SO many great lines in this episode: "I appreciate your honesty. Not, you know, a lot...." "Also, I can kill you with my brain." "Well who in the damn galaxy ain't?!" "I've seen you without your clothes on; never thought I'd see you naked." Those are just the ones that come to mind immediately.
Great lines all! Wash: "I'm confused." Saffron: "You're asking yourself: "if I've got the security codes, why don't I go in and grab it for myself?"." Wash: "No, actually, I was wondering... What's she doing on the ship?! Didn't she try to kill us?!" Saffron: "Please, nobody died last time." Wash: "We're in space, how'd she get here?" Mal: "She hitched." Wash: "I don't recall pulling over!" That scene always cracks me up.
At the end, the smiles and snickering from Wash, zoe and Kaley were all real. Nathan had apparently put a picture of Joss Whedon's face on the sock covering his "man parts" :)
I think one reactor summed it up for me when she declared after the first episode, “I like all these people!” By this time in the series we’ve come to love them. I concur with your emotional response to the Simon/Jayne scene. Simon gets so picked on for his ‘civilized’ nature but this scene showed great courage, and integrity. In Ariel, Mal showed Jayne mercy after he showed remorse. In this episode, Simon showed Jayne grace.
Agreed. Mal was absolutely going to space Jayne. That last second (little) bit of remorse saved him. This episode and Jaynestown mark turning points for Jayne's character. This episode and Ariel are my favorites. Though every other episode runs a very close tie for second.
Absolutely epic quote. (I think there are T-Shirts of that quote.) The good cop, bad cop scene with Simon, River and Jayne was also very cool. Inara finally got a piece of the action. I believe this was all Mal (and Kaylee's) plan. But leave it to Mal as a military man to come up with a backup plan, and was able to convince Inara to take part.
Choosing a favourite character is much like picking a favourite episode -- they're each great in their own way. For me, ALL of them -- characters AND episodes -- are my favourite. Firefly is such an incredible show. Thanks, Ande, for taking us along with you on your journey. 🤗
Gonna call it: YoSafBridge had the potential to not only resurface again & again during this series, but also to become part of the crew. One give-away was the moment she shouted "don't look at me like that"! She cared. A bit like how Jayne cared about Simon & River finding out. Great how you deduced from that how he's already changed as a person. He has always been my fav character and I love the way you responded to that scene with Jayne & Simon (and neuro-killer River oc). Cheers from Amsterdam!
Definitely! YoSafBridge would have popped again in a second season. Though I could not see her joining the crew. Too much bad blood there. I think she would be continue to be a foil to Serenity and crew. I could see an episode where she teams up and manipulates another crew to rival Serenity, where they go after the same prize. Talking it personal all the way as she tries to get the prize, as well as hurt or humiliate Mal anyway she can along the way.
You have to recall back at the ending of the Ariel, the last thing Jayne said before Mal decided to save him was, "Make something up. Don't tell the others what I did." He was beginning then to want to be part of a family.
I totally agree with you that it is hard to pick a favorite character because they are all so good. I always enjoy your reaction and love your laugh. And yes you have to watch the movie it does have more answers, action and possible some tears.
I've lost track of how many times I've watched this entire series over the years. Generally once every couple of months. The only good thing about it being canceled after one too short season is that it wasn't around long enough to get bad, or even lose its shine. We got one golden season and a damn good movie, and I'd rather have that much Firefly than none at all.
It's official - you're a Browncoat too. Not being able to decide which episode is the best, contradicting yourself on which character you enjoy the most .... yup, you're one of us now. I've been watching these on DVD (not even blue-ray) for YEARS, and a while back had a moment of insane cackling when I realized that every time the disc (13 episodes on each) episode menu loaded I thought "Oooh, I love this one!" I still can't tell you which is my favourite! Yo-Saff-Bridge was a delightful guest star, along with Badger, Niska (the Shan Yu reader), and the Sheriff of Paradiso, who, had the show been continued, would have been recurring guest characters. One more of the tragedies caused by the mid-season cancellation 😥
We sort of already established that Jayne was ashamed of his actions when he thought Mal was going to kill him and told him not to tell the others what he had done (which may be the only reason Mal did not kill him in the end).
I hadn't noticed until several rewatches, but in her two appearances, we see YoSaffBridge employ the exact same tactics on 4 different people: Plan A - seduction (which works on Mal), but if that doesn't work (Wash, Inara, Durran) she goes to Plan B - kick to the head (works with Wash and Durran, Inara is able to dodge). Then Plan C - run.
Yep, Inara and Mal plotted against Saffron before she was let out of the crate. All the time Inara was bickering, whispering in the hallways was to be overheard, and Saffron gets "dismissive" to Kaylee so she'll explain to her where she could attempt to rip them off at. We also learn subtextually Inara would love to spend less time as a Companion and join the crew on adventures if Mal allowed it. Outlaw Star is a very Firefly-esque, 1 season anime, rarely reacted to. Cobra Kai's character Johnny Larence very Jayne-esque, a based yet innocent man.
@@danharris5999 yep. Though Zoe might be a little technophobic, not wanting to risk putting it in wrong or something. But, since Kaylee was allowing Jayne to try to put it in, and he screwed up because he didn't know what not to touch, maybe Kaylee didn't want the same thing happening to Zoe, and defaulted to "if you want something done right, do it yourself" mode.
One can only imagine how much more great episodes there would have been with those great recurring characters like YoSaffBridge, Niska or Badger. Considering a usual runtime of shows of 4-5 full seasons, they have still been in the phase of establishing the whole universe and all the characters, antagonists, dynamics etc. My guess would be, we would even gotten the return of more characters, like Patience from the pilot, maybe the Sheriff from the Train Job or Atherton from Shindig.

We come in to the series with Mal, Zoe, Wash, Kaylee, and Jayne already a crew, so we think of them as a solid unit, but I believe it's implied at some point that they'd been crewed up for less than a year before Book and the Tams come on board. I think that Jayne has been used to running with shady people who look out for themselves first and working with people who have his back is something he's just starting to get comfortable with. At the beginning of Ariel, he makes it clear that he does not consider Simon and River to be crew. They haven't proven themselves and he sees them as nothing but trouble. When he though he was about do die, he cared what the crew would think of him. Cared how they would remember him. He even spent some of his money to buy the whole crew fresh fruit because he felt bad. He does show some character development during the season, but I also think that some of the difference we're seeing is Jayne beginning to think of the crew as people who matter to him, instead of just people he runs jobs with.

I often wish that we could sit down that dumb exec, who deliberately messed up Firefly to get it cancelled, and have him see just how *everyone* who watches this show loves it. Just so he can see how massively he screwed up what would have been a stellar income stream for the network for the sake of his petty ego. Will they stop getting better? Well, the last episode is one of my two favourites (I keep changing my mind between that one and Out of Gas), so I'd say the answer is no. And we only have a few left. How sad is that?
I often wish that we could sit down that dumb exec, who deliberately messed up Firefly to get it cancelled, and have him see just how *everyone* who watches this show loves it. Just so he can see how massively he screwed up what would have been a stellar income stream for the network for the sake of his petty ego.
And yet again, dear lady, you impress with your emotional honesty and your insight - to read straight off the bat why Jayne would care if Simon and River knew what he had done ... ... ... :salute:
Jayne is a misunderstood character by most reactors. His character development arc suffered the most of all of them , from the cancellation of the series.
Ustedes eres muy guapa, you are só beautyful, você é muito linda.
Si to that.
