Abstract Realism Techniques// Mixed Media American Bison Painting

- Hey friends!
I recently watched a documentary on the American Bison which people often mistakenly refer to as a buffalo. Buffalo are actually a completely different species with larger horns, shorter fur, smaller heads and don't even reside on this continent. I was really inspired to paint a bison after learning their history. I was unaware that there were once 30- 60 million bison roaming the plains of the United States and Canada. That was until the 1800's when the west was under European conquest that the extermination of the bison began. Between 1800 and 1889 bison were hunted to the brink of extinction with the population dwindling down to less than 1000 individual animals. This was of course mainly to cut off the food supply of the plains tribes and push them off of their land. Not only was the bison a source of food for the tribes, but bison also provided hides for warmth and shelter, and bones for tools.
The American Bison has made a comeback though. And their numbers have grown substantially although nowhere near the tens of millions.
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed the video! I was unable to do a voice over because I fell ill. I hope the titles and video were somewhat effective at explaining what I was doing. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to leave them in the comments!

@@lydiabroderick867 You’re welcome!!
You are beyond my favorite UA-cam art channel!! I love to paint but I struggle with perfectionism so sometimes art doesn't feel fun. You are inspiring me to try abstract style art because it's not meant to be "perfect" but instead it is so unique and beautiful. Thank you for sharing your process with these and for being an inspiriation!!
Could you share where you get the script stencils ? I see your links for the letters, dots, diamond, but I have been having trouble locating script fonts myself and i love the look they give.
Hello and Thank you!!! Here is the link for the script stencil I use.

I love tour mixture of techniques great imaginary images of abstraktion and realism ….but I would have liked to have a close look in normal tempo on how you make the corners when you streich the canvas 🙃😊
I will do that. Thanks Lis!☺

My favorite! LOVE it! Now you've gone and gave me so many new ideas!! ❤

Thank you Julia!!!❤
Your art is so awesome! I'm so glad I found your channel....thanks for the creative inspo!
Always a pleasure watching your creations evolve. Are they planned out or spontaneous?
Hi! Nothing is ever totally planned out. I usually have a solid idea for the focal point. For instance "I want to paint a Bison" but the background happens spontaneously. So a bit of both.☺
This was very inspiring! Thanks for sharing your work!
I'm new here and love finding hidden gem artists on YT! Wonderful art. Informative and amazing design.
Thank you Diane!!!
You are incredibly talented and SO inspiring! Everytime I watch one of your videos I want to get into my art space and create! ✨🦋
Thank you! That means so much to me. ❤❤❤
Your artwork leaves me flabbergasted Lydia!!! I am an avid follower. Thank you for your time. As I cannot use spray paint could it be done with dabbing paint? Tia.
Hi Freda! Thank you so much! You can probably get a similar effect with a sea sponge.☺❤
Absolutely so beautiful ❤
Thank you!!!❤
So cool, Lydia! Does he have a name, or can I call him Mr. Bison? I like this step by step from stretching the canvas to the completion. You seem to add different techniques every time… I can’t keep up.😀 Great job!
You can call him Mr. Bison☺ Thank you mom!!!❤
Stunning Lydia ❤ What powerful animals, you depicted that beautifully in this piece 👌🏻💖I know they were hunted to the brink of extinction at the turn of the 19th century. Have they stabilized?
Hi Catherine! They are definitely making a comeback! It's hard to find a source for their actual numbers. I know in Yellowstone alone they have around 5000. I'm not sure how many are in other pockets of the country. It's a far cry from the millions that used to roam the plains and prairies. Many have been released back onto the plains though.☺
Great video! Feel the graffiti aspects a lot in this one. Missed your chat though 💞
Thank you Kelly! I was sick and couldn't talk for this one. I'm feeling much better now and working on a new project!❤❤❤
@@lydiabroderick867 Glad you are feeling better & Looking forward to your next creation. You make it look so easy, love your style!
Amazing. I am so fascinated by your work. I’ve been working at developing my watercolor skills over the past few years but I’m finding myself being helplessly sucked into an abstract acrylic vortex. I need an intervention! Somebody help meeeeeeeeee
Hi Lori! I love experimenting with different mediums and there's no reason not to. I will tell you though... I have always been intimidated by watercolor.☺
@@lydiabroderick867 watercolor isn’t easy and after three plus years I’m only moderately proficient. It’s my first love but I’m thinking I need to expand my horizons. I wish I lived near you so I could come and just sit and watch you paint for days (and ask a zillion annoying questions). I’m a bit overwhelmed with the idea getting started with acrylics - any advice? Books, classes, an artist who will take me by the hand and help me fill a small cart at the nearest Dick Blick?
Amazing. Do you paint using a reference photo? ❤❤❤❤
Yes... I will usually use several different reference photos of the same animal to see all the angles. Unsplash.com has a great selection of royalty free photos which is helpful if you can't take the photo yourself.☺
Hi Lydia, you are the most inspirational artists I've ever watched on UA-cam. So I have a question, what sort of spray paint do you use? What brand?
Thank you!!!❤ I use Montana water based spray paint. There's a workshop pack of 16 colors (small cans) on Amazon.
@@lydiabroderick867 Thank you. I should have asked you that Q before I bought the iron lak 😬
Beautiful! Just curious did you attend art school or are you self taught?
Thank you Brenda! I did not attend art school, but I grew up in an extremely artistic family so I wouldn't say I'm self-taught either. I would call it a self-curated education. ❤
