The KO3 has a completely different compound than the KO2. Acting like the new KO3 will be the same as the KO2 is extremely ignorant in my opinion It is a completely different tire. Not trying to convince you to try them, but I'd highly recommend checking out Nate's video on @OutdoorAuto comparing it with the KO2.

Comparing tires is one thing, first hand experience is another. I don't put any stock in tire spec comparison video's. Real world experience is all I care about. If that makes me ignorant, so be it!

Comparing the ko2s that came off my truck when I bought it to the falken AT4Ws I have now, these not only have better traction on and off-road, but they're quieter and not as stiff. Not to mention, like you said in the video, my tires were 2018s, replaced in 2023, so dry rotted that i wouldn't drive them further than 100 miles without feeling unsafe. Got about 4k miles on my Wildpeaks and so far I haven't had a single complaint, absolutely love these and depending on the mileage span I will definitely grab another set.

I have KO2's on my Tundra that I take offroad in Baja and they have held up great. Good traction in the dry, loose, rocky stuff when aired down a bit (20-25 psi). Previously had the original KO's and they chipped quickly on the same terrain (mainly from the rock embedded hard pack dirt road sections). It doesn't rain/snow where I go, so I don't have much concern about traction in those conditions.
Never had balance issues with either...maybe I was just lucky.
I went with the BFG's partly because of their stout sidewall to help prevent getting flats in Baja. I'm glad my KO2's still have many miles left to go so I can hear what the long term reports are on the KO3's, and also check out other options for the next set of tires.

  • @wayneanderson991
    @wayneanderson991 8 місяців тому +8

I do agree that the KO2's are hard to balance and wet traction is poor especially on a diesel with all the low end torque. I might give the KO3's a try because it looks like they have moved in the right direction with the tread pattern and from what I understand the rubber compound on the new KO3's is different than what was used for the KO2's. I have never had the dry rot issue, probably because the tires are wore out in 3 years due to milage. I usually get to about 45,000 miles and then look for replacements. I am very tempted to give the falken AT4W's a try, they do look like a nice tire.

  • @CoffeeRacer561

I've had my KO2s for 70K + miles (and still going) in 5.5 years of use. I live in S. FL. where we have rainy (stormy) seasons as well as blistering summers. I seldom slip and the tires have not dry rotted yet. It's rotated and balanced about once a year and the wear is perfect. I haven't even aligned the truck in 5.5 years. I'm not saying that people don't have issues with these tires, it's well documented, but I have not. I can see how a pickup or any truck with a lighter rear end will certainly slip. As much as I'm interested in the AT4W, the weight is a big turn off.

I agree with the cracking on KO2’s. I don’t agree with the bad wear. My last set had 50000+ miles and still had ample tread life left. I’m buying KO3’s when they are released for my current truck.

Was looking at the KO3’s and the latest greatest Cooper Discoverer Stronghold AT in 295/70R17 for my ‘06 Dodge Megacab 4x4, and decided to go with the Coopers. The Stronghold AT is a very nice riding tire with a fairly aggressive tread, albeit not a mud terrain tread…no longer than I’ve had them on I’m impressed with them so far. I have noticed a lot of light cracking appearing between the tread blocks on each set of KO2's that appears a few years after purchasing them. I've had 3 sets over the years. I never had any issues with the KO2's aside this 'cracking'. Is it superficial? Perhaps, but it doesn't inspire confidence.

The BFGoodrich KO3 tires are reportedly easier to balance compared to the KO2s due to improvements in the tire’s construction and design. Here are a few factors that likely contribute to this:
    1. Improved Uniformity in Manufacturing:
BFGoodrich likely made adjustments in the manufacturing process for the KO3 tires, leading to better consistency in material distribution across the tire. When a tire is built with more uniformity, it reduces the need for extra weight to balance it.
    2. Enhanced Tread and Sidewall Construction:
The KO3 features an updated tread pattern and 3D-locking sipes, which offer a more evenly distributed tread across the surface. This even tread wear and improved structural design help the tire maintain a more balanced rotation, reducing imbalance issues that could arise from uneven tread patterns in the KO2.
    3. Weight Distribution:
The KO3 might feature more balanced weight distribution throughout the tire, meaning the overall design minimizes heavy spots. This allows the tire to rotate more smoothly without the need for excessive balancing weights.
    4. Technology and Testing:
BFGoodrich has used over a decade of data and testing in the development of the KO3. This extensive testing likely allowed for refinements in the design that improve balance and ride comfort over the KO2, making the KO3 less prone to imbalances during manufacturing .
These improvements contribute to why the KO3 may balance more easily, reducing the effort and materials needed to balance them after installation.

The KO2s on my 95 f150 4x4 look fantastic, but I agree that the grip is not great. I have Yokohama Geolandars on our Subarus that grip better in almost all conditions.
No issues balancing the KO2s, so i can't agree with him on that, and no dry rot or uneven wear adter 4 years of light use. The truck goes great through deep snow.
One thing not mentioned is how tough the tire is. The previous set of KO2s lasted more than 10 years and were never punctured. Thd bead aleays held up well also. The only knock in these tires that i really have is rhe traction. There are better gripping tires out there.

I think you nailed it. They might have been the first to really get established as a "serious AT tire" 25 years ago,.....but I think many of the other manufacturers then put a lot more effort into making better tires while BFG seems to have largely just rested on their laurels/reputation. Currently have a set of 285/70/17 KO2s on my Gladiator that I can't wait to replace.
