If 6x super bowl winning coach Bill Belichek can get fired after a few bad seasons then I don't see why 1x super bowl winning coach Pete Carrol can't be fired after a few mediocre seasons.
Pete got a good deal - they kept him for his strengths in the front office yet let him go for what has been a very obvious, demsonstrated downward spiral since 2015ish
I'm not a Seahawks fan but I was pretty surprised. It's not like Seattle was losing games like the Patriots are now that Tom Brady left. Heck I'm surprised the Titans fired Vrabel. He is a good coach.
Kind of an unfair assessment of the Post-Brady Pats. This last year was the first year they've been objectively bad, and their aggregate record in the three prior seasons was 25-25. Carroll is 25-26 in the last three seasons.
Agreed. Back to back winning seasons and get fired, because people here have unreal expectations. They don't remember the crappy years from before, when it was a miracle if Seahawks made the playoffs. He got to the playoffs 10 out of 14 years, and surprises everyone last year by getting into the playoffs without Wilson at QB, so then everyone raised the bar for no good reason. I expected this year to be exactly what it was, and then make the jump next year.

Something WAS going to change - mgmt/owner group agreed with Pete's plan to continue the "reset" by replacing some position coaches, and then fired him a couple of days later (see his press conference as evidence, etc.). By changing more than that, the rebuild will now take longer but also just is stupid given his contract only had a year beyond this anyway and he could have more gracefully left. The "owner" (she's really only her brother's trust admin) and Schneider don't impress without PC there.
Being a 49ers fan, I must acknowledge that Pete Carroll stands out as one of the best coaches in the field. He secured Seattle's first championship and even developed Geno Smith into a Pro Bowler. During the Legion of Boom era, Seattle posed a significant challenge for us under Pete's leadership. It seems like a substantial error on Seattle's part to let him go.
One question that immediately came to mind that hasn’t been addressed yet. Does a new HC, particularly a first time HC want to come into a role where Carroll will still be there in an “advisory” position. Would they be a new HC or just a proxy. Someone like Vrabel would be confident and strong enough to maintain his own vision for the club having been a HC for 6 years already, but with someone new like Johnson is there a risk of mixed messages?
Seattle's a pretty complete team with ownership not known for being a complete clownshow (unlike the Spanos family or David Tepper), can't imagine candidates wouldn't want to come.
They’ll want to come and some team will benefit hugely if Pete coaches again. I’ve said elsewhere, I’m not even a Seattle fan and I’m genuinely shocked by this. Pete Carroll is one of a kind.

After a couple days, listening to the Sports Radio guys, and reading lots of articles, to me it comes down to this. The team is not improving. It isn't just that we went 9-8 (same as last year) and missed the playoffs. After last year's 9-8 and getting blasted in the Wild Card, significant changes were made. Yet, this team did not show growth throughout the season. We were horrible against the Steelers when there was so much on the line. When the staff can't get the team ready for a game with that much at stake, something is wrong. In spite of a LOT of roster changes, we still wallowed. Think about the D for example. We went out and got a new DL with Jerron Reed, DreMont Jones, Mario Edwards, drafted Cam Young, and then brought in Leonard Williams. We brought back Wagner. We grabbed Julian Love, Devin Bush, and drafted Witherspoon. Yet the defense was STILL horrible. On offense, we brought back Geno, added arguably the best # 3 WR we've had in ages (JSN), upgraded RB # 2 (although we let Penny walk) with Zach taking snaps instead of Dallas. We brought in Evan Brown at Center. Yet the offense was no better. So, in a season in which we should have felt some kind of upward trajectory, we watched them fall flat. Sure there were a couple of great wins, but when Pete cited how close they were to being an 11-12 win team, I thought he failed to consider how close we were to a 10-11 LOSS team. Plenty of last minute heroics prevented that, but you can't live on that alone. Rolling the dice with a new HC is always risky. We've seen plenty of big names fail to produce. But it was time for something different here.
Growing up in SoCal With Carroll at USC made me fall in love with football. Wish we could have had him for a few more years, but I was so happy to see him get a Super Bowl. Bittersweet, but I’m happy he can retire on his own terms ❤️
Why does everyone think that Pete Carroll was fired when he’s retiring and still an advisor to the Seahawks and don’t forget he’s executive vice president of the team. Let the man enjoy the time he has for his life.
Christ , am I the only one who remembers the fact that both teams that went to the super bowl, were put together by Mike Holmgren before Pete Carroll ever got near Seattle ? Most of the people commenting weren`t even adults at the time .
I think suggesting that Carroll won with Holmgren's guys is disingenuous. The Legion of Boom, Beast Mode, Wilson, etc. were Pete's guys, and I don't think those teams make the Super Bowl without those guys. There was a 5-year gap between Holmgren's last year with the team and Carroll's first Super Bowl team, and Carroll wasn't here yet for the first of those years; Jim Mora was. I also remember there being quite the roster overhaul between when Mora was fired and Carroll took the team to the Super Bowl a few years later, including the guys I just mentioned.
No but smart fans know you’re totally wrong….that might be the dumbest comment on here…Mora was between the two and Pete and the front office made over 200 roster moves in the first year alone….by 2013 and 14 there were ZERO Holmgren players left…..get your facts straight dude….ridiculous….
i havent watched ESPN in YEARS, but i randomly saw a clip of this lady Mina, and I like her a lot. if they arent already, they should definitely do more with her. i like her nic naks in the background too. shes a sports nerd and doesnt forget where she came from thats cool to me.
The job of the head coach is to set the culture and strategy, NOT run the offense or defense. That's why Pete should have been given one more season to fix the coaching issues and execution with the defense, and he had already stated that as a point of focus. Now there will be chaos and the fans don't realize it. When you make a complete change, you are looking at 3 years before it stabilizes again and good luck with that.
Let's be honest jamal adams was the reason for this. Pete traded the house for adams and completely changed his scheme to fit his strengths and jamal completely destroyed us in every single way on the field and Pete's refusal to acknowledge how bad he really is and was on the field. made both the fan base and management question his judgments. Jamal was the worse decision in the history of this franchise
@@martyflores7057 I'm still salty over that. Spent a chunk of that game despondent as it looked over for Seattle, then the interceptions, the insane barely inbounds catch, and other things to turn it around at the end-just to get kicked in the balls with that decision to throw on the 1-yard line, when they had the best running back in the NFL, and a great o-line.
Very attractive job, Hawks don't need to many pieces at all, this may be the year you move up and grab your QB to go along with the new regime. Talented young team with dynasty potential.
@@anjkam123 I live in Seattle and watch that team. There is no dynasty building here. They have some good pieces but they are miles from being a dynasty. Try making the playoffs first.
@@inttruders A lot of people live in Seattle, doesn't mean you like the Seahawks. If your a true fan your know the foundation of this team is only 2yrs old. Give it a year or 2 and this roster will be one of the most talented teams around.
The more the game changes, the more it stays the same. There are no new concept - just trends that come and go. Only one commentator pointed out that Seahawks WILL be sold (see their own press release a year ago) per terms of Paul Allen's will, and what will that look like now? If they wanted to gut the coaches, then sell the team too and start over completely.
As Mina stated, the players that played for him talk about Pete different than any others - that they would run through a wall for him. The game - which as fans like to point out is more about the Jimmy and Joes than Xs and Os - has therefore not passed Pete by. Given the 10 playoff appearances in 14 years, 2 SB appearances with a win, and only 1 losing season, he should have able to plan his exit. So-called fans that say the game has passed him by don't get it themselves. The PLAYERS current and former enjoyed playing for him and you heard Pete say "the league is not about the owners or fans, it is about/for the players". And that's what it should be first, but fans are rabid and don't care, and don't have any real appreciation for good coaches or player legacy. Pete's players gathered with him that night to reflect and celebrate Pete - even Russ dropped everything in flew in, which should say it all. Did the roster underperform? Not really. And if it is a roster issue then Schneider is more culpable than Pete! We know they were in a rebuild even if Pete called it a reset, and so he should have got the 3rd year in that process to see if the talent really is there. He wasn't given a chance to fix it, and then gracefully bow out if he didn't. Again, given the 10 playoff appearances in 14 years, 2 SB appearances with a win, and only 1 losing season, he should have able to plan his exit. If I was interviewing for the job, I'd look at that, look at the ownership situation (she has to sell the team soon and pass the proceeds to charity), I'd keep on walking to somewhere else. Not to mention, that Seattle really IS South Alaska when it comes to media focus, MVP voting, etc. There is always a strategic plan in good organizations, and it doesn't sound like the possibility of Pete leaving this year was in that plan. This feels more like the owner - who inherited the team and relies on others for advice - reacted without a plan. The evidence for that is also in that they apparently don't have anyone lined up to take his place. Word has it Quinn says he is staying in Dallas (but after their early playoff exit who knows), and there is no way you can bring Harbaugh here! So who is it?? If you go with a defensive coach, it makes no sense and yet that's their flaw right now, Some said it was plan to draft Penix and bring his coach Deboer with him, but he took the job in Alabama. Truthfully, most college jobs are more attractive than the NFL. You could go after Lincoln Riley from USC, as Brock Huard has mentioned, but you aren't going to get his QB in Wiliams that just declared for the draft and expected to be pick #1. So good luck finding anything that makes sense and actually works. FYI - I'm serious about Harbaugh. If he comes here, I'll root for another team. He doesn't belong here and he's a crazy dictator. Who tucks a sweatshirt into their khakis, LOL....
This 12 didn't think that Pete took a fall he wore out his welcome it was time for him to go.Not to mention he turned players against one another, refused to pay the Legion of Boom after giving the players promissory notes, and jacked of a Super Bowl with a Bone-Head call. Pete can go and take that BUM Geno Smith with him. He's just like Belicheck trying to win by squandering of our high draft picks we need to spend that 16th 1st round pick on a QUARTERBACK.
Dang dude! I thought I was harsh. You make me look like an angel. BUT.....I totally agree with you. Watching this bland team year after year while other teams are razzle dazzling now was tough to swallow week after week. Especially giving up soooo many 3rd and long first downs. It was too depressing to watch. This year, I turned the game off after the 1st and 2nd qtr several times.
Yes, it was time to move on from Coach Pete, but your assertion that Pete played players against each other is f--cking b--llsh-t. Pete always protected the team, even to the very end. The Legion of Boom was aging out dude. Luke Wilson, was in the huddle[ being the tight end], during the that fateful superbowl, and he said that Russ changed the play to a passing play, then f--cked it all up. I also want to move on from Geno, but calling him a bum only reflects poorly on yourself. Geno is well respected, both as a player and a man, in the Seahawk lockerroom. So, picking arguably the best reciever in the draft at 20, and Witherspoon at 5 is squandering our picks? I don't f--cking think so. And about that QB thing, we won't be drafting a QB high in the draft cuz our next QB is already on the team. His name is Drew Lock. John Snyder absolutely loves him and probably sees huge, untapped potential. As do I.
@Richard-il6wc Not sure what that is about except for Jamal having to play Love for his starting spot with the Eagles game. Love beat him out on Wednesday. That's what Pete would do vs. sitting Jamal down and telling him he's lost it or he's hurting us right now being on the field tiring out and trying not to get hurt again.
Btw Wink Martindale HC and have him upgrade coordinators with the culture like he did I’m Michigan with some assistants 🤷🏽♂️ 👀 just a take 😂😂😂 🫡😶🌫️😶🌫️😮💨
I think there gonna get rid of the un-coachable players. I assume your referring to our pathetic, "averse to tackling" defense. Woolen better get traded this offseason, assuming there's a team that would want him, and that's not a given.
No one is saying this, but I can see Dave Canales come in and bring Baker. Has a ton of experience with Seattle and can give the offense a fresh look that it sorely needs.
Great coach. Great person. I wish the Bears had waited 24 hours. Love Pete Carroll. I really hope he coaches again. He’s infectious. People forget the cap struggles, the way Geno was turned into a legit QB cos they had no money to spend. Players stayed behind at the end of the season for him and attended the press conference. Notice how much compassion he has for the players and their families. I’m stunned.
Russ should’ve stayed in Seattle and him and Pete should’ve rode off into the sunset together. The divorce was ugly and no one won in the end. It’s like when a couple that was successful together gets a divorce and both end up just meh apart. Not total train wrecks but definitely not thriving like when they were together
After Mr Allen passed away, it wss inevitable that new family head of Ownership got cheap, and wanted both Russ and Pete to be out. Ownership wanted to clean house, rid of last era. Now the last guy, Pete, is out.
There's absolutely NO WAY Jody Allen will succeed in "keeping Pete in the building." He took the high road in his press conference, but there was nothing mutual about her firing him, and it is clear that he did not and does not accept the reason(s) she gave him. He will be hands-on with the GM until he makes sure all his coaches land safely, but after that, it's sayonara. He'll never speak negatively in public, and he'll be back for whatever honorary ceremony they do. He might even go along with some sort of "consulting" charade if it's required to the best possible cashout. But nothing more. It's not necessarily WHAT Jody Allen did, it's the WAY she did it and the way it's being handled. Pete has more than earned having Jody Allen show up and lead the press conference by starting with a testimonial of gratitude to him for all he's done for the franchise and the legacy he's built there, and she should 100% own her decision and leave him with his dignity.
Lots of issues but let's face it, guys: 70 years old is too old to be leading young men mainly in their twenties in a locker room. No need to overthink it.
Adams and older secondary positions are overpaid vs production. Have to resign 99. Lots of QB’s in draft. Hope we don’t go retread coach. Figure JH to Wash. BB to LAC. MV to NE. We prob go like a Ben Johnson or Mike McDonald.
U dont fire ur franchise qb and go with the ~9yr backup and expect to get better. Gino couldnt convert and left his D out to dry too often. Gino cost us 2-3wins, Locke was clearly the better/franchise replacement option. Pete would be coaching for the SB right now if he had been willing to move away from Russ / Gino s pass heavy formations / system a long time ago... when Lynch and the LOB were the focus or even now when a potential franchise Eagles beating QB barely got even a shot
Listen I support the thought of drafting a qb, but Geno was not the problem, most of his oline was hurt this year and he had terrible play calling, - the defense was ranked 30th in the NFL
ALL coaches in NFL have issues connection with many of the new young players - because the new young players are changing from college that kissed their butt to the Not For Long league where you do your job or get cut. Pete did better than most, as he was a great college coach himself before the Seahawks. The real issue is a fake owner (a trust administrator, who is obligated to sell the team at some point), her advisor, and Schneider wanted to be in charge.
Well, maybe if the front office hadn't traded away Russel Wilson, the last three seasons might have had a better outcome. So now to blame Pete Carol for the lack of results is ridicules.
Blonde lady trying to stir the pot like the future Fox News anchor that she is. I came for the Mina takes, she is one of the most respectable voices we have in sports media today. We're lucky she's a Hawks fan.
All the people that agree with this STUPID MOVE, have no clue. Coach Carol is a GOAT. 🐐 There is no replacing him. In his 14 years as head coach he has won more games than ANY other team other than KC and the Patriots!
As a Niner fan I remember angry hawk fans crying to fire him. Bruh Pete was the best coach they ever had. Sucks they fired him cuz he old but best luck to him. I hope Seattle does not hire jim harbaugh.
Don't really care about what some non-Seattle person thinks about the Seahawks, even if they're a fake fan since the superbowl win. Dislike that this video was recommended to me. KJ's thoughts were much better to listen to
So, Pete was a victim of his own success. He makes the playoffs without Russell Wilson in the midst of a "reset" (i.e. a rebuild year), so everyone goes crazy with unreal expectations this year. They also had one of the worst seasons for strength of opponent this year and we knew that going in. They had a different O-line every week due to injuries and lost their best pass rusher on defense as well. Somehow they still get a winning season? That's actually good coaching, but the average fan doesn't have a clue.
Pete carroll, barry switzer & jimmy johnson; i believe that they are the only head coaches to win both an nfl & ncaa championship 👍👍!! Jim harbaugh almost won a title with the 49ers & kaepernick, but lost to his brother john's ravens & flacco in new orleans, la. Are their any other head coaches who have pulled this feat off?!?! I don't think so. Did paul brown sr win an ncaa title 🤔🤔?!?! I think paul brown sr may have did it too, winning a title at ohio state & with the cleveland browns, but i may be wrong.
Who's the a-hole who snickered when Mina said he is one of the best coaches ever? Compared to him none of the correspondents have a pot to piss in, so screw the person for being disrespectful.

Bittersweet, but I’m happy he can retire on his own terms ❤️
barry switzer won with Jimmy's team...
Why does everyone think that Pete Carroll was fired when he’s retiring and still an advisor to the Seahawks and don’t forget he’s executive vice president of the team. Let the man enjoy the time he has for his life.
He’s not retiring…..amicable decision to move from coach to advisor role….
Best Players Coach All-Time
One of the 3 great coaches the Hawks have had. He will be in the Ring of Honor.
Glad I found your channel just subscribed
@@chrisconcannon6490 One of my favorite memories was Hasselbeck tearing apart the Saints defense in that Wildcard Game.
Geno is not THE problem, but he is not the solution
Let's be honest jamal adams was the reason for this. Pete traded the house for adams and completely changed his scheme to fit his strengths and jamal completely destroyed us in every single way on the field and Pete's refusal to acknowledge how bad he really is and was on the field. made both the fan base and management question his judgments. Jamal was the worse decision in the history of this franchise
2nd worst decision. The first one was the call on the 1 yard line
@@martyflores7057 H--ly Sh--t that's funny, bruh😅😂😂😂. Also very true.
Amen, on your comments bout Adams.
Throwing at the 1-yard line was the correct call. Throwing a slant was not.
Much appreciated for supplying an educated take regularly, they should fire Stephen Smith and give you the airtime.
Fans would do the same for Pete….❤
Should have gone Beast mode
Very attractive job, Hawks don't need to many pieces at all, this may be the year you move up and grab your QB to go along with the new regime. Talented young team with dynasty potential.
Dynasty potential? LOL
@@inttrudersyou clearly don’t know Seattle football lmao. We got a good roster just need to fill a few positions.
@@beWARRENed Being a fan doesn't mean being an unrealistic homer.
Dan Quinn will be the coach
Soon as Chicago kept their coach and pulled out of the Harbaugh lottery I knew he is going to Seattle so he can get revenge on San Franciso
Only thought about Gino is that today's top players follow QBs they think will deliver, not teams or coaches as much as in the past.
No sht...they have a lot of talent.. .......GREAT journalism.
He asked ‘will they go with a younger coach?’ Pete is 72. Yeah, I’m pretty sure the next coach will be younger.
You are the absolute best in the business Mina!! Go Hawks!!!
Spot on take Mina, as usual. Love u bb
As do I.
@@TheFrenchPug Dude, I can relate to your pain.
If they stay at 16 there will be zero qbs worth picking that high…..
Coach Pete = Legend
Btw Wink Martindale HC and have him upgrade coordinators with the culture like he did I’m Michigan with some assistants 🤷🏽♂️ 👀 just a take 😂😂😂 🫡😶🌫️😶🌫️😮💨
The player being un-coachable is a much different social issue that might not be able to be fixed by any coach.
Lets get on the damn ball and get the new coached signed ASAP so we get our first pick now before they sign elsewhere, Hurry Up Seahawks
Thanks pete!!
I wouldn't mind seeing what Mike Flores coach this team
They talked about players not protecting the team. Did I hear that right? Who was not protecting the team? I really don’t know.
Much of the defense

Look at his record before Russell wilson and look at his record after Russell wilson.. two years after russell's gone so is Pete..Hmmm
Who are they bringing in that’s better!
It won't be hard to improve. Pete hasn't done much recently. It would be absurd to keep him and expect different results.
Harbaugh
Lots of issues but let's face it, guys: 70 years old is too old to be leading young men mainly in their twenties in a locker room. No need to overthink it.
Should’ve given the ball to Marshall to win the Super Bowl. 😂
Totally ignoring Geno’s record number come from behind wins….
Jim Harbaugh to Seattle?
Mina begged John Schneider to draft Malik Willis....
Yeah no kidding. I stopped listening to her long ago.
You knew this was coming, pete! (Spider-Man 2)
Well, maybe if the front office hadn't traded away Russel Wilson, the last three seasons might have had a better outcome. So now to blame Pete Carol for the lack of results is ridicules.
Russ only gone two seasons….
Blonde lady trying to stir the pot like the future Fox News anchor that she is.
I came for the Mina takes, she is one of the most respectable voices we have in sports media today. We're lucky she's a Hawks fan.
I’d hire Mina as deputy General Manager
Someone snickering off-camera...
I know Mina said a lot of smart stuff, but can we stop and appreciate just how damn beautiful she is! 🥰
All the people that agree with this STUPID MOVE, have no clue. Coach Carol is a GOAT. 🐐 There is no replacing him. In his 14 years as head coach he has won more games than ANY other team other than KC and the Patriots!
Pete should go home to LA and make the Chargers a super bowl contender. He is a perfect coach for the Chargers and for the cheap Spanos family.
This was a great segment until the “robotic” line. Seemed unnecessary. Very sad day for sports with icons like Pete and Saban now gone.
Why not call in an actual person who played for Pete Carroll?
As a Niner fan I remember angry hawk fans crying to fire him. Bruh Pete was the best coach they ever had. Sucks they fired him cuz he old but best luck to him. I hope Seattle does not hire jim harbaugh.
While that would be HILARIOUS it’s probably true that Harbaugh likes his Michigan gig too much.
As a Seahawks fan, I’ve been waiting for this day since 2015!
I’d rather Seahawks hire Nick Saban.
Don't really care about what some non-Seattle person thinks about the Seahawks, even if they're a fake fan since the superbowl win. Dislike that this video was recommended to me. KJ's thoughts were much better to listen to
CUTIE KIMES!!!!!
I was tikd together are putting team officially on the market and no new owner wants to start off by firing Pete Carroll
The second I heard the news I had to see what Mina said
So, Pete was a victim of his own success.
Mina is the best!
Who's breathing and talking over the video?
Who's the a-hole who snickered when Mina said he is one of the best coaches ever? Compared to him none of the correspondents have a pot to piss in, so screw the person for being disrespectful.
Trade up & get Bo Nix !
I know most people agree with me, Urban Meyer or Jeff Saturday most definitely should be 1 and 2 on the list
LOL Love your sarcasm.
Oh Absolutely. Josh McDaniels and Brandon Staley should be 3 and 4.
Don't forget Chip Kelly.
@jackharrist8180 on second thought we should just sign a player coach and jameis winston checks all the boxes
Pete carrol and russ to raiders
schefter always with played out and lazy takes
good thing Mina n others use their brains + know ball 😅
Pete and bill get dismissed but euberfluss still has a job?????
Would be something if Harbaugh goes to Seattle
