omg the cut from jayne saying "I'll be in my bunk" immediately to the preacher saying "I'll go with you" was hilarious
I'm not sure if you mis-remembered, or are referring to something else, but I LOVED the;
Jalyne - "I'll be in my bunk."
Zoe - "Jayne!?! Grab your weapon!"
LMAO!
*Edit: Oh, I get it now. You are referring to Ashleigh's editing job. Yep, that is extremely funny too.
As if we didn't have enough questions about Book to start with...
Lol
Yet another clue as to Book's past?
Lol, that one caught me off guard.
I almost did a spit take
Doc: "I've never shot anyone before"
Shepherd: "I was there son, I'm fair sure you haven't shot anyone yet"
"They took Christmas away." River's comments to Jayne are about how he got played. They (the Feds) took away Christmas (his reward). River tends to speak in metaphor and analogy. You can't take what she says literally most of the time, you have to look for the meaning behind it, because she has insight into the situation due to her mental abilities.
Fun thing about multiple rewatches is that first time around it sounds like River is just speaking in crazy gibberish. Next few times you realize she's speaking in riddles and metaphors about things happening around her. After a while you realize she is stuck in a perpetual state of verbal encryption because that was the only way she was allowed to communicate with Simon in her letters and everything she says is relevant. The whole thing with her 'fixing the Bible' episode was an allusion to the theory that the Bible has a hidden code imprinted in it and she saw that pattern but it was different from ones she'd normally understand.
She's also talking about Zoe and Mal taking Christmas away by stealing from the drug vault.
and many things only get explained later...
like: "Two by Two, hands of blue"
There is a background on the Shepard, but it is not touched on during the series, and I don't want to spoil it for you. I'll tell you after you watch the movie, if you haven't figured it by then.
It also can apply perspective on Jayne's childhood as he had mentioned his father and needing to hunt for a job. River could have picked up on buried memories that he does not share. Jayne's Pa could have taken a loan from a loan shark to pay some bills and get presents for Christmas for the family, but leg breakers busted in and reclaimed anything of value while young Jayne had watched from the stairs after trying to peek at the presents. A loan shark that has someone skipping payments will make an example. (Just ask Han about Jabba.)
Zoey’s expression and “oh” when Mal says “No! No it’s not!!” is in my top 10 favorite moments from the entire series.
13:49 - Ahem, Simon has always been brave. He's just not a fighter. lol
Totally! I mean, he smuggled River out on his own, he obviously was brave enough to sacrifice his entire life and career to save her.
Lol I had the same thought. What he risked and did to rescue Ricer was incredibly brave
He's brave when it comes to helping River, but that's about where his bravery ends, most of the time.
@@aleczrike9647I don't think that's a fair assessment. Ariel is the first time that we see Simon in his element, the rest of the time, he's a fish out of water. In Bushwacked, we see that he's afraid of depending of a spacesuit, but when Jayne tells him that he's needed, he puts it on and heads out. During Safe, even though they've been kidnapped, he doesn't sit somewhere freaking out about it. He rolls up his sleeves and does what he has to do. When they were on Ariel, he didn't hesitate to get in the fed's face and he attacked the second guard, chocking him out after knocking him down. In War Stories, he grabs a gun and joins the others to rescue Mal, even though he doesn't have experience with shootouts. He's just had a privileged life on a modern, civilized planet and has very little experience in the often violent world he's stepped into, so he's reticent and defers to the others.
@@maddwitch THANK YOU! That was such a wonderfully fair and accurate assessment of Simon’s character! Just because he’s terminally uncool (Kaylee: “Hi.” Simon: Open mouth & insert foot), totally lacking in any sort of skills pertaining to self-defense, and is about as badass as a loaf of bread left out in the rain; does NOT mean he’s not brave!
Watching Ashleigh fall in love with this show has been fantastic, she followed basically the same trajectory as the rest of us:
Episode 1: Wha...? I'm not sure...
Episode 2: Okay! I'm getting onboard with this!
Episode 3 and onward: YOU CAN'T TAKE THE SKY FROM MEEEEEEEE!!!!!
I was 100% onboard two seconds after Mal said "Darn" in 'The Train Job'. I pretty literally fell out of my chair laughing.
@@LynnLeFey1 For me it was his first words after "Darn". "Now this is all the money Niska gave us in advance".
You forget, love, confusion that it was canceled, then anger.
@@cobrian45 yup! Then hope. When the crowdfunding started to make the film, my roommate and I both donated and the payoff was seeing the crew on the big screen!
Thing of beauty.
I have to say: the bit
"The captain has to do it by himself."
"No I don't! Shoot him!"
made me literally laugh out loud for a whole minute, and is my favorite Firefly line. This show is comedic genius!
Jayne worked so hard on his line, and he was going to say his line.
Simon is in HIS natural environment. We finally get a chance to see him in his true element, and so he knows what to do and takes charge.
Yes. It was something that the show needed to be seen.
We got a taste of it in "Bushwacked," when he volunteered to deal with the bodies after everybody else was afraid of them. It was nice to see then too.
Jayne saying 'don't tell them what i did' told Mal that Jayne does actually feel regret for what he did, he knows what he did was wrong. And there might be a glimmer of a redeeming quality in him yet. Which is probably why Mal spared him,
My personal opinion is that the events of Jaynestown led directly to his betrayal on Ariel.
Jayne was reminded that he's supposed to be the bad guy. He felt bad about that kid tsking the shot for him, and bad guys don't have to feel bad about stuff. He was trying to recapture that feeling of only caring about number one.
He didn't want Simon to know he betrayed him. Simon was starting to look up to Jayne for trying to "save" them. He might have been feeling remorseful over the kid that got ended in Jaynestown when he refused to stand up. Could be he didn't want the last person on the ship that showed him praise to hate him again.
Jayne had just spotted Shep, now Shep returns the favor...
@@benjin3993 I don't think he cared about Simon's feelings necessarily, he just didn't want Zoe, Wash, and Kaylee thinking bad of him. In Jayne's mind it's the five of them who are the crew, while Inara, Book, Simon, and River are just passengers.
@@cmlemmus494 true, but I think it's not that Simon is holding that approval, just that someone else is. Much like receiving a gift from a stranger. It's still means something, even though not as much as from a friend. I only think this because of his reaction to Simon full heartedly thanking him and Jayne's face receiving it
Kaylee is worried about a lot of things. River killed 3 men with 3 shots without looking, and no one else knows she can do that. Should Kaylee tell the Captain? Especially since the ship is full of guns, and River sliced Jayne for no apparent reason.
One nice touch in the hospital heist, is that when they were emptying out the medicine cabinets, they left a little bit of everything behind, just in case someone came looking in an emergency.
I truly think that Mal WAS about to kill Jayne, but it was when he said "Make something up! Don't tell them what I did." that he changed his mind. It showed that Jayne truly had remorse, he didn't want the others to think badly of him after his death, and so that is what caused Mal's change of heart too.
Or ... he really hadn't thought about what he was going to tell the others and didn't want the trouble.
@@rmhartmanOne is dull and uninteresting writing, that just isn't very good at flowing along with the narrative unfolding. One makes sense, is interesting, and follows the narrative and timing perfectly.
Why exactly would you prefer it to the first option?
I also feel that Mal has the same standards for himself as he does others when it comes to his crew. Weather he likes it of not and with or without the mask of being a hardass, Janye is a member of his crew. No one f's with my crew....not even me.
Maybe not remorse, but shame.
Nah, he doesn't care what the crew think of him and never has. He's expressing that he doesn't want the crew to be hurt by learning what he did. Mal wouldn't spare him for the pride and self-centred act of wanting people to think well of him, instead it's for the compassion he's showing by not wanting his betrayal to come out combined with his acceptance that he deserves the punishment. We've already seen that Jayne is deeply uncomfortable with people thinking good things about him, ESPECIALLY when it's unearned, that didn't suddenly change.
Kayley is 'weird' with River because up until then she had shown no knowledge of guns, and then Pow Pow Pow, 3 shots, 3 kills. That's something to be confused about.
Not only that. River cuts people for no apparent reason. I’d be concerned with her gun skills.
3 shots with her eyes closed. That's what's freaking Kaylee out.
I think it’s the next episode that she explains why she was weirded out. Yes, what you said was part of it, but not the main reason.
@@themonkeytrainer eyes closed after a half second glance.
I mean, if Mal, Zoe, or Janyne popped them, no one would be that surprised. Say if you had several friends who were combat vets. You wouldn't be surprised if they took care of an attacker permanently. The quirky boho waif who has mentioned no interest in guns or fighting doing so with skill and efficiency is going to be shocking.
So something that a lot of people miss in Ariel is that Jane actually does have a change of heart after hearing about the Alliance cutting into her brain. His expression changes, and then he rushes to get them out of there sooner only to back track to his original plan when they get caught to avoid getting in trouble.
And thats reason 14 why I love Jayne
@@Gwenhwyfar7 I have a shirt with his picture wearing the funny hat saying "Thats why I never kiss them on the mouth". :) Met him at a comic con, such a gentle guy, very humble and personable..love his character.
You are absolutely correct about most people missing that. Most people miss alot of the subtle things portrayed in various scenes from this wonderful show. :(
I came here to see if anybody points that out. I ABSOLUTELY took it as a change of heart and an attempt to back out of the deal but he didn't foresee the feds coming in the direction they exited (the back way if I recall).
River stabbed Jayne because he was wearing a Blue Sun tee-shirt. She took the labels off the cans because they had Blue Sun labels. Blue Sun was the corporation that messed with her brain.
From what I heard, it was supposed to be a big multi-season plot thing that would get slowly rolled out....
Obviously, they didn't have time to expand on it
Spoilers Dude!
@@chiefcrash1100%, multiple seasons planned and penned out and we got this cut down series instead, such a shame to what it could have/ should have been.
Wow - I don't know that I ever caught that before.
@@fuzzball67Well, its not something that was ever truly explored in the series, so not truly spoilers. It's only known by fans after the fact through supplemental media.
When Wash said “one less husband” he wasn’t implying he wanted out of his marriage with Zoey. He was implying that her relationship with Mal made it like he was a second husband.
He was also implying that Zoey was acting more like a "HUSBAND" than a wife.
When this show first came out, they were having the public debate about work wives and husbands! Like cop partners, etc!
It could go either way, but I tend to favor the Mal as 2nd husband interpretation.
@@rmhartmanya, that was always how I interpreted it too
@@fn111557 I don't think so. Wash respects his "warrior woman", not his "wife". I agree with @stvbrsn
Kaylee in the gunfight at Niska's base is some of the most realistic human acting in the entire series.
Honestly, the more I rewatch this series the more River's ramblings actually make sense.
When you realize everything she says is truth.
Right?
Which is why I said Ashleigh needs to watch the series over again right after seeing the movie - it will all make so much more sense...and certain bits will hurt more...
@@skwervin1 No kidding....they did a great job of putting it all "together"
Is it worrying that everything she says is making sense to me?
Everyone always judges Jayne so harshly for what he did, but I'm gonna play devil's advocate here, and try to explain why from his perspective it was completely justified.
Imagine you're just chilling and someone suddenly attacks and tries to kill you for no reason whatsoever. Wouldn't you call the cops and have them arrested?
Now imagine this happens at your workplace. You've been with the company for a long time and you get attacked by a new employee while you're on break. In response, your boss not only refuses to call the cops to report the crime, but also scolds YOU publicly for being upset that you were attacked. Wouldn't you think "fuck this job!" and quit right on the spot?
Now imagine you work on a ship in the middle of nowhere. There will seemingly be no consequences for the employee who sliced you open, and you're now forced to live with them for days, maybe weeks before you even get a chance to leave this job and the ship. The whole time you're on edge because there's no telling if the coworker will snap and attack you again, and you can't even complain about any of it, because everybody acts like you're in the wrong for being pissed. wouldn't you think "Fuck these people!"?
Now imagine you get a chance to leave the ship, leave this job, and these coworkers who clearly don't care whether you live or die, and cherry on top, you find out calling the cops on your attacker can make you super rich. At this point, can you honestly think of a compelling reason why you wouldn't want to do it?
10:20 "What does cracking mean?" It means to 'crack open' the chest cavity, a process which typically involves a surgical instrument called a rib spreader, which... well, you place it in between a couple of ribs, and crank the handle to force the ribs apart so the surgeon can get inside. Once you wake up, it'll hurt like hell, but at least you'll wake up.
You just grossed out Ashleigh. lol
@@davidbeppler3032 Surgery is pretty gross, tbh. The interior of the human body is disgusting.
@@f0rth3l0v30fchr15tit's orderly and beautiful.
When Jayne asked Mal to "make something up", he wasn't covering his ass - he wanted to shield the crew from being hurt. Jayne is a little chaotic, but he's loyal.
Wait till you see what he does with his share of the money (in ep 12), or one instance where he gets banged around the ship because he's making sure everyone ELSE$ is strapped in.
Kaylee "no power in the verse can stop me" = cute
River "no power in the verse can stop me" = truth
SCARY truth, because up 'til then River was unstable, so how do you feel about someone who was unstable, unpredictable, yet can kill 3 people dead with 3 shots without even looking?
@@wal6377 Unpredictable, unstable and Genius. I mean killing some thugs with a handgun is no big deal in the Galaxy scale. But River can disrupt power supply on some planet, or kill the government or just anything for example provoke an all out reavers invasion. She is the most dangerous being in the Galaxy.
I think some of the best writing in TV was the Mal/Jayne conversation at the air lock.
Acting, too.
This episode is what really cemented my love and appreciation for Shepherd Book, and his response to Zoe's question regarding him taking up arms is top tier.
He is a Shepherd, but, he wasn't always one.
"Then tie him up, and hold him over the volcano's edge. And on that day, you will finally meet the man." -Shan Yu
Mal didn't exactly tie up Jayne or hold him over a volcano, but close enough. In that situation Jayne's last thoughts were what effect his betrayal would have on the crew. Mal (and we) finally met the man.
Also worth noting that right after Jayne points out rescuing Mal (the guy that knows his secret) would be suicide, he went and got kitted up to save him independent of the rest of the crew.
The reason Mal was talking shit to Wash was to keep Washs mind occupied, so he can withstand the torture.
Fun fact: when the crew sees Mal's severed ear, the Mandarin Book rattles off is one of the harshest curses the language has to offer: 和畜生雜交的臧獲, which roughly translates to "filthy animal-fucker". Preacher can CURSE when it's appropriate!
but only in Mandarin so the censors don't bleep it
From what I've read, 'code blue' is basically a way of discreetly saying that a patient is in life-threatening condition and needs immediate resuscitation - basically what's shown in this episode. Since Simon's disguised as a fellow doctor, it makes more sense for him to step in and help - which he only did *after* the other doctor called the code blue - than it would to just stand back and let the man die. It helps that Simon really is a doctor, unlike the other Serenity crew members; his knowledge, skills, and experience allow him to act with confidence, which helps convince people that he's supposed to be there (as opposed to his posing as a buyer with the overseer in "Jaynestown").
Exactly, and that Simon isn't known wouldn't really be that big of a deal. He could be recently transferred, on rotation, a visiting specialist, etc. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
Code blue specifically means the patient is in cardiac arrest, and it's very much an all hands on deck situation. It's why in most hospitals even the janitor has a CPR card. If you are in the area when a code blue is called, you head over to see if they need an extra pair of hands.
When she mentioned Tucker and Dale and recognizing Alan Tudyk made me wonder if she recognizes that the actress that plays Inara also plays Deadpool's girlfriend
Notice the Blue Sun logo on Jayne's shirt when River cut him.
As far as Kaylee being weird with River, you gotta remember River has more or less been an innocent child. Sure, she's been weird and creepy, but not exactly dangerous. Her attacking Jayne was brushed off as a result of her abuse/conditioning, or that she doesn't know what she's doing. But this is the first time River has intentionally harmed/killed anyone, and it's possible Kaylee was deeply unsettled by what River did, and how River didn't seem to understand exactly what she did.
To be fair, Jayne was honest about his loyalty. He said he'd stick around til he got a better offer.
Doesn’t stop him from being a dick… 😏
Yeah, but someone whose loyalty can change in a moment really isn't someone you want watching your back. And since that's exactly how Jayne came into his employ, I can see why he's a little worried.
Do we actually think he betrays them if River doesn't cut him up and prove herself a danger to the crew? Argument to be had that she did it knowing what he was going to do, but equally so that she caused it.
and i think the fact, that when river slashed jayne, everyone was woried about river, nobody cared for him, i would think he, feltalone, the only one to see the problem river poses.
and so he decided to get rid of the problem alone... as clearly nobody would listen to him.
but i think when he learned, what they did to her, and when simon rescued that patient at the hospital, he already started to get second thoughts about ratting them out...
you just have to watch jayne´s face, when simon saved that patient....
micro spoiler:
there was an actual reason for river to attack jayne, other than"it is jayne"...
@Waytothedawn63 River attacked Jayne because of the shirt he was wearing.
Two by two, hands of blue.
This was the day when Jayne thought the money was good enough. And it sure was interesting.
Being ashamed of your actions is the first step to repentance. Facing death -- and he knows Mal is serious about it -- Jayne's last request is that no one else know about his betrayal. In Mal's eyes, that's enough to earn him a reprieve.
Mal "Why didn't you turn on me, Jayne?"
Jayne "Money wasn't good enough."
Jayne "What're you so mad for? It's not like I turned YOU into the Feds!!!"
Jayne didn't make a connection between the amount of money and turning on Mal because he didn't see turning in Simon & River as turning on Mal. Not realizing that turning on any member of the crew (himself included) & turning on Mal is a distinction w/o a difference was the very reason that Mal wanted him off the ship.
Mal "You turn on any member of my crew, you turn on me. Since that's a concept you can't seem to get your head around, you have no place here. You did it to ME, Jayne & that's a fact."
I think Jayne knew he wouldn't be returning to Serenity after turning the Tams over. It would've been too suspicious. The money would have to be enough to avoid Serenity & her crew for some time. Maybe even enough to retire. Enough for whatever or what all he needs it for.
The reason (or at least part of it) that Jayne felt remorse was the realization of what it means to be a member of Mal's crew. He's never been, or never believed that he had been, part of a team/crew that would do for him what Mal was willing to do. Perhaps that's part of the reason Mal let him live & remain as part of the crew (on probation, of course). He recognized that Jayne, finally, got his head around the concept of what being a part of his crew means. Not getting it was the reason Jayne had to go, some indication that he understood was why he got to stay. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
@@becca1189 That's an idea. I haven't really considered _why_ Jayne felt the remorse he did. I'm not sure how I feel about your suggestion, though. I think giving him a motive takes away from the purity of the action.
Best overall explanation of Jayne's actions I've ever seen.
River talks in complete metaphors:
They took Christmas away - Jayne feels dissapointed.
Don't look in the closet either, it's greedy - Jayne shouldn't have let Greed make him betray the rules.
War Stories is by far my favorite episode. Action, humor, and Wash finally gets to be a hero.
"A big damn hero!"
"The next time you decide to stab me in the back, have the guts to do it to my face." One of my favorite quotes from the whole series.
Best editing cut... Jayne: "I'll be in my bunk." Ashley: "AGAIN???" Book: "I'll go with you"
Haha, caught that one too 😅

Frankly, Asheligh, who wouldn't go to their bunk after that?
They're both gorgeous! 🙂
Who here didn't think Ash was going to give a "same tho" ???
Shepherd is a real preacher but he wasn't always a preacher. No spoilers, but here is my (wrong) guess. I figured he was Mal's opposite in the war, probably an officer, and probably a good one. He won the war but realized he was on the bad guys side, so he retired to a monastery and eventually became one of the brother monks himself. When he finally started to make peace with himself, he knew it was time to leave the monastery and do some good in the world to atone for the bad he had done. I was wrong, but it's a good story and it fits.
You really should read "A Shepherd's Tale". it's a really interesting story.
Yeah I agree. Maybe not an officer per se but placed somewhere in Intelligence very high up where there may not even be ranks, like a Director etc.

This was exactly my thoughts when I first watched the series.
I makes logical sense.... until more complex events and such make you pause...
Not only was Wash in Tucker & Dale vs Evil, he was with Heath Ledger in A Knight's Tale!!
And The Chicken in Moana..
And a pirate that can dodge a wrench.
He also was a cold-blooded killer in a couple episodes of Justified.
And K2SO in Rogue One
And currently an alien in "Resident Alien".
Forget Pippy Longstockings, you’re Anne of Green Gables.

Nah; it's giving shieldmaiden energy
I was actually impressed by how Nathan Fillion and Gina Torres (two extremely attractive people) managed to convey a believable, complete romantic disinterest in one another in that final scene. 😄A few more episodes to go and then the movie! I can't wait. It won't answer all your questions, but it IS a good movie.
If you haven't already seen it, you should add "Dr Horrible's Sing Along Blog" to your list of comedy shows. It's nice and quick and while you will probably have to edit out most of the music, I think you would love it. It stars Neil Patrick Harris as aspiring supervillain Dr Horrible, and Nathan Fillion as his superhero nemesis Captain Hammer.
OMG....I ADORE DR.HORRIBLE! Huge Fillion, NPH, and the works of Joss Whedon MASH UP
Hard agree!
Dr. Horrible is a nifty little project. His brother and then fiance want to fill some downtime due to writer strikes. They thought doing a song blog would be fun and come up with a premise. They bring in Joss. Who then just goes crazy expanding the project far beyond initial intents - calls in a bunch of folks he likes working with (as well as some advice from Falicia Day's experiences creating The Guild web show) as well as a few favors for costuming, props, and locations (and a winner of a Monster Makeover remodeling TV show). Essentially doodles together this amazing little low-budget passion project. That just drips with fun.
Slither with Nathan Fillion for Hallowbeans!
"And these... are not The Hammer"
Someone else has probably said it, but if you rewatch the series, you'll realize that River isn't just spouting gibberish...it actually makes sense once you know what's happened.
I really like how they handle the reveal about River in "Ariel". She doesn't want to be a pain in the ass, but she's fighting her own trauma injured brain. It's taking everything she has. I think anyone who deals with mental illness or trauma can relate.
She's unable to "filter" ANYTHING. It's amazing she's able to function at all.
Some people deal with their mental illness, I on the other hand revel in it.
Fun fact the part thrown just before they found the ambulance is the part they needed in the last episode.
I love when Zoe says "take me sir, take me hard" it cracks me up every single time!!
"Oh, hey. Free soup."
The soup was also a reference to what Saffron said to Zoe in "Our Mrs Reynolds" when she cooked dinner to Mal.
It's not very clear, but I think that Jayne got second thoughts in the hospital. Yes, he was going to sell them out, but when he saw Simon save the patient, and then understood what had been done to River, he was beginning to have regrets. That's why he wanted to leave earlier, to avoid the feds, but they ran into them anyway.
And you have to give it to him: He's an asset when things go down and you have to bring the guns out.
No, the change of plans to head out the back was HIS changed plan to meet the feds and turn them in, unfortunately.
I've seen a few other people mention this interpretation of events and I have to disagree. He told Simon that the time to meet Zoe and Mal had changed and they were leaving early so that he could go deliver them to the feds, collect his money and still meet up with the others. He didn't try to avoid the feds he went to the back door to meet them. Mal even asked what he was doing at the back door. That's how he figured Jayne had double crossed them. He did feel some conflict towards the end but not enough to change his plans.
No, you don't get rid of Jayne. 😆
He's a great catalyst for interesting drama and plot dynamics. Not every character in a show/movie HAS to be wonderful and super-likeable.
AND that's the narrative reason for it. On point.
So, imagine you are Kaylee, your mentally disturbed best friend looked at a situation for just a few seconds, shut her eyes and shot 3 men dead. I think that would freak me out too. So i can't really blame Kaylee for being weird towards River. But i think you'll understand it more in the end.
I know you have to decide where to cut scenes and stuff, but was sad you cut Mal saying "Are you ready to seel the real me now?" to Niska. The tone and his expression are a bit terrifying to me. A depth of Mal we hadn't seen yet.
Fantastic review Ashleigh! I love that you are loving this. Off to watch the full length reactions on these now. 😊
AND then that SAME mentally disturbed friend, looks you dead in the eyes and says with complete confidence and clarity (no sign of instability), "Nothing in the universe can STOP me!"?
I know Summer Glau is a very slight girl. (former ballerina) But that line reading gave ME a chill up my spine!
To River, shooting those men was the same as Kaylee chasing her for an apple... a game. Kaylee won with the apple, River won with the gun, and winners say "No power in the 'verse can stop me."
Jayne showed Mal there was a little hope for him by being ashamed of what he did and not wanting people to know.
I think it shows that, despite his crude and selfish behavior, deep down he DOES care what people think of him.
...And that *that* request mattered more to him, at that moment, than trying to plead or bargain for his life. Faced with the prospect of imminent death at Mal's hands, he accepted that he deserved it; He just asked that it not be disgraced as well.
My interpretation as well with an additional caveat: When he asked "What are you going to tell them about me?" it put Mal in the position of having to tell the crew what he'd done to Jayne. And despite the fact that Jayne was like that annoying cousin nobody really wants at family get-togethers, he'd still been with them long enough to be considered 'family'.
“Cracking him” means cracking his chest open to get to his heart
"I am a leaf on the wind, watch how I soar."

Mal had every intention of letting Jayne die, but he changed his mind when Jayne said "Don't tell the others what I did", which I believe showed Mal that he actually cared about what the crew thought about him and that he actually didn't want to betray Mal or the original crew. He just doesn't really view Simon or River as part of the crew yet so he has no qualms about betraying them.
Yes, after watching it a dozen times or so (I have the box DVD set) that is exactly how I interpreted that (or maybe heard Joss say it in commentary, lol). Cheers!
Plus River attacked him with a knife for no reason...
YES!! My thoughts exactly. He was fully prepared because he betrayed them. He only changed his mind when Jayne showed a redemptive quality. He accepted his fate, knew he was about to die, but didn't want the crew to remember him as the one that betrayed them. That sounds like a soul that can be saved.
You might say he got to meet the real Jayne
@@MultiPolarWorldCo-op
River was psychic and unstable. Jayne was wearing a shirt with the logo of the company who tortured her, and she also likely knew he had thoughts of betrayal.
I agree that it was motive for JAYNE doing what he did, but Jayne wasn't very self-aware of how he treated them, let alone how he THOUGHT of them, which River would have had unfiltered access to.
It was a self-fulfilled prophecy of sorts, having those kind of thoughts around an unstable psychic.
I loved the part of the War Stories episode when Mal said "Okay, I'm confused. I'm angry. And I'm armed." Lol
Mal was not amused, lol.
That reaction pretty much describes Mal in a nutshell lol
First, this isn't a spoiler. If you pay really close attention to Jayne in an upcoming episode and what he says, you discover why he seems so greedy and rutess. Also, in the first episode, when Kaylee got shot, Jayne was watching her being operated on. It's almost like he views her as a sister.
The dialogue in this episode is just so good it’s easy to miss. It seems people aren’t used to such good writing. In particular, the torture scene when wash says “screw you”, and Malcolm responds get in line, that’s such a carryover about their argument about Zoe, that’s just , really great writing. When Zoe realizes they’re running late, and comes down about the time, Jayne saw Inara and the counselor, and he says I’ll be in my bunk, but then Zoe says, grab your weapon, those little jokes in the dialogue are just great.
Mal saw that Jane was ashamed of what he did by asking him to not tell them the truth. It was a redeeming moment
"I'll be in my bunk." "I'll go with you."
PERFECT editing.
Something I like to bear in mind: Inara is a professional. Her job is to make each client feel special. But that doesn't mean we should believe a word she says to them. She told Fess Higgins she wouldn't have come for her father. And maybe that's so. And maybe it isn't. She tells the counselor she feels really comfortable with her. And maybe that's true. And maybe it isn't. She told Atherton all sorts of nice things, I'm sure. Made him feel comfortable to ask her to stay on with him permanently. And we know that wasn't true. The only one she makes uncomfortable is Mal, and we're pretty sure that most of what she says to him about she feels isn't true, either.
Can't remember what episode it was in, but Book tells them at one point 'he wasn't always a Shepherd', which to me implies he had a pretty dark past and becoming a Shepherd is kind of his atonement for that life. Doesn't mean he forgot about that life though, so he's very knowledgeable about stuff people don't expect a Shepherd to know about.
He was a plain clothed cop with Barny Miller.
He had a graphic novel telling his backstory and it is well worth checking out.
Books book is called A shepherd’s tale.
I sent Ashleigh a copy of "The Shepherd's Tale." It was in this past Sunday's unboxing video. I told her not to read it until after she's seen "Serenity."

Fun fact! When in junkyard wash throws a piece of trash. That is the same piece that broke in the last episode. The catalyzor.
I often wonder what kaylee would have said if she saw wash toss it 😂
"Now that y'all pointed out he's from Tucker & Dale..."
Notice how fast he bounced back from torture? Wash poured a beer on it 😉
Someone has surely mentioned it by now, but if you haven't heard, Inara is Deadpool's girlfriend.
We knew you'd love Firefly. That's why we wanted you to watch it
In a later episode, you'll understand why Jayne covets money. Yeah, he's not a fan of Simon or River, but he's the muscle of the crew.
I always described him as a guard dog.
Jayne is one of my favorite characters. Flawed characters make stories more interesting and allow for growth. Love your movie reactions and so glad you made it here. Welcome to the Browncoats!! ❤
Jayne is, in most ways, a very simple man. Jayne, in his underlying motivations, has a fair bit of complexity that you have to tease out of background hints. When you’re all done, I’ll tell you my full opinion on Jayne.
Jayne is awesome! He's chaotic neutral/good. You could see in the first episode how much he cared about Kaylee being shot, so he does care about others.
I like Jane because there's so much opportunity for growth. It's a shame the show was canceled.
11:30 “How do we know there aren’t security cameras in this room?”
Because if there were, security would busting in about now.
Don't read too much into Book and Niska both referencing Shan Yu. It's rather like how people today in different professions have read Sun Tzu's _Art of War._
Kaylee is nervous around River because it's, let's say, unusual, that with only a brief glance she could then kill three men with three shots, with her eyes closed.
for some reason - that is the least disturbing things she's done to me lol
@@awkwardashleigh Perhaps least disturbing, but about totally physically impossible.
Kaylee now knows what River can do, and that scares her, rightly so!
@@awkwardashleighit was the eyes closed and then repeating the line Kayley said while they were playing.
Yep. And Xiang Yu (the Xi is pronounced "sh" was indeed a famous historical figure, there's an excellent Wikipedia article on him that is worth taking a look at.
If you rewatch, River makes a lot more sense when you know what's coming. Her comments about Christmas are for Jayne who thought he would be getting a reward and got arrested.
No, we're *not* getting rid of Jayne!
He's part of the *crew* dammit!
Gorram it!… 😊
The truth is, Book wasn’t always a shepherd. And his past is… checkered to say the least.
That moment of vulnerability as he thought he was about to die, and the only thing that came to his mind right then, that was a turning point for Jayne in the show, and what gives so much gravity to the Malcolm's decision.
The coffins are Sears car-top luggage racks
“I’m lookin forward to learnin more about the Shepard.”

IMO, Out of Gas, Ariel & War Stories is a BLOCK of TOP-TIER episodes! (War Stories being my absolute FAVORITE of the series!)
Although, to me, there are no "bad" episodes. (Just different levels of Good.)
I do love that they showed how competent Simon is when he is in his "own environment". (a core world Hospital in Ariel) This shows that he is only awkward/ INcompetent because he is constantly "uncomfortable" being outside his "comfort zone".
Also, Mal only spared Jayne because he showed genuine concern what the rest of the crew would think of him after he died. Which means, on SOME LEVEL, he "cares" about them! Which is something Mal can "work with".
Filion can go dark when he wants to. There are not a lot of people that are normally the happy silly type but when they go serious you know to back off.
It's NOT ALWAYS just the quiet ones, sometimes the funny ones can have a REAL DARK SIDE as well!
Oh definitely! There was a particular scene in Castle (that was about his daughter Alexis… don’t want to spoil) that was so good because Nathan played it sooo intensely ❤
@@BigDamnHero74 There's a lot of Castle to try and dredge through in my memory. Care to at least name the episode?
@@rmhartman It was Target… so good!
He was pretty dark in Buffy too
I love Jayne's euphemism "I'll be in my Bunk."
It's so gross in a fun way
EXACTLY
My favorite line......
And hey, at least he knows well enough to do it privately. For Jayne that's a big step. Think Starlord's comment about his ship in GotG.
Lol, that line has been used so much in jest in my household!
It's actually a really important plot device for the episode. Jayne says it twice, showing how horney he is all of the time. But, when presented with the possibility of Mal and Zoey sleeping together, he thinks it's an "unsettling" thought. Mal and Zoey being a thing was such a ridiculous idea that even Jayne hated it.
All for the series wrapping up on a Wednesday and our lovely Ashley watches the movie Serenity that following Friday say Aye!
You can´t get rid of Jayne. Every member of the crew is aspects of the parts of Mal´s soul that he lost during the war.
I'm used to the early hate for Jayne from people watching the show. The dislike of River is unexpected.
Since you've said in this video that you're watching episodes 11 and 12 immediately, I wanted to shed some behind-the-scenes knowledge about episode 12, "The Message." Apparently, shortly before making episode 12, the cast and crew found out that the show had been cancelled. And the sentiment on set (including the musical choices) were that the whole story felt like a goodbye to the show, more than just a goodbye to the character in the plot. I believe the episode had been written prior to the news of cancellation, but then the sorrow of the show ending bled into the filming.
Was thinking more Ashleigh With An E 😃 Ok, now I'm done. 😳 WTF River?! 😦 True that! 'Clear' 😃 Great episode!
I'll be in my bunk - 😃 Think Ashleigh needs a minute 😆 Mal & Wash having a bad day! 🙁
'Baby don't hurt me' 😃 'Take sir take me hard' - 'that's downright unsettling' 😃
Kaylee's not weird with River because River saved her life, but because River showed an unexpected superhuman skill in shooting three opponents who were under cover, after only a single glance, and with her eyes closed. Kaylee's scared of what River can do.
Jayne has been an extremely valuable part of the crew. Doing almost every dangerous job they needed done. Jayne could have turned them in at any point. He didn't until River sliced his chest open. Remember yelling WTF RIVER! and saying you don't blame Jayne for saying they should be kicked off and Ariel was as good a place as any to leave them? And saying he made a good point that it could be anybody else next time? Would you have the same feeling if she sliced open Kaylee?
Kaylee is afraid of River now. She has always been her biggest supporter and proponent she is just an I nocent kid. Now, she just witnessed her peak around a corner, asses 3 threats, then fire just 3 shots in less than a second. All of them kill shots. Something Mal, Jayne, Zoe or even Book couldn't do. And this 14 year old girl showed absolutely no remorse. In fact, she treated it as if it was exactly the same as playing a game li,e they did earlier. Kaylee realizes she is not just the little girl she thought. Now, the girl she had just witnessed randomly and with no provoking, slash a crew members chest, show she could most likely take out the entire crew if she got her hands on a gun.
Great reactions.
Ariel
I love this episode. Simon is more confident because Ariel is his world. Mal knew who Jayne is (ie: pilot and Out of Gas). The final scene with Mal and Jayne was amazing.
War Stories
This is another amazing episode. Wash never understood the war buddy relationship. I assume Wash was never in a war. The banter in this show is amazing.
Acc to Alan Tudyk, his head canon was that he flew for the Independents, got shot down in his first mission and spent the entire war in prison before being released at the end of the war, thus he never really fought
I never heard that before. Thanks.
Jayne: I'll be in my bunk.
Ashleigh: Ew, Jayne, you're disgusting!
Same, though...
Haha you & Jayne really are a match made in.. somewhere 😂
#TeamJayne
About your dislike for Jayne. Besides the fact he has some of the best lines in the series, I think he had the most change in who the audience thinks his character is. Or at least you learn more about why he's so mercenary. It's very subtle so I hope you catch it.
Jayne "I learned my lines, goddammit, I'm gonna say 'em" Cobb
I have seen this a bunch of times, but I don't remember feeling big Fugitive vibes before (like, as in the Harrison Ford movie) in the scene where Simon ends up saving the random at the hospital.
Yeah, there were a few times during these 2 episodes that I seemed to be unfamiliar with, and I have watched the series multiple times. I guess I need to go back and do a rewatch on Hulu. 😊
"She married you" is probably my favorite insult.
I . . . wasn't gonna mention Pippi Longstocking. Never crossed my mind.
Yours and Kaylee's reaction to River shooting those 3 guys was 100% opposite. 😂😂
