    Just catching up on this video as well (I also joined your FB page recently). I just want to emphasize how helpful all your videos are, as they explain things so clearly. The diagrams of muscles are so important. One of the things we Bell's Palsiers suffer from is lack of information, so your diagrams help us to understand, for example, WHY the mouth and the eye are moving at the same time (this is the stage I've got to now).
    Like another commentator here, I've been extremely disappointed in the lack of help and even understanding from other medical professionals (GP, ENT, neurologist). Thank you for all your time and effort.

      To be fair, synkinesis will happen, no matter what. What dictates if you will end up with synkinesis or not is the degree of nerve injury, and the damage done to the nerve which will dictate how the nerve heal, with aberrant regeneration or not . Lack of early mobilization which leads to severe tightness, reinforce and worsen synkinesis. So in your case, even if you had started therapy early on, you can still end up with synkinesis.

    Awesome info, thank you! I 've been seen by ENT doctors for synkinesis, and the best they could offer is Botox. I am disappointed how little medical professionals know about BP treatment. I learned a lot from your videos. Thanks again.

      Botox is a complete part of treating synkinesis, in addition with facial rehabilitation/neuromuscular retraining. Not by itself. But it can be really helpful. Have you had proper facial rehab?

      no I cannot. there is no cookie cutter exercises that helps everyone with synkinesis. Your case of synkinesis is unique. You need to be assessed correctly and taught witht he right thing to address your presentation.

    What type of doctor would someone need to go see?

    • @ButheauPhysiotherapy
      @ButheauPhysiotherapy  Рік тому +1

      Definitely an otolaryngologist that specialize in facial nerve dysfunction. And a trained facial specialist physiotherapist/physical therapist

    I have a Q?! What's the difference between
    Facial, Bell's, synkinesis

    • @ButheauPhysiotherapy
      @ButheauPhysiotherapy  2 місяці тому

      Bell's palsy is a type of facial palsy ( facial paralysis) that is idiopathic. Synkinesis is a complication of facial palsy that can happened depending on the extent of the original nerve injury, and which involved involuntary movement of part of the face with another movement. One o the most common complication of facial palsy.

      I am putting ice on my face and after that a hot towel, later I stretch the muscles with a glove and I end the therapy with a massage around my face. But I haven't seen my face better Than before. Thanks for Your advices

      @@yvonnecardenasmoreno8060 Do not put ice on your face! it makes it tighter. You should heat, massage then stretch in that order.

      yes it is synkinesis. You need help to figure out how to approach and treat your unique situation ( no one synkinesis is the same)

    is it too late to treat synkinesis if it happend back in 2012?

    • @ButheauPhysiotherapy
      @ButheauPhysiotherapy  Рік тому +1

      No it is not. I help people that have had synkiensis for 5, 15, 25 years. There is very likely something you can do to help and make some improvement. Most people have not had treatment for it.

    I've had bell's palsy since I was 10 yrs old. I am now 40, so 30 years! . I have synkinesis... So are you saying that I need to massage my non affected side more than the affected side?
    I massage and stretch both sides, but I focus more on rhw affected side. Have u been doing it wrong?

    • @ButheauPhysiotherapy
      @ButheauPhysiotherapy  Рік тому +1

      That depends on your presentation. I don’t know anything about your presentation. You need to have facial movement assessed by facial specialist in order to determine the best course of action. Stretching the non affected sides is important in beginning generally… maybe not so much later… but again, each case is unique.

      @@ButheauPhysiotherapy thank you for replying. I find here in the UK we do not have much facilities like yours. I've been Dr's and asked for specialist help, they just give me piece of paper to facial exercises without really caring, saying I have had it so long that it won't get better... This makes me very sad. I've resulted in having botox done in the tight muscles in affected areas to feel better about myself and paid lots of money.
