That's not really as good as you think as experience isn't universal. You'll get more of it in different areas and you'll need more of it early than later
@@alexisdipoalo9443 it makes a much bigger difference though. 2 Pokemon at the same level but with different growth rates means one needed more EXP than the other but the current system weighs them the same. So a slower growth rate Pokemon finishing the game at the same time as a faster growth rate Pokemon should get rated higher as they did have a harder time getting levels and overcoming it.
What's crazy about this is that you could have made this 3 separate videos to pan out December more and nobody would have minded, but you made it one big video. Love your dedication to good content.
I have a confession: I always watch Scott on 1.25x speed (1.5x if I'm in a hurry) so anytime catch him live talking normally, I pretend he's had a bit too much to drink.
I'm 1.5 always person, haha! And I agree, it does feel almost drunk. Honestly, if people talk a little too slow for my likes, I feel no issue with upping the speed.
Ah man, I've played waaaaaaaaayyy too much Kingdom Hearts. Anytime I see 1.5 or 2.5, I immediately think of the the I.5 and II.5 Re:MIX collections. XD
That is a lot better than just constantly complaining about their talk speed. Especially since he used to talk faster, but he strained himself and now has to take it easy.
When it comes to competitive, Jynx is at the top for its amazing typing and access to sleep. Electabuzz follows with solid coverage to match its Electric-type moves. Then, after many tiers of better Fire-types, there’s Magmar. I’m expecting the in-game learnsets of these Pokemon and Yellow’s particular difficulty curve to be what shakes up these Pokémon’s performance compared to competitive, but Psychic is super hard for many Pokemon to deal with.
Scott knows us so well. I was thinking Magmar needed another play through and he did it. I’ve loved the addition of the charts and graphs he’s using now. It’s going to be great when we start having playthroughs that require evolution and seeing how they compare to all species.
I think it would be more interesting if he evolved when he needed to, like when he needs to grind up he can make the decision to grind or evolve. See how far each evolution can go. Will obviously be tricky for butterfree, metapod and magikarp
@@machinat3636 I think he’s definitely going to optimize it to find out when he needs to use evolution stones or what level is best pending if he needs to learn specific moves. I doubt he’s just evolving as soon as he can 100% of the time.
Love how this is about the Punch Trio and yet two of them don't even wind up using the punches because of when they get them from level up. So silly. Electibuzz and Jynx both get access to Thunderbolt and Icebeam so it doesn't even matter. Also can we just talk about Lovely Kiss just being the second best sleep move in the game and just abusing the hell out of it.
What I appreciate the most about this series, other than the amazing software and humor, is learning how awesome some pokemon that I never used actually are. I have had a lot of fun replaying with different pokemon. Thank you
I honestly believe jynx was done a bit dirty in this. I really think the training time in that early game is unnecessarily slow and it’d be way better off taking some more Brock inconsistency to save a TON of time.
What's interesting is the first games were never created with the intention of using some pokemon that early because in a regular playthrough you would never be able to get them. With Brock being such a huge road block for a lot of late game pokemon, Ive always wondered what these playthroughs might look like with level up learn move pools from other games were game freak took into consideration that peoole might import low level pokemon so they gave them a back log of level up moves because it was now possible to breed, etc.
For sure. I mean the other thing would be to just flatten the exp curve for every pokemon- But that just would probably turn the game into best stat total on top. With maybe some variance for stat distribution.
@@davidestabrooks211 the level curves are fine, I just see them species quirks, the move pools are where I feel the biggest problem. I mean you have some pkmn like Magikarp where part of their gimmick IS the limited move pool but in Gen 1 a lot of the limited move pools has more to do WHEN a pokemon is attainable and you can tell the different species aren't yet completely thought out.
@@SirSeabass I get what you are saying . would that mean instead seeing something liked to actually felt like each of the moves set got the same love in terms of moves- Like I get the joke about spells in a lost of old RPGS having

Did not expect that result to be honest! I actually like Magmar and Electabuzz a lot because they have unusually good coverage for their types (something Electabuzz admittedly gets more of in Gen2, but still gives it an edge here, because Psychic is Psychic). Also, Electabuzz looks REALLY cool to me in a goofy way. I love those Popeye the sailor arms.

Good lord. Scott made a video just for me? 3 of my all-time favorites slam packed into a super awesome versus video. Honestly, I'm on the moon! I'm sure Jynx will take this home because it's very good. So are the other 2, though, but I really want Magmar to TAKE THIS HOME!!! Dude, electabuzz is gonna get destroyed. Quick attack and leer? I cry. Great. Jynx starts with pound. Perfect. I cry twice. At least it feels a little more even. It's gonna be a riveting one
6:31 I think Magmar in Blue makes a lot of sense. I play Blue as a child and aways chose Squirtle. Since I also don't have access to Growlithe, I didn't have much option in Fire types and Magmar became my standard and favorite Fire pk. Vulpix? Look to cute and fragile. Flareon? C'mon, I playing Blue, if I allowed to chose types of curse I chose Vaporeon. Moltres? Legendarys are overpowered and came in high level, seems cheating. Anyway, glad to see a Magmar playthrough, love this thing. You have a great content, makes me happy.
Very interesting. So Jynx won Round 1 but Magmar wins Round 2. I admit, I was expecting Jynx to take both Rounds if only because of its typing and moveset toward the lategame. As always, excellent video, Scott and Team!
When watching this video I started getting a strong sense of deja vu. It took until Scott referenced his former playthrough for me to realize he did, in fact, run Magmar v Electabuzz
Hey Scott, thank you as always for your genuinely awesome content. Also just wanted to say I hope you're well and all, and if you ever need a breather please take it easy on yourself. It could be just me but it feels like in your recent videos you sound exhausted perhaps. Anyway thank you, one of my absolute favorite youtubers
My predictions going into this was Jynx would win easily and Electabuzz and magmar would be decent but overall not great, glad to see i was wrong. Magmar is great and it really shone in its playthrough. Although it lost the first runs it won after some TLC. Excited for daily December keep it up!
you often say that you feel bad repeating the same information every video, like the damage rounding threshold... But you know what? Even though I literaly grew with the older pokemon games I still forget the damage formula and how some of the thing used to work. So I AM grateful to hear it whenever you feel like it needs to be said. I truly am. Recent games works so differently than before and it's kinda scary how it makes me forget the basics. Maybe I'm getting too old? Too jaded? Either way, thanks. I enjoy your videos.
Awesome vid, cannot wait to see the conclusion, weirdly enough the least popular among the three, jynx, might win. With how much yellow hates electric types i don't see electabuzz taking the second place Edit 1: Okay i didn't know jynx had lower stat total, magmar is looking better now Edit 2: Jynx actually won in the first runs i kinda called it i guess. Edit 3: In the end they were neck to neck. Such an excelent video great work Scott.
I’m excited for this race and Scott’s Daily December! My prediction is Magmar toasts Electabuzz and Jynx primarily due to a special starting move and a great moveset. Jynx is next thanks to stab psychic and ice typing. Electabuzz puts up the best electric time since it gets psychic for Giovanni’s team but still comes in last sadly. Pulling for Electabuzz though even though I don’t feel great about its chances.
So fun fact: in the Pokemon index for gen 1, there is a cut yeti pokemon that appears to be intended to be the third member of the Electabuzz Magmar trio, as it is directly in between them in the index. One interesting thing about gen 1, particularly when looking at the cut pokemon, is how many fire, electric, and ice/water trios there are . Eeveelutions, the birds, Rapidash and Seaking were originally three stage families with an electric tiger pokemon, similarly Pikachu and Vulpix appear to be trio with a fish pokemon. Fire lightning ice is a classic JRPG trio that doesn't work in Pokemon, which is why I think it kind of disappeared after gen 2's babies and legendary dogs.
“Let’s go over what makes it a pokemon” Well, for one, it can shoot fire from its mouth and punch you with a flaming fist. And this one can blow up your brain with literal psychic powers. But go on
Glad you noted how beastly Ninetales is at the end. Fire type really isn't that terrible in and of itself, even in early gens, but most fire types are held back by being split attackers with rather shallow movepools in RBY. Being a middling type with a harsh start, a harsh finish and No Flamethrower TM makes for a disheatening situation, despite the strengths. Ninetales and Flareon though, this is the point at which they have the best stats they ever will have. Despite my fire type apologism, I thought Magmar would likely be B rank too. Also I expected more Confuse Ray strats to wreck problem pokemon. It's almost as good as Sing in a way for hazing out a pokemon, and you love your Sleep strats. But it's less reliable for the long beatdowns and you very clearly didn't need it. Impressive, really.
What a fun challenge to watch anytime! Scott, you're an artist, in the edition of your videos, in the upgraded performances of your contestants and in your way of beating pokemon repeatedly with different pokemon but never in a boring way, totally in a fun and creative way! I am your fan since your began your career Scott, I felt I was right about you, you are hard-working, very dedicated... You're gonna an outstanding father and husband, I 'm sure! Man, The Canadian are very well represented by you, Scott! Warm and nice person! Congratulations for all your work so far, as always I loved your challenge! By the way, I like Jynx the most out of the 3, ever since I saw Jynx in the anime I have always liked it! You did an amazing job with all the three, I'm so proud of these competitors, very good worked by you! I wish you a wonderful week Scott! May God bless you, your family and your work! Congratulations for your wedding by the way, I think I hadn't said that yet! Sorry for that! I can't wait to keep on watching your challenges! Thank you for all of them!
Hot take. Pokemon asymmetrically affected by monotype gym leaders shouldn't be given exceptions. If you don't have a way to overcome Giovanni eq it should affect your overall time. Even if it skews an entire type of mons. Brock does the same thing by gate keeping mons without access to special moves in their early learnset
IMO not really a hot take. The mimic double team strategy didn’t arise historically to help these mons, that’s just the effect it has now. I’ll eventually remove it and run all mons that used it again to see how both approaches compare. For now it stays though.
Hey Scott, so whilst playing my charizard run I wanted to see what I could do to not die really fast at Gyarados. So what I did was after Celodon and buying vitamins for the special stats, then when I had to go to pokemon tower, I fought every ghastly trainer and added at least 20 wild ghastly. That increased my special a decent amount. Giving charizard the health to be a three hit to Gyarados's hydro pump. I used three rare candies right after Giovanni and then the rest before Lance. It made charizard beat Lance first try. Moveset Flamethrower Bodyslam Earthquake Rest
Magmar did incredible. Best Fire-type for sure, access to Psychic really helps it out. Great runs. Surprised Jynx didn't lose too much time from the early game and it was still highly competitive. Electabuzz was pretty surprising too---Psychic access really helps out tons compared to like, Jolteon or something.
Man your videos are great. The way you optimize your additional playthroughs to give the given Pokémon it’s best shot at a good time. With optimizations in mind, would you ever consider trying a series where you have a single level 100 Pokémon, best stats in DVs and IVs, a gauntlet where they have one shot to steamroll the elite 4 with no heals and no PP restores. Straight up brute force the whole league with no healing of any kind. That would be optimization to the extreme. Looking forward to the December series.
As someone who adores the Gen 1 Electric types (with Electabuzz itself becoming a recent favorite) and finds it very frustrating that this game is so unkind to them, it is so nice to see one do so well. Even if the winning strat relies on good crit luck on the Champion battle.
Honestly my nostalgia glasses always considered Electric to be a great type and honestly I think it more has to do with how absolutely amazing Thunderbolt is a a type coverage move and how many Pokemon can learn it .
@ScottsThoughtsPokemon Sorry i know this comment isnt relavent here. But have you put any thought into what future moves back ported Pokémon get? In a nutshell I feel like back ported Pokémon should only recieve future moves if they are the only Pokémon of the generation they are introduced in to get that move in their level up moveset, regardless if a few older polemon get it, or if later it become more prevalent. IE Heracross should get Megahorn because no other gen 2 polemon get it despite Nidoking also learning it. This is a key part to the Pokemon as its inteoduced. Meanwhile Spiritomb shouldn't get Astonish because it was widly distributed in gen 3, a whole gen before its intoduction. Id love to hear Scott's thoughts.
I’ve ran magmar a bunch in yellow and I have to say it felt pretty good. Before I watch the whole video I feel it’s going to really surprise everyone. I feel it may be even better than jinx due to how frail it is. Let’s see if I’m right
Scott... Scott... I say this with utmost sincerity as a huge fan of your videos. This is too much. I can't spend an hour every day watching your videos over December! I'm losing so much time and productivity from being addicted to these videos! Please send help.
Jynx is my initial favourite. She has a good sleep move, stab psychic & blizzard (or Ice Beam earlier in the playthrough where the extra pp can save time), and if I'm not mistaken starts off pretty good in the move pool department too with double slap being decent early. Electabuz and Magmar can get through most things with their moves and stats too, but won't have access to a second super high damaging move or a sleep option. They are better defensively and will do more with Body Slam, but 75 or 100 % accurate sleep moves are just so overpowered on Pokemon that aren't otherwise terrible.
Fire types and Electric types are interesting because both are using confined to their STAB and Normal type moves. The difference is Fire has Flamethrower as a late learnable move which is nice in a mono type team run, but hurts compared to most other types that have a TM to learn their most consistent attack. Electric types do get Thunderbolt as a Gym TM but then they have almost no answer to the many Rock/Ground Pokemon. Those characteristics make Electric still suffer for Monotype team runs and solo challenges. Ice would make a better monotype team because there are more mid-level moves but the Pokemon are so far between and late game that it's not a viable playthrough, but the mid game Ice Beam helps all of the Ice type Pokemon.
I can tell its been a long day for me. It took me until you said rock leader to realize this was not a crystal run. I even looked at all the yellow in the thumbnail.
I think Swift may actually be able to Gen I miss. I saw Swift miss before in the Japanese Pokemon Stadium (which I think has identical mechanics to the original Red/Green, including Blizzard's 30% freeze chance). I don't know if it's one of the things they changed for Red/Blue/Yellow, but I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't.
When you mention running evolutionary lines, have you put any thought into delaying evolution to learn moves faster? Because I have; most notably, Squirtle learns Bite at level 22, but Wartortle doesnt learn it till... 24 I think? But if Squirtle learns it and then evolves, then it can beat Misty at level 22; where as a Level 23 Wartortle without Bite will have trouble beating Misty. Unless you just use Mega Punch or something I guess, I don't know, I don't use TMs or do solo runs... Might be relevant in FR/LG where Bite is Dark type though.
1:39:00 the problem is you put much more time into the other 2 but your not just comparing those 3, you're comparing all 150. So Magmar gets shorted on his potential because "he beat jynx so good enough"
1:18:47-1:18:56: Psychic does not have a guaranteed one-hit at level 88. Its chance to knock-out doesn't actually improve until Electabuzz gets to level 82. Me confuuz...
Just for fun, I would like the Grubbin line to be backported to Pokémon Yellow because there is either the Joltik line or the Grubbin line, and the Grubbin line is known for infamously being slow.
So my prediction is going to have to be Jynx. Having a 75% accurate sleeping move just sounds so very broken in Gen 1, and Ice and Psychic are two of the strongest special typings in the game. That said, I think Magmar starting with Ember will give it an early lead, as it won't have to train as much for Brock since it'll do pretty good damage against his Rock types.
Somewhat surprising outcome honestly, though its a shame the punches didn't get much use. Honestly it would be cool to see a for fun run of the game implementing both egg moves, as well as the punches at the beginning. Then we could actually see which puncher sits at peak performance, and have an actual punch out. If egg moves were involved it could give the loser a bit of an edge.
Srry. I’m bringing this up. But magmar’s backsprite reminds me of a certain character from little Nicky (a low key Adam Sandler movie that absolutely slaps). Anyway, if you’ve seen that movie you prolly know who Im taking abt lol
I still think total EXP at finish would be a great way to show how much training a mon needed to finish the game
I just want to know where that bonk counter is at
I second this and have been thinking about it for a long time. Level depends on growth rate, Exp is a more accurate metric for effort grinding
Great theme after baby november!
Really looking forward to the Scott-vent-Calendar :D
Awesome vid, cannot wait to see the conclusion, weirdly enough the least popular among the three, jynx, might win. With how much yellow hates electric types i don't see electabuzz taking the second place
Edit 1: Okay i didn't know jynx had lower stat total, magmar is looking better now
Edit 2: Jynx actually won in the first runs i kinda called it i guess.
I think Electabuzz and Magmar would have an interesting competition in GSC
“Let’s go over what makes it a pokemon”
Well, for one, it can shoot fire from its mouth and punch you with a flaming fist.
And this one can blow up your brain with literal psychic powers.
But go on
On the first day of December Scott's Thoughts gave to me:
Those three weirdo mons punching
“Daily December”
You absolute legend.
For some reason when scott said "Brock leads with Geodude" my brain went: "Broccoli Geodude"
Erica probably felt robbed in that initial Electabuzz fight.
And Rival 5 😂
Our electric bill is too high, so we're using fire to keep the house warm and combat the ice outside.
Wait... 1 video EVERY day?! DUDE....
Dont burn yourself out...
I'm thrilled for Daily December :)
Moveset
Flamethrower
Bodyslam
Earthquake
Rest
Magmar did incredible. Best Fire-type for sure, access to Psychic really helps it out. Great runs. Surprised Jynx didn't lose too much time from the early game and it was still highly competitive. Electabuzz was pretty surprising too---Psychic access really helps out tons compared to like, Jolteon or something.
i know you're super busy, but i'm only 25 minutes in and already can't wait for the firered/leafgreen version.
I think it would be awesome to see how each of them would do if they each started with their relevant elemental punch!
That magmar run had me mildly stressed, I'm so happy it still got the fastest even with the setbacks
Jynx's back sprite... 😬
Really solid results across the board, the electabuzz results do make me want to see how Jolteon would do in a replay though.
ONE FULLY PRODUCED VIDEO EVERY DAY?!? MERRY EARLY XMAS TO ME!
Great science as usual, thank you.
I can tell its been a long day for me. It took me until you said rock leader to realize this was not a crystal run. I even looked at all the yellow in the thumbnail.
13:34 Not even Ice Punch. Please give Confusion to the poor dude. It's supposed to be a Psychic type.
Nice finish level for Electabuzz 2 :).
I would like to see a series of what if moves like what if Krabby had Dig in yellow.
Great way to start off Daily December!
Srry. I’m bringing this up. But magmar’s backsprite reminds me of a certain character from little Nicky (a low key Adam Sandler movie that absolutely slaps). Anyway, if you’ve seen that movie you prolly know who Im taking abt lol
