't super talented at world building. At least it's hard to say she is when comparing her to the greats in the Arena like Tolkien. Her ideas were great but many things were not thought out as well as they should have been. Quidditch for example is a good example because it's right there in your face. It's used as a literary tool but the game itself is ruined by the lack of thought put into its ruleset. There are examples like this all over the books. Time travel being given to a student to commit academic fraud, Ron being the greatest wizard of all time when you start tallying up his accomplishments that were written for comedic effect, ect.
None of this is meant to say that Hogwarts isn't a fun or interesting setting(it is.) More so to illustrate Rowling's weakness in this area. And if we're being fair most Fictional settings suffer from problems like this. It's clear, however, that while Rowling may have had the general outline of the story she wanted to tell from the start, there were many things she put little to no thought in, paeticularly in the first few books that don't hold up under scrutiny upon further review.
@@kristopherdickson6606 To be fair it was written mainly for kids so she probably thought she wouldnt have to go to deep into as kids wouldnt think about it much. Plus she had no idea it would become the biggest book series ever and would have millions of people scrutinizing it 20 years later lol. Your def right though there were many questionable things that just made no sense.
@@mech0p sure and that's fair. But the same example I used, Tolkien, started off writing not just a Children's story in The Hobbit, but one specifically tailored for his children. He went on to write the Lord of the Rings and while he did receive some fame for his work, the majority of it came after his death. The reason I think it's a good comparison is that Tolkien's world is incredibly detailed and does hold up under intense scrutiny. It's also interesting to see the dynamic of his incredible world building in contrast to his relatively dry writing ability when it came to story telling. The Lord of the Rings suffer many problems in this regard.
Anyway, it's all apples and oranges. Rowling did successfully create an incredible world with many details that's just legitimately fun to read about and incredible to see brought to life in the movies and now in Hogwarts Legacy. So I think the core essence of what World Building is all about was captured. I just think saying that Rowling was particularly talented in this niche is a step too far. It's more like Rowling was a talented author and had an interesting premise and setting but actually struggled with the world building aspect of it in many areas. The key evidence for this is that Rowling molded the setting to fit the story. In contrast Tolkien created the setting and then told a story in it. Big difference.
@@kristopherdickson6606you only gave one example of a great world builder, Tolkien, who is the single greatest world builder ever to exist. He literallt revolutionized the concept. It’s not fair to compare Rawling to him or say she isnt a great worldbuilder because she fell short of what Tolkien achieved. That’s nonsense. She is still a great worldbuilder. She created one of the most popular fantasy worlds ever with the exception of Lord of the Rings which will never have an equal…
That's funny. I'm a Ravenclaw in Hogwarts Legacy, and my grandmother's name was Rowena. Our ancestry is from Scotland, and my mother had a falling-out with her mother Rowena.

Wow, nice work! Thank you so much, I really enjoyed it ❤️
Love these longer presentations. Apart from his prejudice (which is understandable if not agreeable) Slytherin's pureblood stance would ultimately have proven dangerous, for the magical and muggle communities, since you can't have magical folk (half-blood and muggle-born) running round using magic they don't know how to control.
I love the very long videos. Keep ‘em coming man
yesss been waiting for the theory for awhile, I thought your gone through these lore first. Awesome 👍🏼
I've been wandering, since Godric Gryffindor was experienced in sword play. How come he didn't teach or enlist martial combat teachers to teach students of Hogwarts to defend themselves against muggles or other wizards when they've been disarmed? Was there a mystic martial arts?
Godrick had a great respect for muggles and dueling, so it's likely that he trained with swords so he could have a more fair bout with muggles.
Also, given the time and area he was born in, it's not an impossibility Godrick fought in many of the muggle wars happening in the region at the time. Can't really be going around sligging curses in the middle of a battlefield without someone catching wind of it.
I doubt swordplay and martial arts became a class in Hogwarts for much the same reason Muggle Studies isn't very respected: why care about what muggles need to do when you have magic?
@@OlympusPublicAffairsthere goes the Knights of Godrick.
@@OlympusPublicAffairs because what muggles lack in magic they more than make up for in their use of science, what good is magic when a muggle can take you out from half a mile away and never be seen or heard?
@@AbysmalRapture There's a pretty big difference in magic and weapons: magic is not inherently designed to kill like weapons are. Weapons serve one purpose, while magic has thousands of other uses.
@@OlympusPublicAffairs well yes, but if you're a certain dark wizard who wants to try and enslave or wipe out the muggle world you may want to know what their weapons are capable of. You also have to think about eventually science will evolve to the point of being like magic, from what I can tell there's not a lot of advancements in magic like there is in science

I feel like Salazar probably had greater hatred for muggles later in life due to loss, knowing Godrick since he was young I feel it would have tempered him, so it would need to be a loss of someone he valued as much as his good friend if not more. Okay, QUESTION? (Probably doesn't have a clear answer that I haven't found though...) So did the Sorting Hat itself decide to admit halfbloods and the rare muggleborn to Slytherin if they were just that cunning enough, after Slytherin left the school or died? There were certainly a number of halfbloods in Slytherin, and according to Rowling, while very rare, once in a while a muggleborn was put there as well. I can't see Slytherin himself accepting this while he was alive. It was possible a few students had parents that hid their child's half-blood heritage for obvious reasons before the creation of the Sorting Hat, but it is generally very hard to pull one over on Slytherin himself. The child itself would have to _wholeheartedly_ believe they were pureblood, as well as Slytherin never meeting the parents to use Legilimins on them, to discover any falsifying.
His bigotry has nothing to do with the nature of magic or it’s presence in any individual. So the hats magic most likely wouldn’t use that as a stipulation for sorting. It’s also possible that the remaining founders altered the magic after he left to disregard his preferences.
I figured it was just based on mental characteristics, so even though the hat knew he wouldn’t like it, it was told to base the decision on what’s in the mind and not the blood.
His voice is just so calming and warm its just perfect for this kind of video's ❤
Your voice is perfect for this! ❤

I could be late, but I would looovvvee a miniseries or a movie trilogy on these 4. Something that outlines each one of their lives from birth; telling the story of how they became so powerful, and how they ultimately came together to form the school. Next in the series could show how they dealt with the struggles of their individual values placed in the school. I would love to see the bad-a** villain Slytherin becomes, his forming of the chambers and his hatred of half-bloods. I would also love to see each of them battling their personal issues like Raven-claws issues with her daughter and her daughter's downfall. The ending of the series could be an epic battle of 3 against 1 where each show their strengths in an effort to restore or build peace at Hogwarts after Slytherins take-down.
Well shall see what they end up doing with the Hogwarts Legacy. WB announced they plan on a sequel and a series so they could make a series on founders

Loved it, thank you… Here, a blessed Hufflepuff (I’d really like to know more about the subjects taught at Hogwarts, thanks!)
So when youre talking about the sword of Gryffindor you say that the goblin spread rumors that its his. Goblins believe that the creator is the owner not the holder/purchaser
If the selection of houses was true shouldn’t Hermione be in Ravenclaw and Ron in Hufflepuff.
It would make much more sense. Having 1 main character in each house, with Harry in Gryffindor and Draco in Slytherin.
Actually technically speaking Harry was going be Slytherin, and yes hermine was going be ravenclaw as the sorting house suggested. But yeah idk why
this is probably really late but hermione values bravery over intellegence. she said it herself in the first book and even went onto more adventures in the succeeding books. ron is a tried and tested weasley who followed his siblings to be a gryffindor. no sense in ron being a hufflepuff whatsoever since ron is pretty recklessly brave himself, after choosing to help break harry out of his house or even use godric's sword to destroy a horcrux.
despite all this and personalities, the sorting hat takes into consideration your choice either way. just like how harry was considered to be in slytherin, but harry was so bent on choosing gryffindor.
I just started book one in my mid 20's, and I'm enjoying it so much. I used to read a lot more when I was younger, and I promised myself I would read these at some point. Well, I have no internet at the moment, so it seemed like a good time to start. And jeez. These go WAY deeper than the movies. I love hearing about all these other things you dont see in the movies.

The hat initially wanted to place Harry Potter into Slytherin but power-hungry is the last thing that comes to mind when I wanna describe Harry
But he's quite cunning and ambitious, it's just not in a malicious way. Also keep in mind in addition to that, it was also detecting Voldemort, a Slytherin, in Harry. So he was getting double the input.
@@xiphos8219 That, my friend, makes more sense than even the reason why humans can't achieve unassisted power flight irl.
@@kenichiotaku3693 watch the goblet of fire and note how proud and boastful he is when he survives the Dragon
Other than being overly repetitive it was an informative video.
Medieval law-makers tended to place the boundary between childhood and adulthood at puberty, coventionally 12 for girls and 14 for boys. They weren't considered "children" the way we think of them now.
Great video. Sometimes it's hard to hear the voice over the music though.
Fantastic video. I wonder where the magic started? What was the source? and why were some magic but not others?
We need a movie about the rising of Hogwarts ❤️
Great video! Thanks! I wish WBs would make a series of these guys instead of remaking Harry's story
Thanks so much
I've often wondered about Hermione being in Gryffindor instead of Ravenclaw...
The Hat seems to sort people based on their desires/aspirations over their actual traits
I think Hermione never becomes a Ravenclaw because you have to think outside of the box rather than follow what's written in the books.
At ten yrs old, I can assure you, Dumbledore was NOT a Gryffindor, but most likely a Slytherin as the young Dumbledore only seemed power until it nearly killed him, then he bcm more Ravenclaw in the pursuit of knowledge to protect others, & protecting others made him a Gryffindor.
The sorting hat needs only predict who you will be while in puberty.
I love backstories, so when I wrote This Peculiar Magic, I delved into what life was like for the main character before heading to the academy to study and live with others like himself. We get to understand the feeling of being the only person, it seemed, with his "affliction."
Honestly, I can't help but think that more Ravenclaw's would probably ally themselves with Slytherin.
Why
also the fact that Cedric Diggory was chosen as the tri champion out of the ENTIRE SCHOOL! Go hufflepuff! im a ravenclaw, but hufflepuff is my fave house
He wasn't chosen from the entire school, Dumbledore put the age line around the cup. Which was only supposed to allow 7th years. So he was the best choice out of those 7th years that did put their names in.
@@RandalltheVandall I know but still, thats pretty good! :)
It certainly took guts to put his name in, which he didn't have to do.
I love the video! My only suggestion would be to lessen up on the "subscribe" and "like" pop-ups. it takes away from the experience. A few times in the beginning is enough
Thanks Professor Binns
Make time stamps please, other than that Great video!!
I already like the game cause it made Harry Potter relevant again
At 29:51, the photo is of Hermitage Castle in the Scottish Borders. I was so surprised to see it pop up, I live within walking distance of it!
Where did you find the material for this? Is all this in the books?
Wish they would expand the wizarding world. Honestly, I would love a TV series about the founding of Hogwarts!
They need to make a spin off tv series about the founders 😬😬. Seeing as the fantastic beasts movies didn’t catch on or become the cash cow they hoped for, even though there was supposed to be 5 I doubt there will be. Especially considering the majority of the originals aren’t super eager to return to the series I think this would be amazing.
And jk needs to not be the head writer, maybe a consultant. She's a book person
*Slytherin and Hufflepuff get in a battle*
*Hufflepuff yeets bare cake at him with her wand*
*he gets smothered in cake and is defeated* 😂😂
This is very nice, just running into it. Just subscribed. two things. Slytherin allowed half bloods. Snape is one. The other thing, though i will look through your videos, is this seems to be about Gryffindor and Slytherin and not much about Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw.
your the best history of magic teacher
Years back i did the house sorting test and got ravenclaw but i did it today and got slytherin
Same, I got Gryffindor years back and now got Slytherin.
In watching while waiting for game to release. 2 and half hours!
If ”by defeating Gellert Grindelwald" you mean Newt Scamander, Newt was a Hufflepuff, not a Gryffindor.
Pretty sure Dumbledore was who he was referring to
Things I would love to see on book or screen: A police-like mystery story following aurors, an origin story of the founding of hogwarts, prequel about how voldemort rose to power and the first wizarding war, stories of merlin's time during hogwarts and a new story following a different Wizarding world school. There's Beauxbatons, Durmstrang, Mahoutokoro, Uagadou, Castelobruxo or Ilvermorny to choose from so there is a lot of choice and range. I really hope they make something new and fresh and don't just decide to reboot Harry Potter.
Oh and a Draco redemption story.
Gryffindor: England
Ravenclaw: Scotland
Hufflepuff: Wales
Slytherin: Ireland
They are all great, but they all bow to the one true King of England, Gryffindor🦁🦁
26:20 as much as i love the inclusion of the welsh dragon in harry potter, i really wish they were red, there is absolutely no where in history that depicts the welsh dragon as green they’ve only ever been red, i understand that considering this series is a work of fiction it’s probably going to stray pretty far from reality, but if your going to include part of a countries real life folklore you may as well get it right
(srsly though helga was an amazing witch, im glad that we have such amazing fictional characters to represent my home
