I agree 100% with your opinion of the ultegra. I went to the tackle shop just last week with the intention of buying either a vanford or a stradic fl. After picking both of them up and then the ultegra just for the heck of it, I ended up leaving with the ultegra c5000xg. And about $75 still in my pocket!!!
Took my brand new Battle II 5000 for a spin yesterday for the very first time and I hooked a 20lb yellowtail using a Ugly Stik X2 (medium hard) rod ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxM68VkfsQhHaabDce1IwOCXuvumcpbZ_k . This combo was recommended on some website and it did not disappoint me. The reel is smooth, the drag click is pretty cool cause i think it adds to the excitement of fighting the fish, personally the drag is my favorite part. I use braid and 300 yards will fill the entire spool. This combo is my main setup from now on although I have to disclose I am new to fishing.
Im owning: Stradic FB 1000HG Stradic FB 2500HG Stradic FL C3000HG Ultegra C3000 Ultegra C3000HG Vanford C3000HG And now Im expanding my gear for perch/walleye fishing. 1k-2k models are too small for me. I do enjoy fishing with all reels but the vanford is most enjoyable with finesse fishing. I think im going for more vanfords and a vanquish. Thnx for your reviews mate
Nice reel Ultegra is a well respected name in Shimano's bicycle racing components. Next in quality to best in world Dura Ace When new even lesser quality Shimano components work as well but less durable and heavy. My Ultegra road bike is 38 yrs. and still working great. Looks like Shimano pays homage to the excellent Ultegra Cycling components which even pros use .
If I was in charge of quality control at any of these companies and I saw your videos, I would probably quit on the spot. Good eye and impeccable taste as always 👍🏼
Very great video. The Ultegra was the quietest out of the box including the Vanforth, and the Complex F4. The Complex was no better than the Vanforth as far as grating noise and feeling. Very disappointing. The Exsence BB C-3000 MHG was quieter than the Exsence CI4+ C3000MHG. I'm going to take the Complex XR apart and change the grease because when I added a few bearings and changed the grease on the Vanforth it improved significantly. The Stradic FL had the least grating noise of all. Have you every considered using synthetic oil instead of grease? Fresh water of course.
A very insightful review as always! It's good to see Shimano continuing to apply their higher-end technology to their lower-priced reels. I bought 2 Vanford 2000S and the one from a shop had the least resistance when turning the handle unlike. the one I bought online, was initially a bit disappointing, but it is breaking in.
i have to tell you, that's very often the case. These online deals are never the same as the ones you buy in store.. I bought a second vanford also, online, and had to return it. Way too much noise and resistance. I want to know if the reels that fail QA still get sold online as good reels
Picking up Ultegra 2021 and Daiwa Procyon AL LT this Christmas as my everyday reels. I was going to buy the new Shimano Sedona FJ, but decided to step up. I also bought the Daiwa fuego on Black Friday special for $55 at Scheel’s. …….so I think I am set for now……haven’t done any fishing for 20yrs
Thanks for such detailed reviews! I am putting together a light set-up for short range beach fishing to target fish no bigger than 5 lb. A friend recommended the Vanford but I am just experimenting a new type of fishing so I got a Legalis 2500 and paired it to a Tsunami Airwave 8’ (450 grams rod+reel). The Legalis It is definitely unbeatable at its price!
Thanks for the review. Got my girlfriend a vanford last year and it definitely has a grinding sound to it also. Good point about changing knob bushing to bearings. I only change out if it moves. Mostly change T knobs to I knobs in 3000 size reels. Complex XR review next!
This is why the Stradic FL was such a big deal, it's internals were ALL premium parts straight from the Stella FJ, which had NEVER been done before. Stradics always had cheaper almost "rip offs" of the parts put into the Japanese reels not even close to those actual high end parts themselves, but the Stradic FL changed that and that was simply astonishing! The Stella FJ, Vanquish FB, Stradic FL, Ultegra FC, have the same main and pinion gear 😂, the same oscillation gear and idle gears 😂, the same clutch, the same shaft and supports (bar Stella), etc, there is a difference in coatings however with a thin brass coating on the gear of the Stella, black alumite coating on the reels Stradic and below and no coating just the bare gear itself in the Vanquish/Twinpower /Exsence, as well as a slightly more slippery coating on the worm and shaft from TP and up, but they are still exactly the same actual parts. What they focused on instead is tolerance and quality, the higher you go in price, the higher quality the frame/rotor/handle etc, and better/tighter the tolerances become, even how the reels are assembled becomes cleaner and more precise, so although parts are shared the difference is felt, but damn what incredible value.
Yeah a 200$ shimano feels similar to 700$ but for daiwa its like the other way around. From the legalis and up the feeling of the reels actually get worse (Caldia MQ, Fuego) until you get to the Luvias and Exist.
@@danielwutfisho I disagree, a $200 Shimano doesn't feel like a $700 Shimano, they share many internal parts but they focus more on tolerances, quality of the major parts (frame rotor handle spool etc) and overall fit and finish, they make them feel as different as possible. A $200 Shimano is a Stradic, a Stradic does NOT feel like a Stella, it just shares some of its internals... And I do NOT agree with that at all 😂, a Legalis feels cheaper than the next tier above, unless you ONLY value perceived resistance and literally nothing else haha. The Fuego is just a sealed Legalis so yes it's tighter to spin but most people don't mind, and Ballistic MQ definitely feels better than a Fuego, Ballistic feels more rigid, is significantly more powerful, has a more stable drag, and has MUCH better tolerances. I don't think it's any "smoother" to be honest neither of them are very smooth, but they don't feel the same and in my hands the Ballistic definitely feels better. Ballistic also feels more fluid than the Legalis/Exceller/Fuego, which can feel bumpy at times and just overall of a lesser quality. But you may have a different experience than me and I know how horrible quality control is with fishing reels so I won't judge too much, if you grab 10 Stella's a couple of them will feel worse than a Legalis 😂, buying reels these days is a lucky dip.
@@cozab5487 wow what a insightful take, recently ive been obsessing over fishing reels and I do agree that I was kind of generalizing when I made that statement. I just feel like in terms of pure perceived smoothness to me the legalis felt pre amazing for the price. Also the ultegra felt pretty damn good but the tolerances would obviously differ by alot compared to a Twinpower. I like that you mentioned the fluidity of the Monocoque reels as well, I own plenty of them and I know what you are talking about
@@danielwutfisho Yea man, so many factors make a good reel in my opinion, smoothness in the hand is one thing and the Legalis is pretty smooth spinning at home, but under load in actual fishing is different all together, and in actual fishing I don't think a Legalis is as good as a Caldia or Ballistic, but I can see how the Legalis family would win in pure smoothness in store. I find the Caldia for whatever reason just doesn't have the smoothest feel in hand, but it definitely has less "bumps" in its retrieve in actual fishing and has that more fluid tighter feel and the drag is superb, it feels like it could catch a big fish, where as to me the Legalis feels like it would break on something large? I guess we just look for different things my man, and if by luck your Legalis is extra smooth and your Caldias are so so then I can definitely see where you're coming from! Again, I've had Stella FK's that feel like crap😂, and Twinpower FD's, AND XD's, and Certates, and Caldias, and Vanfords, the list goes on hahaha, half of it is pure luck if you get a good example or not, so best believe if you get a very good example of your next reel, just know you'll have a nicer feeling reel than 20 people that just took order of a Stella FK 😂.
I've heard the Ultegra called a "workhorse" reel. It's nothing you'd pull out for an epic fishing trip, but it gets the job done at the end of the day.
i would pull it for an epic trip. Feels just as good as all other expensive reels as it has the same gears. Just the body is heavy. But if u have a cheap rod, your rod is heavy too so it doesn't matter. If u have rod under $200, this reel is as good as it gets
Out of 25 minutes I hear: Legalis is the best value reel and Ultegra is not a bad step up if you don't mind the appearance. Is this a fair summary, or did I miss something?
They are both value but ur decision depends on how much u care for things like drag sound, color etc.. Also 140$ is not exactly cheap for everyone. Definitely not for people outside of US
How to remove the sandy grinding feel? Heard that you said in other videos, the sandy grinding feel can’t be removed even you added all those expensive bearings. I’m thinking of moving to Daiwa, after expecting the Vanford shall be a good upgrade from those cheaper shimano and I get one Vanford, however it doesn’t, Ultegra don’t feel the sanding grinding feel but Vanford does. Or shall I burn my pocket a big hole buying the Vanquish 2023 which spending 1000 ringgit malaysia to remove the feel where if it is worth it.
I changed the spools of my old Shimano rarenium 1000 fa with the shallow spool of a Sahara 2000s because the rarenium spool is much to deep. I although changed the drag clicker and it fits perfactly in function & performance. I did this because of the lite rotation what i love on the old rarenium fa and of course the low line retreave.
Now my rarenium is like a soare ci4😅👌 you talked often that the lite rotation can be a reason of heavier rotor and handle. In this case its the fact i think. Cheers
1 year later.. i bought another ultegra love it still . :) next to my twinpower 2500 i can say the feeling is very like when reeling it :) do you know if the utegra can have a sustain or vanford reel handle ? i have a 50 mm sustain reelhandle to spare
@i_fish I received an ultegra fc1000, there is some very noticeable friction noise while turning the reel even at medium speed. Overall the reel is smooth, but I can feel a bit of friction also. Do you know if that could be a default on this specific one that a i received or normal on the ultegra ? I dont know if i should return it. Thanks in advance !
Is the drag clicker from Stradic/Vanford interchangable with Ultegra reels and if so do you think it is worth doing for Ultegra owners? Also it would be good to see a video showing what areas to grease / oil for maintenance especially for salt water use
no, it is not interchangeable. I recommend keeping the reels clean. Then they don't need maintenance. If dirt gets in.. usually its irreparable. I don't do regular maintenance.
@@ifishcatfish yeah great advice. I was thinking more in terms of preventative maintenance such as applying grease under spool, roller bearing and other tips to keep things from seizing / rusting.
@@fishinbite grease under the spool is no good. It just makes dust stick to it. Line roller can be opened up once a year, just wipe clean and i drop the bearing in a cap full of engine oil and let it sit, and then put it back
Another great review. I agree- the color of the Sahara is pitiful. Such a ugly gray color. I had to get rid of the ones i had because i couldn't stand looking at them. I am waiting for daiwa to bring the new Exceler to the US market. From what i have seen, its a nice looking reel. Are you going to do a review on the shimano complex? Too many reels, so little time.
First let me start by saying: thank you, you’re videos are such a great reference for anyone wanting to understand ultra light gear. I’ve watched so many of your videos lately and enjoyed each and everyone. I have two questions for you; -I noticed your reels tend to be around the size 2000. How did you come to chose that size? - In terms of value for money, the Nasci FC, Ultegra FC and the Vanford. In what order would you rate them? Thanks again :-)
thanks for the kinds words and for watching my videos! Size 2000 is my favorite size for fishing monofilament lines. The body is 1000 size, but the spool is 2mm larger in diameter, which helps a little keep the line straighter. You know when u have very tiny spools and use monofilament lines, they tend to get curly and then u have memory issues. If i fished braid i would prefer 1000 size, as curly line is not a problem for braid. Honestly, lately the lines are so thin, that 1000 size is not a problem even for monofilament line, if it is 0.12 mm. That said, very often only one of the two sizes is available in the low gear ratio. So I don't have a choice. It is really not a big deal, choosing between 1000 and 2000 size, its the same reel really. As for Value, Ultegra is #1, Nasci #2, and Vanford 3. But if you can afford Vanford, you should get the Vanford, even though u pay a lot more than Ultegra, and get very little more than Ultegra. Its just so damn light, and the drag clicker is awesome
@@ifishcatfish thanks for the quick reply, I actually wanted the vanford for the very same reason but the price is crippling and the 2000 is only available in HG. Most of the fishing I do is in salt water and often on my tiny skiff looking for larger fish. But fishing from shore usually catches me fish that would be much more fun to catch on lighter gear. Size wise I have a dilemma, I prefer a size 1000 but as it is I need to cast at least 40m out to catch anything most of the time and that would be half my braid out.. so if I do hook onto something that pulls drag then I’d have very little line to fight with. That’s why I decided to go a 2000 and it appears, most likely the ultegra c2000s FC. Now I’m considering a travel rod to match it. This set up would of course be exclusively for shorter casting in the North of Oman where I live. Thanks again for all the knowledge you’re sharing.
unfortunately i don't have a good recommendation. I use some exotic brands from japan but they don't seem to make a huge difference. I recommend but something from Daiwa or Shimano, whatever it is, and don't worry about it, because even expensive stuff doesn't make that huge of a difference. Just don't use cal's grease please : )
@@ifishcatfish yes, I bought and received both 2500 speeds available and both had T knobs, irked me. Thank goodness I can still hug my Vanquish at night :)
Are the 1000 and 2000 Ultegra sizes the exact same reel except for the spool? None of the stores near me in the East Coast had a 2000 size so I didn't know it existed and bought the 1000. Could I buy a spare 2000 spool and put it on the 1000 body and have a 2000 reel?
Not sure if this happened to you or others but my vanford 1000 roller bearing actually started grinding within a month use. Didn't have this happen to me with my fl which has been used for a year now. Also I've notice that scratching noise on all the stradics as well, which I probably just assume is normal now. Picked up a daiwa tatula and it had it as well. Not sure what it is but apparently daiwa has it too.
I have several very old Tatulas, and none of them have it. Also I have never heard that about the Tatulas.. you may have gotten a bad apple with the tatula. As for Line Roller Bearing - this is one place where a 'cheap chinese ABEC7 bearing' would work just fine. Dont be afraid to replace that one. Readily available and very cheap
@@ifishcatfish Good to know. Also how are you liking that daiwa braid? I had 20lb and put it to hard use against white bass and sheepheads. What I've noticed with it is that the texture started feeling like an x4 braid.
hi Victor, how about SHIMANO STRADIC FM c2000fm? it is light, strong. but how it is about inertia and resistance when you start reeling? thinking about uprgraid, but a bit stronger
FM? I thought it was FL. Is there FM too now? The FL is aluminum and too heavy. The kastking reel from my last video is 50 grams lighter! Think about that..
The Luvias is much lighter, and no free play, and has a metal drag clicker and I would say feel quite a bit more expensive. But as far as smoothness.. i can't tell which reel is smoother
@@ifishcatfish so its like if you want something that feels nicer, better tolerance and refinement then pay extra but this reel at this price point can get the job done and is very good already. Now this gives me a tougher decision to make if i should get this or the Daiwa Procyon AL.
its kind of late for that... its a 4 year old model.. Also it has aluminum frame, which is more for bass fishing, not for ultralight fishing. It just adds weight for nothing, as u don't need strength
Minute 8.49 - "They are exactly the same gears you will find on the Twinpower" You sir, are wrong. In the Ultegra (and Stradic), the gearing for 78, 80 & 82 are made of plastic whereas for the Twinpower, its made of metal.
It was obvious i was talking about the main gear and pinion. I already made speculations that in several videos that the difference in feel and the reason why the Vanford has this sandy feel is probably because of the different oscillation idlers. Not only i wasn't wrong, but after your comment I feel vindicated. Now if u know so much, tell me why the Vanford has the sandy feel, but the Ultegra doesn't, if they both have plastic idlers. Are the plastic idlers different?
@@ifishcatfish Firstly, you mentioned "Same gears" and obviously both the pinion and main gears are pretty similar in those reels. I didnt claim i "know so much". That was purely your assumption and seem like you got butthurt from my comment. Also, the "sandy feel" is SUBJECTIVE and so far most reviewers and users arent getting such issues so when you're trying to ask me to justify WHAT YOU FEEL you know i wouldnt be able to. Or probably you do not know, proving again how butthurt you are. Grow up.
@@cozab5487 thank you. So why does the Vanford and the old Stradics have this sandy gear feel, but the Ultegra and the Twinpower dont? I have been trying to figure that for the longest time

can you do a tutorial showing how you put line your reels, how do get the line lay proportion top to bottom, because when i put line on my reel sometimes the line will bunch to top and tapering down to the spool sometime the line will bunch down and tapering to the top of the spool, i genuinely curious to know, please and thanks
Daiwa and Shimano sell many oils and I find all oils OK. It is hard to tell which oil is better. Not like grease. You put thick grease and reel doesn't want to spin. But there are no thick oils... not that thick anyway.. Now if you talk about BAITCASTING REEL, where the spool spins with 5000 revs per minute, that is very different, and you need very thin oil there. But inside a spinning reel nothing spins fast and all oils are OK
Not all Chinese bearings are shit. Only those that cost $3 for 10 pieces. For example, there are Fushi bearings which cost a little more than $10 for 10 pieces and they are really high-quality. Some of my reels work on SMR Japanese bearings and some on Fushi and I don't feel the difference...they do not make noise and do not whistle. But of course I put Fushi in budget reels up to $150. After that price I put japanese but just to have Feng Shui)))
I bought over a dozen Chinese reels on Aliexpress and you are right, they work great! Especially the Piscifun reels that I bought for 5 of my rods as well as the rods that I put on my nephews' and nieces' rods! They are awesome for the money! However, since I have bought 4 new surf rods (9' to 11') I think for these larger rods I better buy some more expensive reels to go with them since I don't feel like spending $150 -$250 on rods only to put a $45 Chinese reels on them. Plus, I look for reels that give me longer casting distance. But for regular bass, perch, panfish, and trout fishing you can't go wrong with a Piscifun, Sougayilang, and Tsurinoya reels! I own 11 of these reels and I am astonished at their quality compared to the reels that you normally get that are priced at 4-7 times higher at an American store! Speaking of which, as I was writing this post and checked Aliexpress to learn how to spell "Sougayilang" I came upon a couple of reels listed on Aliexpress that claimed to have the same components as the new Ultegra and they look identical to the Ultegra as well! I also see 4 reels that feature long cast spools like the ones that the Shimano Ultegra Ci4+ XTC reels have! I just might skip paying the high prices of these Japanese and American reels and get these inexpensive Chinese reels instead! Or I might buy a Shimano Ultegra and get one that looks like it on Aliexpress to do a comparison to see if they are really similar or not in quality. Based on my previous purchases I think I could get a reel similar in quality to the Ultegra at a fraction of the price!
they are almost the same reel. The Stradic has aluminum frame and the high end drag clicker. Ultegra has plastic frame and cheaper drag clicker. But gears and bearings and seals are all the same. Both feel great
I don’t know how to describe this property. You sound so much like an arsehole yet you are so loveable as a human being, especially for your honest views/review. Very good video and I appreciate your knowledge and honesty.
oh. I think Shimano calls them CRB - corrosion resistant bearings. I dont know but the reel is sealed and u have decent protection. Seal is more important than CRB. If u get salt or dirt inside, the reel is pretty much screwed regardless of the bearings. Your gears will feel like sh1t
Yes, It is S A-RB x 5. Check official website. 汎用スピニングリール仕様一覧(List of general-purpose spinning reel specifications) アルテグラ(Ultegra) 総ベアリング数(Ball Bearing Number) : Total 5 +1 for Anti Reverse roller bearing, aka clutch bearing.
I disagree with the resistance on the vanford! Perhaps you got a bad reel. I own 2 shimano vanford 2500hg and 1 ultegra and the vanford is farrrrrrr smoother. I would compare the ultegra to a stradic but the vanford is way smoother!!!
i am talking about ultralight reels though. I have a 2500 Vanford and it feels great. In the smallest size u always FEEL more issues.. Especially the Vanfords that we buy from Japan (to get the nice low gear ratio) almost half the time come with some issues.
@ifishcatfish I understand now my apologies. They are both great reels. I'm glad I understand, I almost purchased the 2000s vanford glad I didn't. Keep the videos coming I'm looking foward to them!

I think my best bet is the Vanford, even though it has red which does not quite match :/ Do you have any suggestions?
I think the old Daiwa Presso LTD will look nice there with the brown and orange accents, but its too expensive for that rod. Also the rod doesn't need such a light reel. Daiwa Theory would look nice but its not worth buying such an old reel now. Daiwa Caldia that I just reviewed would look nice but my reel was disappointing. Maybe I had bad luck. Do not order from Digitaka.. If you get a smooth 2021 Caldia you should be fine
@@ifishcatfish I feel like the Caldia is not the best bang for the buck, especially when the vanford exists, but it just does not match as well. I am so conflicted haha, there has to be another option. Maybe the shimano sustain?
There is no other option, if u care about colors. Check my tabletop videos of the caldia and the Carabus extreme. I caught some good trout with that combo and it was a blast.
Pfleuger President is one of the worst reels I have ever owned! Both reels that I owned are completely worthless because the handle screw caps kept on falling off and I constantly have to tighten them up whenever I used the reels to keep them from falling off! So one day I took my nephews and nieces fishing and about 4 hours later both handle screw caps on my reels fell off and I didn't know it until I got home! I only used those two reels for about two months and now I just let them sit in my garage for parts just in case I bumped into another Pfleuger President reel in a garage sale or something with its handle screw cap still attached! About a year later I went to a Dick's Sporting Goods store and it had three Pfleuger President reels on display for people to try them out and one of the first things I noticed about all three of those reels is that their handle screw caps were all missing! Apparently, other people were having the same problem with the Pfleuger President's handle screw caps falling off as well! They came back to the store and stole all of the handle screw caps on the reels that were on display! Let me tell you, the only worse reel that I have ever bought was a Lew's spinning reel that I have forgotten the name of since I only used it once and pretty much threw it away! The problem with that reel was that it had absolutely no drag whatsoever! The drag setting for that reel was either on or off and that's it! You either turn it on where it is so loose that even the weight of a large paper clip would peel drag or you could tighten it up, but even if you tighten it up to the max with a pair of pliers the drag could only stop a 4 inch bluegill from pulling off drag! In order to fish with that reel you have to reel backwards when a fish pulls or else you risked having your line or rod snap! After having a couple of fish snapping my line because I wasn't good with back-reeling I stopped using that reel! I have bought 15 reels since then from Aliexpress and some of the reels that I bought were 5 times cheaper than that Lew's reel and they all work way better than that Lew's reel! So, the idea that you get what you pay for isn't always true! You actually get a lot higher quality reels from Aliexpress than the reels you pay 3-5 times as much at Walmart! Seriously!
legalis nor fuego can go against ultegra. sadly shimano is heavy. im pretty sure shimano dont go lighter on purpose. shimano and daiwa benefiting having each other compete i guess. otherwise how cannot shimano find a light material..

@@stormace343 yes, bigger handle will just screw your gears. I don't want to repeat everything i already said though. You mistake is buying XG model. MQ is also sht, it doesn't do nothing, Shimano still has better gears and lighter reels. If MQ was something real, why can't daiwa beat the Vanquish so many years already? Sell the XG, and buy a low gear ratio Shimano, something like the Stradic FL or Twinpower, if u can afford that, in low gear ratio, and you will SEE for first time in ur life what torque is.

After about an hour I had to give his rod and reel back to him because my arms and shoulders felt fatigue from using a heavy-ass rod and reel set up and I didn't have any lures that were heavy enough for me to throw with that set up that could give me any kind of casting distance! The only way I would ever consider buying a Penn Spinfisher reel or any other of Penn's sealed reels is if I use the reel specifically for chunking baits and I intend to let the rod and reel sit on a rod holder! I don't think I would consider buying a Penn reel simply because it is hard to fish with when you fish with a lure since the weight of the reel limits my ability to work with the rod and the lure the way that I want to work it. I would rather fish with a lighter reel that isn't made for saltwater than a sealed Penn reel. Penn reels might be built like a tank, but boy do they feel like it on my arms and shoulders as well!
ugly color! agreed most companies made their low end products ugly to push higher end products daiwa freams LT is in the same price range, it is the cheapest model that has megseal which is also a very good choice the freams is sliver to gary color , not bad
but the freams has the cheaper zinc gears, not the aluminum gears of the Tatula family. Also, magseal is a nuissance in freshwater. Only adds resistance and no benefit.
@@ifishcatfish for me salt water user , sealing is so important, not sure how shimano seal compare with daiwa one , ultegra is one of the best choices for the money now on the market that's why i am checking reviews on youtube
stradic ci4 another level of better than vanford.. vanford is garbage.. i hate mine,.,' absolutly the worst shimano reel i ever had.. feels like its gonna crash down and brak for small blade bats around 10 grams.. the handle play is sick ..crap ! dont buy vanford its totally crap and plastic as daiwa fuegio
@cpunktc81 I love both of mine. My 1000 ended up having gritty gears, I sent back to Shimano at 12 months old & they serviced under warranty. Very smooth now.
I've got 2 Vanfords in 1000 and 3000 sizes. Never had a problem with grinding noises or resistance. All reels make a slight noise as there are moving parts when you turn the handle. You only hear this in a quiet environment. Do we fish in such environments like our bedroom? This is just another nitpicking video for the vegans of the fishing world. Spend more time fishing, less time worrying about gear. I've got all this high end shit in 1000-20000 reels. This bloke just has a bunch of small reels because he fishes in freshwater. Try the saltwater game where the real fish are, then talk about gear
I want to buy your Vanford 1000 that does not have grinding gears. I have seen more than 10 of them already, and every single one has a slight sandy feel of the gears. If you Vanford has smooth gears, i will pay you full MSRP even if its used. Email me if interested. As for making review without fishing in saltwater - sorry, i'm not gona close my channel just because I live in Chicago and have no salt water. But I myself watch lots of saltwater channels and there is no shortage of them, so you should just watch those, and never come back.
@@ifishcatfish Regardless of the grease you change, there will always be resistance and noise from reels. Ive been servicing my own reels for decades now, longer than youve probably fished. Your channel promotes anal nitpicking over pointless reasons why one should buy this or another, or why you personally prefer one reel to the other. When it comes down to fishing, im more concerned about how reels handle under load such as body flex, drag smoothness and durability. Picking up a reel and just turning it without actually having a decent fish on it is like judging a car without driving it. Young inexperienced fishermen are doomed watching your naivety on show. Like I said, because you only fish freshwater, you have no idea of the demands of the saltwater environment. When you actually catch a decent fish, then talk. While others are pulling in Marlin, Swordfish, tuna, GT, Kingfish, Wahoo, Spanish Mack, Cobia etc, youre limited to what? Carp? Hahhahaha. The serious guys dont worry about changing grease in a reel to apparently make it smoother. Thats for the vegans of the fishing world like you. Go out there, dont use living in Chicago as an excuse for not being able to go on a saltwater fishing trip. Until you handle some big fish, youre just limited to worrying about the futile factors that make a good spinning reel. Glad to educate you son
@@ifishcatfish Im happy for you. Well done staying limited, boring and monotonous. Youll never progress as a fisherman doing the same shit so your opinions bear no significance to those who actually place such reels on testing pressures. I see youve got no rebuttal on the more salient factors of a quality reel regarding body flex, drag performance or durability under load. I sum it down to a lack of fishing experience. Keep changing your grease son! Hahaha

This combo is my main setup from now on although I have to disclose I am new to fishing.

what about the new Legalis review, coming out next week : )
@@ifishcatfish I stand corrected
Nice reel Ultegra is a well respected name in Shimano's bicycle racing components. Next in quality to best in world Dura Ace When new even lesser quality Shimano components work as well but less durable and heavy. My Ultegra road bike is 38 yrs. and still working great. Looks like Shimano pays homage to the excellent Ultegra Cycling components which even pros use .
Sane here. Ultegra on my bikes. Excellent model name for a equivalent reel and price point.
If I was in charge of quality control at any of these companies and I saw your videos, I would probably quit on the spot. Good eye and impeccable taste as always 👍🏼
Strong
Been waiting for this one!!
Fresh water of course.
no, i am not ready for oil. It will be gone in 5 min
hows the complex now? and how are they after long use? including the ultegra
Thank you for delivering after a long day at work
thats a solid comment! haha : )
I bought a daiwa fuego online, I found big resistance when there is a lure on the line, no resistance with no lure, do you know where the problem is?
Picking up Ultegra 2021 and Daiwa Procyon AL LT this Christmas as my everyday reels. I was going to buy the new Shimano Sedona FJ, but decided to step up. I also bought the Daiwa fuego on Black Friday special for $55 at Scheel’s. …….so I think I am set for now……haven’t done any fishing for 20yrs
this is a good upgrade to sedona!
The Legalis It is definitely unbeatable at its price!
it is but be careful because it doesn't have any seals.
Nice, thanks for the awesome review! Will make sure to pick one up. I already wanted to get one but decided to wait for your review :))
As long as you find a good rod for that color - you can't beat it : )
Can't wait for the complex review!
Thanks for the review. Got my girlfriend a vanford last year and it definitely has a grinding sound to it also. Good point about changing knob bushing to bearings. I only change out if it moves. Mostly change T knobs to I knobs in 3000 size reels. Complex XR review next!
Legalis next, then complex xr
@@ifishcatfish please remember I don’t get my rod till the end of Aug, so anytime till then welcome to play with reel!
Good information here! Thanks
Is this considered a shallow spool?? Thank you for your fabulous reviews!!

Victor have ever been able to fix or stop that sandy feel in a new spinning reel? I don't like it at all either. Thanks for the video.
No. It doesnt go away with time. However the resistance on the luvias seems to be lower now
I've heard the Ultegra called a "workhorse" reel.
Definitely not for people outside of US
Very informative

Haha. I like your blatant words on tackle modifier. 🤣
Hi VICTOR great video I have a question please that Give me some advice for steelhead Real Shimano 2500 or bigger size?
This one is great, the new Sahara is also great, if you want cheaper but a little heavier..
Sul 5000 la bobina ha lo stesso sistema? Sembra un Sienna
What a great video! Thank you for the education.
Thank u sir. I hope to see u around
U cant remove the feel. Sorry.
I changed the spools of my old Shimano rarenium 1000 fa with the shallow spool of a Sahara 2000s because the rarenium spool is much to deep. I although changed the drag clicker and it fits perfactly in function & performance. I did this because of the lite rotation what i love on the old rarenium fa and of course the low line retreave.
the new Sahara has pretty light rotation too..

If its just noise, thats normal. Not every reel is silent. But on the water u will never hear that noise. If u feel physical hit, then return it
@@ifishcatfish it's mostly the noise indeed. Thanks ;) I'll keep it then
Is the drag clicker from Stradic/Vanford interchangable with Ultegra reels and if so do you think it is worth doing for Ultegra owners?

Too many reels, so little time.
yes, Legalis first, then the Complex XR. Exceller had a new version in 2020. Did you see yet another new version? I havent seen it..
I’ve been more impressed with the smoothness and refinement of Daiwa reels over Shimano. Even the lower end Daiwa reels are much more refined.
I will agree that Daiwa legalist is smoother than the $230 Vanford. This is much better than the vanford in terms of smoothness though.. So it depends
You make very good reviews, even without disassembling the reels... :D
Can you make review for Shimano Stradic FL ?
i dont have that reel, and don't plan on buying it because it is aluminum and will be too heavy for me.
First let me start by saying: thank you, you’re videos are such a great reference for anyone wanting to understand ultra light gear.
I’ve watched so many of your videos lately and enjoyed each and everyone.
I have two questions for you;
-I noticed your reels tend to be around the size 2000.
Need your opinion victor which one is better between ultegra and Exsence BB ? Going to get the 3000 model for Superlight shore jigging
about the same.. i would get the ultegra, but just because its cheaper..
@@ifishcatfish Thanks very much Victor 👍
How is the Ultegra compared to the Stradic FL?
Feels just as good, but stradic has more bells and whistles. More bearings, aluminum frame, nicer drag clicker. For saltwater i would go FL for sure
Ultegra or stradic fl which do you think is the better bang for buck
Ultegra for ultralight fishing, stradic for bass fishing or sizes 3000 and over
I like the looks better on the Ultegra. The Question should be is the Vanford worth 20-25 % more cost ?
if you have $300 rod, then YES. If you have a rod that costs $150 or less, then NO. In the middle will be hard to tell.

What would be your recommendation on gear grease for the sahara/ultegra 1000?
unfortunately i don't have a good recommendation.

Wouldn't the USA 1000 size ultegra be better than the jdm shallow 2000?
Are the 1000 and 2000 Ultegra sizes the exact same reel except for the spool? None of the stores near me in the East Coast had a 2000 size so I didn't know it existed and bought the 1000. Could I buy a spare 2000 spool and put it on the 1000 body and have a 2000 reel?
Yes
I just got a brand new Ultegra 2000s. The reel is much louder than my Ultegra 1000 and 3000. Any ideas?
its not a defect, just how some of them are assembled. This reel is not assembled in Japan. I bet u 100$ u will never hear that on the water
It feels like made of paper, but ive never broken that line, on fish or a snag
hi Victor, how about SHIMANO STRADIC FM c2000fm? it is light, strong. but how it is about inertia and resistance when you start reeling? thinking about uprgraid, but a bit stronger
FM? I thought it was FL. Is there FM too now? The FL is aluminum and too heavy. The kastking reel from my last video is 50 grams lighter! Think about that..
Now im currious the the difference in smoothness between the Luvias and this reel
I want to get the penn battle III over the ultegra even though its much heavier simply because it looks SO much better...
I agree. Thats why i will be selling this reel, even though it is perfect
please do a review on stradic FL series. Thanks
its kind of late for that... its a 4 year old model.. Also it has aluminum frame, which is more for bass fishing, not for ultralight fishing. It just adds weight for nothing, as u don't need strength
Minute 8.49 - "They are exactly the same gears you will find on the Twinpower"
You sir, are wrong.
Grow up.

@@ifishcatfish It really was deliberate! I need help, I got a moonshine rambler 6'6 medium light rod and I just dont know what reel to put on it. Nothing seems quite right but I want something good.
@@ifishcatfish I said nothing about smoothness, just appearance
Oh.. i see now :). Yeah, pfluegers do look like that :)
Lmao pflueger🤣
Seriously!
legalis nor fuego can go against ultegra. sadly shimano is heavy. im pretty sure shimano dont go lighter on purpose. shimano and daiwa benefiting having each other compete i guess.

bigger gear helps i guess. so for that maybe mq series from daiwa? or did you have any chance of looking okuma inspira isx gear size, maybe that reel. cheers
@@stormace343 yes, bigger handle will just screw your gears. I don't want to repeat everything i already said though. You mistake is buying XG model. XG is terrible sh1t that you should never ever buy ever for any circumstances. Buy the base model with 5.0 gear ratio, and low line retrieve speed, and that is the only thing that matters.

@@ifishcatfish @i_fish My friend lent me his Penn rod and reel last month because he wanted to fish with my new Tsunami rod and reel that I had just bought. Let me tell you his 12' Penn Prevail rod and Penn Spinfisher VI reel must of weighed a ton because it felt like it! The problem wasn't his rod since it was quite light, the problem was his reel! It weighed over 2 pounds! I couldn't cast any lure that wasn't at least 3.5 ounces because the rod was quite stiff and the reel is made to cast super large lures and sinkers!
Penn reels might be built like a tank, but boy do they feel like it on my arms and shoulders as well!
ugly color! agreed
most companies made their low end products ugly to push higher end products
