You know...I didn't really plan for this to come out on April Fools. But it's kinda poetic considering how much I thought there was no way this was happening 🤣 Hope y'all enjoy! And don't forget you can watch the rest of S5 early by becoming a Member or Patron! S6 will start recording next week! :D
One of my favourite hidden gems from this episode, is that right around when this came out, Jack in the Box was having a promotion giving out free churros. It wasn't kindness for Bojack, *everyone* got a free churro.
That's not just a silly ending gag, it also says something about Bojack as a person. Though it's hard to tell what exactly it says. Maybe he was so focused on his own turmoil that the funeral attendees never registered with him. Or maybe he looked at this room full of cold-blooded lizards and thought "sounds about right" because how would he know what kind of company his mother kept after he left the house? Also shout outs to the lizards being so chill. They saw this man crash their funeral and start venting and just sat there quietly because clearly he needed that.
Just FYI the geckos you see at the end of the 'Free Churro' episode are called "Lepidodactylus lugubris" but they are commonly known as "Mourning Geckos."
Free Churro is one of the best Bojack Horseman/overall television episode I have ever seen. I've watched it 10 times by now and I've somehow cried every single time. The writing is just absolutely perfect there is so many layers to it and a lot to unpack but it's still very simple in a way, and it's devastating. And the fact that it's all one take and just a long monologue makes it feel so real, you said it best when you said "this feels like someone is giving a real eulogy". There's so many moments that hit home for me and it just showcases how good this show is in general at showing relationships and the impact they have on their lives. A perfect episode with extraordinary writing and execution.
It was an extremely enjoyable episode for so many reasons. I think younger me, like when this show came out, would've hated something like this - calling it slow and boring. But all the points leading up to here just make this work so damn well. Truly best in class.
As someone with an awful mother as well, this episode had me SOBBING. Even still, certain lines get me tearing up every damn time. "I'm your *_son!_* All I _had_ was you!"
Shortly after Free churro released someone uploaded it full to UA-cam, now it's taken down, obviously. But I remember putting that video to watch and listen to it while I did the dishes. If you manage to watch it in silence and just eat through the whole episode it's incredible how well the episode flows and how all the themes are strung together so flawlessly. I can't imagine the amount of rewrites and work they must've put in that episode alone. And the deliverance by Will Arnett is absolute gold. Now we have an episode of Bojack with pretty much no dialogue (Fish out of water - S3) and another that's nothing but a monologue.
Free Churro is definitely in the hall of fame of great TV episodes. Bojacks realization about the ICU sign still hits so hard. Fun Fact: Since Will Arnett voices Bojacks dad and Bojack, he is the only VA present in this episode. Hope he got paid extra for this :D
I think I made a comment about that or maybe I cut it, can't remember now lol but episodes like this are always funny to me because I ALWAYS think about how much they saved by having less VAs lol
I've been waiting for your reaction to this one for a while now. Free Churro is my favorite episode of Bojack Horseman. It's just such a bold decision to have an entire episode of a cartoon that's just a single character giving a monologue, especially for such a serious topic, and it does it perfectly.
The Eulogy is one of my favorite episodes. I know people with parents like that and it makes the episode hit a little harder. It always makes me think of what those people are going through and how they will feel when that happens. It's a fascinating episode.
It's getting harder to use my scale these days haha I've done away with it in newer recordings. I'll likely skip it for S6, cause I know that's just going to be crazy
I definitely like the backstory we get for Princess Carolyn in Episode 5, and I like that it shows that she keeps going despite everything. But Free Churro is a whole other episode, it’s really well done, and as someone who has given a eulogy at their own mother’s funeral (although I was lucky enough to have a fantastic mother, unlike BoJack) it captured the empty feeling you have and that feeling that you can never move forward in your relationship because they are gone. Enjoyed your reactions to both episodes!
It's really easy to think of Will Arnett as "the reeses commercial guy" or "the funny lego batman guy" but Bojack Horseman really did wonders to show off what an incredible voice actor he is
I just recommend that you watch Free Churro a few times (also recommend Johnny2Cello? 's analysis videos of alot of the biggest episodes and especially this one). I think the first episodel gets beaten by Ruthie as a PB episode, even though it explains a lot about her past. That episode also is supposed to point out how bojack and PB both went through awful abuse, but shows that you CAN end up better and not totally broken, aka PB.
I'll have to check them out - I likely will once I'm done with the series and have a complete overview. I'm sure you wouldn't recommend me anything that'd spoil the show - but I don't want to accidently have my opinions or thoughts swayed, just yet!
yes! Johnny 2 Cellos has some TOP NOTCH bojack videos, breaking down things you may miss on first or even fifth watch. So much goes into this show it's downright masterful writing and animation
One of the most difficult things is trying to persuade family \ friends to watch this show. They watched the first few episodes and just give up 😢😢 Which is such a shame as they're missing out on amazing episodes like these 2..... Oh well 😢
A lot of these shows I've done for the channel I wouldn't have given much of a chance on my own. I'm thankful to have started doing reactions so I could be exposed to new great shows!
P.C.'s mom is the classic crab in a bucket. She doesn't have the life she wants, so she wants to hold everyone else down too; if someone from her same situation succeeds, that means she'd have to face that she could have made something of herself too if she had done something differently.
@@quinintheclouds if you go crabbing you'll see every time one crab starts to get out of the bucket, another will pull it back down; so it's become a saying about people who don't want to see others succeed and pull them down instead of trying to climb out too.
"What other show [can have an episode] that is just the main character talking for 20+ minutes?" I can think of two: "Hawkeye" from MASH (This is almost a perfect reflection of that classic episode) "Heaven Sent" from Doctor Who (and that's over forty minutes)
14:45 PC and Bojack had mother's that wanted the opposites for them. Bojack's mother wanted a child she could be proud of, constantly pushing him to do better or seek higher status, didn't matter that he was famous and rich off a TV show. PC had a mother that didn't care about merit or status, just wanted money. Working hard and getting a high paying career would've been great but that's long term, PC could've been a rich housewife first then pursued a self-sufficient career and her mother would've seen the latter as pointless. The irony is that their mother's would have probably been happier if their children switched. Bojack made it big on TV and now he and PC's mom don't need to work. PC carved out a career for herself, she's working to be the boss. Bojack's mom would've been proud of a child that turned out to be a producer instead of just a performer like she was. (It's why she always jabbed his performances, to push HIM into making and starring in works. Why blame him for the plot when he just performed?)
Bojack Horseman is 1 of the best shows of all time for me and it has to be because it hits so close to home. I haven't talked to my mom in about 10 years now. She is manipulative, abusive, never satisfied with what I do, emotionally scarred me as a child which still hasn't been resolved as I'm 35 now. It's not gonna be long before I will be standing at that casket saying: I'm your son, all I had was you. I just can't imagine feeling sad about it, about never having resolved the situation. We were never close and we will never be close. Some families are like that. I made my peace with it. You don't HAVE to like your parents.
Because I like watching the shows like a normal person. Pausing is so inorganic to me, it's not how I'd watch a show on my own. If I miss something, it's not the end of the world. I'll see it in editing and if not then, then when I go to watch it on my own again.
@@EversPrimeTime Everyone's different, so this isn't a judgmental question -- do you normally watch shows and talk through them the way you would in a reaction? Obviously it's preferable to a reactor just sitting there and saying nothing lol, but I do sometimes feel like you're getting on an unrelated tangent (mood) that makes you accidentally miss key moments, and it makes me go "no no listen to this part!!!" XD I'm a pauser myself because I talk a lot, but I totally get not wanting to start and stop the episode too much. It's more just when you have a lot to say while not looking at the screen that I understand people being a little frustrated or disappointed. No avoiding it, all reactors are gonna miss SOME things while watching unless they sit there in boring silence! But don't feel pressured to keep the end-of-video analyses short. It's the ideal time to delve into your longer thoughts imo :)

It’s always funny how they have Bojack say “TV’s supposed to be a visual medium!” RIGHT before they have an entire episode that’s just a eulogy.
So good 🤣

And free chorro is only the second best episode of the show.
Nothing beats The View From Halfway Down in the season 6.
