I really love this run because these two are still some of my favourites. A great result by Victreebel, knocking Gengar down is a great achievement. Wait until Gen 4 where you can run a physical Vileplume or Victreebel. I think this is my favourite run, can’t wait to thee them, Bellossom and Sunflora in Johto.
The speed and attack stat are great for victreebel especially for badge boosts. It’ll be bulky enough as is. And you’ll be out speeding and doing more with physical moves off less setup.
This is why I love these videos SO much. I’ve always loved these cute little plants but never in my life would I have imagined that they would do this well!!

Still, this will be the ONLY hurdle and you don't even need to wait to 22, due to the Water Gun TM.
I comment only to help you with the algorithm, but I take the opportunity to congratulate you because I've been following you since the beginning and the progress you've made is just incredible
Seeing this video made something in me click: Meowscarada has basically single target gen 1 razor leaf as its signature move. They are roughly the same base power considering crits in gen 1 are not exactly 2 times damage; At level 50 a 55 BP razor leaf is actually a 105 BP grass move who ignore boosts... Just like Flower trick. Btw, Meowscarada is heavily carried by fast Flower Trick and Knock off, both in singles and in doubles.
I really like what you've done with the screen. I'm learning to code right now and have grown an appreciation for what you do for the viewer. Thank you!
If Victrebell starts with Razor Leaf, it's gonna be one sided Edit: i just checked the movepolls, and both starts pretty well, but i think Victrebell is gonna win, thanks to the Razor Leaf+Sleep Powder combo. Vileplume has Petal Dance, so in the beggining is not gonna be really hard, but in a long run it's gonna struggle...
I really appreciate how much dedication you put into your videos and go behind the scenes. You are making real definitive results for these videos by comparison to other youtubers who are doing it more for theater and doing casual let's plays, basically. Your tier list feels super legitimate, to the point I don't think many could ever argue it. Hope you can keep growing, you deserve it. The amount of transparency in these videos is refreshing.
I really want to keep things transparent. I don't think my approach is perfect, some things I'd change if I started all over, but we're too far in and everything is "good enough". I'm hoping that at the end of the project I can look back and feel happy with the accuracy of my rankings. There will have to be tie-breakers.
SPOILER ALERT! So - judging by Victreebel's incredible time, I have one important question: Is Venusaur gonna beat its time? Better speed, better defense, same special, almost same atk, almost same movepool. Unfortunately, it's stuck with Vine Whip until lvl 30. And no Acid could slightly delay with early Bug Catchers.
Victreebel is better anyway and actually learns attacking Grass-type moves, I actually use one for my non-canon Yellow Version team and ain't even my official Kanto team.
Good grief Scott! Thanks for validating all my childhood beliefs about my Gen 1 teams! Victrebell was always my grass type if I chose Squirtle or Charmander in Blue and it was always such a beast but seeing the numbers behind it and what you did was awesome!
I reckon after you've done all pokemon in yellow you take the top 32 and do a speedrun vs. tournament with them. Would be good fun to see how they all compare now that you're better at the games. Great vid, keep it up!
That’s a fun idea. Maybe it’s a tournament where I have to do a single attempt only. So it’s all about finding the most consistent strategies that could be executed in let’s say a 1 hour time slot.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon Yeah! And it might go a long way to answer that "consistency vs potential" argument. To win something like that you have to be both consistent, but consistently faster than your opponent.
Both of these Pokémon are so slept on. I’ve used them in multiple play throughs and really enjoyed them. Especially for Vileplume in later gens when it’s movepool gets so much better.
Scott I just want to take a moment to thank you. You've very gradually become one of my favourite Pokemon game UA-camrs and I'm grateful for your content. All the success to you mate.
Sometimes when I don't have a lot of time I skip to the end of videos like these to see the results. But knowing how much you put into the runs I just waited until I had enough time to watch it all.
Scott, you're simply the best content creator by far when it comes to this Pokemon type content. Amazing work and very well explained gameplay. I am excited to see Weepinbell and see if it can actually dethrone Victreebel.
Thanks so much Rodrigo, I'm glad you're enjoying my videos! I'm excited to try Weepinbell too. I have high hopes for it, however, I'm not sure if they are as high as they were before I played Victreebel.
Venusaur is basically a worse Victreebel in terms of these playthoughs. Very similar learnsets and pretty similar stats (same special, Venusaur has more speed and defense but those don't really matter, Victreebel has slightly more attack which I guess helps a little bit). Big difference is that Victreebel starts with sleep powder and razor leaf whereas Venusaur has to wait for levels 55 and 30 for those moves.. Venusaur getting growth, which Victreebel doesn't have access to, at level 43 might make some of the late game a tiny bit quicker, but it won't offset the huge advantage Victreebel gets from having, such a powerful status move right from the start. I predict Venusaur will be around the bottom of the S tier. Still very fast in the grand scheme but not quite on Victreebel's level.
Thanks as always for the awesome content, Scott! I really appreciate all the effort put into the playthroughs and data collection/organisation. I swear it's the last time I'll suggest this, but a comparative playthrough of international versions and original ones would be great! Cheers, keep it up!
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon i see, that might be a pain given values and other things are written/stored in different parts of the code, ram or w/e(Iremember that's why you coudn't trade between original/international); would still be quite unique content; I don't think I've ever seen a side by side comparison in the style you do, Thanks as always for the entertainment and hard work!Cheers
Wow, seeing both of them speed through so fast! In previous casual playthroughs Victreebel always was a great member on my teams, but even beating out Gengar is a great feat! Also very much looking forward to the Tentacruel playthrough. And thank you (again) for putting so much effort into things like the overlay, the production quality of your vidoes is phenomenal!
I love your passion for these games and the Pokémon in them. I feel that way too, and it is so cool to see someone with a growing platform treat every video meticulously, yet you still make them fun. I go back-and-forth between what my top 2-3-4 Pokémon are, but Victreebel is always in that top tier discussion. I loved the grass type growing up playing RBY. I discovered Razor Leaf and how it always got a critical hit with Victreebel's speed. My only real complaint would be why it had to have a sub-type of poison. If it has to be that way, then Victreebel should have learned Sludge IMO. With STAB it would be a pretty effective move - not to mention alongside Victreebel's high Base Attack stat. Anyway, I love the videos and glad to be a supporter. Keep them coming! 🎉
Omg if this thing got sludge in gen1 it would have been so dominant. Slightly more damage that body slam and the ability to potentially skip that SS Anne trainer.
Wow the the UA-cam algorithm suggested this to me out of the blue and I decided to watched this. Brings back so much memories LOL. I still remember the first game I played was blue version, and I didn't know that you had to deliver a package to Prof Oak to get past the grumpy old man. So I was basically stuck in Pallet Town and Viridian City for a long time. So much so that my starter Squirtle evolved into a Blastoise by the time I eventually beat Misty.
I couldn’t figure out how to get through Viridian Forest and just thought the game ended there after you ran out of money and couldn’t catch anymore Pokémon. I restarted so many times just to get more money and catch Pokémon haha
I really like and have used both of these actually, I used Vileplume in my successful Emerald nuzlocke and used a shiny Victreebel in my Lets Go Eevee playthrough.
@Scott's Thoughts first time I caught it. :) I like it. Great job with this video. I 100% was super surprised by the results and also how poison types are so low yet the dual poison types (fully evolved) are near the top. Tentacruel is going to be very interesting.
I think it has been a while since I see a versus video. I miss these! Vileplume was my preferred one as a kid. It was simply because it was the cuter one. However, in recent years, I have grown to love Victreebel from my Pogo experience.
Been asking for this one for so long and I am stoked to hear who wins. Rooting for my boy Victreebel, but I wouldn't be surprised if it went either way. Edit: Well, I am glad to see my favorite become number 1! At least as of now.
Vileplume actually is my favourite pokemon or maybe it's oddish. As a kid I was obsessed with moves that restored hp and since the oddish line has absorb it became a pokemon I often had on my team. Its attacks weren't necessarily very strong, but thanks to being able to heal it could deal with a lot of trainers. One of the things that I can clearly remember from playing as a kid is that I once got lost in the seafoam islands. All my pokemon got knocked out by the wild pokemon, except for Vileplume who did its best to protect me and could withstand a lot more attacks thanks to being able to heal. Eventually Vileplume ran out of pp and after some struggles it also fainted. In the end it didn't matter that it lasted so much longer and it only meant that it took longer to get out of cave, but this memory has stuck with me and has helped keep it at the top as my favourite pokemon. Vileplume is often overshadowed by other grass types, even from the same generation, but it has some unique moves have allowed it to shine for me in competitive and in playthroughs that doesn't really matter anyway. Victreebel is a pokemon that I didn't really use in gen 1. I did have pokemon blue at some point, but bulbasaur has leech seed which made it my favourite starter and much better than bellsprout. I did use bellsprout in gen 2 since you get it earlier than oddish and I didn't like removing pokemon from my team as a kid, but oddish still got a lot of use in gen 2. I never got leaf stones in gen 2 as a kid, so I still didn't use victreebel in gen 2. Since Victreebel has better offensive stats I think it will have an advantage, but I hope that Vileplume will manage to catch up in later playthroughs.
Great vid! Always thought Victreebel was really strong in these games, regardless of ingame or competitive use. One of my favorites in this gen, glad to see it dethroning more conventionally strong mons like Gengar or Nidoking. Vileplume surprised me, I didn't expect it to keep pace so well with Victreebel. If only petal dance was just a bit stronger... As a game designer, I've sort of been inspired by runs like this to try and put together a set of balance changes that retain RBY's unique quirks and charms while giving certain mons a little power boost that they might need. Just a thought experiement at the end of the day, but still fun to compile using these videos as references from time to time. A run I'm very curious to see using your methods would be Poliwhirl. It might not seem conventionally strong, but it gets the moveset and speed stat of Poliwag with more power and bulk, without the fighting type hinderance that Poliwrath has holding it back (despite me personally preferring Poliwrath's typing). I'm not sure if it would dethrone anyone, but it might be able to hit A or possibly S tier (not as likely), especially since it's surprisingly potent even in competitive weirdly enough. Could be wrong, the only place I could see it struggling is midgame before it gets Amnesia at 41. Because while Erika is skippable, there's not exactly a clear path forward on what to tackle first with it.
I did a Poliwhirl playthrough around last April. It was very good. Didn’t have time to make it into a video. I’ll do an official video for it (and Weepinbell) later in the year.
Scott, I think you're the best poke tuber. I've been watching your videos since the star, helped me sleep after coming home after overnights. You do an excellent job and your commitment to the game and your fans is unparalleled. Keep chugging on! Thank you for helping me fall asleep and entertaining me when I'm home alone. I'm sure I speak for a lot of us when I say please don't stop and keep going!
I can appreciate that in Gen1 every starter had a mon that was almost (at least) as good for an in-game playthrough. That way, no one was hamstrung into picking a certain starter if they wanted a mon for at that type (looking at you, Infernape in DP). Charizard had Arcanine (Blue had the slightly less good Magmar and Ninetales), Blastoise had Gyarados (for the patient) and Starmie, and Venusaur had Victreebel (where Red had the slightly lesser Vileplume).
I think you mean Ninetales is better than Arcanine ;) You’re so right with this comment. That’s one way Gen2 and gen4 failed imo. If you don’t pick the fire starter you have such limited options.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon True: better Speed, better Special, and a much early Flamethrower from its pre-evolution. Does mean that Blue has both better alternatives for Fire and Grass, though.
I am so excited for this one, most hyped I've been since your porygon playthrough. I do think victrebell will win, just cause it's faster, hits harder, and has better moves. But both are some of my favorite Gen 1 pokemon and I hope it's close
Fun fact: The Victreebell line is from a lesser-known carnivorous plant called a "pitcher plant". In real life these plants have an open-ended stomach that faces upwards and lures in insects (also sometimes frogs and mice) with sweet nectar near the lip, and the slippery surface causes the prey to fall in the stomach. Some species of this plant also have a leaf over the top of the stomach to prevent rain from diluting the stomach acid, just like you see pictured in Victreebell's sprite. It's actually much more efficient at pest control than Venus flytraps because they don't have to fully digest something to take in more prey. It was never a flower bulb... it was a stomach.
Writing before watching… I hope Vileploom is better, because I had Blue, and I always felt that the oddish line was better and was salty as a kid cuz I had the bad version. If Victrebell is better, I’ll be angry to find out I had the better version all along. Good luck Scott! Have fun!
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon Oh really! Dang. What's its biggest hiccup? Cause I remember it being stellar in JRose's video. Psychic typing was just so busted
Excellent as always =) It sounds like maybe we need a Poliwhirl VS Weepinbell playthrough? Except Weepinbell starts with Growth, whereas Poliwhirl doesn't get access to Amnesia until level 41... Maybe it doesn't need it until later, and then Poliwhirl does get Bubblebeam/Bodyslam early, then Ice Beam/Earthquake/Psychic, so I honestly don't know? I also have no idea which Pokemon should VS Gloom, to me the closest match-up looks like Dragonair?

Thank you!
You’re welcome!
If Victrebell starts with Razor Leaf, it's gonna be one sided
Edit: i just checked the movepolls, and both starts pretty well, but i think Victrebell is gonna win, thanks to the Razor Leaf+Sleep Powder combo. Vileplume has Petal Dance, so in the beggining is not gonna be really hard, but in a long run it's gonna struggle...
I actually use a Victreebel in Yellow Version, it's not canon to my actual Kanto Pokémon team.
@@smb-c3po i think it's the best grass type in gen 1. Exegguntor is also crazy good, but it's only used in the late game
@@Red-jq6bw The only temporary party member I use in Johto is Hoothoot until my Togepi finally gives enough of a shit about me to wanna evolve.
Finally another vs video. I know they take a lot of work but damnit they are worth it. Great job Scott.
Did anyone notice Vileplume got so many crits in this run? It performed well and the video was great overall
So - judging by Victreebel's incredible time, I have one important question:
Is Venusaur gonna beat its time?
Better speed, better defense, same special, almost same atk, almost same movepool.
Unfortunately, it's stuck with Vine Whip until lvl 30. And no Acid could slightly delay with early Bug Catchers.
I think Venusaur will do really well.
I've been watching you for years now, and it's so satisfying to see you have sponsors now
Victreebel is better anyway and actually learns attacking Grass-type moves, I actually use one for my non-canon Yellow Version team and ain't even my official Kanto team.
Ah sweet, we get *THREE* playthroughs today! That's (usually) how you know the Pokémon Scott's using have great potential!
That was a good one love the vs ones. Can't wait to see Haunter, Kadabra, & Alakazam's redo to complete those evolutionary lines.
Good grief Scott! Thanks for validating all my childhood beliefs about my Gen 1 teams! Victrebell was always my grass type if I chose Squirtle or Charmander in Blue and it was always such a beast but seeing the numbers behind it and what you did was awesome!
The drawing of bruno looks too competent. A confused bruno like a lost hiker would be great🤣
I reckon after you've done all pokemon in yellow you take the top 32 and do a speedrun vs. tournament with them.
The production quality is just so good. Keep it up love your stuff!
Scott I just want to take a moment to thank you. You've very gradually become one of my favourite Pokemon game UA-camrs and I'm grateful for your content. All the success to you mate.
I’m glad you’re enjoying my stuff! Thanks for taking the time to leave this comment. Keeps me motivated!
I never knew I could live for Bruno disrespect until I found your channel. Keep up the good work
Sometimes when I don't have a lot of time I skip to the end of videos like these to see the results. But knowing how much you put into the runs I just waited until I had enough time to watch it all.
I hope it was a good ride!
Victreebel is far superior for hiding the corpses of your enemies.
Literally rewatching this so i can do a good victreebel run. Thank you for showing me dee way Scott!
Congratulations on hello fresh sponsore! So proud of you man
I always liked Victreebel. Never my favorite pokemon, but up there. Your videos are always really entertaining, thank you!
I love you Scott literally the best videos to listen to late and to fall asleep to. In a good way
As a Poison Type Gym Leader, I am endlessly happy to know that the Poison Type owns the S Tier.
Vileplume's trainer: u're not runnin' properly!
Victreebel: *Screams*
Doesn't get much better than a Gen1 vs video with Scott :D
This makes me very curious about Venusaur! And the layout in these new videos is gorgeous to look at!
Good idea. I’d have to map the Japanese games for my software to work. I’ll try to do it in the future.
Man the passion , love your work, hope your channel grows buddy
Always look forward to new vids from Scott! I never cared much for Vileplume tbh though, not surprised at it's performance comparatively.
The oddish line is probably my favorite.
I actually really love both of them! Both of them used to be my fav at one point in time
Wow, seeing both of them speed through so fast!
I used to be really into carnivorous plants when i was a kid so I always thought the bellsprout line was so cool.
I really like and have used both of these actually, I used Vileplume in my successful Emerald nuzlocke and used a shiny Victreebel in my Lets Go Eevee playthrough.
Mimicking Lick and combining it with Swords Dance is amongst the most original strategies I've seen anywhere to be honest!
Hey Scott, amazing vid. That’s all! Keep up the good work. Yellow vids are my favourite and the reason I fell in love with your channel
Just noticed you edited the game file to put Scott and Butt as options for names. I like it!
I’ve had that for awhile now!
Yeah if pokemon were real I'd prefer having a Vileplume I'm not trying to end up like James with a Victreebel.
Yeah took a couple months off of versus videos. Last one was December 24th.
Victreebel is actually my favorite and I never would have guessed my goofy little plant would do so well
Been asking for this one for so long and I am stoked to hear who wins. Rooting for my boy Victreebel, but I wouldn't be surprised if it went either way.
Edit: Well, I am glad to see my favorite become number 1! At least as of now.
This was amazing! Wow! So much work and dang those plants are fast! Thanks man :)
You’re welcome!
Scott's really have that speedrunning vibe, where the runner thinks the run sucks, a lot of it went wrong and still the run broke the WR
I've always loved Victreebel so this was a really fun video to watch!
6:26 I love that little name easter egg with all of my heart
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon Looking forward to those!

Oh yeah, I guess the Dragonite can do it too!
That has the be the most intense rival 4 battle I've ever seen on this channel.
the way i lol'd at the mirror move. Loving this so far!
Sponsorblock on this video is super funny "and if you're hungry" "start with victribell"
That Mimic strat for Agatha was so cool!
I won’t be stopping. I love doing this. Hopefully more and more frequent content over the coming months!
I can appreciate that in Gen1 every starter had a mon that was almost (at least) as good for an in-game playthrough. That way, no one was hamstrung into picking a certain starter if they wanted a mon for at that type (looking at you, Infernape in DP). Charizard had Arcanine (Blue had the slightly less good Magmar and Ninetales), Blastoise had Gyarados (for the patient) and Starmie, and Venusaur had Victreebel (where Red had the slightly lesser Vileplume).
gen 1 is the best for making a balanced fire water grass core.
I think you mean Ninetales is better than Arcanine ;)
You’re so right with this comment.
Scott's just like "lemme do a whole nother run so I can buy one extra vitamin in the mid game"
Fact
I love the artwork with Victreebels leaves curled into fists, haha
One of these will dance on the others metaphorical grave, a performance involving long sharp pieces of metal
I did not expect that re-run result of Victreebel!
Three for finally giving us a vs video again.
Writing before watching… I hope Vileploom is better, because I had Blue, and I always felt that the oddish line was better and was salty as a kid cuz I had the bad version. If Victrebell is better, I’ll be angry to find out I had the better version all along. Good luck Scott! Have fun!
"Mama isn't the law. I am the law" - Judge Dredd
Insane! Didn't expect Victreebell to dethrone Gengar. Was expecting that to come from Alakazam or Mewtwo
Alakazam is quite bad in Yellow. It probably won’t make S tier
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon Oh really! Dang. What's its biggest hiccup? Cause I remember it being stellar in JRose's video. Psychic typing was just so busted
Excellent as always =)
It sounds like maybe we need a Poliwhirl VS Weepinbell playthrough? Except Weepinbell starts with Growth, whereas Poliwhirl doesn't get access to Amnesia until level 41... Maybe it doesn't need it until later, and then Poliwhirl does get Bubblebeam/Bodyslam early, then Ice Beam/Earthquake/Psychic, so I honestly don't know?
I also have no idea which Pokemon should VS Gloom, to me the closest match-up looks like Dragonair?
Dude. Your vids are wicked
Been a watcher for ages now and honestly usually never comment
But, this vid brought back so many memories. My brother and I always played and he always loved the Oddish line and I always loved the Bellsprout line. So this was really cool man. Made me so happy!!
I'm glad that the video could make you happy!
@Scott's Thoughts Very happy man. Thank you for the reply and all your hard work. You're definitely my favourite to watch on youtube so thank you!!!!
About an hour into this video, I was thinking "This is a good video and all, but something's missing..." Then, a few minutes later, I hear it. "Damage rounding threshold." And all was right with the world.
Haha yeah I did mention it a lot less in this video. Wasn’t very important for either of these Pokémon.
This proves once again that Victreebell is a beast in gen1!
