Sorry to miss an unexpected live! Some thoughts. I love Balatro, lost so much sleep this summer on my steamdeck saying "just one more game". Havent played Animal Well but from what I hear its phenomenally well done. And this is my first point: I hope Balatro wins indie goty, and RGT logic is right there, it cracked the "gold" category, but I really hope Animal Well wins debut indie goty. Balatro is lightning in a bottle, who knows what he does next (blackjack battle royale? roulette survival horror?) while with AW you see a well executed creative work in an established genre with good backing, eg we can expect future good work from them, its a great "debut". Likewise, i dont think Balatro is GOTY material... I love my time with it, but that spot should have gone to something larger, more fully scoped out. Why not Batman, will we ever see a VR exclusive crack that flatscreen ceiling? Last point, while I think Batman totally deserves it and will win VR goty, its a shame of the calendar that due to its late 2023 release Asgards Wrath 2 will lose to the other best VR game. AW2 is actually the better game if you like action rpg as a genre, its as well done as Batman, its HUGE in scope, and is a crowning achievement on a standalone headset. If meta can afford to keep investing in these kind of games, its inevitable that we get a VR game vying for the top slot soon. Thanks for the show all, see you next month!
The voters better use the same logic they used against TOTK not winning last year, "more of BOTW". If Erdtree wins there is a serious FromSoft bias. If it was Elden Ring 2 then maybe it wins but this a DLC. Astro Bot should deservedly win. My game of the year was Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown.

Actually, people thought Black Myth would get snubbed because they openly refused to accept Sweet Baby's involvement in the development of their game. That's why the games media came out against Black Myth, because the games media and SB are in bed together, hence the lower Metacritic score.
How is this a controversy when the "DLC" is an expansion that is longer, better, more ambitious than 90% of the games out there. I find it ridiculous we can't categorize expansions as the greatest gaming experience we've had if it delivers. People are just looking to be made over nothing.
