This is changing faster. With 2021-22 great resignation, packages in India went pretty high and it's real competitive now with abroad as well comparing living cost. Now people are looking for less managers and more techies 🙂. "If you aren't a manager by 40, you are an underachiever"- this is no longer applicable.

I once had to report to a woman manager in her 20s. She was younger to me by atleast a decade or so. She misunderstood my calm and composed nature as showing attitude and disrespect towards her when she was trying to micromanage me. This made it difficult to have a good work environment till the project lasted.

Most of the employees around me were recently passed out students... It took a while for me to get adjusted and be a part of the very young team.. I'm in late 30s too. The reality is people younger than you make judgement on you all the time, regardless of your behavior. What they don't know is they too will be in your shoes too when they reach your age. I think you're old enough to understand that, so do your best to ignore them. On the contrary to your observations for late entry in IT career, actually there's a huge demand in the AI for developers regardless of the age. Doesn't matter if you started late, you are still fresh enough to step into application development of application development. Being a mother and doing it is not easy, but ask yourself if you're growth is better off in a growing industry than a stagnant industry.

I am at 40 still doing lot of coding, hands-on building large scale systems as individual contributor and always eager, curious to learn new things, but I live in US, and I see a major difference while I worked in India when I was in 20's and working in US in 30's to 40, but one common thing I noticed in we Indians think that we shud be climbing the title/role ladder, but that's not true, gaining specialized skills and in-depth knowledge and soft skills from experience is the key. I have worked with peers who are 5-7 yrs exp who does the work at same level of complexity as I am doing, but the thing is acknowledge each other by learning key facts from both, accept that juniors can do better than us and learn from them, and show the wisdom and share your learning's from experience, another key difference is the depth of vision developed over experience which will bring niche value to the team if applied it at right time and guiding the team to the right directions. "Now that this AI is also taking over" - don't worry about it, instead see how you can use AI to improve yourself and increase productivity and keep yourself unique from team

The inevitable has to come to everyone, until we change our mentality. There is a song of Nachiketa in Bengali "sobar boyes hobe 80".
I have seen in US a person of age 75 still working. In a project in Oracle I have worked with a person in UK who started his career in 1986 and still going well. Age is not a problem but the mentality is.
I have good knowledge on DW, EAI, big data and BI and machine learning and is fluent in all the above subjects. But still many younger generation finds it difficult to get me in the team. I left a organisation just for that. In client interview I showed them from management to devops delivery, but still not considered in the project. It was a new product development from scratch. That means blueprint designing. You have to accept it.
Build yourself in such a way that the IT world have to look for you. I started learning bigdata when no one heard of it. Same with EAI and BPM.
Now a days I am preparing my self for attending tests in UPLR, turing, crossover, and so on. They are tough interviews. I scored in interview in Toptal, but due to bad network the viva got smashed. These are all contractual jobs. But you have to be open.

I don't think it has anything to do with the age but it is more to do with the kind of involvement you show at workplace. I have seen both side of coins. There are people who after a certain age stop learning and usually try to avoid any new challenge given to them. The problem is with such people. The Learning should never stop. If you are learning and being vocal during team meetings, most of people will actually respect you for your wisdom and knowledge.

Age doesn't matter in IT. If you are competent enough to do your job, you will be acceptable. The problem is when you cross 40-45 years your brain seems to slow down and can't work as fast as when you were 25. So you have to work extra hard to break that barrier. If you can do that you will survive.
Another thing is the salary. As you grow senior you expect to be paid more. But one should remember that the salary hike should be with respect to his/her performance and not with the respect of his/her seniority in the organization.
So, the bottom line is stay competent.

But one thing plays a major role hear is - India is primarily service based market, almost all product development and ideation happens in USA or other developed countries. As result of that we have of be on toes to deliver on a high rate constantly which younger devs can do. So they delivery rate is will always be lesser that who is in 20’s or 30’s. There are multiple things going on when a person cross 40 like kids, personal health and many more.

This is not a good change when compared to the traditional approach. We cannot just take excuse saying performance is the key for role selection. My strong opinion would be that the experience need to be valued and given better roles than junior to fix this challenge permanently. May be need to go back to the old age traditional approach.

Job applicants are more in India than the jobs available. Managers prefer to hire a less experienced guy because of the less billing rate with extended working hours and on weekends etc. High experienced guy's billing rate will be high which affects the margin. So they recruit one guy with high experience and a bunch of developers around 5 years of experience. So more work is done at the cost of less billing rate, this also increases companies margin. When there are a bunch of developers available in the market for less pay why do they need 40 or 50 years experienced guys, even if they need how many they take ? So for 40+ guys it's hard to get a job in the Indian IT unless they work for peanuts. Of course few Indians are reluctant to upskill but not everyone.

It is misconception that Managers are superior than developers. Both are different skills and both have equal importance. I saw are managers are more worried to save their job than technical people as they are easily replaceable. When there is a change in higher management managers are first at risk.
If you are technically strong Managers will be your friends to get the job done. Also here in US developers get more pay than their managers.

At this point I am hoping that even if I am to survive in IT by 40, I will be able to have decent savings for the rest of my life. I am 32 an currently saving 70-80% of my salary, not planning to get married and thankfully don't have any loans. I don't have a technical bent but manage to complete what is assigned to me withour breaching deadlines. One day at a time and hopeful.

Well, the advise that one day you will get old will not fly. I would explain the incentive rather - why should I manage a Sr person for my own benefit. For example, when you represent a team that has sr people, you get noticed for your capability to manage diverse people.
Open comms is a fantastic point, so is respect the role .

The technology is shifting quickly and also the expectation is double compared to the last decade. The most important factor is that the employee size is shrinking year by year, as companies are finding ways to reduce the human labor with automated tools. So overall, do not pitch your career directly with IT sector and acquire some domain knowledge along with IT skills as an option to excel in other sectors, like manufacturing, production and retail sectors. The IT sectors may not sustain as a favorable job sector in future due to the growing trend of AI and automation. Unless you are a expert in technical problem solving skills do not rely on IT jobs in future, even if you are a fresh graduate. IT jobs are not for every one.

I have seen people at 57 are functional analysts and even developers. All these things might be true in some parts of India, where people are more authoritarian esp. young guys who become project managers and managers start thinking they are heroes and try to belittle old aged people esp. those who have average looks. Once a person ages his ability to take complex work goes down naturally esp. those roles that need to work 16 hours due to project pressures and weekend work stresses them esp. after COVID issues it is getting worse.

  • @priyamohan9522

Good information Anand. You have highlighted all the points. I think so young managers have to include skill, will matrix while accessing senior employees which would give more clarity.
Also I feel only in India discrimination happens based on age, sex etc..which puts us on the backfoot and which is really bad.

Your video is good as per how the industry has changed in modern days. We all are miising the Basic point that the senior guy is not given the right role and junior people given better roles due to various reasons. We cannot just take an excuse saying the role is given to a person based on performance. The senior mgmt need to wake up and seriously think & act now. The role need to be given based on experience and not just given for other reasond . It is not followed these days in India.

@CareerTalk unfortunately, aged people have to accept junior roles due to scarcity of managerial roles. I strongly suggest by my personal experience that do not degrade yourself by choosing a lower role for the sake of survival. This would impact the future career. A project manager should think of program management but not a Sr. Developer for the sake of survival. This is not the case of acceptance or ego but case of self respect and future endeavors.

Assuming you live in India, there are 1.4 billion people in India. Even if you consider 1/3rd people of working age, there are as much people as the whole population of the US! The reality is that there just AREN'T as many jobs in the world. Chinese youth (recent college grad) are sitting at home jobless. You need a change of mindset. Nobody owes you anything. Either you are one of the top contributors in your domain or you chose to be a generalist. Top contributors don't ask such questions. Sorry for being blunt.

Working with older is the worst thing many company can do, and they destory the career of younger one with their ego centeric opinions. I've this seen this first hand in couple of company big or small, I've worked for FAANG too. For small companies, the older acts as weed. For larger companies, usually there is too much experienced staff which nullifies the effect of 1 or 2 ass holes. My advice will be if you are joining a small company & have this experience imbalance, do not join. I am 30+. This ego personality is more prominent in Indian old developers.
