- Selecting arrows can seem a bit overwhelming. No matter if you use compound or a traditional bow, with a little research you can effectively select arrows to match your specific draw weight and style of archery.
Arrow spine is the first step in the right direction in finding the arrow that's just right for you. All manufacturers have a recommended spine chart to help you out.
Arrow GPI (grains per inch) and GPP (grains per pound) also play a role in proper arrow selection and setup.
All of this information helps when bare shaft tuning your arrows, helping to maximize accuracy and efficiency of your arrow flight. - Спорт

Easton is the king of arrows and bolts. Back 8-10 years ago when i was shooting my crossbow i robin hooded 8 bolts into each other at 50 yards. No it was not free hand.
I fully agree too that first you need to have form and consistency. After you get that down pat now arrow tuning really helps. Awesome video.

Hey Scott! As usual, great video; very informative. If every archer took these points as seriously as you do, I'm sure they would see a marked improvement in their shooting. I've been into archery since I was a kid in the early 60's and I got my first recurve (Ben Pearson "Pony") when I was 13. Back then, I was happy just to hit what I was aiming at, all this technical stuff was a complete unknown back then. Since then I've upgraded my bows and I've built/modified my arrows accordingly, so this information comes in very handy from a tuning perspective. Thanks again for a great video. A great explanation, I'm just getting back into Archery after about a 20 years break. Got my daughter a compound and going to get back into building my own arrows again.

To my knowledge it’s the same with bolts and arrows.
The finished weight that you get from pre made arrows and bolts is with the standard 100 gr tip.
So 350gr is with the 100 tip.
Pretty good explanation. I shoot aluminum, carbon and wood arrows. I’ve found gold tip 500 in 35-55 are hard to beat. I shoot 45-48 lbs on my bows and stick with about ten gpi on all arrows for three-d. Hunting arrows I beef up with heavier inserts to shoot a 500 grain arrows, works great. Good video Scott.

I am a fan of GT arrows for sure. I’ve been wanting to try some 600 in GT for my asiatic bows but can’t seem to find them long enough. I would need at least a 34 or 35 inch arrow for what I want to do.

@@ScottWinters What the heck, I didn't want to bother you but, Oh well. Here it goes my brother... I have 3 tradbows. 2 long bows and one recurve. I've shot gold tip traditional 500and600 hundreds for Quite a while... Recently I purchase 1 doz 500s new... and notice their color is lighter (No biggie) but the finish is not quite as smooth.... Have you noticed that? Also noticed they were Quite a bit louder At Prime time quiet... Because of not as smooth... Sliding across shelf.... So, I returned them... Showed them to my local dealer Alongside a couple bundles of the older ones I previously purchased from them... and they agreed.... So I've been doing some experimenting and found out I fell in love with the good old Very reasonable black with the red label Gold tip Hunter 500 spine arrows. There 7.3 grains per inch.... Bare shafting out of my 45#
28 1/2 " draw they fly tail high But Perfect left and right...By moving knock up or down slightly it doesn't get any better than where it's at, At 20 yd bare shafts hit a few inches lower than fletched.... It's a bear kodiac magnum 52". ....A little phoenikey I know, but I love it....it's always seemed to shoot the heavier arrows tail Hi.

( I don't understand it maybe you can help there)?.... When I shoot fletched/field points and fletched/broadheads they Both hit scary, scary perfect at 20 yds... That's the Max I can get where I live unfortunately... For me, I mean scary perfect LOL because I'm not that good...🤪 I'm talking from the front of my garage door .... Why in the world does Goldtip ONLY make the 500 red label Hunter in 30" Long????🤨 With my other 2 bows they're too stiff🙄 I Would like to keep the arrow weight Real close to the same. Pretty hi FOC. 300gr Up front....

arrow length, full shaft 30". Total weight 550gr. So my big question Scott is can you point me to an arrow that's close to to the 7.3 grain per inch and 500 spine that comes in 32"? No bother at all my friend. I struggled with the short 500s as well. Try the GT Hunters in a 400 spine. You can get those at 32.5 inches long and I have purchased them close to the grains per inch you mentioned. I actually have some of those tuned to my 40 lbs bows and they shoot great. They are not the red label, but GT is usually pretty consistent throughout.

I do like my GT Hunters, but I am finding other offerings are great as well. Linkboys are great carbon shafts as well, and the longer length opens up build options.

Hey Scott, I know it's an old video to be commenting on at this point, but I have an interesting situation involving arrow spine vs. arrow weight. I purchased a dozen carbon arrows from Sportsman's Guide a while back, with 350 spine to be used in a 50-60 lb. recurve w/ 30 in. draw . The spine is indicated on the arrows. I also picked up a dozen carbon arrows for my son's bow from Amazon with a designated 500 spine for a 30# recurve, same draw. Based on the sellers, it's probably safe to assume they all came from China, but quality control in this case, may be a bigger issue than anticipated. So here's the situation: the one dozen 350 spine arrows have an avg. arrow weight of 402 gr. (incl. 100 gr. field point). The 500 spine arrows have an avg. arrow weight of 562 gr. (incl. 100 gr. field point). Wt. vs. spine seems to be just the opposite of what I would have expected. I may have to trade with my son so I'm not shooting a severely under-spined arrow from a bow with a 60 lb. draw weight. I haven't checked yet, but I'm wondering if there's a formula to estimate arrow spine from the arrow length and weight.
DS good to hear from you. I don't think you have to worry too much about this. Spine is calculated based on flex of the arrow over a span of 28 inches using a 1.94 weight suspended on the arrow. Spine is really used when determining what draw weigh lt your bow is shooting. Too light a spine with excessive draw can snap the arrow when the energy is transfered from the limbs to the arrow.
. Shooting a 350 spine out of a 60 pound bow you should be just fine. This is also the same for the arrows you purchased for your son's bow.
Weight is not really a concern unless you go to far below or too high above the recommended grains per pound for you particular bow/draw weight.
For example, your arrows are 402 grains total weight. Based on that you are in the neighborhood of 13.4 grains per pound at 30 pounds of draw weight. The 500 spine arrows are somewhere about 16 grains per pound based on 30 pound draw weight.
The general consensus is arrows need to be between 8 to 10 grains per pound to be safe. Of course this is subject to each one's likes and arrow building techniques.
Lighter arrows give a faster flatter arrow flight, heavier arrows tend to fly a bit slower and drop off quickly in flight.
Further more, I have some goldtip arrows that are 400 spined. There are a few that are 7.9 gpi, 8.6 gpi, and 9.8 gpi. They all shoot about the same.

Now I know how people feel when I tell them about the difference in guitar string gauges, brass wound, coated, etc. I feel there’s going to be a lot to learn here. Pretty exciting. I do like the recurve bows They remind me of an acoustic guitar verse an electric. Old school with a little more effort to learn and more of a challenge. They just seem more natural. Compounds are too technical and industrial. As for long bow, well I’m not at war with an army and going for crazy distance lol. Thanks again I’m learning a lot before my purchase decision.

I shoot the same weight whether hunting or target shooting. I try to get a minimum of 10 gpi or slightly over. Better for life of the recurve bow as well.
My bow has 70lb draw and 31 inches. No damn clue what weight arrows to get. And should I focus on grain or spine? It’s so confusing lol
Great channel , I recently ordered a sinoart black hunter long bow 45# I am a 29 if I'm not mistaken haven't received my bow yet but I think I will be around 47 or 48 lbs could you recommend length and spine . It will be strictly for hunting . Thank you sir
Chuck, thank you for your time, I appreciate it. At that draw weight you could could use either a 400 or 340 spine. If possible,, I would see if you can measure the draw weight at your specific draw length. This would give you the right information you need to select the correct spine for your particular bow.
I use goldtip hunters and they come full length at 32 inches. I would purchase a few of each and then tune them to your bow to see which give you the best arrow flight.
There are a few other things to consider as well. What weight tips will you use. The most popular choice is usually 125 grain because you can keep weight consistent between broadheads and field tips.
Are you going to use Fast flight or a dacron string on the bow? Either work great but each produce a different arrow flight. Fast flight acts like a sledge hammer when it transfers the limb energy to the arrow and can create a weak spine in what would normally act like a stiff spine using dacron string.
I know that seems like a lot to take in. I would definitely try a couple of each to see what initial results you get. If you need any help along the way feel free to ask whatever questions you may have. I hope you have a great day my friend.

A higher GPI is not going to have more velocity as you stated, it will in fact have a lower velocity of course because it weighs more

As I understand it, the trade off is you lose a little velocity with the heavier weight but gain more kinetic energy in the end, providing you don’t over do it on weight. Finding the acceptable balance or trade off is part of the tuning process.

Great.Mine is 12 gpp traditional bow.I have arrows 510-520,500 spine.shoots straight.Would like to and 10-20 grains to the arrow.How do i do that.Wouldn't adding 25 more to the tip weaken it to much?Need your input.Can tell how they shoot in my video.
What about western hunting and compound bow hunting. I shoot 75lbs with a 470ish grain arrow that’s about 15 % foc. I’m looking at going lighter in GPI for faster arrow fight with 200 grains in the front. 75 grain halfsert with a 125 head

You could use a full length 340 or 400 spined arrow with a 50 lbs bow. I think I would try the 400 spined. You could possibly do a 500 but you would most likely have to do some arrow tuning. Couple of things. What's your draw length and what length arrow are you considering?
My draw length is 28 and I want purchase 31 in shafts.
@@rjhelmick3381 At 35 pounds you have a couple of different options. a lot of charts are showing a 31" arrow shaft with a 100 grain field tip shows a 400 spine. same for a 125 grain field tip. Gold Tip shows a 500 spine at 31". As long as you don't cut the shafts down you will probably be in a good range with either of those spine weights. If you find that that are a bit stiff in the spine you could add a weighted insert to get a bit more dynamic spine (arrow flex) when shooting. Gold Tip has nice 50 grain inserts that i use for my arrows for my 40-45 pound recurve/long bow.
How to tell if you have a weak or to stiff spine? Take a few shots an notice how the arrows are hitting the target. If you see the nock of the arrow pointing to your left the arrows is too weak. If the nock of the arrow is pointing to the right the arrow is too stiff. You can fix a stiff arrow with front weight, but you can only fix a weak arrow by cutting it down to stiffen the spine, and you can only cut so much off an arrow before it gets to short to safely shoot. I hope that helps.

At 35 pounds I would go with a 600 spined arrow. This should give you a good starting point. You could go with a 500 spine but you will have to do some arrow tunning to get them to fly correctly. Not saying they won’t work, they will need some attention. Of course, I’ve pushed a lot of different spine weights through my bows, a lot of trial and error.

@@ScottWinters I appreciate that advice, I was just curious on total arrow weight and circumference of the shaft, i of course love pounding targets for practice just want my setup closest to hunting weight when using broadheads, most who hunt laugh at my 35# adventures but hey I like em close, and a well placed arrow I feel does the trick at that poundage, I've tried 40 # bows and enjoyed them but there were also that felt too heavy for my comfort, when ordering online it's rough but figured I'd be better off shooting something I knew I wasn't over bowed with not knowing how smooth the draw is on the BH at that shorter length, I appreciate your willingness to help steer me in the right direction. Truly appreciated, would you run the 600 at 30 " or leave full length, so many options lol, I just don't have the ability to remove inserts and cut down arrows so I figured waiting and searching for info a few days could save me many many more days trying to tune, only tuning I'm good at is tuning in to your videos 🤣🤣🤣

Different arrows are good for different purpose. For example My 50# draw weight Fekete Bég Hungarian bow shoot notoriously better inside 220 yards by 500 spine arrows by 500 spine and 385 grain weight. That is the lower end for 50#. between 220 and 270 yards the harder 340 arrow with the weight of 416 grain is proven to be the best so far. By the way I specialised on shooting military ranges and target areas around a flag on the ground or man size and shape 2D targets. But flight archery arrow re scary light weight. Around 123 grain to be exact. Nope! That's not my thing! But this particular bow the master who build it shot 540 yards. Archery is not so easy as marksmanship by rifles.
