I absolutely loved the relationship between Jim and Silver and I think it's something that you almost never see. A genuine father-son type of relationship but they are direct foils of each other. I thought that it was really cool that Silver really wanted to be that pirate captain kind of guy and wanted the gold. But he valued the relationship of him and the boy with no father more. It's such an interesting dynamic that definitely should be explored more
8:38 - As someone whose dad left before I could remember, I could never relate to the stories about dead dads and whatnot... but that scene where Jim comes downstairs to see his dad leaving? Not the dad leaving, or the kid's abandonment mind you. It's the shot of the mom all alone, sobbing, broken, and reeling from being left to take care of a kid with nowhere to go and having no clue what to do or if they're going to make it that hurts like a *bitch* to see for me. 5:41 - I grew up reading my mom's old Calvin and Hobbes collection books so I was no stranger to words I didn't know, I just used context clues to recognize the gist of what they were saying and moved on. I liked the fact that it didn't baby me with "kids words" because I liked building my vocabulary. 10:26 - Edit: Yeah, but we're talking about a movie that has solar collectors that can generate massive amounts of energy in seconds, where classic boat designs are considered good for space, and characters can survive the vacuum and solar radiation of space without *any* protection. I think things like the precise physics of Black Holes and lack of temporal distortion can be forgiven. 12:17 - If they grabbed the seats so they wouldn't fall out and tucked their bodies in I think there would've been plenty of space between them and the top of the boat to avoid being hurt. 12:26 - "We've been tricked, we've been backstabbed! And we've been quite possibly... *bamboozled..."* 18:19 - Edit: Also, there are good and stupid reasons for what happened: Good: The planet's exploding, so if an internal component keeping the portal open was destroyed while they were traveling through it... Best-case scenario: Their ship gets cut in half and they die in a fiery blast. Worst-case scenario: Their ship gets cut in half but the portal malfunctions rather than completely shutting down and sends them to the other side of the galaxy/a void in another dimension where they slowly starve to death with no hope of rescue. Stupid: They fly along the planet's surface for way too long for the sake of looking good visually for the movie rather than flying straight up and away. 18:27 - Like... *really?* I also like the idea that the reason the handful of treasure Silver tossed Jim was able to not just rebuild the inn but *improve* it was that Flint had plundered such a huge amount of the galaxy's precious metals and stones that their newfound scarcity made them that much more valuable. And if the trap *hadn't* gone off the economy would've made the price of those treasures drop off a proverbial cliff, like what happened after Mansa Musa's shopping spree in the 1300s.
I loved reading all of this! 🥰 And I definitely agree about the vocabulary thing. I think especially as a kid you are a sponge so it’s actually nice to be able to learn things. And feel like you arnt being talked down to you.
Fun fact: I once used a stopwatch while watching the final scene with the rocket board and confirmed that B.E.N's timing was actually on point for when the planet would explode. Jim hit the switch at the exact moment that time ran out.

Treasure Planet is one of my favourite Disney movies! I've watched it well over 100 times by this point. Jim & Silver's relationship is one of the best in the film, next to Doppler & Amelia!! It was supposed to get a sequel, but due to underperforming at the box office it was never made. There were a few video games made for it though!! Loved your reaction!
Tell me why you look like a goddess everyday✋ anyway. Treasure planet is so underrated, it was my favorite movie growing up and I still enjoy it today.
hells YES also, Silver is 10/10 best dad Treasure Planet was an instant favorite for me Also, I'd like to inform you, there's a second movie for Atlantis
Said second Atlantis movie is not as good as the first and generally one of the unnecessary sequels/ bad movie with a confusing storyline where they added in so many elements to the story that don't make sense + disregards what the first movie said about Atlantis, it should stay hidden from the outside world so that the events of the first movies don't happen again (this is mostly my opinion, I'm not a fan of most Disney sequels except for the Rescuers Down Under)
Silver is probably my favorite reluctant father-figure character in all of Disney. I mean yeah, you got Kenai from Brother Bear and Kerchak from Tarzan and whoever the Deer was that fathered Bambi, but Brian Murray SOLD Silver from the first scene he was in. When he died three years ago I was so sad, because this film wouldn't be half of what it is without his performance as John Silver. He is, first and foremost, a brigand, a looter, privateer and a thief, which suits him fine. He's been single-minded in his pursuit of Flint's trove and has had no reason to concern himself with anything else. When I saw this movie, it was with my Grandparents about a year before my grandfather died. Silver's line "You give up a few things...chasing a dream" actually made my grandfather click his tongue and say "Huh...suddenly I'm invested." And so was I! That one line communicated decades of searching, pilfering, stealing, fighting and dirty-dealing, anything it took to get to Treasure Planet...and damn the cost. Silver was willing to lose most of his body to fulfill his dream. Then Jim comes along. I don't think Silver was ever 'soft'. You can be compassionate, impressed, proud and protective without being 'soft'. But you can't form meaningful relationships without changing, even if it's just a little but. Jim is clearly brilliant and gifted and brave and all that, but the thing that probably endears him to Silver the most is that Jim is at least TRYING to better. He's a bit pissy and has a lot of self doubt, but at least he's not a cut-throat, win-at-any-cost pirate. He's something that Silver rarely is: vulnerable. He's compensating for the loss of one parent by trying to grow into a man as fast as he can, even if he doesn't have the proper guidance and his mother can only do so much. Perhaps Silver see's Jim as his 'before' compared to Silver's 'after', the possibility of being something that Silver couldn't. So when it come's down to getting the treasure or saving Jim's life, Silver realizes that he has found something that ISN'T worth sacrificing just to attain his dream. He changes, becomes 'foolish' as he puts it, but ultimately, he's not the same pirate he was, just as Jim is no longer the delinquent cast-off he started as when the film began. I was so angry that this film, and in particular these characters, didn't get half of the attention and acclaim that they should have, especially considering the development hell this film sat in for almost fourteen years. But hey, you're a convert now, right? If you promote it, they will watch. Got to find a way to keep these little disasters alive, if only so other people can get pissed and say "Why isn't this a Disney Classic?!" What would you call Doppler and Amelia's kids? Pittens? Kuppys? :-P
I think "Sinbad" has kind of the same vibe as "Treasure Planet" but with greek mythology instead of space. It's really good! You should check it out if you have some time. And the animation of the Goddess of Chaos is INSAAAANE, I love it 😍
You should check out other underrated movies like : The Prince of Egypt Thumbelina The Last Unicorn The Pagemaster Charlotte's Web The Iron Giant Ferngully the last rainforest Spirit : Stallion of the Cimarron An American Tail All Dogs Go to Heaven The Rescuers Down Under
Which version of Charlotte's Web? The Live-Action film based on the first book(if there are more than one books) or the animated film with an animated sequel?
Honestly this movie is such a joy, it never fails to make me smile when it comes to jokes, or how beautiful the animation is (yes I know it's not the best but it's fantastic for its time)
Counterpoint, having another cyborg would have been the easy route. The route they went creates interesting conflict between Silver's desire to find treasure planet and his growing affection for Jim. If they copped out with a last minute twist villain it's like "Cool, Silver just gets to be a good guy with no narrative entanglements, lets stop this other villain who everyone can just openly dislike because who cares."
The relationship between Jim Hawkings and John Silver is one of the best any author ever came up with. I mean Silver is a coniving bad guy, but his care for Jim is real. And that is something no one ever expects.
the lines under jim's eyes aren't bags, i'm pretty sure; they're a facial structure thing referred to as "tear troughs." they usually get more pronounced with stress/weight loss, and they're noticably absent at the end of the film!
Kind of underrated, such an amazing movie, the cgi they used was the canvas 3D they used in Tarzan, it looks amazing but it was way too expensive for Disney, they were so sure it would be a waste of money they just let the movie die

I love this movie so much! There is also a great video here on youtube, called "Treasure Planet - Disney's Biggest Mistake", that explains the background of the production of this movie and why it ended up not getting the recognition and attention it deserved (for example: Only a few weeks prior to the release of this movie, the second Harry Potter movie got released)
Disney putting it up against Potter does deserve a lot of credit for the poor box office performance, yes. However, they probably didn't have much choice in the matter. They have zero control over Warner Brothers' release schedule, and at the time, they had a contract with McDonalds that said that there would be at least one feature length animated release each year that there could be a Happy Meal promotion for. So they had to get it out before the end of the year. What Disney DIDN'T have to do was put out The Santa Clause 2 just weeks earlier. It had been years since the first Santa Clause, it's not like there was an immediate high demand for a sequel. They could have sat on releasing Santa Clause 2 another year, and made it so that Treasure Planet's only competition for that Holiday Season Family Movie dollar was Potter. Instead, Treasure Planet had to go up against both the wizard and another offering from The House of Mouse itself. When you compete against yourself, you're just dooming one of your two offerings to lose to the other.
7:20 Fun fact, this was supposed to be in kingdom hearts but it was canceled do to its failure. Also, the creators of this made Aladdin, Hercules, Moana and helped make the Black Cauldron. They have actually made the most money as producers for Disney.

Ah yes, my favorite movie of all time. Others have stated it before, so all I can say is that it's true that the marketing for the movie was pretty much sabotaged and ruined the movie's chances in theaters. Upon its very quiet release, I low key took it as a personal attack that no one was talking about this movie, and I'm glad it's been getting more recognition over the years.
This movie is so good! The music, the steampunk, the wonderful redeemed villain cyborg! The adaptation from the story is clever and the animation is perfect, it sucks this movie is one of Disney’s most underrated!
I saw this movie as a kid but was more into the more princessy stuff and so only saw it a time or two. I just watched it yesterday for the first time in years and really liked it. The 18th century pirate aesthetic melded with sci-fi space stuff is a super cool idea, and the focus on a father-son type relationship instead of a romance was refreshing and quite sweet. It's such a shame both Atlantis and Treasure Planet flopped, but at least they're getting more recognition and appreciation now years later by people rediscovering them when they're older

@@DarkFoxKirin why have both of our brains latched onto these snippets of this movie I'll never know :D
I wake up from a cold sweat hearing Billy Bones saying that frrrr😂💯💯
Oh no, I hope that won't make you discriminate against cyborgs if they become a part of our society... :)
disney delayed its release, pushing it from summer to winter. the same winter the first harry potter released. they send that movie out to die to have a reason to stop 2d animation. its so tragic becasue this movies is so amazing. really glad you enjoyed this movie! its one of my favorites
Home on the Range killed 2D, let's be real
Actually it was up against Chamber of Secrets. But yeah shitty thing for them to do.
@@Nocturne22 at leas that movie made some money, treasure planet is one of the biggest failures in animation history, it costed a total of 180$ (production and advertising) and made globally less than 110$

AESTHETIC
Is it scientifically accurate or plausible? No.
Is it stylish in homaging the old days of sail? Absolutely.

Because the movie is in a steampunk era

Silver was the father figure Jim needed & Jim was the son Silver never had.
Fun fact: it took them like 10 years to make this movie because it was like a mix of hand drawn animation and CGI. It’s so criminally underrated😭
Also; if I’m not mistaken it’s Disney’s last hand drawn animation
@@EstherFromTheEther It's actually the 2011 Winnie The Pooh.

It was also shot down by executives and shareholders at every opportunity. It's a shame because you can see the passion this film has.

And here we have a reactor who has never read Treasure Island
To be fair, I haven’t read the book either. But, I did grow up with Muppet Treasure Island so yeah, not much of a secret by the time I got to see this movie.
I'm willing to wager that you might be the only person in this era who has read Treasure Island.
@@blairbrown4812 Do you know how long an era is?
If I remember correctly, this was the one of the last 2D animated movies Disney ever made-they used its poor theatrical performance as an excuse to justify only making 3D animated movies going forward. There's a really interesting video essay about it on UA-cam.
I think the last one is princess and the frog. Damn I miss the 2D animation
@@simonartclub6731 Na, the last one was Winnie the Pooh (not to be confused with "The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh")...the movie Lassiter throw in to excuse why Disney would stick to CGI.
Rumor has it that the new animation execs are considering bringing 2d back slowly. It will take some time, but it's at least back on the table from what I've heard. So I'm not losing hope.
@@jasminemiller7485 I really hope that the rumour is true. I had hoped that paperman would start the trend, being a short which at least looked handdrawn, even though it wasn't. (I would also love to see another Fantasia movie, but without annoying guest stars this time around).
This movie is criminally underrated. It's soooo good and we need more movies like this. 2D animation, good story, characters with so much heart and passion.
The smile after you say "she is a attractive mom" lol love it
Jim was my first childhood crush and he still is in that list. The cockiness and cleverness and the character development is just perfect
Jim was my role model when I was a kid I'm surprised he didn't fell in love this flim
If everyone is missing more gorgeously 2D animated movies. There's a wonderful movie called Wolfwalkers that came out just last year and it's beautifully animated in a 2D hand drawn style and the plot and characters are wonderful as well
Aw that’s so kind of you to share thank you
I would also reccomend Breadwinner, same studio as Wolfwalkers (Studio Saloon, Ireland)
“They had to go the easy route”
Nah they went for the more narrative route
This movie, The Iron Giant and Atlantis were the 3 favorite movies of my childhood by far. Always loved them.
It's such an interesting dynamic that definitely should be explored more
You should read the book then. I feel they captured the relationship so well.
@@MissCaraMint I might actually
*bamboozled..."*
18:19 - Edit: Also, there are good and stupid reasons for what happened:
Good: The planet's exploding, so if an internal component keeping the portal open was destroyed while they were traveling through it...
*really?*
I also like the idea that the reason the handful of treasure Silver tossed Jim was able to not just rebuild the inn but *improve* it was that Flint had plundered such a huge amount of the galaxy's precious metals and stones that their newfound scarcity made them that much more valuable. And if the trap *hadn't* gone off the economy would've made the price of those treasures drop off a proverbial cliff, like what happened after Mansa Musa's shopping spree in the 1300s.
I loved reading all of this! 🥰
And I definitely agree about the vocabulary thing.
Jim hit the switch at the exact moment that time ran out.
so many kids in the 90s with daddy abandonment issues lmao, we could all relate to this kid
@Hana Belle this is a 2000s movie too
Ben was universally received poorly. this was also supposed to be a trilogy. also, Joseph Gorden Levitt Killed it as Jim. I still feel eaw about it ow knowing that Jim's character progression was supposed to spa 3 movies and not just the one.

Nothing beats Silver's voice in the french dub. He has such a greasy laugh I swear it's my whole childhood
What about Sinbad: legend of the seven seas
Brazilian dub is also amazingly good
A **greasy** laugh. That's a first for me, yet so accurate.
Same in Italian, i love that laughter it's so wholesome
I forgot about this movie, but now I remembered how much that crab/spider thing scared me.

My absolute favorite from Disney Animation. This movie is probably why I became so invested in anything space or pirate related (ie. Star Wars, One Piece). It was just wildly beautiful to my eyes when I was younger and to this day still hold it to a high regard. Glad you peeped it.
I was 8 when i 1st saw this movie. I even collected all the Treasure Planet's Happy Meal toys n my dad bought me B.E.N figurine as he was my favourite! I remember getting super excited when he 1st appeared. Oh my..those days were just indescribable. The 90s & 2000s Disney movies was just a BLESSING for me😇 Tarzan will always be my favourite Disney movie n in my heart. But im sooo happy that u reacted to this movie so i get to see B.E.N. again. GREAT reaction, editings n funny commentary as always Ms Sophia😊
what's rlly cool is that silvers mechanical eye colour changes depending on if hes "good" (yellowy orange) or "bad" (red)

It was
It definitely was, but nowhere as much as when I was a teenager and rewatched it.
It both helped me and made me feel worse at the time: It helped me because made me think about life and where I was going with it. Seeing Jim try to help his mom made me think that I too wanted to _live_ to help my own mom... and made me feel worse because I just wanted _anyone_ to be good with me the way John Silver was good with Jim... But that never happened...
It was my favorite disney movie together with Tarzan....and still is

Treasure Planet is one of my favourite Disney movies! I've watched it well over 100 times by this point. Jim & Silver's relationship is one of the best in the film, next to Doppler & Amelia!! It was supposed to get a sequel, but due to underperforming at the box office it was never made. There were a few video games made for it though!! Loved your reaction!
Yess the "when you fall in dad with him" movie!!!

hells YES
also, Silver is 10/10 best dad
Treasure Planet was an instant favorite for me
Also, I'd like to inform you, there's a second movie for Atlantis
Said second Atlantis movie is not as good as the first and generally one of the unnecessary sequels/ bad movie with a confusing storyline where they added in so many elements to the story that don't make sense + disregards what the first movie said about Atlantis, it should stay hidden from the outside world so that the events of the first movies don't happen again
(this is mostly my opinion, I'm not a fan of most Disney sequels except for the Rescuers Down Under)
@@z2yn So true, it feels like it should have been like, a tv show or something, it felt like episodes just stitched together
Now you have to watch the most most *most* underrated Disney film, The Black Cauldron.
Okay I have to agree that is the MOST underated one! No one knows it!
YES I looove that movie. It's scarry, sad, funny and cheese (the good kind) all in one!
Got to find a way to keep these little disasters alive, if only so other people can get pissed and say "Why isn't this a Disney Classic?!"
What would you call Doppler and Amelia's kids? Pittens? Kuppys? :-P
I think "Sinbad" has kind of the same vibe as "Treasure Planet" but with greek mythology instead of space. It's really good! You should check it out if you have some time. And the animation of the Goddess of Chaos is INSAAAANE, I love it 😍
I watched this movie a while ago and really adored it despite the 3d models. Super glad you took a look at it
"They're using a lot of big words." Yes. I watched this when I was 16 and I had to look up some of those words because I had never heard them before

Honestly this movie is such a joy, it never fails to make me smile when it comes to jokes, or how beautiful the animation is (yes I know it's not the best but it's fantastic for its time)
Treasure Planet is hands down one of the best movies of all time.
Whenever I watch Jim's theme, I'm balling my eyes out!
"They can animate anything."
Followed by a fart scene. Truly the wonder of animation.
the lines under jim's eyes aren't bags, i'm pretty sure; they're a facial structure thing referred to as "tear troughs." they usually get more pronounced with stress/weight loss, and they're noticably absent at the end of the film!
Kind of underrated, such an amazing movie, the cgi they used was the canvas 3D they used in Tarzan, it looks amazing but it was way too expensive for Disney, they were so sure it would be a waste of money they just let the movie die
The director and the producer were originally going to do 3 movies but since the first one bombed at the box office they never did it.
Not bombed, sabotaged.
This movie didn't die... It was murdered. Disney killed it.
you should do A Goofy Movie next! it’s pretty underrated :)
YES please! :D It's actually a musical, and a pretty good one at that.
That whole scene @ 2:00 of him surfing through the air lol CEMENTED my enormous crush on Jim when I was a kid.
Glad you watched this, it's one of my favorite movies ever. Have you seen Road to El Dorado? I'm not sure if you mentioned it before. I have seen it so many times and it's so soothing that I usually fall asleep before the song in the movie if not during the intro XD
Atlantis and Treasure Planet are two of my favourite Disney movies of all time, I especially love the Treasure Planet soundtrack with its big single being written and sung by John Rzeznik, the lead singer of the Goo Goo Dolls
As a kid who grew up without a father. I relate to this underrated piece of art. This movie will always have a special place in heart. Everything about this film is just so amazing, the story, the animation, and the beloved characters.
I swear, this movie makes me cry consistently. Silver is such a great character.
"I haven't read a book, for fun, since high school" - this makes me a bit sad... : (
Very glad I got to enjoy this one as a kid. The video "Treasure Planet - Disney's Biggest Mistake" by BREADSWORLD on UA-cam will give you some great background on this movie and why it failed (in theaters). Great reaction!
Treasure Island is my favourite book of all time, and I absolutely love this movie. It deserves much more recognition!
Definitely one of the best Disney movies I've seen so far in life.
The scene where Jim is talking about his father hit home.
But also they finished it earlier and descided to wait to release it. So it feels kind of sneaky to me.
7:20 Fun fact, this was supposed to be in kingdom hearts but it was canceled do to its failure. Also, the creators of this made Aladdin, Hercules, Moana and helped make the Black Cauldron. They have actually made the most money as producers for Disney.
i had a friend from college who's favorite movie was treasure planet. and when i say favorite movie i mean she would watch it every time i came over

People went "Oh, Maleficent is the first time Disney went for a sympathetic villain!" Everyone who watched Treasure Planet: "Uh, *no."*
Ah yes, my favorite movie of all time. Others have stated it before, so all I can say is that it's true that the marketing for the movie was pretty much sabotaged and ruined the movie's chances in theaters. This was such a passion project and it's a shame Disney didn't care about it enough to help it succeed. My cousin and I enjoyed it so much as kids, and I even hope to get a tattoo of "you're gonna rattle the stars, you are" someday, so I'm happy to see others enjoying it nearly 20 years later!
I really adore this movie; Jim was a big childhood hero of mine and molded me into the free-spirited guy I am today!

I had this movie on VHS and I loved it (I switched between Treasure lanet, Anastasia and Harry Potter when I was three), I loved it enough so I have a tattoo of the map and treasure planet now.

5:38 ok, at the risk of sounding super nerdy, I'd watch movies with a dictionary within arms reach so I could look up words I didn't know and learn. This movie was my favorite to do that with.
Overall, as someone who had read (and loved) Treasure Island as a kid, I was hyped AF to see this interpretation.

I wish the sequel came through. They even had drew Jim’s partner too.
really where can i see that
@@Productive_Chad it’s really just concept art. I think Breadsword on UA-cam mentioned it.
I'd like to see a sequel with a grown up Jim.
7:18 The music for this movie was written and composed by James Newton Howard, who’s no stranger to Disney; he also did the music for Dinosaur, Atlantis, and Raya and the Last Dragon.
