I opened this video and your comment was directly above a link to another video with Reese’s peanut butter cups as the thumbnail. Got a good laugh at that.
On the twelfth day of December, Scott's Thoughts gave to me: The Johto trio roaming Surge's 'Chu with a competent trainer Classy Cat v Pig Monkey! A moonstone evolution The "Rhydon of gen three" A Pure Power powerhouse Wattson's ace in Hoenn 'Phan v Ursaring! A tiny turtle's bubble The fire starter digging A garden lizard's leech seed And those three weirdo mons punching
What a great way to cap off crystal playthroughs for the year. Scott has really taught me how to enjoy crystal playthroughs, it really has a different set of challenges compared to gen1 and is a pretty cool journey at least with scotts editing and storytelling. Im sure the progression, rocket plotline, and Kanto section are pretty boring for scott but he makes the playthrough fun for us.
I think this really demonstrates the idea of overkill in these. 90 base special attack is still absolutely usable, and having higher defenses + being a water type I think is worth more.
@@somerandomperson2626 It was faster by less than 20s, that's literally the amount of time difference displaying Suicunes longer name text than entei plus him bumping into walls notmplaying perfectly. These videos aren't precise enough to show an exact "winner"
I think the reason Suicune gets BubbleBeam at L.11 is because it's the box art Pokemon. In Gold and Silver it had Water Gun at L.11. I think they gave it a better learnset for Crystal because it's part of the story and they wanted it to be stronger when you fight it, rather than to make up for its lower offensive stats (although interestingly in future generations its level-up moves are based on the Crystal learnset, they didn't revert back to the Gold/Silver one to put it back equal with Raikou and Entei).
Did you ever tell your friend they were right lol I love these small stories you tell 😂 It's part of why I love you and jrose so much. Just thr abillity to tell side stories to make it flow.
Always liked these guys, the fact that they actually ran around the map and you had to track them down blew my 9 year old mind. Also enjoyed the classic debates of what kind of animals they're supposed to be - particularly memorable was hearing them described as the "legendary gerbils".
Just for reference, (conversational Japanese speaker here who lived and worked in Japan, but native english speaker who enjoys studying languages) Raikou is meant to be pronounced Rah-ee-kō-ü with the first two and last two syllables frequently slurred together. Japanese frequently shortens or omits vowel sounds that aren't easily spoken quickly when the syllable combination is awkward. So it becomes Rai (like Tie) and Kou (like Whoa) where the "Oh" sound rounding into more of a shortened oo like root (as in 'rooting for'). All three Beasts use the same name across most languages although the official pronunciations in English seem to change depending who the director of the project was (Raikou has been pronounced both how you have done in this video, and how its pronounced in Japanese in English Pokémon media so you'd be correct either way, but your inferred pronunciation you had growing up would be incorrect. Other examples of inconsistent pronunciation in English Pokémon media include Rayquaza as Ray-Kwah-zah and Ray-Kway-zah and Arceus as Ahr-SEE-us and Ahr-KEE-us. In Japanese, Arceus uses the first pronunciation and Rayquaza is called Raykuuza).
Wow...I was NOT expecting Entei to win the final round! Outside of Jasmine, this generation is not kind to Fire types, but I suppose that Attack Stat is what helped it edge out in the end. As always, excellent job, Scott and Team!
I love seeing creators reinvest in themselves and the videomaking! Your content just keeps getting better!! Love the comparison videos and your style of commentary as well as attention to detail with these playthroughs!
A note on the type coverage from about 57 minutes in: A lot of discussion in the late 2000's occured about how important "Boltbeam" (Thunderbolt and Ice Beam) coverage was for attacking mons like Starmie.
Scott, First of all, thanks for these! You put in a lot of work. I think Suicune's performance illustrates a point you've made before--gen 2 doesn't need massive attack output, it needs staying power and move diversity. High atk and spa are overkill, as you pointed out with the baby mons. Suicune's coverage and defensive staying power gave it an edge at several important points
It's great to see them all land in the same tier and such a good tier too. This was an epic video to end off Gen2/Crystal with for the year. Stay awesome Scott.
Holy ****! I did not remember how Raikou looked like!" THAT'S WHY HE ALWAYS FELT OF! I played silver in 2001 (i'm old) and never had crystal. I mean ,its been 2 decades and I am more than used to seeing Raikou for what he is now, and also seeing way more Crystal gameplays than silver. But man, THATS what has been subconciously making something feel different. holyyyyyyy, i did not expect that today
I love the long videos don't ever feel bad about giving too much detail, I enjoy all the fine details and nuances throughout the runs. Keep it up, long time watcher, first time commentator!
Scott, Entei has the swagger + psych up combo. I think you can set up one (or two) swagger then copy the stats right away (basically a swords dance); this way you are not slowed by curse and can sweep.
If you're curious about pronunciation, the names of these three Pokemon is just the Japanese names transliterated (except for Suicune, which should have just been Suikun). Raikou is therefore pronounced like the words "rye" and "coal" together, without the "l" at the end. Other than Scott saying the "sui" of "Suicune" a little too fast, he pronounces the other two correctly.
I like Raikou myself. I too caught Raikou as a kid, but it’s with a Pokeball at full health! I was excited when that happened and I still remember it to this day.
Scott your daily content in December has been keeping me going this month. This match up is so hype, thank you for all the time and effort you've put into your videos
The spinning guy you spoke to in Violet city is named Earl. He is the teacher of the pokemon trainer school and is supposed to be foreign. Hes also a fun character in the adventures mange iirc.
This trio was a fun and surprising rivalry to see unfold! With regards to Suicune, I'm surprised that you didn't make use of Hidden Power in the final solo. Aurora Beam does fill a similar role to HP Ice and Bayleef isn't that scary, so I get why Ice isn't that good, but maybe Electric would be good? It would help against Chuck's Poliwrath and even Pryce's Water types (not that they're very threatening anyway). These were very well played and it was a fitting end to the Crystal series this year!
It's nice to see love for the legendary beasts, I find it often hard to have a chance to use them in-game since I never really get to catch them reliably until quite late due to how tedious it is. But they're very cool Pokémon
"I have a lot of respect for your time" LOVE YOU FOR THAT! To that, I love watching your videos. If they so happened to be 'long', I make time to watch. If I fall asleep, (which I often do. You have a great voice for that lol) I guess I'll have to watch it again. Which I do lol. 😊😊😊 Raikou is one of my favorites. Btws. ❤
What about a run where you make a “super” custom Pokémon and see how fast it can blaze through the game? Like you would choose its type, all moves, xp growth, ability, etc. I think it would be cool to see the most ultra-optimized run possible
1 HP/Def/SpAtt/SpD, enough speed to outpace the fastest threat, the other 400/500+ in Attack, Ghost-type to avoid the three priority moves. Use normal effective attacks to avoid the text you get for effective moves. Still 600 bst and becomes a game of clicking A to beat every mon as fast aa possible.
My favorite legendary trio! My husband actually put together some model kits of them recently for me, so they got to watch the video too from my desk. ;)
I think giving Entei hp rock would be an improvement. Although it doesn’t help with Clair, it’s quite good against Lance & Reds Charizard. Anyways great vid, love the content❤
awesome race and amazing finale! loved every second. And agree on the Raikou redesign, I loved the older one with the copper colored mane over the purple one
In 1998 I got into pokemon. Gyarados was my first favorite. In 2008 my buddy talked me into playing his silver version. With the roaming mechanics and artwork, I fell in love with suicune. It has remained my favorite since.
Outstanding video as always Scott! Keep up the great work! Some feedback on that (not in a negative way), there are two things that I personally dislike about the approach: first is TM Curse. I think it should be banned. It basically fixes all Pokemon at the end. Second is the rival, Pokemon that have weakness to grass have a disadvantage which gives a massive advantage to Pokemon that do not have a weakness to any of their Pokemon - say a normal pokemon or a psychic.
Yeah, I will never stop having mixed feelings about Return and how strong it is, but no matter how janky or repetitive the meta I still love watching single Pokemon runs.
Anime Pokedex be damned! The electric catdoggo's name is pronounced Rye-koh! The Katakana for its name are "ライコウ" which are "ra i ko u." I will die on this hill.
I was waiting for this, and it didn't disappoint. This being gen 2 I was expecting Suicune to win it all but Entei was the most reliable one after all. Fun fact, as a kid 90% of the time Entei was the one I would catch and use occasionally, I almost never found Raikou and at least in crystal I would usually have Suicune by that point, but I wouldn't always use it.
Wow Scott, I'm watching this clash just in the end of the year of 2024. By now it's just impressive how many Pokemon have got themselves better times than the legendary beasts. In fact, too many. But still these times are incredible. I don't know, maybe they could beat the game faster, even below 1:15. Maybe by today, you would be able to get outstanding times with these three beasts, ho-oh and Lugia. You've improved so, so much. Well, let's see how many more are able to crush Pokemon crystal. I can't wait to see.
I used Suicune in Stadium 2. It was really good for a general use water pokemon, but I didn't account for how damn tanky it is. Barely anything scratched it. I don't think it ever went down, especially with Leftovers.
so much work in these videos and not that „much“ recognition. i hope you can grow up to the other challenge runners next year like pchallenges, zwiggo, jrose and everyone else
I always learn something new every time I watch a video from Scott. For example, I thought all this time Zap Cannon was a Gen III move since the Regi trio (hope to see a versus of them one day) naturally learn it. After today, I now know it originated in Gen II, so thanks for that Scott, hope you keep up the good work, and as always, you're incredible. We'll see you in the next one.
The Regis are impossible to solo with in gen 3 or 4 - their only move at base level is Explosion so they have no way of winning a battle or leveling up on their own. So you'll end up having to wait until gen 5, which is...a long ways off
Enter has always been my favorite dog (I know they’re cats, I’ve always called them the dogs). I remember in Gen 4 when they released the event shiny dogs with new moves Entei got Sacred Fire, where Raikou got the mid coverage move Aura Sphere and Suicine got the underwhelming Air Slash. Kinda flipped the script on all the love Suicine got in Gen 2.
I'm really happy you're gonna be saying rye koo for this video. It's the correct pronunciation imo. Anyways. Entei has always been my favorite of these guys. I think they're all amazing, though. They're all pretty similar to each other, though, so I think it'll come down to learn/movesets. Suicine is probably gonna take this though 😎
So funny thing, around 57:00 you were talking about how electric+ice gives amazing coverage. This is actually a very common thing in older gen pokemon that stuck around for a long time, being known as quite good/important in a competitive pokemon. That thing is called BoltBeam (Thunderbolt and Ice Beam) because of the exact reasons you described. I think it was still a prominent part of competitive lingo until generation 5 where it started to die off.
IT's still a very good combination, because it can hit ANYTHING for at least neutral damage, if not super effective and ice is one of the best offensive types. It's just that there are other viable combinations that hit for either neutral or super against everything, so it's not the be all end all of move combinations.
Entei really should've gotten Earthquake and Rock Slide - he's essentially synonymous with eruptions, and what do eruptions often bring with them? Earthquakes and rock slides. Such missed potential, even to this day...sure, he did get Extreme Speed and Flare Blitz via Gen 4 movie event, and Sacred Fire (!!!) from Gen 6 move reminder, but that doesn't really increase his coverage, unfortunately.
Nice video, I really expected Suicune to take it just due to its moveset and good typing. I do think if you come back to it, Rain Dance might be worth trying out. At minimum it can help vs Chuck and if you can keep it until Red it might be the way to beat Snorlax.
i never understood why suicune got its own game cover and so much importance compared to the other two since its just 1/3 of a trio, that would be like zapdos being on the cover of yellow
Entei having a main role in the 3rd Pokémon movie means it received comparable importance to Suicune...I feel more sorry for Raikou who is definitely the least loved by GameFreak
I used the legendary beasts in SS, and extrasensory became my favorite move. It isn't the strongest, but it had good enough damage, so much PP, and a flinch chance. 😍
The memories, my first game was soul silver and i remember using a master ball on Raikou. It was one of my best pokemon, tho i hadn't caught Lugia due to using the master ball. But i was happy with it, Jolteon, Typhlosion, and the red Gyarados. But yea since that day i have always liked the legendary beasts especially Raikou!
I’ve been thinking this for awhile now. Move pools have been a HUGE difference in gen 2. When a poke has good coverage like Elekid it just makes its first run so intuitive and easy.
This was a stunner! All 3 did quite well, but I was expecting Raikou~=Suicune>Entei. I know it reduces the HP DV to 8, but is HP Ground worth considering on Suicune for Red's Pikachu? A Return/HP Ground/Rest/Curse set seems like it would be quite consistent.
I was surprised he didn't go for HP Rock for Entei, but I also don't know the DVs. HP Ice is just so good because you get to keep almost perfect stats.
@@rooislangwtf True! It was never legitimately threatened at any point when Scott was playing well. At least not to the point where the HP DV would matter.
Entei only really needed HP for the Lance battle, so Ice is usually better than Rock for that with the added benefit of ensuring Clair's Dragonair aren't an issue. You also get the Ice boost from Pryce. Ice is 15A/13D (15 HP) and Rock is 13A/12D (11 HP), so slight advantage there too.
Awesome the three legendary beasts are my favorite legendaries and they were oberlooked for a lomg time especially Raikou who is the coolest in my opinion
Fun fact: the three legendary beasts are all based on big cats. Entei is a Lion, Raikou is a Tiger, and Suicine is a Leopard according to Muneo Saitō, the artist who designed them.
I predict Suicune to easily win this. What an epic Pokemon. Crystal was my favourite game of all time, the nostalgia is endless. I still play it casually once in a while.
It's Rye-koh for the record. The "ou" in this case is also present in Ho-oh's name which in japanese is "Houou" but it's pronounced just like Ho-oh. It's just the way in Japanese to pronounce a long o. Most of the time when there's an ou at the end, it will be romanized to Raikō or Raikoh (like they did with Ho-oh) but the person who put it in the game just took the literal reading of the characters "Ra I Ko U." Which like...that definitely was never gonna confuse a bunch of North American players or anything, right?
It's also worth noting that that Japanese pronunciation varies very, very little -- basically if you see those characters, it will (almost -- there might be some exception I don't yet know) always pronounce the same.
Don’t feel bad about not knowing about Crystal lol, your friend was wrong about calling it a blue dog because they’re not dogs, they’re cats. Also I love that Staind song and always think of it when I hear the saying “It’s been a while.”
Your story about Raikou reminds me of my own situation with suicuine, I caught the other 2 (one of them using my masterball, so that was not an option). Fought suicuine a ton, getting it to 1hp with false swipe then relying on sleep, but it would always wake up and run. Eventually it stopped falling asleep (sleep moves just failed, could have been bad luck but it was beyond statistical probability), eventually I switched to paralysis, which would always remain but give me less turns to attempt a catch. Never did manage to catch it.
I caught the beasts relatively late in my original Gold playthrough and remember being especially disappointed by entei. I vividly remember the first time I ran into one of them roaming and it was Raikou, maybe the reason it's my favorite overall (though I really love using suicune in competitive)
It’s been awhile is an amazing song! Lol it’s been a while since I’ve heard it. I’m gonna go ruin other peoples days lol also this run was awesome I’m so happy it happened
I'm pretty sure the only times I ever used Entei and Raikou in battle were in Pokemon Colosseum. I'm almost certain I caught both of them at one time in Silver or Crystal, because I know all the strats and vaguely remember the frustration. It was godawful, fucking roaming legendaries. There's some absolutely cursed methods of obtaining Pokemon in the early generations, culminating in the psychopathic war criminal that designed the Honey Tree system. though, the person who decided how Feebas encounters should work belongs in prison as well. Suicune, tho, because it's so much easier to get in Crystal, I used it a LOT. I didn't realize it was a defensive Pokemon, though, lol. like, I wasn't looking at stats, for the most part. I just thought it was neat. Even in Colosseum I used Suicune more. Entei basically won because of higher physical attack, lol. that was just destiny, and neither Raikou nor Suicune could ever overcome that.
I got spoiled on the results because I just had to see what other people said about Scott's opinion on Staind before I forgot to check. That song is so good.
A little dissapointed with suicune but perhaps HP electric could be the final coverage that u need for it, was hoping u would have used it since u mentioned how gd the coverage of the 'boltbeam' combi is
First-run Entei's Rival4 "Nice" was the longest I've taken to find it. I was waiting for past the battle to see its unlowered stat (yeah, this video's playing off to the side...), and I frame-by-framed to see if there was something in the level-up screens, until finally looking at the opponents' stats, and resuming play verbally reconfirmed it's the Haunter.
The thumbnail art for these videos is always a treat
Really well done
I opened this video and your comment was directly above a link to another video with Reese’s peanut butter cups as the thumbnail. Got a good laugh at that.

Flareon syndrome but better stats and movepool means it's not a syndrome anymore.
@@JayHankEdLyon I like Flareon but that pokemon really doesn't have the physical bulk nor speed back it up it's viable.
Phys Atk >> Spc Atk in Gen 2 thanks almost solely to Return and Red’s Snorlax.
A said Snorlax that also knows Amnesia.
Entei has Flareon syndrome, but it manifests only in competitive because Johto is very weak.

Maybe by today, you would be able to get outstanding times with these three beasts, ho-oh and Lugia. You've improved so, so much. Well, let's see how many more are able to crush Pokemon crystal. I can't wait to see.
Raikou is just transliterated from its Japanese name, so the best English approximation I can think of is that it rhymes with “psycho”.
I used Suicune in Stadium 2. It was really good for a general use water pokemon, but I didn't account for how damn tanky it is. Barely anything scratched it. I don't think it ever went down, especially with Leftovers.
Awesome run! My favorite won! I won't spoil 🤫
And now “It’s been awhile” is stuck in my head 😂 I do that with songs too when phrases come up in normal conversations Lolol
so much work in these videos and not that „much“ recognition. i hope you can grow up to the other challenge runners next year like pchallenges, zwiggo, jrose and everyone else
I've been waiting for this for a looooooong ass time
Raikou and Suicune are my favs
I’ve been waiting for this video since the first vs video I saw on this channel
I always learn something new every time I watch a video from Scott. For example, I thought all this time Zap Cannon was a Gen III move since the Regi trio (hope to see a versus of them one day) naturally learn it. After today, I now know it originated in Gen II, so thanks for that Scott, hope you keep up the good work, and as always, you're incredible. We'll see you in the next one.
The Regis are impossible to solo with in gen 3 or 4 - their only move at base level is Explosion so they have no way of winning a battle or leveling up on their own. So you'll end up having to wait until gen 5, which is...a long ways off
@@crimsoncutz8430 There's Platinum I guess? Stomp?
@@crimsoncutz8430Sounds like a great April Fool's episode
@@crimsoncutz8430 This I did not know. thanks for the info!
You make baby pokemon look playable so it's funny getting through otherwise tough fights with bad RNG without any kind of deal
This upload made my day, thanks Scott!
Whoa whoa whoa, I wasn't ready to see a Magic card in a Scott video
I'm really happy you're gonna be saying rye koo for this video. It's the correct pronunciation imo. Anyways.
Entei has always been my favorite of these guys. I think they're all amazing, though. They're all pretty similar to each other, though, so I think it'll come down to learn/movesets. Suicine is probably gonna take this though 😎
Neither is correct. It's transliterated from the Japanese text which pretty clearly pronounces it as "rye koh".
@Duothimir good thing I'm American :D
As late Gen 8 OU has shown through Arctozolt, BoltBeam can still be very effective (though it had to be in Hail and have Low Kick)
So happy this video has happened now!! Worth the wait :)
i never understood why suicune got its own game cover and so much importance compared to the other two since its just 1/3 of a trio, that would be like zapdos being on the cover of yellow
They probably thought Celebi wasn't "cool" enough to warrant being on the cover and there were no other legendaries left outside the trio...
Spiky chicken deserves 3 game covers
Lore reasons with eusine id have to guess making it the easiest to mold a third game around
Entei having a main role in the 3rd Pokémon movie means it received comparable importance to Suicune...I feel more sorry for Raikou who is definitely the least loved by GameFreak
My favorite won!! Great games Scott
I haven't seen many youtubers do a run with the doggos this is going to be epic thanks again for the amazing content 👏
Thanks for all the recent uploads! I’m sorry you thought you were getting gaslit about Suicune existing 😢 Happy Holidays!
I used the legendary beasts in SS, and extrasensory became my favorite move. It isn't the strongest, but it had good enough damage, so much PP, and a flinch chance. 😍
The changing live over lay is my favorite part of every video! Also love pokemon but ya art is subjective!
Next Crystal video, can you beat pokemon Crystal as Nob? Haha! Love that artwork for him!
I’ve been thinking this for awhile now. Move pools have been a HUGE difference in gen 2. When a poke has good coverage like Elekid it just makes its first run so intuitive and easy.
I have NEVER heard it called RAY-koo 😂
This was a stunner! All 3 did quite well, but I was expecting Raikou~=Suicune>Entei. I know it reduces the HP DV to 8, but is HP Ground worth considering on Suicune for Red's Pikachu? A Return/HP Ground/Rest/Curse set seems like it would be quite consistent.
I was surprised he didn't go for HP Rock for Entei, but I also don't know the DVs. HP Ice is just so good because you get to keep almost perfect stats.
Suicune probably has enough bulk to give up some hp dvs
Yet so many people mistakenly call them dogs. Makes me cringe every time I see people call them dogs lol.
Entei does look like a big dog like a mastiff or something though.
thanks for the song recommendation, gonna add it to my playlist
Literally "thunder light", AKA lightning. It could also be a pun on the Japanese reading of Leigong, a Chinese thunder god.
@@Duothimir I think it comes from Rai (thunder) and kō (lord), but then again, only the designers truly know.
It's also worth noting that that Japanese pronunciation varies very, very little -- basically if you see those characters, it will (almost -- there might be some exception I don't yet know) always pronounce the same.
I dunno, it always made sense to me, lol.
Not sure how he got "Reiko" though, lmao
Please always play the national park music for the crystal play through. It's never played and it's like everyone's favorite track in this game.
My favorites are Violet/Olivine's theme and the foreboding Dark Cave, but National Park is good too 🙂
Don’t feel bad about not knowing about Crystal lol, your friend was wrong about calling it a blue dog because they’re not dogs, they’re cats.
2.2k great job Scott!
Ayyy, Scott fixed Raikou's pronunciation!
I constantly sing Staind songs to my wife; she is never impressed.
Very good recovery on Raikou's time!
What the??? It's been awhile is a fantastic song. What do you mean it's awful?
Now *_these_* are Legendary Pokemon! Always found them way more awesome than the Kanto Chickens.
