Michelangelo's "La Pieta" inspired Mixed Media Painting

- Michelangelo's "La Pieta" is my favorite sculpture of all time. I decided to create a Mixed Media Painting inspired by this sculptural masterpiece, with the focus on Mary's sorrowful face.
In 1497, Michelangelo was commissioned by a French Cardinal (Jean de Bilheres Lagraulas) to create a sculpture for his future tomb in St Peter's Basilica.
"La Pieta" was sculpted from a single block of Carrara marble which Michelangelo claimed was the most perfect block of marble he had ever worked with.
Although I am not a religious person, (I'm not even Catholic) I find this beautiful work of art incredibly moving. This is why I decided to add it to a mixed media painting that I had already started.
I hope you enjoy this video! - Навчання та стиль

When you got to the point of "she sculpted a bust of Lionel Ritchie's face!" I BURST OUT LAUGHING!!! When the video first came out, my friends and I were laughing at the fact that a blind girl could possibly imagine that jawline!
Right?!? She was freaking amazing!!! I couldn't have come up with that jawline!😂😂😂
Hola Lidya, me encanto el proceso de tu pintura, y me gusta mucho tus comentarios al principio y al final de tus videos😅, todos los éxitos!!!🥰👏

Amazing work! And Amazing that you painted upside down for us to see...that's crazily Amazing. 😂
Thank you so much 😀
I get greek vipes, but I can't really tell why. Nice to hear the story of why and how you fell in love with sculptures. I had this expirience when I was 13 and we where on vacation. We vised a glass manufactur and it blew my mind how they worked with hot, flewend glass and turned it in to breathtaking things, art peaces, sculptures and bowles. I am in love with glass ever since.
That's so cool! We actually have a lot of glass blowing in my town. It was known for it. The theater group here was called the glasstown players. We have a glass museum and everything. You should visit!!!😊
@@lydiabroderick867 oh that sounds great. I am going to Italy in a couple of weeks and I am going to Muran (THE iceland of glass blowing) I am so excited. But I surly will look up the glass blowing town. Maybe I am able to travel there as well. Thank you.
Amazing. Thank you for the video

Love it, it radiated reverent as well as modern.
Thank you!!!
Wow! The base colors and patterns make her look like an every-mother. She could be anyone. Hey, my daughter made me a blue cup quite like that red one. It has a face on it (creepy clown face). I treasure it. It sure has to be more than 40 years old.
Thank you so much!!! It's funny how if your child made something, it doesn't matter how strange or creepy it is. You treasure is always.❤❤❤❤
@@lydiabroderick867 Absolutely!
You use so many more colors than u mention Mz ma'am 😝😝... Im on to you... We need a pow wow. Out of all the crazy painters you by far are my soul sister

Thank you!!!❤
I just got a chance to watch the full video (I was on the road when you first uploaded it): the sea-sponge technique is very interesting! I love that you painted this upside-down too, it just feels right :) (I don't know why, but...it does haha) The double-exposure effect is cool too--almost like there's another painting under the surface. I really like Evan's sculptures too! The angry fish one is intriguing :)
🤣 I can’t even stand it sometimes Lydia! 😂
Im a tad older. I began my life in the 70’s but the 80’s were my jam. I remember flashes of that video but it didn’t make an impression on me like it did you. I’ve gotta go check it out again. Lol!
Now, UPSIDE DOWN?!? Phenomenal!!!
Incredible! ❤️
Thank you for sharing and clearing up somethings. Turns out I have been doing mix media backwards😜Oooops!!!
Fantastically talented artist!!!!!!! love all your work, just wish I had a small portion of your creative inspiration.

Really amazing, Lydia! I love the multidimensional, "double exposure" effect that you've created here. Thank you for letting us witness the process. So very cool.
Thank you so much!!! I'm so glad you like it!!!

Thank you Greg!!!
Awesome video Lydia!! ❤️❤️😊 I only saw glimpses of the Lionel Ritchie video, so I have to get on that 🙂. Love you Lydia ❤️❤️🥰🥰
Stop me...now that I found you I am just watching one video after another...until my eyes are crossing. (Oh the stuff looks good now. 🤣😂🤣) Seriously...you are a mad visionary!
👍
WOW! just stumbled upon you a few hours ago and your work is awesome! The juxtaposition of your elements I guess, are so alluring that I could watch you paint for days. And that’s coming from a fellow abstract, realist artist here. I learned a lot of new things from you that I did not know before, so I hope you do read this, and Yeah I’ll let you know keep up the great painting. I’ve watched all of the paintings that you have done(on UA-cam) and excuse I my dictating here. Anyway, I hope you’re doing well and post more. I really would like to see more of what you create, you seem like such an upbeat-person, and that you have a lot of new things that you could show fellow artist, like me, and I’d really appreciate that. Thanks a lot bye J. Shane.
P.S: I’ve thought of doing a UA-cam channel… should I create one? :)
I literally cackled out loud when you said Lionel…what are you, sister from anudda mister circa 8th grade 1983? Hello?! I felt that video before you even told me which one it was😮
😂😂😂 That's AWESOME! It's one of my favorites!
uauuuu
Love it won’t put hearts because I I’know you don’t like it but my heart is full
Read my little note :)
I think it great, I think it was gorgeous and I loved it. But maybe without beehives on her face,
I’ve always been told to never use oil paints over acrylic. Are you concerned about the oil paint releasing its bond with the acrylic substrate? I love your work!
Actually, it's perfectly safe to use oils on top of acrylic just not the other way around. As long as the acrylics are completely dry it's no issue to put oils on top.☺
If you weren't such a good artist, you would have a wonderful career in TV I'm sure. So entertaining! Thank you for sharing your wisdom, I absolutely love your art! It's very much how I would love to paint, hence the gratitude for your sharing of process. May I ask, did you attend art school? You have a wonderful knowledge on paints and colour. I come from a family of artists but only starting out around 60 and am self-teaching. I do wonder though, if art school would be good........
Hi! I didn't go to art school. I grew up in a family of artists and loved drawing from a very young age. I love your name by the way! Thank you so much for your kind words.❤
Yay!!! That gives me sooooo much hope!! In fact I tried your methods today - just the beginning of it…. But I have watched lots of your videos now and am taking everything including “going with the flow”and I’m 😆 excited thank thank you 🙏🏽 ❤
*taking everything IN*
Well... now I feel that my previous "Holy Mother of God" comment in regards to your David painting was premature and misplaced. Nevertheless, your work is spectacular. So creative and unique. Plus, you are so dang funny. Thanks for sharing.
Amazing piece....incredible work. Are your pieces on display anywhere???
Thank you so much!!! I have several in Mashpee Commons @ Steeple Street Music Academy. 😊
Coolness...just around the corner...I'll have to check them out. Thanks
I love your paintings, and I’ve watched many of your videos. I’ve been making art since I was two years old or less. But when painting I either do an oil painting or I do an acrylic painting. Usually oils. I know that gesso is an acrylic. But I’ve never tried painting oil over acrylic the way you do. When I told a couple of artist friends about your paintings, they both expressed concern that the oil would peel off at some point. Of course in this one it’s just a glaze. When I said what about gesso, that’s acrylic, they said thats specially formulated to be absorbent enough for the oil to stick to. What are your thoughts on this? Obviously you’re not worried about the oil peeling off. Have you had some of your paintings for years that you’ve done this technique with?
Actually painting with oils over acrylics is a very common practice and oils adhere well to completely dried acrylics. Many artists use this technique especially for creating an underpainting or grisaille with acrylics and then completing the painting with oils. I appreciate the question because it was a question I had when I first saw the technique being used. Rest assured the oil paint does not peel off. I think the main rule is not to paint acrylic over oil. That would create some serious problems. 😊
Really LOVE this one! I know this slightly older post but wondering if it is for sale.
I suffer migraines and found you randomly with only one eye open lol
Love your sense of humor!
Quick question regards to painting… why use oil paint glaze opposed to acrylic?
Hi Diane! Thank you! This one is for sale! I use oil glazes because they give me more work time. The colors are rich and easier to mix. It's my preference. The same effect can be achieved with acrylics. Blending with them is just more work.😊
@@lydiabroderick867 Thanks I’ll give oil glaze a try!
what is the size of painting?
@@dianebartonart it is a 24x30.😊
@@lydiabroderick867 do you have a website/email I can message you on?
@@dianebartonart I'm trying to build a new website. My email is lydiabroderickfineart@gmail.com
How long have you been painting? Did you go to school to learn your craft??❤
I didn't go to school, but I grew up in a very artistic family and was always encouraged to be creative. I have been creating art since I was young, but I worked mainly with charcoal (portraits). I only dabbled with paint back then. I didn't start painting seriously until sometime after I turned 30. I'm 43 now. I know... Long response, but hard to pinpoint how long it's been.😬😊
Very beautiful, but the honeycomb effect was just too much for this specific portrait. The background was perfect without it. ( thats just my taste but I find this need to add in too much fluff just detracts from the actual painting, instead of enhancing it) You are clearly talented ! I see this technique taught at the Milan art institute and really think it has just been overused.
