Fretless Harmonic Slide Funk Rock Bass Grooves

- Fretless fun with sliding harmonics, double stops, heavy fingerstyle, palm muting and other groovy stuff on my Cortex bass. To slide a fretless harmonic you just have to push it down and let your fingers and imagination go, so much fun! I’m digging in hard at parts to make the bass rattle, love that natural gain of just strings and wood vibrating without frets. Going a bit wild towards the end with some improv and palm muting, my videos are realtime performances without edits so what you see is what you get. I pick out the take with most feel and attitude above a flawless one, expression is key. No plugins were used, just bass, amp and pedals. Some volume leveling is done in mixing, I also added a few drum crashes and fills after the performance since I always improvise a bit on these pieces, besides that, I aim to keep things as pure and transparent as possible.
This fretless Cortex bass has a flamed maple fingerboard, chocolate maple neck, walnut body and spalted maple top. It’s loaded with a Nordstrand Dual Coil pickup with 2-band Glockenklang preamp and is strung up with Ernie Ball Super Slinkys. The fingerboard has a thin layer of epoxy and compound radius, the wing reaches the 28th position, that’s a high b. I used 3 pedals: a Darkglass Hyper Luminal compressor, a Rodenberg 707b clean booster and an Ebs Multicomp, no digital post-processing. The signal was recorded with the DI from my Eich T-1000 amp with a Focusrite Scarlett into my laptop in Cubase. Drums are made with Addictive Drums, mastering was done with Ozone. Amazing as usual, just with the bass you make songs that are authentic auditory works of art it is notorious just by watching the video and listening to the songs that you put a lot of effort and training into composing each song, even though you are not as famous as other musicians in my opinion yours skill surpasses many, because his compositions sound very good to the listeners bringing many different feelings in each of the songs but that mostly causes a feeling of calm, comfort along with a relaxing sensation. In many moments of stress, anger or frustration, listening to his songs has been of great help. My favorite instrument is the bass and the thing that most influenced me to love the bass more than other instruments was listening to your music, so thank you so much for being such a talented bass player, thank you so much for writing such rich and amazing music, and thank you for masterfully showing the beauty of bass.

Great stuff! Unlike most youtube 'bassists,' you don't spend all your time widdling away above the twelfth fret but play proper basslines. Coupled with your wicked right hand technique, it's all very listenable.

I think the difference in technique between Les Claypool and REMCO is that the former uses his thumb and the rest of his fingers to play and REMCO is all fingers... I think REMCO's style is one of the best I've heard on a fretless electric bass... I also love Les Claypool's technique and style... but he's very freaky (really)...

Glad you dig it Rigel! Here I'm using 3 pedals: a Rodenberg 707b clean booster, a Darkglass Hyper Luminal compressor and an Ebs Multicomp to add some gain at parts. That's the heart of my setup, besides that I have a Boss OC-2 octaver and a Walrus Audio D1 delay on my board. It's what I use in general and on most videos as well, I don't use plugins and record the signal with the DI from my Eich T-1000 amp. Cheers!
