    This video is the most well thought out,honest and educational video of its kind!!!
    Thank you so much!
    I switched to spinning gear a couple years ago,and love the simplicity or them.
    My Sahara reels do all I ask,and are by far the best bang for the buck I've found.

      They are so good that buying expensive stradics has become pointless. The saharas are hust as smooth, only a little heavier.

      i_fish-I hope I do see you around sometime. I believe we have a lot in common. I bet I’ve spent more at BigCarpTackle.com this year, however.... I think I may need professional help with my carp fishing addiction. The bad part is, carp are only my third favorite species behind Flathead Catfish and Crappie....I’ve got the European Carp Gear bug now, however-no doubt helped along by Luke from Cats and Carp and Brian Wiengard (?) Northwest Indiana. I know a place to catch 400 pounds of carp in five hours...with teenage girls doing all the catching and dad doing all the work (unfortunately).

      Out rivers are full of carp. I have videos with more thsn 20 carp on the channel. The problem is finding big ones. I had the euro carp fever too. Now i dont use carp tackle any more, it is too big and clumsy. My top 3 species are the same, but i dont know how i would rank them. Usually i fish for whatever has the best bite right now. And right now its just catfish.

    I spooled it with 8 LB test mono for lighter lures, gave it some practice casts and found that it did cast well ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e , except that the anti-backlash setting had to be turned up almost all of the way to keep the "overcasts' ' down. I disassembled it, and found that if I potted some "shim washers" behind that anti-backlash magnet assembly, it got the magnets closer to the spool without rubbing, and I could get better control with about a 6 to 7 out out 10-Max setting. I also noticed that the handle shaft had some internal end play, maybe only 2 or 3 thousands of an inch, but it's still noticeable. If the anti-backlash and shaft tolerances were "tightened up" this would be a fantastic value. I've only used it for 4 days of fishing in a month's time, but I plan on keeping it.

    Great video sir- One additional important thing the Nasci has that the sahara doesnt is part #17207, its a weatherproofing seal over the anti reverse clutch...As that bearing is truely the only part Ive had issues with on spinning reels, that little seal combined w/the knob and rotor nut seals is a nice feature (in my opinion)...At any rate- Thank you very much for the great content over the years!

      @@ifishcatfish I found multiple videos with these upgrades to knob handle and line roller. I don't understand russian, but it's easy to get the ideas what they suggest to do.
      1. Knob handle. Two 4 x 7 x 2.5 mm ball bearings are needed to replace white plastic cylinders. After that there is some movement of the knob. It could be fix with a thin plastic or ther material washer.
      2. Line roller. I don't know the diameter of ball bearing, but looks the same as for the knob, need to measure. Maybe somebody else can tell the size? Also there is a too big movement of the roller and they fix it by adding a washer from the rotor. I wouldn't do that, I am better planning to find the needed size washer.

    • @ifishcatfish
      @ifishcatfish  5 років тому

      i got similar feedback from other viewers. You might be able to do that, but that doesn't mean this is a saltwater reel. People splash their reels, sometimes sand gets in, and this reel has no protection against that. If you are a gentle user and then clean it religiously - you will get away it. But Most people will not. This reel does not have ANY protection, whatsoever! Not a single seal anywhere. If you say this is a saltwater reel, then every single reel on the market is saltwater reel, and this definition becomes meaningless. The Shimano Nasci, on the other side, has seals on all the right places, and can keep salt and sand out of the reel. Even the NASCI is supposed to be rinsed by the way, but it has protections.

    • @ifishcatfish
      @ifishcatfish  5 років тому +10

      i have the regular stradic and the CI4+. Those reels do not feel any better than the Sahara. I am really sensitive and anal about detail, but they don't. Something interesting is that even the resistance is not lower, even though the CI4+ has lighter rotor. Do u FEEL something when u reel the line that comes from the line roller bushing? I have never felt that. For saltwater reels they don't put a bearing on purpose, because when it seazes u can't clean it and lube it and keep going, like u can with a bushing. Daiwa LT reels have a bearing there, if u want alternatives, but I never felt that bearing was necessary. When daiwa puts that bearing on their high end reels, they actually mag seal it, because without a mag seal that bearing becomes a problem very fast.

    • @ifishcatfish
      @ifishcatfish  2 роки тому +2

      the gear ratio is not a function of the new generation, but the model of the reel. When the model name starts with XG, it will be x-tra high gear ratio. Just find a model without H or X. But probably you will have to buy such model from Japan, because here in USA everybody hates slow gear ratios

    The line roller being the first point of contact with water, it has the highest failure rate. For a fresh water angler the effects of water on the line roller bearing takes longer to produce that awful screeching sound while retrieving a lure. But for use in salt water that can happen very quickly. I actually prefer a bushing to a bearing in the line roller. Its easier to clean and maintain. With a bearing in the line roller you have to be prepared to replace bearings frequently. The thing is that there a sealed bearings available and i dont know why the manufacturers dont use them in critical places. The cost difference is well worth the reliability that they bring. For larger size reels where the load being handled is a lot higher, bearings on the line roller feel a lot better, but then again its back to sealing the bearings, and I haven’t yet found a reel that can keep water out of the line roller bearings no matter how much you pay for the reel.

    • @ifishcatfish
      @ifishcatfish  4 роки тому

      i have never had issues with a line roller on a freshwater reel. Just a little oil on the bushing in the winter. TSI 321. Anyway, the fishing reel market is as free as it gets, no distortions from government agencies. If this is the way it is, there must be a GOOD reason for everything. So many knock off brands on amazon - why don't they put cheap sealed bearings and steal the bread from Daiwa and Shimano? There is more to it than that obviously. Overall i am very happy with the quality of fishing equipment in the under 100$ range. Back in the day buying expensive reels made a real difference. I have very expensive reels now and i can tell you the differences between cheap and expensive daiwa and shimano reels is only in the margins.

    • @owenbosen4254
      @owenbosen4254 4 роки тому

      i_fish I see a lot a reels, so I know the kind of damage salt water can do to line roller bearings. They need replacement at least once a year even if they are maintained properly. I am a certified Shimano reel technician and also design and build rods. Probably the only guy in India doing these things. For my own saltwater reels i use Boca sealed bearings but for customers as per the service policy i just use Shimano parts.

    Quick question do you think I should get the sahara or nasci for river wading I might drop the reel in the water or get it wet do you think the sahara will be fine if it gets dunked in water or should I get the Nasci for the seals I’m only fishing freshwater

    • @ifishcatfish
      @ifishcatfish  4 роки тому

      If water intrusion is a concern, get the Nasci. Freshwater has very fine dust that sticks to the gears when it dries. I have dropped reels in lakes and they don't feel the same.
      Keep in mind even Nasci is not waterPROOF. I can withstand splash and rain, but if u drop it in the river for more than a few seconds - water will enter.

    • @ifishcatfish
      @ifishcatfish  4 роки тому

      Nasci and Sahara are both too heavy for wading, if u ask me. Perhaps get the Daiwa Fuego. It has similar seals to Nasci, but it is lighter. Not as strong, but lighter and just as smooth and cheaper. If wading for trout, go daiwa. If wading for salmon or bass or anything of that size - go nasci

      Alternative would be daiwa exceller, which is just as smooth but lighter. For uktralight fishing exceler is better but for pike shara has stronger gears and thicker body. Not that u need strong reel to fight a pike. They dont fight much. But still fight more than roach :). For this long rod u cant use light reel anyway or it will feel tip heavy. The Sedona is same reel without one bearing, but if you can replace the tephlone bushing from uper side of mineshafth and put them a bearing, you will have Sahara. Good video.
    The bad think about new Shimano reels is that they are without switching on/off, of the back stop rotation. I think from Shimano should turn back this.
    30 - 50 dolars for some rubber washers is too much.

    • @ifishcatfish
      @ifishcatfish  3 роки тому +1

      correct. But the difference between Sedona and Sahara in price is 10 bucks. Even for someone like me who has these bearings in stock anyway its not worth buying the cheaper reel and opening it and replacing the bushing. U don't have any money and now you no longer have a brand new reel. And Revros LT to Legalis LT is identical relationship

    • @ifishcatfish
      @ifishcatfish  6 років тому

      good observation and good analysis. If it makes u feel any better, i RARELY just spool the line and it gets perfect without spool washers. But i have so many reels and I have done it so many times that I have experience now. I always have cheap line on the bottom of the reel and only about 100 meters on top. When I am spooling the cheap line i pay attention to the line lay. If the line is heavy on top, look on the bottom. How big is the gap on the bottom? You have to be precise. If the gap is very small, use a thin washer. The washers provided are different thickness and you have to use a washer that is as thick as the gap on the bottom. You can manually fill the gap with the cheap line before u start spooling the good line on top with the washer correction. You will get a good eye with more experience, but even expensive reels need washers. Thanks for watching - see you around!

    Just serviced my 4000 SAHARA with a high density selicone based grease so now it's 100% water resistant... A bit tighter that before but stil smooth as soft serve ice cream... The HAGANE gears with the X-SHIP gear placement to me gives Shimano's midrange reels and even entry level I. E: the SEDONA the go ahead... I've a 3000 Daiwa Legalis, and even though it's super smooth I can still feel slight gear wear in it, where in Shimano it's like literally non-existent... I've a 1000 SEDONA which I have now for like a year and six months on one of my 5'6 ultra light rods / poles and opened it only once after like a year of saltwater fishing with it including my 4000 SAHARA which I have now for like a year and three months which I've serviced like 3 hours ago for the very first time, but take heed, my legalis I had or have rather for like say 8 months or so and I can begin to feel some slight gear wear in it as I said earlier on but this one I'll rather take to one of my trusted tackleshop staff to service coz I don't trust thus new Daiwa technology with all those clips and seals... Shimano in my opinion when it comes to entry level to midrange will outperform any Daiwa grinder in both fresh and or saltwater in the same class in the long run... Thanx for the great review, I'm looking forward to se more of your videos... Take care.

    • @ifishcatfish
      @ifishcatfish  6 років тому

      exactly. I dont know why more people dont talk about this. Here is another one, that I only recommend in the 2500 size - Daiwa Legalis LT! This is the best crappie/trout fishing in the entire daiwa LT line. The more expensive LT reels have more resistance to free spinning (because of added seals, that have friction). There is also Revros LT but this one lost a important driveshaft bearing and is not as smooth. Legalis LT is incredible reel that remained an undiscovered gem. However the bigger sizes suffer from too much flex in the frame, which besides the risk of braking also misaligns the gears under load. Go get it, you will appreciate it! Good luck and hope to see you around!

      MrIzmirli35 the high gear ratio does not feel so nice. More resistance when u turn the handle. If that doesnt bother you, yes, it is super smooth and you will like it. One thing to remember though is that the nasci , even though it is smooth like a stradic, its not sealed as good as a stradic. It still has some seals on main shaft and handle, but u will need to rinse it with freshwater from time to time, or salt will cstch up with you. Also, look at the weight. Nasci is very smooth reel, but its not light. I would pair it with ML rod, not UL.

Shimano should say that this is a Sahara, with a few seals, so people can decide if they want to spend extra $30 on seals. This is 15 year old Japanese line called Tornado. I bought a pack of 50 spools many years ago to get a low price. I still use it today.. it is my lucky line : ) , All my big carp were caught on this line

    The Sedona, $20 less than the Sahara, turns out to be very similar. I had a 4000 stored and unused I pulled out for my light kayak rod and was super surprised at how good that reel was - handles 20 lb snook no problem. As a result be been looking at the less expensive Shimano reels including the 2 year renewed here. I have far more expensive reels but frankly I might go with these classes of Shimano reels in the future. The line lay and drag smoothness is frankly better than my Van Stall, though of course I can’t just dunk it in the ocean is I drop it in the sand...! Might want to look at the Sedona for freshwater. I use it in saltwater and it holds up pretty well over the last 4 months fwiw.

      i tried sedonas in the shop and they feel just as smooth brand new but the construction inside is significantly different that these two reels and I think the Sahara is a better value. Thanks for dropping a comment, buddy, hope to see you around

    Great review! You are so right about the flexes in LT family! Ive caught a proper size of a queenfish with my fuego lt5000..but the flexes are really disturbing..thinking to buy ultegra 5000..what do you think of that? Thanks bro! Chill!

      habib rider if u know how many people asked me about the ultegra. I need to buy it or borrow from someone for a review. If big size is needed, i would rsther have the ultegra than anything LT, but this is just based on what i’ve heard about it, i have never touched that reel. U should biy it and send it to me for a couple of weeks :)

    Hey, today I bought a 3000 and a 4000 Nasci... nice reels.
    When I spin them very fast you can hear a little noise/Sound (scratching?), the 4000 is even louder, is this normal? Thx

    • @ifishcatfish
      @ifishcatfish  5 років тому +1

      if it is ever so slight, and is just audible - yes, its fine, all shimano reels have that for some reason. It is not a mechanical issue. If u fish you don't hear it. However i have had some daiwas where the noise was too pronounced and I returned them. Listen to your other reels. They all have very slight noise. If it is the same - its fine

    mate, you hit all the points people want to know. not just fanboy facts.
    looking at the specs. the nasci has hagane gears, the sahara doesnt.
    I played with a ci4 in store and it felt smooth but yet a helios felt almost the same. the nasci was amazingly smooth. has a some but minimal movement (something i check on all reels). if you try to rock the spool it shouldnt move on good reels.

    • @ifishcatfish
      @ifishcatfish  5 років тому +1

      no. The gears in the Sahara and Nasci and Sedona are exactly the same. If you order new gears from Shimano, they will have the same part number. The 3 of them are the same reel with super small differences, that i explain in the video.

    • @ifishcatfish
      @ifishcatfish  5 років тому

      The spool on reels up to 200$ will move. Only very expensive reels have spools supported by 2 bearings

    • @Ready_Fire_Aim
      @Ready_Fire_Aim 5 років тому

      That's very interesting, I got the nasci for smoothness and it was the cheapest with hagane gear, but yet your saying the Sahara is hagane? It's def not listed in the box/specs... That's interesting marketing

    • @ifishcatfish
      @ifishcatfish  5 років тому +1

      Not just gears. And not just sahara. Sedona sahara and nasci is one and the same reel, with a few small tweaks. Every part number of sedona and nasci is the same, and i proved it in the video, but u wuit watching too esrly :)

    • @Ready_Fire_Aim
      @Ready_Fire_Aim 5 років тому

      Nah I watched your video and noticed you said same parts, I just didn't hear you use the buzz word hagane lol. Thanks for your info mate
