    Very good! I wish there was more content about this. I need to buy 2 run and gun setups, on for my son and one for me. He wants a saddle so my thought is buy a stand so between the both of us we should cover 100% of the huntable trees. PS your other videos have helped show my son I’m not the only one that scouts like I do. Keep up the great videos!

      @@RelentlessSportsman corey I'm looking for a hang on stand that I can use for mobile run and gun hunting that has a seat with backrest. I have no desire to get a hang on with a seat with no backrest. Are there any hang ons out there that have a seat with backrest that would work well for mobile hunting? The ones I've seen so far look too bulky or cumbersome to pack in and out of the woods each hunt like the millennium m150. PLEASE HELP

    I agree with just about everything you said. A saddle is 100% not the end all. I use every type of stand available to me, climbing, ladder, hang on, box, ground blind and yes a saddle. They are all tools in my toolbox and each one excels in different hunting scenarios and helps to put the odds in my favor. Great video.

    I’ve seen a lot about saddles being the end all be all. I will admit it has been tempting after lugging my climber around on public this season with no success. I will be adding a cushion with back support as a lighter weight option hunting from the ground. I just can’t justify the cost of a good saddle and cold weather limitations, especially in MN.

    This season I branched out from hang on to saddle. I had a great experience but I was only up for a couple hours and up 25ft for Rifle. I could get away with both scent and motion. Next year I need to stay out all day long and I think I'm gonna have to go back to hang on for that reason.
    This year my son was on a hang on in front and I was in a saddle on the other side of the pine. For a father son set up it was awesome.
    Keep experimenting and staying open minded.

    You gotta be careful thinking saddles are the cure all!!!! Saddles one are a total different shooting experience with a bow!!!!! I had all kinds of issues getting proper tech at first. A bunch of practice and now it’s comfortable. A stand everyone can shoot out of fairly quickly!!!! As far as lighter that’s marginal really. The weight compared to a midrange loc on is only a few pounds and that weight can be distributed so well in a really good pack. The setup for me is easier with a stand since a saddle has more “stuff” needed to be setup. Stands have bow hangers that can be attached to stand, backpack and gear hangers also can be hung of stand too. Saddles you have to have separate things for this. Saddles can be more comfortable once adjusted correctly for me anyways with a back band and tethers/bridges setup right. Now for me saddle 100% of the time while gun hunting and I can’t find a draw back to it. For bow hunting saddle with compound, loc on with trad bow. I find myself using my loc on in hybrid mode most now. I’ve hung my go to climber in the garage and don’t have a real use for it anymore. So limited in trees with it and both saddles and small loc ons trees are almost unlimited especially in hybrid mode I haven’t found one I can’t make work yet within reason. Now all that being said this is using a “small/micro” loc on like an XOP retrograde, LWCG .5/.75, Novix Helo or for me a modified LocOn WindWalker. If your using a standard sized loc on stand well walking in and out is gonna be less convenient. Then if saddle is what you want Practice, Practice, Practice!!!!!!

    I like it man! I got a saddle setup this year to be mobile but also a light weight hang on. They are tools for the job. Some tools do better in some situations than others. I love that you’re telling all about both!

    I agree with 80% of what you said. You make alot of good points in this video. There are a few myths about hunting in trees . From my experience and research some of your opinion are not true.
    Here's one myth I think we can both agree on you can not hunt in type of tree that's simpley not possible or practical with tree saddle or hang on. Heres my biggest disagreement with you, one of the advantage of tree saddles hunting in trees with limbs. The hunting public shows videos of them hunting in trees with limbs on it . From my own personal experience hunted in trees with limbs on it. I watch youtube videos on how to hunt in tiny trees with limbs on it. The other big advantage in saddle hunting is hunting trees that are slanted. I can send you videos to back this up it's all over youtube. Hunting in slanted trees and trees with limbs on is not always going to be comfortable in a tree Saddle that's a fact. When your hunting in difficult trees like slanted trees or trees with limbs on it your probably not going to be able shoot 360 degrees around the tree your shot selection will be more limited. In the end you diffently have more options choosing a tree when using a tree saddle compared to hang on stand.
    There are 2 positions in tree Saddle hunting leaning and sitting. If your leaning yes you're more likely to be sighted. If your sitting less likely to be sighted compared to hang on stand. You can move 360 degrees around a tree with a platform and a squirrel step, but that's not true in every situation. My last point is tree saddle hunting is not ever one. You have Practice your climbing methods, sitting in trees, shooting from your tree saddle. Not all tree saddles are comfortable just like tree stands.

    • @RelentlessSportsman
      @RelentlessSportsman  2 роки тому +2

      Yup - exactly. Saddles are not for everyone and I believe many people purchase saddles, thinking they'll be easier to use than they really are.
      In my experience, I hate saddle hunting in leaning trees. It's not comfortable for me at all.
      I've seen the Hunting Public videos I believe you're talking about. It's 'do able', but not always ideal.
      As I stated in the video, saddle advocates and companies often say 'you can hunt in any tree', which is not the case. You can hunt in most trees, absolutely, but not every tree.
      You can also hunt many trees that are slanted with hang on stands, depending on how good the stand is and how slanted the tree is.
      I believe The Hunting Beast channel has a good video about that.
      It all depends on the situation. We all have different skills, preferences and comfort levels. No trees are exactly alike and most of us have a different combination of gear that we use.
      Well stated. Thanks for commenting and watching the video.

    Another claim that a saddle company makes is that it is a fast up and down the tree. I haven't found this to be true at all, and definitely not in a safe manner with all the gear, weapon and extra clothing. Maybe because this was my first season hunting from a saddle or from a up a tree period. I have shot a few wall hanger bucks from the ground on public land. Not carrying a stand is extremely ultralight.

    • @RelentlessSportsman
      @RelentlessSportsman  2 роки тому +1

      It takes me about the same amount of time to set up a saddle vs stand. It's definitely not faster, you're right. Especially with setting up a gear strap, platform and tether rope once you're past the last stick.
      Shooting nice bucks on public land from the ground is a great accomplishment. Well done! If you can keep doing that, I would continue going that route. No stand or saddle.
      It all depends on the circumstance of that particular hunt.

    Well you hit the nail on the head. What it is is that people are becoming more flexible and they are not only younger but have different Dynamics than what people had years ago. It's the same in the fishing industry. Back in the day people needed their own land to hunt and work hard. They built big tree stands and work their food plots. And the fishing industry everyone have to have a big bass boat. But what happened in the past decade is people are fishing out of kayaks and more and more people can have a kayak and store these small fishing vessels in apartments and the touch. Same with sal hunting. You don't have to have big truck, ATV or anything like that. You now taking less and actually hunting and fishing harder in comparison. The guide wires are still a concern for foot placement when shooting around tree and the seat made some cracks when my knees moved against it in the sitting position. Interesting, definitely a different perspective. I appreciate you taking the time to address some issues with saddles that are not often discussed. I am considering trying one out next season, but right now the cost is stopping me.
    I do have a question: The claim saddles are safer is also often made, but to my knowledge the TMA does not certify a saddle as a safety harness by itself. Is this correct? I do not see the 'TMA' logo on any saddle except XOP's which is a kind of hybrid saddle/fall restraint product.
    If it is not TMA approved as a fall restraint system, a saddle could not be used safely as a "tree stand" without adding a TMA approved fall restraint system. I do not see saddle hunters doing this. One manufacturer, XOP, includes a fall restraint system into their saddle but I do not see their saddle showing up on many recommended lists. Are saddles truly safer statistically, or is this just something many saddle hunters assume but is not supported by TMA and its testing and standards?
    I have no association with TMA, or any saddle company, I am just trying to get a handle on is this something for me, and safety is a concern. I currently use a climber, and a lock-on with climbing sticks. Thanks

    • @RelentlessSportsman
      @RelentlessSportsman  2 роки тому +1

      I believe saddles are safer because you're constantly tied to the tree with a tight rope. They are not designed to be used as a harness, which is designed to help someone after they have fall from a stand - that's my take on it. I think XOP did a great thing by making a saddle and harness combo.
      Another thing people don't discuss is tipping over in a saddle. I have never come close to doing that, but I wonder if someone were to go face down, how the saddle would be able to help them.
      Compare that to a hardness which obviously straps around your shoulders and would automatically put you back up right if you were to fall.

    I've had a tree-lounge climbing stand for years, & have loved it's comfort & security so far, however, the older I get, the more of a pain & cumbersome, it is becoming, & loud, it's impossible to set it up, & attach it to a tree quietly, (ZZZZZZZZZZZT)! The threaded bolt going through aluminum, with the aluminum clanking, then when you drop your wing nut in the leaves, & can't find it. 😳😖😡
    On top of that, try going out into the woods, & find a tree, without big branches or Y's, that you can actually make use of in a normal climber, plus those big beautiful strait trees, that are to large a diameter for the stand to even fit on.
    The last few years, I've used my stand at the base of a tree, impossible to climb, then get busted, being at eye level.
    I've also tried using a ground blind.
    Been considering using a harness system for years, now called saddle hunting.
    Mid to late season, it gets COLD, 🥶
    & in order to stay out all day, I either need heat in a box stand or ground blind, or, I tuck myself into a cold weather sleeping bag, in the climber stand.
    Mobility is destroyed, because of the gear needed to stay warm & comfortable, for an all day hunt.

But using your brain is probably the most important take away here. Having a saddle and a run n gun hang on is definitely where it’s at if you can afford it. It’s like any other tool in the tool box. Same applies for hunting and I'm glad you can also appreciate that.

    Been saddle hunting for 2 years
    Tried it 4-5 years ago but there were no good platforms. The new ones helped me stay with it. I feel safer in the saddle
    I do not like the fact deer can come from behind me without a tree to my back. I rarely sat in my hang on anyway so leaning is way more comfortable
    What do you think of the “really light” new stands on the market?

      Crazy how things have changed in recent years!
      I also feel safer in a saddle - I should have mentioned that in the video.
      Why didn't you sit in your hang on? jw
      Do you mean lone wolf custom gear stands and the beast gear hang on stand? - those are super light.
      If you're asking about those types of stands, I love them. I don't have one personally, but I've played around with them before. I think investing $600 into a stand that will last a lifetime is a good idea.
      Simple math....hunt for 30 years with the same stand = $20/year...ha! worth it to me.
      I have 2 hang on stands and 2 'pre set' stands I leave up for the season on my land so it would be hard to purchase one of those really nice, light stands.
      If I were starting over again, then yes! Worth every penny.

      Have you tried the beast stand? Do you think it’s easier to use than the lw assault?

    • @RelentlessSportsman
      @RelentlessSportsman  2 роки тому +1

      @@markcichowski7823 I have not used the beast stand. I would say it's easier to setup than the lw assault because you can hold it more steady as you're strapping it to the tree.
      If I were to purchase a new, light weight hang on stand, I believe I would purchase the beast stand over the lone wolf custom gear hang on. It's comparable weight but has a few more inches on the platform.

    It is safer. Always tied in on the way up.

    • @RelentlessSportsman

      That's right - saddles are safer.
      People who use stands exclusively, sometimes have the bad habit of not being tied in while ascending or descending the tree - only while sitting in the stand.

      @@RelentlessSportsman As long as you screw in D ring each time and double check before you move. I use teather in conjunction with lineman rope between limbs so I am always tied in. For many years of trees and hunting I was always not 100 percent tied in like this.

    You need to beat their nose. Period. I think you are more skylined in a saddle. Also alot of saddle hunting seems to have originated in warmer climates. Heavier clothing and a saddle are a pain, like you mention. Good review.

      Exactly. I've been picked from the side while saddle hunting a couple times when I can't hear the deer walking.

    I don't agree with very much at all with the opinions in this video. I am 41 and have hunted from tree stands for 25 years on public land. A saddle is better in 90 of situations out there.
    The getting picked argument is ridiculous. He might as well say if a deer comes from in front of you in a climber that they will see you. You can't make any large sudden movements in any stand.
    The bulky clothes and boots argument also doesn't make sense. I have never found them to be a problem. That is a reach.
    A saddle is infinitely more comfortable than any loc-on or ladder with a fixed seat. A full back millennium is the only thing better. If you are not comfortable you can't sit still.

    • @RelentlessSportsman
      @RelentlessSportsman  2 роки тому +1

      How do you know a saddle would be better 90% of the situations out there? Do you know exactly where I and others hunt every single time??
      As a content creator, I have had many, many people mention how bulky clothes cause problems while saddle hunting. I'm not making arguments in my video. I'm not here to debate or prove anyone wrong within my videos.
      I make videos to show people what works for me, and what I've done to be successful over the years.
      If you like one method or hunting over the other, I could care less. Please use what works for you.
      Then for you to say that a saddle is MORE comfortable than a stand? How do you know everyone else's comfort levels and body types?
      You're making an absolute statement that you believe applies to everyone, just because it's true for you.
      Listen - everyone is different. Everyone has their own hunting styles, comfort levels and preferences.
      You need to do what works for YOU. I guarantee what works for YOU will not always work for everyone else. We don't all need to hunt the exact same way and have the exact same opinions. That's ridiculous.
