How to Get Rid of Visceral Fat? (The Foods You Need to STOP Eating) | The Nutritarian Diet

  • Dr. Joel Fuhrman starts off this discussion on visceral fat with a little introduction to the brain. Over time, an obese person loses control over their eating habits due to changes in their brain. Which part? The 'appestat' located in the hypothalamus which regulates hunger and signals us when enough food has been eaten. As soon as blood sugar levels drop below a certain point, information is sent to the appestat which releases hormones making us feel hungry. Conversely, once we have eaten enough these messages and hormones reverse and make us feel full, telling us to stop eating. Those who are lean have a properly functioning appestat while those who are overweight don't, meaning they cannot stop themselves from eating more than necessary.
So now the question is, what messes up the appestat that leads people to eat too much and gain weight? Carbs? Absolutely. But there's more: Processed sugar, salt, and oil. Here's Dr. Fuhrman for the rest of the nitty-gritty.

I cook my own food at home. When i put LoSalt (made with mostly potassium chloride) into my food it doesn't make me hungrier. Nor does the olive oil, but sweeteners do make me hungrier. That's why i stopped buying protein bars because the sweeteners are too sweet, therefore make me hungrier. Now i feed my sweet tooth with berries, specifically organic blueberries. By the way, i went from 190 to 130 eating olive oil with my fish.

One thing I wonder is if you have POTS like me, you need extra salt because my blood pressure is very low. When I have extra salt in my food my BP is 120/60, once it was 80/60 and I passed out and was in the hospital and needed IV with extra sodium.

As a neutral observer on the plant based / animal based debate, the bias of this presenter becomes so obvious by his omission of so many other factors that impact on weight gain and health. I am amazed that he is still on the ‘saturated fat causes you to get fat’ wagon that has been well and truely derailed by current scientific analysis. The so called research of Ancel Keys (who coincidentally was funded by the sugar industry), cherry picked 7 countries to suit his conclusions. When the entire 22 countries data was analyses there was no link whatsoever. This was obviously politically and agenda driven science to support the position of the sugar industry. I’ve listened to this presenter suggest that anyone recommending meat or an animal based diet should be ‘put in jail’ and he cites a whole variety of epidemiological studies that ‘ unequivocally, unquestionably, etc etc prove meat causes heart disease and cancer’. These studies are based on questionnaires that ask people to recall what they ate over an extended period, in some studies, to 12 months! They also classified, hamburgers, lasagna, processed meat, spaghetti bolognese as ‘meat’! Absolutely ridiculous to use this data as ‘evidence’ that meat causes all these health issues. He also cites the ‘Blue Zones’ as evidence for eating only plants yet fails to acknowledge that people in the so called ‘Blue Zones, consume significant amounts of animal products including cooking their vegetables in animal fats! There is ample evidence of different population groups around the world that have done, and continue to live long and healthy lives on animal based diets, another fact he seems to either be ignorant of of simply chooses to leave out because it doesn’t fit his absolute plant based agenda. I have also listened to a variety of animal based doctors who present far more relevant and real evidence to support the inclusion of animal products on the diet but also acknowledge the place of plant foods. I find this presented both arrogant and uninformed, using faulty and outdated science to sledge hammer home is own agenda. Not worth listening to him again!

Add up your daily carb intake. You might think you are healthy but I suspect you are eating way too many carbs, and partly insulin resistant.
Try skipping the occasional breakfast, and skipping the sugar-laden banana and mangoes.

Correct me if I am wrong, is all oil unhealthy?
Calories aside, what about the italians consuming all that olive oil?
Since I’ve started consuming my daily fats from olive oil and a variety of nuts, my immune system has improved greatly.
During my childhood until my 20s I’ve maybe been sick 3 times.
After my 20s to 23 I’ve stopped eating lots of healthy fats like nuts and olive oil and guess what?
I’ve been sick sick more often within 3 years that I’ve been during my whole life, not only that but I had a lot of sinus infections and all that.
At 23 I decided to go back and introduce olive oil and nuts and I’ve not been sick in the past 3 years.
Once again, calories aside since I got that in check.

Dr Fuhrman has most aspects right but some clearly wrong. The cell membranes are made of phospholipids and we need good oils to create good cells.
Oils do not cause fatty liver, fructose does. There is nothing wrong with coconut, olive or avocado oils. They are non oxidative and non inflammatory.
The human has a large brain which is mostly fat. The human stomach is acidic to digest protein. The human GI tract is smaller than most mammals as we don’t ferment cellulose. The human pancreas is undersized as we are not designed to consume carbohydrates in significant quantity.
His notion of anti-meat, anti-oil and pro-plant is not justified or supported by evidence. I don’t agree with going full carnivore for most, but the plant-based food zealots are likewise delusional.
All carbs are bad, most fruits are bad, some oils are good and required, and meat and animal fats are required by the brain and cells for optimal function.

It's improved how my tummy feels. 2 teaspoons is about 20 calories, that's nearly nothing, your mixing it with your coffee, not eating it by the spoonful. It's got antioxidants in it too.
