    I had this exact same thing happen to my Metabo DH 330. I was using it to flatten a 25 cm wide oak beam. Everything was going fine until the beam got stuck. When I got it out there was big groove in the wood. After turning it on again it made a screeching sound and smoke was coming out and I thought I broke the engine. After pulling off the plastic clover I noticed the wooden chips nested between the blade and the metal cover and as a result, one of the bolts became loose and started scratching the frame which probably caused the smoke.
    I'll definitely be checking my blades now before each use now.

    I have this exact model and have to just warn people about the blades. I bought a spare set of blades at the same time I bought the thicknesser, knowing I'd go through blades eventually, and well now I see that they don't fit. Admittedly I live in the butt-crack corner of the world, which is why I bought spate blades with the machine, but beware, just because the packaging says it'll fit a DH330, don't necessarily trust it. The blades for a DH330 model shown here are 332x12x1.5. I bought blades that are labelled by Metabo as being for the DH330, but that are 334x16x2. They do not fit. I vaguelly like their products but I won't buy Metabo again. This just passed me off

    • @OneSingleBreath
      @OneSingleBreath 2 роки тому +1

      Do you know, that they have to types of blades for the DH330? The one type, who is installed if you buy it. These are single use blades, sharpened on both sides. Then they have other ones, which are sharpened only on one side, and can be sharpened again. If you want to install these, you need some sort of conversion kit, as far as I know. I just looked up the german Metabo Side, and can only find the single use one. Perhaps the other ones aren‘t available anymore, and you managed to receive these.

    Holy crap! I'll be checking my planer right away (when I get home)! I loved it at the start, but right now it's gone absolutely useless, so I was planning on taking the knives out and turn them around anyway, but I might just go all the way and install the helical head I got for it instead! Thought I'd wear out the blades first and see how it performs without the helical so I can compare and then bask in the glory of the upgrade, but it seems this issue has bumped it right up my to-do list! Thanks for that :)

    Thanks for making this video... although there are many people complaining on the forums about this design flaw somehow there is 0 videos on UA-cam about this issue.. it's weird that despite some of the earliest posts I could find about this problem date some 7-8 years ago Metabo has never made a correction or even acknowledged the issue.. I wonder if one could make a thicker retaining plate which will be stronger in keeping the blade down or is it the fact that the blade is so thin that it just bends.. more alarmingly many users report having this issue after using the machine with soft wood only such as pine... I have ordered the same thicknesses from a local supplier and they are expecting delivery around the 20th .. now I'm seriously considering buying something else such a Dewalt or Makita... the price of the DH330 is too attractive but I'm not sure if I want to deal with such issues..

    I was about to order one of these as I felt they were the best of the lunchbox style units but the bending of the blades is a poor design. Just seen there is one made by Axminster AW318BT and the blade fixing plates look cast, certainly don't look like they will allow flex at all.

    I am considering the Metabo to replace my 110volt Harbor freight 6 year old . It appears the cutter head is identical and I have never had this problem Blades seem to last about a year (not particularly heavy use but I did clean up 10, 200mm x 28 mm 2.4 meter rough cut oak). Could the Gib plate have been distorted from the start ?

    I'm actually looking for such a machine, and I read a lot of posts on forums. Except this video on UA-cam, and 2 or 3 posts on forums, I didn't found so much about customers being impacted by this design flaw. I would even say that most of them are very happy with this Metabo DH330, even after some month or years of use (and yes, some of them have use it on Oak). That makes me think that this major issue is not general on every machine. Could it be a problem of initial wrong blade positionning ? Or an incorrect tightening of the plates ??

    • @gnif
      @gnif 6 місяців тому

      I recently bought this exact machine and after planing two lengths of pine, I already had a nick in the blade. On disassembly I found the EXACT same fault here. After cleaning things out and reversing the blade to the fresh side, ensuring that everything was tightened up again, it immediately did it again. The knives this planer comes with are garbage, already looking to upgrade with a helical blade.

    Have this model and during very first "blades refreshing" ive noticed the same problem - maybe just a bit less serious than yours :-| What is more - main motor wheel (dont know exact name) has gotten loose and ruined V-belt. I could screw it back on but because of horrible placement of the wheel it requires dismounting almost whole machine! Im very dissapointed not only with this thicknesser but now im bit reluctant to buy anything from metabo..

    Having the same trouble with my DH330. The backing plates just aren’t strong enough. It doesn’t look as though Metebo are doing anything about it. After about 1 hour or less of use, the blades are jammed again with shavings.Metedo should by rights supply replacements free of charge, but that wouldn’t cure the problem. A stronger plate is required. I take the blades out and straighten the backing plates with a hammer, but it just happens again. Come on Metebo….sort it. Al’s beehives

    This maybe a silly comment but and you probably already know but I think with these machines not being big powerful floorstanding types the wood must go in with the grain? Is it scuping chunks under the blade? Against the grain?
