I understand why the Portal is designed the way it is, but if we ever get a revision that’s more akin to the PSP/Vita that also comes with internal storage, I may actually pick one up.
They for sure have to unlock the cloud stream on the portal to play ALL cloud games. I'd be SO dope playing the classic ps3/2/1 games on the 30th anniversary PS Portal anywhere! Bring Vita games to PS.
There's already some classic games on the cloud streaming beta such as the timesplitter series, daxter, legacy of kain, sly cooper 1, resistance retribution, etc
@BUPMY1 I played for a few hours and didn't experience any problems. I was hoping that cloud streaming would eventually be supported. Shouldn't have taken this long but I guess they needed to make sure it works properly. Because people are paying for a subscription and for the Portal. But I suppose it's the cheapest entry point into the PS5 ecosystem.

I use my PlayStation portal all the time when I travel for work, now that I can stream on it it just makes it so much better. But it's always worked out well for me. Wired connection at home + pretty good hotel wifi, never had an issue.
I bought one yesterday. Love it so far. I've seen a little studder in a game or two but nothing too bad. Cloud streaming works better than I thought it would. Even when I'm out and about and running off the hotspot from my phone cloud streaming works well.
Yeah, it also exists to scratch an itch. An EXPENSIVE itch. I once tried to stream Gamepass without a box, but then it felt pointless because im just practically renting an inferior version
The difference is PlayStation offers the console as the best place to play. Wanna play on PC? Wait for port, it might stutter. Wanna play on Handheld? Wait for catalog, it might lag. Xbox doesn't care of its consoles and playerbase. Instead they want every mom and grandma to subscribe GamePass just because they have phone.
Had the portal from its release and I enjoyed it then and I enjoy it even more now. Even got the 30th anniversary edition. As many have said over the past few months the convenience of being able to play the PS5 will having the tv free for others to watch or for you to watch while gaming is awesome. The addition of cloud gaming is just more icing on the cake for me. Looking forward to the future of the device.
I didn't get a PS portal because of its dependancy on PS5. Now it is getting closer to what I want. I want it to have storage to download games from the PSN library to play natively from the portal without the need for a PS5 nor a WiFi connection.
Once this works for all tiers of PSN, I'll be excited. One of the monthly games on offer a good few months ago, for example, was the Mass Effect Legendary Edition. I'd love to be able to play something of that quality on the go; especially for those that managed to take advantage of the PlayStation Plus Collection. If the portal could play all the digital games attached to a user's account, regardless of tier, via Cloud Gaming, the portal would be an instant purchase for me. As it stands right now? Yeah im still not convinced to get a Playstation portal. You would still need to have the following in order to get it to work: 1. Subscribe to the Playstation plus premium subscription that only offers cloud gaming and those prices are still going to cost more money being spent. 2. You will still need to be connected to a stable internet connection which limits where and when you can play it. 3. You would still need a Playstation 5 console to use the Playstation portal if you didn't want to use the first step that i mentioned. My point is why i would be willing to spend hundreds of dollars for a digital only "console" that has no guarantee that it will work outside of the home when i can get both a Playstation Vita setup or a PSP setup for half the price.
Finally a valid reason to get the premium tier on ps plus. I was waiting for a feature to re-subscribe and the timing is perfect with the black friday deal!
Ive always told myself if they were to allow streaming to the portal I would finally get a 2tb ssd to install games more games (Ones that I cant play in the cloud) and then get a portal finally. I do think they should allow you to stream from the cloud to a phone app too, but i get as a business while they would limit it. Plus I wouldnt be shocked if they were able to give a better experience connection wise on their own hardware. Assuming I get one, worst comes to worst I can always return it. Ill probably get it at Costco anyway.
The biggest issue I have with the portal is the fear of it having stick drift. They should have made the sides removable like joycons so at least you can replace them or the stick modules replaceable (or I dunno use Hall effect sticks?). Otherwise I’ve loved it even before this feature. This is a nice addition (although you need ps plus premium which is otherwise a bad value so far…I’ll upgrade for the remainder 100 days I guess for like 7$ though lol)
Those sticks are actually smaller than the regular DS ones. So there is no way the Edge modules would have been an option unfortunately. But yeah, they should definitely have done with magnetic sensors of some type in it, especially considering how much work it is to get it apart. Not smartphone levels, but still fairly involved.
@@darkwalker19 Well, everything is removable one way or another. ;) You mean they are on their own separated circuitboards I guess? I seen teardowns but don't remember if they were or not.
My main issue with this update is the same as ps plus premium: basically if you don't live in Japan, Europe or North America, this update changes nothing for you. I don't really know why they sell the ps portal in Chile, for example, if you can't take full advantage of it since they don't offer ps plus premium. We have some of the best internet speeds (4th worldwide), but probably Sony doesn't think South America is that big of a market.
Doesn’t matter. The Portal is crap. It uses Wifi 5. Why the hell would a streaming device use outdated wifi technology?!? I literally have 1 GB fiber optic internet and it constantly kicked me or wouldnt connect. I returned it within 3 weeks….i was so tired of it kicking me, then being unable to reconnect, so i have to get up and go physically turn my console off because it has a game running on it, then reboot it, turn the wifi off and then back on on the Portal so that it resets, then trying to reconnect again. The thing is trash
I don't think they will ever offer that, that's why the Portal exist in the first place, to remote play your games from the PS5. Stream your own library direct from PlayStation is a completely different beast.
I had one of these for like a month then sold it not for me, even with this update you still need the highest tier of PS+. Which I’m just flat out not going to do, all I need is Essential. I am happy for the people who enjoy their Portals though.
It's such an improvement, but has anybody had any trouble loading certain games. Every single time I tried to load Blood Omen 1, I keep getting an error saying it can't be streamed (but not Blood Omen 2). It's the only one I've seen so far, and I don't know if it has some kind of issue with the fact that I have that game in my PSN collection and maybe that's creating a licensing error.
That's a very good question. I got mine on day one, I think I needed both systems to communicate with each other the first time around. Maybe after this update it could be different though, since now we have two options, connect to your PS5 or Cloud stream, but I don't have a concrete answer.

I just bought one yesterday because of this update.
I have a genuine question. I left playstation gaming right before they introduce the ps plus tier. I sold my ps5 and ps4 and now I'm gaming mainly on handheld pc. They release old ps games on pc too. I'm planning to comback but most of the games I really want to play are on pc too and I can't even keep up with that. I tried xcloud and it was fantastic and I think I love cloud gaming now because back then with the ps remote play I can't play action games comfortably. If I buy the portal only and sub the ps plus can it work without ever having a ps5? The only game I want to play on ps is ff7 rebirth and I dont think its available on the cloud service
I have good internet, is it worth the pick up?
Spawn needsta share his medicine with Nate. Do ya heat it up in the microwave though?
Loved it from day one
If the PlayStation portal ever becomes essential like the gamepad for the Wii U then I’ll pick one up. But for streaming only absolutely not.
They'll fix the latency. It'll work no different than streaming from your ps5 in a technical sense.
This is pretty cool.
