I’m 280lbs and I took to a saddle like a duck to water. Took me about 30 seconds and I said wish I’d known about this 40 years ago. I’ve hunted out of saddle about 6-7 years now. Greg & Ernie & you guys are an awesome help.
I have hunted out of a saddle for 4 years. I have had so much success with my setup now 4 beast sticks with 1 step aider per stick. 100% a game changer. I hunt a different tree every hunt and it's so fun. Best chance to kill a big buck is the first set.
I've been saddle hunting since Greg showed me the modified sit drag method. I have changed things up a bit and use my saddle combined with the lower portion of my climbing stand. I place my tether as high as I can reach and put my climber base on the tree, then pull the base up with my feet, stand up and sinch the tether up and do it again until I'm at the height I want. No climbing sticks needed.
This video..... One of the ABSOLUTE best ones I've seen!! No BS and easy to understand. I was one of those that was overwhelmed by the thought of all the gear etc. This would have helped that for sure.
Used a climber for years. Bought in last year after seeing all the videos and I've never looked back!! Thank you for all the tutorials, made learning how to saddle hunt easy!
I find that my Tethrd saddle is more comfortable than a loc on for all day sits. I have a bad back and have no problem hanging in the saddle. Wish I had done it sooner. It made hunting even more enjoyable for me!! I didn’t think that could even be possible
I hunt with a platform mounted over a ring of steps. This gives the hunter the best of both worlds. Platforms are comfortable and versatile and the steps allow the hunter the hide behind the tree in a stable manner to make a shot. I rarely see this combination being promoted. It does take more time to set up but I believe it is worth it. Thanks for all your past videos.
not sure if yall have ever tried it but one thing ive started doing is just using the bottom of my summit climber instead of packing sticks in and out plus ive got a big platform.
@portapottyflipper6957 Just use the tree strap that it comes with for the top once normally sat. Use it on the same spot for the lower 1/2 instead. The walk-in will suck as the back padding is the seat on the top 1/2. Maybe slip a small piece of foam in between you and the platform for your back. Can use as knee pads aswell once at the tree.
I was so overwhelmed when I first started looking into how I wanted to hunt out of a tree!!! And this seemed to add a whole other level of confusion. All I can say is in my humble opinion, it is THE best option. It’s intuitive to use. It’s comfortable. It’s versatile which is key for public land. I’d recommend it to anyone !!!!
I bought my first saddle set up for this season just because of me watching your channel. You have inspired me to get into public land hunting and after a few interactions with deer where I couldn't get exactly where I wanted because there was no ground cover I knew I needed a portable tree set up. I like how with a saddle you don't need a straight tree like you would with a climber.
I was skeptical about saddle hunting, but I took the plunge last year and bought the Tethered system and never looked back. The climbing stand never seen the woods last year. Best upgrade I've ever made to my hunting arsenal. Great product, 100% through and through. BTW, I have a Summit Viper SD For Sale 😜
I'm new to saddle hunting this year. I made a two panel saddle and can't imagine not having two panels. It is soooo comfortable to have the second panel on my middle/lower back.
I’m 63 years old and am thinking of making the switch to saddle for mobility. 35 years of treestand hunting and I want to have greater mobility. Good advice
I've had my saddle for just a season now, and I'm very comfortable with it even all day sits, and I'm 6'5" and 260. I mostly gun hunt, but have used the bow out of it a few tomes, even then, once locked in, you're golden.. Love the information ya'll give, it's changed my game! Love what you're doing ❤️
Hey bro, I am a huge fan of saddle hunting, I have the Trophyline vanatic set up. I am often still blown away by how the saddle works for long sits and fairly comfortable. I am often still trying to figure out what is causing the pain in my hip. Come to Wisconsin and hunt
Get ready to drop some money! Once you get into saddle hunting you got to have it all! My first year in it and I will never set in a stand again. I personally one stick and rappel down. I love it because it’s like turkey hunting you got a lot of gadgets to play with!
Best decision I ever made was switching over to a tethrd saddle I've taken 2 bucks and 4 deer total over the past few years and it definitely takes some time to adjust but I'll never go back to a treestand. They're safe as hell, comfy like you wouldn't believe and adjustable to fit every person. the versatility and weight factor alone is perfect for any public or private land hunter to adapt to the deer your hunting and not just sit in the same Ole ladder stand praying a buck walks by this year. #pennsy #saddlehunter
I've been thinking of getting into saddle hunting, just for the mobility and being alot quieter than hanging a stand. But having had 2 back surgeries, I'm not sure I'd be able to sit long without a way of taking the stress off my back. My lower 3 vertebrae are made of titanium now. At least in a stand I can lean back against the tree or just have the ability to stand or sit down.
Had to go to THP for this enjoy all your videos keep em coming. You guys are having an awesome 2022 season. Just wanted to throw out there any hunters using quick links on your rappel ropes I have been hooking my pull down rope on the rappel side of the quick link and it has been coming down from the tree easier and with less noise and with not having to step from the tree and spreading scent trying to break the velcro effect bite of the tree bark on the rope. Also climbed over branches and still was able to pull the rope through the quick link and over the branches to get my rope back.
Just got my new tethrd system this year. Been practicing in the back yard, thanks for the tips guys. This is gonna help out alot. Can't wait to get it out on public and feel the freezer.
I just bought a budget saddle system and am pumped for the season. Having a little butt hammock just seems loads more fun than a stand or sitting up against a tree
Wow info,i didnt recieve treestand and sticks package because i got ripped off by that site of purchase ,,.Had rope and harness ,really feels like I've been practicing Saddle Hunting ,so one stick and harness with long rope is hard ,,yet ill keep at It .Great Video
Great info!! For me the problem is getting up there, not what to do when I get there. In my defense, my knees are gone, and it hurts to climb sometime. LOL
Its not as easy as it looks. Or comfortable. But they have advantages over climbers. Hung a few times last year and will do more this year. Great work THP 👏 Tethrd looking forward to more vids like these.
I'll be 65 in November, been saddle hunting for the past 6 years. It's safe. If you're going to use climbing sticks make sure get some that are not too long for you to step up.
I'm interested in trying this. Since I rock climb I already have a bunch of the gear. Just need the platform and the saddle. Sitting all day in a climbing harness would be rough.
Used a saddle all last season and it was great! I busted my ankle real good a few weeks ago so I'm going to be doing a lot more ground sits this year. I've got it in a brace and just don't think it has the strength for climbing up and down trees for a few months😔
one word of caution.... be mindful of your carabiner! I had my crossbow cam hit the carabiner when I shot, still hit the deer but took a good chunk out of the cam and put a sharp spurr or two on it, had to replace the cam on my Ravin... Have not hit it with my vertical bow, but something to keep in mind.
I've hunted for 5 years out of one, overall its solid however shooting to weak side sucks(2-3 o'clock for right handed shooter). It takes so much movement- you either need to swing bow over/under bridge or stand up and do a 180 if you are on a platform. I've been busted plenty when a deer changes direction at the last second and ends up on my right side. A lot less movement if you are in a treestand in that situation.
Gentlemen! Always use your lineman belt. I switched packs and left mine at home. The loop popped out on my climbing stick and took about a 15 ft fall. Learn from my mistakes and always use your safety equipment!
How do you safety climb a tree with a lot of limbs on your way up? Two lineman ropes? Atach one above the limb and the disconnect the rope below the limb and so on?
Just use your tether. I climb up to the limp, clip my tether in, hang on it, unclip my lineman rope, put the lineman rope over the limb, clip it in, then unclip the tether, and continue on. Takes some practice to be able to do it quickly but even moving slowly its efficient and handy to be able to get in trees like that.
Those folks worried about comfort need not worry. I have pretty severe Rheumatoid Arthritis and can sit in a saddle much longer than I can be in a treestand. I use a Kestral rather than a Tethr'd saddle, but that's just because I had it before I every heard of Tethr'd.. I use the Predator platform and numerous other Tethrd gear. With time and experience, you can dial in your system to be perfect for you. Putting g moleskin here and there will quiet the platform down to virtually silent! Anyhow, it's good stuff and a great way to hunt, and keep the deer guessing. I cringe after realizing how much time I wasted sitting in a permanent or semi permanent stand over the last 40 years. Being able to move, even small distances between sits has brought great results!
Last year was my first year saddle hunting and I'll tell you I won't go back to hang on stands. It took me a bit to get the hang of it, but once I did it was a game changer.
Saturday morning was opening day and took one trip with portable in public deep had me after morning hunt buying the Trophyline saddle and play form practiced some at home and no longer beating my back walking in with that heavy portable and I had a summit
Kansas season is open now. I'll be heading out this weekend with my h2 saddle. All day sits are definitely doable. I go out at 8 in the morning and sit till dark all the time. Like the tethrd crew said you'll just have to make adjustments throughout the day
Got the phantom kit with pouches, HYS strap, ropemans, MVP and a set of skeletors. Put my cousin in it and he ordered one while I was taking it down. Got two people at work looking at them now. Cannot wait for October 1st.
I just got a xop saddle and I got in it at the base of a tree on my property today. It’s definitely different but it definitely will open up options on where I hunt instead of a set stand location
@@heavymetalfishingla it’s not bad for someone who wants to get into saddle hunting and see if they like it. A lot of excess rope and straps so cutting and burning and is a must after you get everything set the way you like it. It’s actually pretty comfortable
I'm just starting saddle hunting and plan to test it in a more or less fixed location. Any reason not to just use a lifeline once you get the saddle and sticks set up? Attach it to the bridge at the bottom of the tree and just slide the knot up with you.
I have been debating getting into a saddle so I don't have to move a climber around base to base... I'm just so comfortable in my climber its tough to pull the trigger.
I'm in the same boat as you. I absolutely LOVE my summit openshot climber at 14 pounds as there are no sticks needed. BUT it only works on straight limbless trees 😁 which sometimes are hard to find based on deer trails I find on public. I have a lot of money tied up in multiple lock on stands, a climbing stand and 2 pairs of rapid rails. The Tethrd brand and others are a LOT of money. Any affordable options with platforms anyone can recommend?
First year saddle hunter last year and I struggled with the platform. I went out with no practice and that was the only thing I struggled with. Great info in this video! Good luck with the season guys!!
I was a climber guy until last year I got the saddle. my climber is still in the woods at my hunting camp so I literally never looked back. should go grab that thing tho.
I am not flexible and have short legs. Most sticks are 20in long, but I bought a set last year that are 36in long with three steps on them. Top, middle, and bottom. Game changer. Even if the sticks are stacked on each other, you're already 12 foot up. If they're just 12 inches from each other and the first is 12in from the ground, you're already 16 foot up. I think mine are Millenium
okay guys Question for you being disabled an cant shoot a bow anymore i have to use a crossbow .how is it to shoot a crossbow from the saddle???im wanting to do the saddle thing but not sure if you can shoot the crossbow from the saddle PLEASE HELP ME OUT
I use a crossbow and I don't have a problem. On my belt I have a 20' lanyard that I attach to the bow before I climb up. Once I'm at the height I want I pull the unloaded bow up. When shooting just be mindful of the clearance needed for the crossbow limbs.
I think the comment Jake made about being scared of heights can not be overlooked. I have never been a big fan of a hang on platform on a single tree, i always tried to hang my hang on stand in amongst 3 or more trees if possible. I felt safer. But with my saddle i have never felt safer! The tethr having you tied in and taunt to the tree feels so safe and secure. I have no issues, cause i feel secure and hunt even higher now. I have also done my rutcation with 2 weeks of all days sits with no problems.
@sola Fide have you ever been concerned with flipping backwards at all? I just went up mine for the first time last week and maybe I just had my bridge set goofy or something but I always felt like i was going to tip and do a backflip
@@scottlange6299 Hi Scott, It does take a little time to get used to the feel. Be sure the saddle rides high on your belt line. It should be above the belt on the small of the back. Not below your belt. Also I have mine adjusted to be a stander. I’m not a sitting in saddle hunting. I’m in basically a modified stand/leave. But I’m more upright. Kinda like you see Ted. You probably had too much distance between the tree and your body. Think leaning at a 45 deg angle. I’m not leaned back that far more upright. That calls for a shorter tethr length. Don’t ever get comfortable above the ground. Hand you platform at knee height. And practice in your yard or some place like that. You can learn and get comfortable and even practice. And you only need to be 1-2ft off the ground. Then when you feel good about what your doing. Practice at hunting height. The bridge length/tethr length is what take the tweaking to fine “YOUR” desired style. Take your time. And figure things out. Watch lots of UA-cam videos. Hope this helps. God bless.
A prussik isn't the only friction hitch. Look into directional friction hitches, most notably for those using a prussik loop already the Klemheist. They allow one handed weighted adjustment in both directions with a micro pully. Ropeman devices cannot do that. Source: Hundreds of hours doing climbing tree removals. There are mechanical devices that allow for this as well, but they are significantly more expensive than a prussik loop.
I have a question completely unrelated to saddle hunting, when is Zach going to spot and stalk with the longbow? I know he teased the idea a few years ago during the turkey tour.
This is a great video for beginners, I've been using a saddle for 3 years now my piece of advise is don't get into a brand stigma, try many different saddles if you are able what works for one may not be best for another!
Do you prefer a "one stick" or "4 Stick" climbing method? I'm interested to know if the one stick is the way to go. I have a broken back and need to keep things as light as possible.
My tip for a little added security. The kong duck ascender is made for smaller diameter rope, 8mm I believe. I think the ropeman is made for 10mm. Anyways I don't like that the ascender is the only thing holding me onto the tether because it is mechanical. I have the kong duck and I leave the prusik on the tether line above the ascender. If the ascender fails or I make a mistake I still have the prusik that will catch me. You will only have a few inches of drop... I have had zero issues at all with the ascender to make me want this, just an extra piece of mind. I also take my linemen rope and put that through my carabiner as a back up bridge to my amsteel bridge. I leave the linemen a little slack so all my weight is on the amsteel bridge. I do this just incase bridge 1 fails.
I like the light weight, climb any tree, aspect of saddle system but I don't like hanging from a rope and donning camouflage tightly whiteys. I'm currently working on a new system I'm an older guy and a bit bigger than I used to be. Id like an electric elevator to lift me to hunting hight but I can't fit it in a back pack like you can in a video game. Lol
Gregg has always been very informative when it comes to saddle hunting. I was sad when they didn't come out with the carbon platform or not in time when I planned on buying one but I ended up with a good one.
I wanted to get one but in terrified of heights as is I have enough time going up in a climer the guys I hunt with always pick on me for how much lower I sit in the tree
I love my new phantom xl and my skeletor sticks. I wish I could afford a predator but after buying all of the other tethrd gear my budget is blown. I made a diy platform that I am getting by with but it isn't as light, secure and comfortable. You can bet the predator will be my next purchase when it comes to hunting gear.

What's the weight limit on these units. Thanks.
Yup I'ma buy one now just so I can go in farther and not have to set on the ground
I'm just starting saddle hunting and plan to test it in a more or less fixed location. Any reason not to just use a lifeline once you get the saddle and sticks set up? Attach it to the bridge at the bottom of the tree and just slide the knot up with you.
Are there types of trees to avoid with this setup? or will it work with any kind of tree?
You will get NO answers here! lol I have the same question.
Is it suitable for heavier people as well?
I love hunting from my saddle, I wish I would have had one 20 years ago.
First year saddle hunter last year and I struggled with the platform. I went out with no practice and that was the only thing I struggled with. Great info in this video! Good luck with the season guys!!
Great info!!! Trying saddle hunting these year!!
I was a climber guy until last year I got the saddle. my climber is still in the woods at my hunting camp so I literally never looked back. should go grab that thing tho.
Anybody ever tried these on Aspen? We have a few cottonwood but mostly aspen and spruce here in this part of the Rockies
I’m a crossbow and rifle hunter and My question is could you use a saddle for crossbow and rifle hunts????
Thanks! First year in a saddle so any info helps!
What about the climbing sticks, I have short legs and can't reach far up from last step. Are they all one size?
I am not flexible and have short legs. Most sticks are 20in long, but I bought a set last year that are 36in long with three steps on them. Top, middle, and bottom. Game changer. Even if the sticks are stacked on each other, you're already 12 foot up. If they're just 12 inches from each other and the first is 12in from the ground, you're already 16 foot up. I think mine are Millenium
Wish you would of talked about how you guys carry your sticks in/ up the tree. Do you need an aider to reach max height
okay guys Question for you being disabled an cant shoot a bow anymore i have to use a crossbow .how is it to shoot a crossbow from the saddle???im wanting to do the saddle thing but not sure if you can shoot the crossbow from the saddle PLEASE HELP ME OUT
I use a crossbow and I don't have a problem. On my belt I have a 20' lanyard that I attach to the bow before I climb up. Once I'm at the height I want I pull the unloaded bow up. When shooting just be mindful of the clearance needed for the crossbow limbs.
I want try this but damn saddle are so expensive. Might have to get a climbing rig and see if that's close.

Hi Scott, It does take a little time to get used to the feel. God bless.
When is the THP saddle hunting graphic t-shirt coming out?
How about rifle hunting from a saddle (our county rules require elevated rifle hunting)?
first season in a saddle, pretty excited to give it a try
Lol
can the hunters safety system be used as a saddle?
It’s crazy how well that’s all made for a hunter.
What saddles are y'all using this year
Gregg has always been very informative when it comes to saddle hunting. I was sad when they didn't come out with the carbon platform or not in time when I planned on buying one but I ended up with a good one.
Using a back band really helps increase the comfort level for longer sits
greg, I miss your video's. Please start them up again!
I wanted to get one but in terrified of heights as is I have enough time going up in a climer the guys I hunt with always pick on me for how much lower I sit in the tree
But is there a FULL list of items a newbie can cut n paste and look for?
I love my new phantom xl and my skeletor sticks. I wish I could afford a predator but after buying all of the other tethrd gear my budget is blown. I made a diy platform that I am getting by with but it isn't as light, secure and comfortable. You can bet the predator will be my next purchase when it comes to hunting gear.
