When Disney want us to watch something, they smother us with marketing And when they don't want us to watch something, they don't even bother to promote it
@@toddkes5890 I believe that was the main reason cause I remember seeing the trailers for Treasure Planet as a kid and I use to have McDonald’s toys of the movie.
@@brostarx Disney purposely wanted this movie to fail to move out of their traditional animation department. The trailers literally spoiled the whole movie lol
theres a few videos floating around that talk about this movie and it being left to die by disney and they wanted and excuse to move away from the traditional animating techniques and move into the CG rendered sphere.
And the fact that disney didn't even want this movie to be made in the first place which lead them to barley promote the movie and release it the same time as Harry Potter 2, the Santa clause 2 and 8 mile.
I'm pretty sure the reason it didn't do well was because it was a Disney movie that wasn't about rescuing a princess. Audiences needed a few more years to open their minds a bit more.
Many factors played a part in it bombing. The main reason was Disney was never interested in marketing Treasure Planet even though it was the dream project of the makers who worked with Disney for a long time. Disney never even considered their hard work and continued not to market or promote it anyways. The other reasons are as the above people said that it was not a princess movie and was released alongside Harry Potter.
31:56 I think the thing about Flint is that it was always about having his treasure, never about spending it or doing anything practical with it. The love of gold in his case was literally that, a love of having gold and treasure. And if he couldn't bear the thought of anyone else having it in life, why would he want anyone to have it when he was dead.
Another moral to the story is centered on Jim: don’t let the hardships of your past keep you from living up to your potential. Especially when the people who care about you see it the brightest. I’ve learned a lot from Silver and Jim’s relationship.
This movie is based on the book, Treasure Island by Robert Lewis Stevenson. Interestingly, Disney made a live action movie of the book, one of their first live action movies, also. Treasure Planet is amazing from an animation point of view because it was a hybrid of classic cell animation and computer animation. It was well written and fantastically animated, but while Disney originally green lit the production, with the proposed follow on TV series, several companies lead by Pixar, were making computer animated features that were a step above cell animation. Disney saw that cell animation was dying, and computer animation was the future. If they wanted to be a part of that future, they were going to have to follow the other animation studio's lead. This resulted in Treasure Planet being under promoted so it wouldn't do well at the box office, and also canceling the TV series.
In case you’re wondering, John Musker and Ron Clements also directed The Great Mouse Detective, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules, Princess and the Frog, and Moana! ❤️ This movie was a dream project for the two of them for over a decade, which makes it all the sadder that it became the box office bomb that it was. 😔 Fortunately, it was nominated for the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, did a lot of cool revolutionary techniques with combining animation styles, and has a passionate audience. ❤️
I love this film so much, it along with Brother Bear, Disney's Dinosaur and Atlantis are so underrated films in my opinion as they were a huge part of my childhood, mostly Disney's Dinosaur because it has an amazing soundtrack, fantastic CGI for a 2000 movie and amazing villains that prove you can be threatening without a voice.
Brother Bear is in my top 3 favorite disney movies so I'll always love it And dang Dinosaur IS super underrated. Sure it might not look great but it's still enjoyable. Maybe its just the nostalgia for me
I think this movie connects more with boys/men because it's basically a father and son story. A lot of boys can sympathize with Jim Hawkins (wanting a dad/man role in their lives to show them the ropes), and a lot of dads can sympathize with John Silver (making mistakes throughout life, but finding redemption in being a role model, and using tha to be a better man)
I think that’s being overly specific. It’s more a parent-child relationship. Fathers and mothers abandon daughters, as well as sons. I can’t imagine them not relating simply because Jim is a boy and silver is a man.
@@SusanaCanales1 No one said it couldn't relate to those relationships as well, but the fact of the matter is that all of those relationships are different and this is specifically about a surrogate father-son relationship and the writing reflects that.
Its suggested that Jims dad; Leland Hawkins, worked for the space government army, whether he volunteered or was unwillingly drafted is anyone's guess. He also married his wife when he was 19.
Really love the art style and character design in this. I remember I was doing the studio tour at Disney World in 2001 or so and saw concept art/story boards for this movie while it was in production, and I thought it looked amazing! But then when it hit theatres I didn't even know it had come out because they marketed it so poorly, so I did not see it until it hit DVD.
To shadow what people usually say about Treasure Planet, is that Disney simply barely marketed it, which is a shame... As such I didn't discover it until I was older, yet it still filled my mind with wonder. It's a great movie.
One of my first sci-fi loves My favourite scene has always been the Black Hole one (I love astronomical stuff). Nowadays I also love it because we just had a music about character development-bonding and this disaster happens, kinda interrupting the mood but also reminding us they're not on a cruise. They're on a space travel!😍
Having grown up during the 90s on Muppet Treasure Island, this edition was particularly awesome because it coincided with the sci-fi interest instilled by Star Wars. That aside, pirate themed parties were popular during the 90s and early 2000s. My younger brother had a pirate themed party--there were eyepatches, fake doubloons, and pirate hats galore.
I am currently running a D&D campaign in the Spelljammer setting, and Treasure Planet has a lot of similar aesthetics to what the game describes. Space fantasy is such a fun genre!
If you like adaptations of Treasure Island featuring strange creatures in classic roles, there's (I'd argue) the best version ever. Starring the impeccable Tim Curry, with a banger of a soundtrack, Muppet Treasure Island is a tongue-in-cheek, semi-parody of this same story. It's hilarious, it's got great lines, and Kermit gets to play the captain.
Two movies I would actually want Disney to do a live action remake for: Treasure Planet and Atlantis. Also fun fact: both movies share the same musical composer, James Newton Howard who also did two other animated films for Disney "Dinosaur" and "Raya and the Last Dragon" as well as "Maleficent" and all 4 "Hunger Games" films. Dude's a master at his craft.
26:20 *STAR TREK!* _"Dang it, Jim. I'm an astronomer, not a doctor! I mean, I am a doctor, but I'm not that kind of doctor. I have a doctorate, it's not the same thing. You can't help people with a doctorate. You just sit there and you're useless!"_
There was a sequel that was planned where silver and Jim would team up against a villain cast as Willem Dafoe. Dafoe was actually driving to record when he got the call to say it was cancelled.
This story has been adapted a dozen times, the most famous version is Disney's live action version from 1950. The 1990 version features a baby-faced Christian Bale as Jim Hawkins and the 1996 version has Muppets.
This and Sinbad are two of my favorite animated films of all time. And there's a few more of these top tier movies too, that era of animated movies was amazing.
I highly recommend that you check out BREADSWORD's video about this movie called Treasure Planet - Disney's Biggest Mistake. He goes over the history of how it came to be and how it was the dream project of Ron Clements and John Musker and how Disney wouldn't let them make it unless they made multiple successful movies for them, which they did (The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules) and when they were finally allowed to make their dream project come true Disney screwed them over by not marketing the movie which made it bomb at the box office
Fun fact: in order to see how silver’s robotic arm would look, they actually used an old animatic of Captain Hook from Peter Pan and placed it on that.
The Fact that the people behind treasure planet was already making a sequel before this movie came out, but got canceled at the end makes me always wonder what could have been.
Titan: A.E. Would be a good watch for you. A great Martin Short flick is Steven Spielberg’s “Inner Space.” The line “beware the cyborg” reminded me of a 70’s comedy, “Foul Play,” with Goldie Hahn and Chevy Chase. There is line in that, “beware the dwarf.”
If recommend checking out “Muppet Treasure Island” if you want another great version of the story. Tim Curry is Long John Silver and he’s one of the best movie pirates ever in it
26:15 “Dammit Jim I’m an astronomer not a doctor” is a clever nod to Star Trek where Doctor McCoy would say to Captain Kirk “Damnit Jim I’m a doctor not a ____” and say whatever the situation was.
Underrated Disney movie right up there with Atlantis Lost Empire, Meet the Robinsons, Oliver and Company, Brother Bear, A Goofy Movie, Emperor's New Groove, Lion King Simba's Pride, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Robin Hood, Hercules, and Tarzan
This is literally my favorite movie of all time. I still cry every time I watch it and hear the "I'm still here" version by Alex Ubago from the Latin American adaptation. As a Latin kid, the whole "father gone buying cigarettes" it's a common thing here so many of us related immediately to Jimbo. I re-watch this movie from time to time and it amazes me how good the direction, writing, animation and the overall masterpiece it is. It encourages me to reach that level as a designer/visual artist myself, and I'm still here trying to chart my own course. Glad you liked it as well :)
Rah I haven’t seen this in a minute, have you seen Iron Giant!? That’s a banger you’ll love, about if a gun had a soul, the directors sister I believe was shot dead which inspired the premise

I live in southern cali so I went to this place called El Capitan theatre where Disney would premier all their new movies with a theme event attached to it afterwards. Yes, another great movie! Such a shame that it didn't get the praise it deserved at the time. Another one that I really liked that I never hear people talk about is Titan A.E. Not Disney, but a really good animated movie and a great cast!
Yes, you are familiar with the directors, you just probably don't recognize the name. They were Disney's golden boys and this was there dream project, but Disney kept saying no. They kept saying, "make another great movie and we will green light your treasure island in space movie", but it was always one now movie
It's a very hidden gem in the Disney universe it's very underrated not many people talk about it unless they've seen it once or twice it's one of my favorites from the 2002 era
Captain Amelia is the best. "Doctor: to mule and blabber about a treasure map in front of this particular crew demonstrates a level of ineptitude that borders on the imbecilic -and I mean that in a very caring way... With the greatest possible respect: Zip your howling screamer." "Let me make this as - monosyllabic as possible. I don't much care for this crew you hired. They are -how did I describe them this morning mr Arrow? I said something very good..."A ludicrous parcel of driveling galoots" There you go: Poetry".
You got my subscirption for Treasure Planet and respect for seeing you also reacted to Atlantis! You are awesome! I really liked the cooking scene Silver did in this movie, as a kid, I found it mersmerizing for some reason. As an adult, I just realized I liked watching cooking. And animated cooking done in detail was extra so!
In case you don’t know. They actually had an entire sequel planned out as well as a tv show. Disney never picked up either of them. Even thought they got really far into the creative process of the sequel. You can see a lot of the concept art, characters and general plot floating around the internet. The concept art is gorgeous! So sad we never got to see it in real time.
I was literally thinking back to old memories and came across this movie, bought it, watched it 5x, cried several times due to the nostalgia and then looked up people's reactions to see if they also enjoyed the movie. My goodness this was and is still a tremendous movie
28:49 yippee 🥳 ki yay, scroops! 32:18 😏 35:35-35:42 🌙 38:17 that’s very nice of long John silver giving a share to Jim Hawkins. 38:50 yep 39:01 congratulations 🎈🎊🍾🎉
In my opinion, this was the last great hand-drawn animated movie ever produced by Disney. I hope that this style of animated movies will come back someday.
Love how this movie has Jim and Silver redeem each other meanwhile while trolling the audience into thinking they are enemies waiting for only one of the two to be left standing. Epic!
I'd LOVE to become fluent in FLATULA! LOL! Seriously though this is an amazing movie and I love it. I don't understand why it is soooooooooooo underrated and ignored most of the time. Thank you SOOOOOOO much for reacting to it!
It's Treasure Island. We know it's Silver right away if we know the plot, so they can make him enjoy the villainy. Know what take on it you should see next? Muppet Treasure Island!
ok to answer your question about why flint kept the treasure after his death. To put it simply, its extreme greed. He wanted the satisfaction that the treasure would only be his for eternity no matter how wasteful that would be.
John Rzeznik from Goo Goo Dolls does the song "I'm Still Here" Which is used during the Jim and Silver montage where he has his flashbacks. Also the movies ending song used in its credits "Always Know Where You Are"
Yesssssss! Some love for one of my favorite animated Disney movies! Ooh, I haven't even watched this whole video yet, but I know Mary liked this one! It's "Morph"in' Time!
Ah, this movie has never gotten as much love as it should. Pleasure to watch you get caught up in it! And you're right! The "loot of a thousand worlds" could have been put to all kind of good use. But you're a nice person. Captain Flint was a pirate, and a nasty one at that! That much loot, more than you could spend in a hundred lifetimes, was probably just a way of keeping score to him. This one was a pleasure, Mary. Thank you!
A highly underrated film. This was my childhood movie! My three childhood Disney films where Dinosaur, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, and Treasure Planet. All three scored by the amazing talented James Newton Howard. Those scores would always play in my head as a child. I highly recommend Dinosaur (2000) it’s a another simple but underrated Disney film. Some amazing CGI for 2000.
Dr Dilbert is one of my favourite side characters in any film. If I could be given the chance to voice act any Disney character it would be him. "I have a lot of help to offer anatomically-amanaonically- astronomically..."
This film was absolutely my childhood. It is amazing. The visuals are astounding, the soundtrack is the definition of perfection. It even got a sequel (of sorts) in the PC game Treasure Planet: Battle at Procyon that brings a lot of things in Jim and Silver's relationship full circle, as well as expanding the lore of the TP universe. We actually get to see Jim commanding his own ship in that game. Point of note, at the end, he isn't a captain yet, he's been accepted into the academy. Either way, great film, I'm so glad to find people that also enjoy Treasure Planet, as it truly is one of the greatest films ever made.

Yes, you are familiar with the directors, you just probably don't recognize the name. They were Disney's golden boys and this was there dream project, but Disney kept saying no. They kept saying, "make another great movie and we will green light your treasure island in space movie", but it was always one now movie
Im so glad you loved it Treasure Planet is my favorite Disney Movie :)
With the greatest possible respect: Zip your howling screamer."
"Let me make this as - monosyllabic as possible. I don't much care for this crew you hired. They are -how did I describe them this morning mr Arrow? I said something very good..."A ludicrous parcel of driveling galoots" There you go: Poetry".
YEEESSS.
I've had this on my laptop for years, i watch it all the time. Lol
My favorite Disney movie of the Rennaissance era.
Mine is the emperors new groove
At this point in time I'd settle for a live action remake or a live action sequel to this!!!
@@gracebrown3074 I know about the canned sequel! That's why I'd settle for a new live action sequel that would tank as long as we got SOMETHING
I saw this movie in theaters, and it’s been my favorite Disney movie ever since
I was literally thinking back to old memories and came across this movie, bought it, watched it 5x, cried several times due to the nostalgia and then looked up people's reactions to see if they also enjoyed the movie.
21:20 Doctor Doppler actually did intend to shoot the thing. He just happens to be just as surprised as everybody else that it worked.
i love how silver is portrayed, becuase he's such a relatable villain
I love that the solar surfer is using live rounds as fuel
"Youre gonna rattle the stars, you are." gets me every time.
In my opinion, this was the last great hand-drawn animated movie ever produced by Disney. I hope that this style of animated movies will come back someday.
I can still remember being a kid and seeing the Lunar Seaport in an early trailer and being in awe at what I was seeing.
0:56 John Musker and Ron Clements worked on most of the Disney renaissance films :D
It’s essentially a different take of the story treasure island
This is by far the best Disney movie ever!!! Unfortunately seriously underrated.
Thank you SOOOOOOO much for reacting to it!
this is one of my favorite versions of Treasure Island
It's Treasure Island. We know it's Silver right away if we know the plot, so they can make him enjoy the villainy.
Know what take on it you should see next? Muppet Treasure Island!
I recommend Collateral w/ Jamie Foxx and Tom Crusie
ok to answer your question about why flint kept the treasure after his death. To put it simply, its extreme greed. He wanted the satisfaction that the treasure would only be his for eternity no matter how wasteful that would be.
John Rzeznik from Goo Goo Dolls does the song "I'm Still Here"
Which is used during the Jim and Silver montage where he has his flashbacks.
Also the movies ending song used in its credits "Always Know Where You Are"
Yesssssss! Some love for one of my favorite animated Disney movies! Ooh, I haven't even watched this whole video yet, but I know Mary liked this one! It's "Morph"in' Time!
This movie is my childhood this a cult classic fr if you know you know the dad scene with the music is what I always remember the most 🖤✅ subbed
John Rzeznik’s song is still one of the greatest songs ever!
“They can’t see me
But I’m still here!”
Man, I LOVED this film when it came out! Especially the way the DVD menu comes to life! Simply amazing!!
If you enjoyed this movie, you'll probably love Muppet's Treasure Island
Many underrated Disney Classics
This movie always gets me, The scene where the dad is shipping off always reminds me of when my dad shipped off when he was with the navy
One of the greatest animated movies of all time and a personal favorite.
Definitely in my top 3.
this and Atlantis lost empire are the only disney movies that should have gotten live action remakes.
Dr Dilbert is one of my favourite side characters in any film. If I could be given the chance to voice act any Disney character it would be him.
"I have a lot of help to offer anatomically-amanaonically- astronomically..."
This movie and Atlantis was just let down in marketing. They're both amazing.
I can't unsee Ben behind you with the cherries and the cat thing
Lots of great “treasure island” movies out there. One of my favs is “Muppets treasure island”
This is one of my all time favorite movies. I can't wait to hear your thoughts on it. I love your videos keep up the great work!
