When I started painting 10 years ago, my drawing skills were really lacking but it didn’t stop me. I’ve painted a lot of bad paintings in those years but it was so necessary to get where I am now.
@@rinkerd3575 when drawing make shapes, draw lines etc use whole arm movements. When adding tiny details use the wrist movement. This will bring boldness in your work and a sense of liveliness will be created Drawing demands you practise it every single day. Painting you may skip but for drawing draw atleast 1 drawing. It can be anything still life, figures etc. I have uploaded some videos on drawing with some tips.
Excellent tips! God, I don't think I even own 12 tubes of different colours. Love the idea of printing out reference, put in plastic sleeve and then colour-match on top of it.
Wow. Everything you touched upon is exactly what have struggled with for YEARS!! I am a self taught portrait artist (my mother and grandmother were also talented self taught portrait artists) but I am terrified of starting in oils! It's my dream to paint like Sargent. I'm learning so much from your videos. I learned about the limited color palette from another realist painter on UA-cam (draw mix paint) and it totally made sense AND took my fear level down a few pegs. Also, what you mentioned about not waiting for everything to be perfect. I tell myself all the time - just dive in! - but I never do for fear of messing up. The fear of wasting material is real.😆 Thanks for your videos. I am gleaning all the info I can!
I've been drawing with ballpoint pen and colored pencils my entire life, but I want to learn to paint before I die. This video was very helpful and encouraging. Art for me is all about transferring a portion of your soul into the medium or genre you're working with, and it just seems logical to me that oil painting was invented for this purpose.
you have the best mindset ..backing up to review ..!! Pure gold! My ex is a smart woman. She often told me I was spending way too much time cleaning up in the garage rather than just get to work..As you say if one waits till all is perfect ..any real work will not get done..Simple practical!!!!
not blending on the canvas is the most helpful...!!!! The comment about how to determine the color needed.. Simple but needs to be intentional.. Thank you. It was very encouraging to see how you corrected the drawing..!!! Using the largest brush possible very very important..Thank you for these posts !!!
Tremendous.. I can't pick just one because as an experienced amateur they all 10 ring true. I'm trying to just get the portrait of resemblance that I can of key people in my life, like grandson and wife, but soon will be changing style completely to be more in the direction you describe. I'm nowhere near as loose as I want to be. When I go there, I will start to paint scenes with loved ones using more of these methods. Thanks very very much. Every video you do is a gem. You don't overburden with technique. I love the fewer colors idea, and simple matching of value with loaded brush. Thanks again!!!!
Excellent and all very good points. I’ve done so many studies to improve. Kevin McPherson’s books has many good ideas for improvement and I’ve done many. One tip I’ve done too is to count my brushstrokes. It’s time consuming but makes you take a look at the reality of what you are doing. Thank you. I so much appreciate your videos.
Great video! Your work is beautiful! ☺ These are incredibly helpful tips, and I especially agree with not putting enough paint on the canvas from fear of wasting it.
I always learn so much from you. Thanks for sharing. I love the horse paintings as I am an equine artist myself. One that is trying to become much loose.
The thing I struggled with is bring patient with the weird or ugly early stages and trying to fix everything before that’s even appropriate. Great painting!
Is one of the mistakes going to be 'do not light candles near flammable art supplies' 😁 Added to 'Arty stuff' playlist to watch when I actually have enough sequential days off to start a painting.
Another great video! One suggestion would be to bump your vocal output channel about 25%. I adjusted the volume up substantially to hear you and it was fine until the next video auto played at 5am Sunday morning. 🤫😂 I'm ok, wife doesn't move fast enough to catch me that early.😎 Thank you once again for everything you do.
Thank you so much for that video and all others!! I need to know how to draw w traditional materials and oil paint especially for college but I raised up as an only-digital self-tought artist and now everything about paints looks so scary for me and your chanell helps me so much with anxious and practicable skills ☺️ also I love how do you draw horses 🥺
I make mistake number 9 based on time. If I don't think I have enough time to finish the section I'm working on, I don't start. I hate laying out a bunch of paint, only to have it dry because I can't get back to the painting until a week later. I need to get over it and just paint.
Hi! I put my palette with paint on it in the freezer. It will keep fresh until you have time to paint again. I do this all the time. Give it a try and you won't have to worry about wasting paint anymore.😊
@@debpav739 I don't know where you live but where I am there is no more stay-wet materials. I was looking for some replacement sponges and pallet paper a month ago. There was none and was told stay-wet went under due to the pandemic. Pax
I am real beginner in oil painting and I have to use water miixable oils (mine are Cobra). May I use your technique with these oils? I love your videos!!!
The biggest problem I think I have when it comes to matching colors 'accurately' is that my setup isn't great. I often paint with artificial lighting but the lighting on my canvas doesn't match the one on my palette and so it becomes an impossible task. Still trying to find ways to fix that. I often find myself painting after dark because I still work full time.. so natural light isn't really enough for me. I'm also out of patience and tired often and that's not the best precondition for patiently mixing colors.
Try buying 5400-5600K LEDs for the room you're working in. A lot of normal LEDs have a much warmer color temperature at around 2700-3200K,which is very different from daylight
@@km099 That's a good point. I actually had one but it only covered the canvas so I was stilling having inconsistencies with the palette and reference. I got some milky ceiling panels now which do a great job and they have the whole colour range.
Don't know about Chelsea but I also have a lot of brushes as I keep getting them as birthday and Christmas gifts. I now have enough that I can use a technique I learned from another artist and that is to use a different brush for the lights, darks and the midtones. Pax

do you have tips to get better at drawing, when you like painting but drawing you like less?
Do you have any page where you show your artwork?

That was so beautiful to watch
Thank you Chelsea for all your sound advice. You were born to paint, you make it look so effortless, when most of us know otherwise.

I set up my easel and paint in the corridor of my apartment. It is perfect for backing up.
absolutely love this painting...so awesome
Awesome info for a beginner like me. Thank you! 👍🏼

I was sent to you by Chris @paintcoach and as soon as I saw you paint horses I got SO excited!!! I can’t wait to watch your videos!
Absolutely fantastic

Great work.
All good tips! Would you recommend premixing your paints before starting?

Thank you!!!
Thank you for this informative video, very useful for me.
Thank you so much, Chelsea. These ideas are spot on and super helpful!
Such good points and a beautiful introduction.
Interesting that you chose not to complete the horse on the right.
What made you choose that? Cool.
Amazing👍👍👍

Agreed. I had to switch on captions because my phone couldn't output loud enough sound even when I gave full volume.
This was super helpful, I especially resonated with tip #9. Loved the painting too!

Good tks. You have more brushed than the ladies room on prom night!
I would recommend setting your camera to manual focus to avoid it focusing on the movement of your hand instead of the painting 🤗

Sounds like you're using a reluctant paint. If so, I recommend a 'Sta-wey Pallett '. It can keep your paint wet for weeks. 😁
@@debpav739 no I use oil paints and it works great!

I know how you feel. I bought this flood light to try and combat the lighting problem, but it still isn't the same as natural sunlight.

Are you painting straight onto a linen canvas?
I thought lighting a candle was going to be the first mistake🤣
Fery nice....
just curious, why do you have so many brushes? i love brushes, just wondering why so many. :D

Question. Is this painted in one go?
Now we have not only one aggravating commercial before videos on UA-cam, but rwo.
What are you painting on? It looks like a stiff surface, I don't know, maybe it's covered with a canvas.
It depends on why type of art you’re doing.
😊❤
Top 4 errors for me are failing the 4-B's: Big Brushs, Brush-strokes, Boldness (per se), and Big canvas.
7:58 are you stalking me or are you a wizard? No other explanation 😜
Chelsea, you have entirely too few brushes.
so confusing!!! it really does not reveal the mistake, as she is describing she is painting!?? where is the mistake????
Donate your paintings.
