I clicked on this painting because I’m planning on painting a portrait of my boyfriend and I’s pup, and I couldn’t help but think that she looks so much like our puppy “Luci” and then you said her name and I was like what a coincidence! Haha, Loved the video and all the tips about planning and how to capture a great reference photo!

okay this is a huge subject! one in which i've tried to work a lot on, literally took months of learning and practicing photography (so long since i kinda got a thing for photography too ^^') so i'll give my advice, (i'll talk in full frame focal lenghts) the widest for people or capturing moments i'd go is 35mm lens, like, specially for including some background, for possibly tighter shots i'd go with 40 or 50, and for far way "dont wanna interrupt" moments i'd go up to 70 or 85 maybe, it works well since from afar our eye's perspective will work more like a telephoto lens and from upclose it gets near to some degree of wider distortion. camera wise... sony a6100, bears better internal technology and some better colors while not breaking the bank, entirely, if you're willing to buy different lenses or swap lenses, its an outstanding piece of equipment.. but if you want one go to lens, the newer sigma 18-50 2.8 (27-75 full frame equivalent) is an affordable, compact, and greatly well performing lens. if you want a smaller point and shoot, i recommend the sony rx100 VA, or the sony zv-a, the first one has a pop up viewfinder and alluminum buttons and a different style of articulated screen, and the second is a little newer with better internal tech, cheaper but made of plastic and hasnt that so desired in strong light or for photography, viewfinder (a viewfinder is where you put your eye to see crystal clear what your camera sees, but both have a full frame 24-70 2.8 equivalent lenses and they perform very nicely, out of all point and shoot options out there, which includes the technology and size of the camera when it comes to other point and shoots in the same category. you can also edit the colors your camera captures with picture profiles in any of these sony recommendations, and to be able to send the pictures to your phone through a wifi function app... overall that sums up my camera recommendations specifically for any artist looking to shoot their own photo reference! (its a journey getting comfortable with photography, for real)
(i also tried a canon m100 with similar capabilities to the canon m50, it lacks in various departments compared to the other sony's, but the color is also most exaggerated too, pictorically pretty but noticeably out of reality)

Delightful insight into the world of the artist. Your points about working from photographs are so true and should be at the forefront of every artist mind when accepting commissions. Looking forward to the next one. 👍🐶

Well explained. During COVID and other times I have been sent photos, very often they can be aerial shots, distorted, flash in eyes... Ugh. It's funny that people can expect an eye level view from those references. I tell them that I don't want to make things up. If the dog is deceased, sometimes I have to look online for an eye of that breed or other tips and they still cry when they get the finished portrait. Memories fade I guess. : ) I always try for eye contact and prefer morning or evening light for more nuance of color and lighting. It's challenging when the subject is loose and not under any control while I scramble around to shoot. Thankful for digital cameras!

13:44 for the mock-up you are mentioning, how do you generate the background? It looks like using a reference photo taken from an actual painting? I really like being able to do this, I guess I can do it in procreate as I just started to use procreate recently :)

Love your painting style! Your signature on the paintings is unusual, is that what your real signature looks like, or is that something you developed just for your paintings?

Chelsea...On the chance that you check out the comments occasionally I have a question about one of your older videos about using lead ground with an ACM panel. I typically do an under painting either with a fairly solid neutral color in a lean oil paint or sometimes one or more colors, also in lean oil, that I think might shine through the paint enhancing the painting. With that in mind, is using the lead ground so you wipe back to the surface still useful if I apply, and let dry, an under painting? I recently started painting and am trying to avoid the hard knocks where I can.

Lightroom is helpful indeed for cropping and changing the brightness. However, it is unaware of the lightness of your paints. That is one of the reasons why I created a desktop app that can adjust the image lightness based on the darkest and lightest paint color (it also allows cropping, grayscale conversion, etc.)

Useful advices, good experience, thank you! I cant wait to start painting my pets. I cutted the cardboard, covered with primer. And after I made some fun photos I found that those fun pictures are very poor reference for painting. Thank you very much.

Can you lend some advice on how to help people understand what a good reference photo is? Not matter how I word it, I still get "terrible" photos from potential clients. They seem offended when I suggest a different one.🤷‍♀️
