- Rules:
1. Only my starter in battle
2. No items in battle, except held items
3. No glitches, exploits, save states, or RNG manipulation
4. No evasion moves before level 100*
Rule details:
-- *In gen1, evasion boosting is allowed if the Pokemon does it through means other than learning the move by level up or TM. For example, using Mimic or Mirror Move to boost evasion is allowed. (This exception is to keep ranking consistent with my legacy videos.)
-- I am allowed to manipulate my starter
-- I play the game at 4x game speed
-- For fair comparisons all my Pokemon have perfect (or near perfect) DVs / IVs
-- I am allowed to catch HM users - I can use all field moves
-- All in-battle glitches are allowed in generation 1
-- In generation 1, I'm allowed to skip Marowak with the Poke Doll
-- Surge's trash-can-puzzle is automatically solved
-- The bike is allowed in gen1, banned in gen2, and allowed for bypassing terrain in gen3
-- Saving between league members is allowed
-- If the solo Pokemon faints and I choose to blackout it counts towards my reset counter

I still think total EXP at finish would be a great way to show how much training a mon needed to finish the game
I just want to know where that bonk counter is at
I second this and have been thinking about it for a long time. Level depends on growth rate, Exp is a more accurate metric for effort grinding
That's not really as good as you think as experience isn't universal. You'll get more of it in different areas and you'll need more of it early than later
@@alexisdipoalo9443 it makes a much bigger difference though. 2 Pokemon at the same level but with different growth rates means one needed more EXP than the other but the current system weighs them the same. So a slower growth rate Pokemon finishing the game at the same time as a faster growth rate Pokemon should get rated higher as they did have a harder time getting levels and overcoming it.
That’s a great idea!
jynx kissing and pounding brock's rock snake into submission sounds like some kind of horror story
This vid has a banger thumbnail!
Magmar usually struggles to stand out, but it has its perks here with the other fire types being nerfed this gen. Its actually solid, just why use ugly fire duck when you have so many fire types in later gens.
Magmar is actually top tier in Pokemon Crystal speedruns as well, it beats the game the fastest because it has a busted moveset from the start. That uses items, but its still good probably without.
If this were gen 2, I think Electabuzz would do very well, especially with it's coverage, but in gen 1, I think Jynx takes it
When it comes to competitive, Jynx is at the top for its amazing typing and access to sleep. Electabuzz follows with solid coverage to match its Electric-type moves. Then, after many tiers of better Fire-types, there’s Magmar. I’m expecting the in-game learnsets of these Pokemon and Yellow’s particular difficulty curve to be what shakes up these Pokémon’s performance compared to competitive, but Psychic is super hard for many Pokemon to deal with.
even in gen 3 jynx is quite good
What's crazy about this is that you could have made this 3 separate videos to pan out December more and nobody would have minded, but you made it one big video. Love your dedication to good content.
I have a confession:
I always watch Scott on 1.25x speed (1.5x if I'm in a hurry) so anytime catch him live talking normally, I pretend he's had a bit too much to drink.
I'm 1.5 always person, haha! And I agree, it does feel almost drunk. Honestly, if people talk a little too slow for my likes, I feel no issue with upping the speed.
Lol I feel you on that. I watch everything in 2x speed
@ChickenTeller i have a plugin allowing me to sit comfortably on 2.5
Ah man, I've played waaaaaaaaayyy too much Kingdom Hearts. Anytime I see 1.5 or 2.5, I immediately think of the the I.5 and II.5 Re:MIX collections. XD
That is a lot better than just constantly complaining about their talk speed. Especially since he used to talk faster, but he strained himself and now has to take it easy.
I honestly believe jynx was done a bit dirty in this. I really think the training time in that early game is unnecessarily slow and it’d be way better off taking some more Brock inconsistency to save a TON of time.
Love how this is about the Punch Trio and yet two of them don't even wind up using the punches because of when they get them from level up. So silly. Electibuzz and Jynx both get access to Thunderbolt and Icebeam so it doesn't even matter. Also can we just talk about Lovely Kiss just being the second best sleep move in the game and just abusing the hell out of it.
I feel like there is never an end to all of the weird interactions with Bide.
Glad to see another fire type do well.
76 out of 151 ranked? Hard to believe that we’re halfway through this series! Excited to see how the starters do with optimized play
Going Jynx high speed & special with psychic/ice coverage is really good in Gen 1 playthroughs
Honestly the Jynx Brock strat is something I really love about Gen 1. It's weird quirks make things like these possible.
Scott knows us so well. I was thinking Magmar needed another play through and he did it. I’ve loved the addition of the charts and graphs he’s using now. It’s going to be great when we start having playthroughs that require evolution and seeing how they compare to all species.
I think it would be more interesting if he evolved when he needed to, like when he needs to grind up he can make the decision to grind or evolve. See how far each evolution can go. Will obviously be tricky for butterfree, metapod and magikarp
@@machinat3636 I think he’s definitely going to optimize it to find out when he needs to use evolution stones or what level is best pending if he needs to learn specific moves. I doubt he’s just evolving as soon as he can 100% of the time.
This was a really fun threeway vs video! Very glad to see Electabuzz vs Magmar get a remake in an inventive way :D
What's interesting is the first games were never created with the intention of using some pokemon that early because in a regular playthrough you would never be able to get them. With Brock being such a huge road block for a lot of late game pokemon, Ive always wondered what these playthroughs might look like with level up learn move pools from other games were game freak took into consideration that peoole might import low level pokemon so they gave them a back log of level up moves because it was now possible to breed, etc.
For sure. I mean the other thing would be to just flatten the exp curve for every pokemon- But that just would probably turn the game into best stat total on top. With maybe some variance for stat distribution.
@@davidestabrooks211 the level curves are fine, I just see them species quirks, the move pools are where I feel the biggest problem. I mean you have some pkmn like Magikarp where part of their gimmick IS the limited move pool but in Gen 1 a lot of the limited move pools has more to do WHEN a pokemon is attainable and you can tell the different species aren't yet completely thought out.
@@SirSeabass I get what you are saying . would that mean instead seeing something liked to actually felt like each of the moves set got the same love in terms of moves- Like I get the joke about spells in a lost of old RPGS having
hmm, I think this would also be a fun set to do in crystal, considering how well the baby forms did.
magmar was by default the best of the 3 in the elemental punch challenge it was the only one that actually used its elemental punch.
What I appreciate the most about this series, other than the amazing software and humor, is learning how awesome some pokemon that I never used actually are. I have had a lot of fun replaying with different pokemon. Thank you
You could have named this "The Elemental Punchout"
Lately I've been feeling like rock tunnel is such a neat little litmus test, such a fun range of enemies.
Anyways, im probably gonna comment in less detail with how scott isnt reading so many comments being busy with the dailys, i may just comment the word Algo...
You forgot to put Blane battle music for Magmar fight :) You know there will always be assholes around to point out those little mistakes
ranking 76/151 means you’re officially halfway done! can’t wait to see the second half
Did not expect that result to be honest! I actually like Magmar and Electabuzz a lot because they have unusually good coverage for their types (something Electabuzz admittedly gets more of in Gen2, but still gives it an edge here, because Psychic is Psychic). Also, Electabuzz looks REALLY cool to me in a goofy way. I love those Popeye the sailor arms.
Jynx: "I'm still the MVP rental in Pokemon Stadium."
Jynx kissing you is weird enough, but the thought of it _licking_ something is... on another level.
Scott... Scott... I say this with utmost sincerity as a huge fan of your videos.
This is too much. I can't spend an hour every day watching your videos over December! I'm losing so much time and productivity from being addicted to these videos! Please send help.
waiting for a Magmar re-run, but didn't expect a 3-way duel with the other special attacking humanoids. Super pumped to watch this
Okay, you mentioned that Lickitung is freaky, and thank you for justifying my fear of this thing. I remember I was always terrified of it as a really little kid, because in Stadium, when it was sent out, its big ol' tongue would just lick the screen like it was trying to get you. Sushi go round was fun though.
Oh I love this video already!^-^ Magmar, Electabuzz and especially Jynx are in my top 5 beloved gen1 Pokemon. Right next to Flareon and Articuno. I bet all in on Jynx :>
Erica probably felt robbed in that initial Electabuzz fight.
And Rival 5 😂
I’ve ran magmar a bunch in yellow and I have to say it felt pretty good. Before I watch the whole video I feel it’s going to really surprise everyone. I feel it may be even better than jinx due to how frail it is. Let’s see if I’m right
Alright let's see how long I can keep up with the daily videos until I hopelessly fall behind and catch up in February 😅
"I'm automatically attracted to beautiful. I just start kissing them. It's like a magnet. Just kiss."
- Jynx in the post-race press conference
I think Electabuzz and Magmar would have an interesting competition in GSC
Daily December? Scott you mad man! (Totally gonna enjoy it though)
Wait... 1 video EVERY day?! DUDE....
Dont burn yourself out...
13:34 Not even Ice Punch. Please give Confusion to the poor dude. It's supposed to be a Psychic type.
He didn't mention the fact that he is now halfway done through the tier list
Given how good Jynx did, I'm curious how a backported Mr. Rime would do in gen 1
This was amazing, nice to see some love go to the punch trio. Hoping we get to see them again in FRLG
Fun fact, Jynx is actually a parody of ganguro fashion
I somehow knew you would do another Magmar run, watching until the end always pays off on your channel! ❤
Just after you finished the baby series and another great vs. video it's time for daily December! Thanks for all the great content! Wife and I just had our second kiddo, so taking a bit of time off work. These uploads are just what my sleep deprived self needs to keep me going all December long!
I'm thrilled for Daily December :)
I'm glad that Mrs. Popo did so well.
Jynx's back sprite... 😬
I predicted magmar to win but ended up rooting for Jynx if icy wind existed in gen 1 it would have shredded, great video.
So my prediction is going to have to be Jynx. Having a 75% accurate sleeping move just sounds so very broken in Gen 1, and Ice and Psychic are two of the strongest special typings in the game.
That said, I think Magmar starting with Ember will give it an early lead, as it won't have to train as much for Brock since it'll do pretty good damage against his Rock types.
I would like to see a series of what if moves like what if Krabby had Dig in yellow.
Somewhat surprising outcome honestly, though its a shame the punches didn't get much use. Honestly it would be cool to see a for fun run of the game implementing both egg moves, as well as the punches at the beginning. Then we could actually see which puncher sits at peak performance, and have an actual punch out. If egg moves were involved it could give the loser a bit of an edge.
11:00 Mr Mime says hold my beer
“Let’s go over what makes it a pokemon”
Well, for one, it can shoot fire from its mouth and punch you with a flaming fist.
And this one can blow up your brain with literal psychic powers.
But go on
JYNX MENTIONED
Jynx always gave me the heebie jeebies. If I encountered that thing in a dark room, I would actually piss myself haha
The nightmare fuel trio 🤣🤣🤣
Magmar did incredible. Best Fire-type for sure, access to Psychic really helps it out. Great runs. Surprised Jynx didn't lose too much time from the early game and it was still highly competitive. Electabuzz was pretty surprising too---Psychic access really helps out tons compared to like, Jolteon or something.
For some reason when scott said "Brock leads with Geodude" my brain went: "Broccoli Geodude"
I think Swift may actually be able to Gen I miss. I saw Swift miss before in the Japanese Pokemon Stadium (which I think has identical mechanics to the original Red/Green, including Blizzard's 30% freeze chance). I don't know if it's one of the things they changed for Red/Blue/Yellow, but I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't.
Hey Scott, do you eventually seeing yourself redoing these mons but using tradeback movesets? That way they can all start with elemental punches and amazing coverage options right from the start? Would be interesting to see how that would impact their times
If jynx would have a better starting move it should be confusion, not ice punch. Ice punch is just too strong, confusion with 50 BP is more reasonable.
However, it took gamefreak untill gen 7 (but only in the let's go games), to finally give jynx confusion via level up (or psychic for that matter, but TMs exist at least). Meanwhile smoochum gets confusion and psychic via lvl up starting with it's debut in gen 2.
Every last one of those Pokémon have the potential of being walled. Jynx at Brock possibly Misty. Electabuzz with ground Pokémon because I highly doubt that it one shots with psychic. Magmar with Misty, Lorelei, and Gyarados
When you mention running evolutionary lines, have you put any thought into delaying evolution to learn moves faster? Because I have; most notably, Squirtle learns Bite at level 22, but Wartortle doesnt learn it till... 24 I think? But if Squirtle learns it and then evolves, then it can beat Misty at level 22; where as a Level 23 Wartortle without Bite will have trouble beating Misty. Unless you just use Mega Punch or something I guess, I don't know, I don't use TMs or do solo runs... Might be relevant in FR/LG where Bite is Dark type though.
What a fun challenge to watch anytime! Scott, you're an artist, in the edition of your videos, in the upgraded performances of your contestants and in your way of beating pokemon repeatedly with different pokemon but never in a boring way, totally in a fun and creative way! I am your fan since your began your career Scott, I felt I was right about you, you are hard-working, very dedicated... You're gonna an outstanding father and husband, I 'm sure! Man, The Canadian are very well represented by you, Scott! Warm and nice person! Congratulations for all your work so far, as always I loved your challenge! By the way, I like Jynx the most out of the 3, ever since I saw Jynx in the anime I have always liked it! You did an amazing job with all the three, I'm so proud of these competitors, very good worked by you! I wish you a wonderful week Scott! May God bless you, your family and your work! Congratulations for your wedding by the way, I think I hadn't said that yet! Sorry for that! I can't wait to keep on watching your challenges! Thank you for all of them!
Srry. I’m bringing this up. But magmar’s backsprite reminds me of a certain character from little Nicky (a low key Adam Sandler movie that absolutely slaps). Anyway, if you’ve seen that movie you prolly know who Im taking abt lol
Glad you noted how beastly Ninetales is at the end. Fire type really isn't that terrible in and of itself, even in early gens, but most fire types are held back by being split attackers with rather shallow movepools in RBY. Being a middling type with a harsh start, a harsh finish and No Flamethrower TM makes for a disheatening situation, despite the strengths. Ninetales and Flareon though, this is the point at which they have the best stats they ever will have.
Despite my fire type apologism, I thought Magmar would likely be B rank too. Also I expected more Confuse Ray strats to wreck problem pokemon. It's almost as good as Sing in a way for hazing out a pokemon, and you love your Sleep strats. But it's less reliable for the long beatdowns and you very clearly didn't need it. Impressive, really.
@ScottsThoughtsPokemon Sorry i know this comment isnt relavent here.
But have you put any thought into what future moves back ported Pokémon get?
In a nutshell I feel like back ported Pokémon should only recieve future moves if they are the only Pokémon of the generation they are introduced in to get that move in their level up moveset, regardless if a few older polemon get it, or if later it become more prevalent. IE Heracross should get Megahorn because no other gen 2 polemon get it despite Nidoking also learning it. This is a key part to the Pokemon as its inteoduced.
Meanwhile Spiritomb shouldn't get Astonish because it was widly distributed in gen 3, a whole gen before its intoduction.
Id love to hear Scott's thoughts.
Know it, Jynx is awesome. But you sould account for Fireblast, and Blizzard more. Its your comfort Game anyway, so why not allways making a Powermove Run extra?
I allways relie on Fireblast, and never regretted it. Move its just consistent enough to be good.
Hey Scott, so whilst playing my charizard run I wanted to see what I could do to not die really fast at Gyarados. So what I did was after Celodon and buying vitamins for the special stats, then when I had to go to pokemon tower, I fought every ghastly trainer and added at least 20 wild ghastly. That increased my special a decent amount. Giving charizard the health to be a three hit to Gyarados's hydro pump. I used three rare candies right after Giovanni and then the rest before Lance. It made charizard beat Lance first try.
Moveset
Flamethrower
Bodyslam
Earthquake
Rest
I bet Magmar could've beat Misty at level 23. Outspeed by 1 and I'm sure BS would do a little over half. BUT then again if the AI got really lucky and just hit bubblebeam that prob would 2 shot Magmar if BS doesn't get the 2 hit but with Magmars attack stat I would say it'd be a fair bet that it would still win . Guess we'll have to see what Scott does for the optimized run!
I like Magmar the most out of these 3. I think it's design is just way cooler than the others. In general I tend to like fire type designs more so I'm a little biased lol.
My predictions going into this was Jynx would win easily and Electabuzz and magmar would be decent but overall not great, glad to see i was wrong. Magmar is great and it really shone in its playthrough. Although it lost the first runs it won after some TLC. Excited for daily December keep it up!
I think that's good that double-team tm is banned, but I feel like banning it and minimize completely is unfair for pokemon that learn it "naturally". Additionally, allowing it for some pokemon during Giovanni fight damages the consistency of your rules so I think it would be better for the series if it wasn't an "exception", but just allowed with mimic.
Setting it up and praying costs you time anyway so there might be better strategies. It's also not bad that there exist moves that are overpowered. In my opinion it just makes pokemon who learn them special in those games.
Dude, Jynx is the only one that fights on the same tier as Mewtwo in Gen 1 (thanks to lovely kiss--it's basically sleep powder, ice and psychic). You could've used it a bit more--it's not sing with its horrible accuracy. I fully expected lovely kiss (which she gets at the start) to carry (since the format is that we can reset as many times as we want, she just needs decent luck and won't really get stuck anywhere, except if she is outsped and one-shot, theoretically at least)
Fire types and Electric types are interesting because both are using confined to their STAB and Normal type moves. The difference is Fire has Flamethrower as a late learnable move which is nice in a mono type team run, but hurts compared to most other types that have a TM to learn their most consistent attack. Electric types do get Thunderbolt as a Gym TM but then they have almost no answer to the many Rock/Ground Pokemon. Those characteristics make Electric still suffer for Monotype team runs and solo challenges. Ice would make a better monotype team because there are more mid-level moves but the Pokemon are so far between and late game that it's not a viable playthrough, but the mid game Ice Beam helps all of the Ice type Pokemon.
Hmm... Are you predicting this video will get recommended to a lot of new viewers? I'm noticing a lot more detailed mechanical explanations than usual. A lot of the things you usually make drop without detai. Not criticizing, just furious.
Man, Magmar got robbed. Sure, it won the contest, but imagine if your victory was practically a blooper reel... It could have probably clawed ahead a few spots in the tier, at the very least
Wait a second, a post-oak run? You're really hiding it lol
Just wanted to hop in and say thanks for the content you produce! Always great to watch your videos
For the Champion, playing with Electabuzz - would using Mimic to learn Earthquake from the Sandslash be a good move? Why or why not?
If they have their elemental punches at the start, they would be easy S tiers. Especially Magmar with Thunder Punch and Electabuzz with Ice Punch from Gen 2.
1:18:47-1:18:56: Psychic does not have a guaranteed one-hit at level 88. Its chance to knock-out doesn't actually improve until Electabuzz gets to level 82.
Me confuuz...
Why didn't they give Jynx Confusion as a starting move...
There should be more moves so each pokemon starts with at least a stab(for it's primary type if possible).
Jynx's results are nuts. Rather than starting with Ice Punch though it'd be more appropriate for it to start with Confusion and get Psybeam via level up at level 25.
So this is the first DD vid? I'm watching it, like, fourth, and the next one I watch will probably be today's Legendary Beast Showdown :).
Jynx in a three way with magmar and electabuzz........yeah my brain went places it's not supposed to go. Thanks for that! xD
When watching this video I started getting a strong sense of deja vu. It took until Scott referenced his former playthrough for me to realize he did, in fact, run Magmar v Electabuzz
Perhaps I am missing something, but should the Jynx not have had more resets on its second run because of the intentional black-out training before Brock? Even if it’s intentional, should those not count for resets?
Just for fun, I would like the Grubbin line to be backported to Pokémon Yellow because there is either the Joltik line or the Grubbin line, and the Grubbin line is known for infamously being slow.
55mins for a first playthrough with a lengthy BrockSplit is *almost* identical to Kadabra? interesting....
Another nice video, however I was distracted by how many times you use the phrase "that being said". To anyone else watching, I am sorry for bringing this to your attention, but once you start thinking about it, it's hard not to hear it xD
I would be interesting to see a run where all these 3 start with their respective punches. Then we could do the title of this video a little more justice. It would not help Electabuzz against brock much, but from then on it could make up some ground.
Idea: backport mienshao to yellow. Super high base speed and karate chop for guaranteed crits would thay make a good fighting type in gen 1?
Jynx is about to smash this game with its typing and stats
that starting moveset tho 😬
Gen 1 and 2 just had the absolute worst movesets for pokémon for level-up.
Like holy moly.
Yet by games end on this run you barely even gave the 3 Pokmon the Punch moves but Jinx still has crap for Physical defense.
Jynx being in game trade only is just a western thing. I believe in Pokemon Green you can catch her in Seafoam Islands.
i know you're super busy, but i'm only 25 minutes in and already can't wait for the firered/leafgreen version.
Can't wait for Gen 2 and Gen 3 of the Elemental Punch Mon, also Jynx needs a new evolution in Gen 10 please.
Dang, I was really expecting Jinx to pull out the win, but Brock was too much of a barrier in the end
The Elemental Punch Showdown, now with 66% less Elemental Punches!
