The name of the group Niagara is because the singer is a fan of Marilyn Monroe. She took the stage name of Muriel MORENO which is an anagram of Monroe. They also sing a song called "Quand la ville dort" which is the French title of the movie "The asphalt jungle" in which Marilyn stars.
Yes, they did know how to make video. This was made on purpose. Just a funny way to mock the standards.
And in France, the late 80's was a quite gold mine of those creators.

The fact that it is nonsensical IS the purpose of the video. It's full of micro-references to pop culture, play on meaning and visual jokes. This video style was followed a lot by singers/groups from the Rennes area. There was a whole bunch of artists that came up from that city, or got associated with it, like Etienne Daho, Elie Medeiros, Niagara. Lio, though Belgian, also came to be associated with this group. It was all about fun, being irreverent by playing with symbols and imagery, very tongue-in-cheek as well as "crazy" in the vein of British Rock/punk protesting. It's definitely dated because current music has NOTHING like this to my knowledge (except occasionally with people like Stromae or Angele). I always liked Niagara, and found Muriel (the singer) very beautiful, elegant and with incredible flair for cool outfits. Their songs eventually became a bit too "samey". But they had a good 10-year run. Many excellent videos to explore.

These videos have aged a lot. When the music video appeared it was new and the directors were excited, they wanted to show their creativity by making it as weird and incongruous as possible. I quickly got tired of that, ultimately they are all the same and there is no more originality.
The problem is also that by capturing the eyes we pay less attention to the music, even though that is supposed to be the main thing.
Nothing better than a good live performance !
