- Point of clarification: I know that Tim's range is massive (5 octaves but I didn't remember that at the time). The 2 1/2 octaves (high baritone to bass) range that I mentioned is specifically the opening lick. I realize that my wording was unclear. Thanks for all the comments though!
Time to add Home Free to the collection! Here is a reaction to Stand By Me - Home Free's Version. A wonderful cover of the famous Ben E King song by the group Home Free. A nice cover with some very fun chords.
Make sure to listen to the original artist as well!

the best harmonies in the business, hands down
I did certainly enjoy listening to some of those chords 🙂
Thanks for watching!
Home Free is the best of the very best 👌
Thanks for watching!
Tim has a five octave range that's very impressive... and this was their version of the song...not a copy. Rob is lead tenor....Austin is high tenor. This was done beautifully as usual for them.
Yeah, I knew his range was large, I just didn't mention how big it was. I think the 2 1/2 octaves I mentioned was just that one run. Thanks for watching!
Home Free is the best a cappella group out their in my opinion.
They are definitely very good. Thanks for watching!
Home Free does not replicate, they emulate!
In my opinion Home Free is the best
💯💯💯
Absolutely 💯 ❤
💯💯💯💯👏❤️
Yes indeedy!
💯
I love this great classic song from Ben E. King back in 1961. The Home Free guys did an awesome version as always. Love their arrangement on this cover. Great vocal leads by Austin & Rob. Tim's bass really stands out for me in this one. And Adam's tasteful vocal percussion is on point. They are my favorite a cappella group out there.
It is a good arrangement and original song. I'm glad they are your favorite. Thanks for watching!
You appear to be obsessed with how Home Free's version is not like the original, or not how you would expect. Of course not, they are inspired by the original, not copying it. They are known for the mastery with which they honor originals while taking liberties that suit their own vast talents and skills. The beauty of Home Free is not skin deep. If you prefer a more classic genre, I recommend their interpretation of "Helplessly Hoping" (Crosby, Stills and Nash), or "Do You Hear What I Hear" (a Christmas classic).
I know it's not going to be the original, I was mainly pointing out "this is where it is different" or when they went in a direction I didn't expect. Voiceplay has some covers that are very different from the original. Maybe I'm just more used to the types of changes that Voiceplay makes?
I think I watched "Do You Hear What I Hear" last year and enjoyed it.
Thank you for watching!
Glad you enjoyed this amazing rendition by Home Free! They never disappoint!
Suggestion, please continue your Home Free journey but perhaps a little less commentary. 🙂
I will almost certainly be reacting to them again in the future. 🙂 Sometimes I talk a lot, sometimes I talk a little, it just depends on what stands out to me. I think my longest reaction is like 22 minutes and the shortest is closer to 15. Thanks for watching!
Austin doing the high bell tones. His range is higher than Rob's.
That's cool. I thought Rob had a higher voice, but I don't watch Home Free enough to really know the details. Thanks for watching!
Tim Foust bass to high baritone range nope try higher than that 😂😂
He has a 5 + octave range if you want to see his range check out his solo Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow/ Stay or Austin Brown ft Tim Foust My Maria .
Austin Brown is High Tenor
Rob Lundquist is Tenor
Adam Chance is Baritone/Bass
And 'snowglobe". 😂
@@momD612 oh yes that one too😂
I know Tim's range is quite large, even if I didn't remember the exact range. I was referring more to that specific passage as being 2 1/2 octaves.
Someone else pointed out that Austin's voice is higher. Rob's voice sounds like it's higher? Different voices sound different, for example when I sing a C3 it sounds middle of range but when a true tenor sings a C3, it sounds low.
Thanks for watching!
One of the songs I have been listening to for as long as I can remember. (I'm from 1963) First the LP, later I always had it on one of my cassette tapes, then I got the CD and in recent years I usually have it on one of my playlists. Although many versions had been released in the meantime, it was usually the version by Ben E. King or Otis Redding. But from now on it is the version of Home Free that is on my playlist and no other. Alternating the lead between Austin's powerful voice and Rob's silky soulful voice just sounds so beautiful and fantastic. Then the unparalleled vocal percussion, truly phenomenal. The great bass and beautiful harmony are the finishing touch.
It is a great song. Impressive that it has replaced the original in your playlists. Thanks for watching!
@@musicalmark Yes, I am 60 years old and you sometimes want something different. 😉 Then this is, in my opinion, the best replacement. I like the sound of Home Free. ❤️ For them it is not just hearing but also feeling. And when I see them too, it really makes my day. Their appearance, their personalities, etc.
I've seen them live and they're really that good. So pure, so steady and with a lot of humor. 🥰
But Ben E. King is still on my R&B playlist, I just don't listen to it that much at the moment.
I love that Adam lends his beautiful tenor to the breakdown and the last "Ooooo." The handoffs between Austin and Rob on the lead were very clean, too.
It was a good cover. Thanks for watching!
I just want to say, respectfully, that *reacting* and *analyzing* are two different things, And you’re doing the latter. Don’t pick it apart, just enjoy it 😊
In my opening script I do say it will be a reaction and analysis, so... 🤷♂and part of the enjoyment for me is analyzing and pointing out all the little details
Thanks for watching though!
Tim's range is 5 octaves my friend. A0 to G5.
I know his range is quite large, even if I didn't remember the exact range. I was referring more to that specific passage as being 2 1/2 octaves. Thanks for watching!
Love this. Their harmonies are exquisite. Try Helplessly Hoping, Brothers in Arms, One Man Band, In the Blood to hear more incredible harmonies.
I'll keep them in mind. Thanks for watching!
❤ Beautiful cover. Great reaction. 🤠HF 🔥
Thank you for watching! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
It's wonderful that Home Free has brought back Ben E. KIng's 1961 classic for new generations. Austin Brown has a solo version of it on his channel as well. Of course the singing, harmonies & beatboxing are terrific - they always are. No glitz, no theatrics - just a beautiful song, beautifully sung. I never want to hear an exact duplicate of an original song - it's been done already.
I definitely liked the cover as well. I point differences not because I want it to be the same, but to say "here is a difference" or because they change they made is not a change I expected.
Thanks for watching!
He obviously doesn't know, or care, but yessss!!! 😉🥰🥰
Thanks for watching!
For the 10th anniversary of their 2013 1st place win at season 4 of the Sing Off they're revamping all the songs they performed then, first in video then the release of an album, on CD and vinyl. This is one of three or four so far and they're all great.
Nice! I didn't know that is what they were doing. That's really cool. Thanks for watching!
It is apparent you have not listened to Home Free much as you said Tim's range is from deep bass to baritone. Check out his solo of Stay / WillYou Still Love Me Tomorrow. Other way, Austin is higher than Rob! Another one to check out is their cover of the Troll Song by Justin Timberlake (Can't Stop the Feeling)
Yeah, fully acknowledge that I don't listen to them as often as some other groups.

I am such a sucker for Home Free's bell tones 🔔🔔🔔🔔🔔 And I love whenever Adam becomes the 5th vocalist!
Just gorgeous❣️🎼🥰🎶❤️
#HomeFree
Bell tones are always great and I also always enjoy when the vocal percussionists sing, they usually have such good voices. 😄
Thanks for watching!
Quite often, a high steady tone is Adam. And that alone indicates mutli-tracking. But you are right, there is no way to do bell tones, bass, and harmony at the same time with 3 voices. And dropping the rhythm section for a verse allowed Adam to join in on the harmonies.
I have seen Whitaker referenced before when people have been dissecting HF's harmonies. They often have "off-normal" progressions.
I understand preferring other groups' style to HF's, because I am the same way, but it is HF that I prefer over PTX or VP. All three groups are excellent, but they do have vastly different styles.
Have you ever listened to Whitaker? He does mainly traditional choir pieces, but he is very modern in his style. "Sleep" or "Lux Arumque" are probably some of his most well known pieces. They are all great.
Nothing wrong with preferring HF over the others. Agree that they are all amazing in different ways.
Thanks for watching!
@@musicalmark only just a little, to see who/what was being referenced.
@@nancyholter5646 He is a good composer 🙂
#HOMEFREE....love this!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for your reaction to Home Free, hope you do many more reactions to this group. I would appreciate it if you would slow down a bit, I had trouble keeping up. Thanks again !!
I do sometimes talk very quickly. I probably should slow down in the future. If nothing else, you can always click on the gear in the bottom right of the screen and move it to 0.5 or 0.75 speed. I actually usually go the opposite way because most people talk slower than I listen 🤣
But thank you for watching!
How do I say this while still trying to be nice...You might want to become a bit more familiar with Home Free.
Also, their covers aren't exact copies of songs. They are improvements.
I will almost certainly be watching more in the future, I've only just started reacting to videos. 🙂
I don't expect covers to be exact copies. I was more pointing out "this is where it is different" or that the change was not the type of change I thought would happen. I guess I'm more familiar with Voiceplay's style so even though I knew a change was happening, I was expecting a different change.
Thanks for watching!
This is so awesome, Home Free in my opinion. They are extremely talented. Please keep checking out Home Free. A little less commentary would be nice. Ben E King would be so very proud. Love your reaction.
I will almost certainly react to them in the future again. 🙂
Sometimes I comment more, sometimes less, it really depends on what I notice. Also, more commentary makes it easier to argue that these are fair use for analysis and review purposes in a copyright case of some sort. Not that I have had to deal with that yet. But your preferences are noted.
Thanks for watching! I'm glad you enjoyed
Thanks for your reaction. In my opinion, Home Free covers more genres successfully, has the tightest harmonies, relates best to their fan base, excels in beatboxing; guess, I should save more for later. Would enjoy learning more about your musical background and your experience listening to the five indivdual members of Home Free.
Thanks for watching! Home Free is definitely good and all the main a cappella groups excel in such different areas, it's hard for me to say who is "the best" at anything. And even that is so subjective, I don't even mind if someone has a different opinion than I do. 😄
I haven't really listened to much solo work from anyone in Home Free but I do know that Tim and Austin do a lot of it.
I probably could/should do a video at some point about my musical experience, but a quick run down: my parent put me in church choirs as soon as I could talk, I was in the local Bach Festival Children's Choir during elementary school, did school band all through middle and high school, sang in the youth choir at my church in that same time, went to FSU where I was in the Marching Chiefs and got a degree in Sacred Music (basically church music), was the band and choir director at high school in south Florida for a few years, got a Masters degree from UCF focusing on conducting and music education, and then when the pandemic destroyed public performances I started this UA-cam channel. The earlier videos on this channel are arrangements I have done for various ensembles but more recently I've been doing mainly reactions. I have also been in the regular choir and bell choir at my church for the last 8 or so years.
Good analysis. I like reactors who break down a video into its components.
I do think that it is important in a reaction and analysis video! Also, it helps with defending in a fair use copyright case, not that I've ever had to do that. 😄 Thanks for watching!
Tim has a 5 plus octave range!

All of them are great! Thanks for watching!
Home Free rules the a capella genre.
They are certainly quite good. Thank you for watching!
They do use a looper in concert
That would make multitracking easier 😂
Thanks for watching!
If you think Tim has two and a half octave range you need to listen to him do “ will you still love me tomorrow/stay. Just Tim. About a dozen tracks. You can retract that statement next reaction
I know that Tim's range is massive (5 octaves but I didn't remember that at the time). The 2 1/2 octaves (high baritone to bass) range that I mentioned is specifically the opening lick. I realize that my wording was unclear. Thanks for watching!
To me you sound like you expected them to sing the song like it was 60 ears ago. Just what Acapella groups do you like better. I'd like to give them listen though I'm a total Home Fry. They can move you to tears and they can make you laugh till you cry. They are known as a country Acapella group but they can sing all kinds of music. Their How great thou art is total voice no beatboxing and Adam Rupp actually sings a short solo. you need to check that one out. The video was filmed in the Austrian Alps right before their over seas tour was cut short because of the covid lockdown.
I don't expect covers to be the same as originals. What I was more doing was saying "this is where is it different" or that the change they did was not one that I was expecting. I watch enough groups that I can often predict when there will be a change and can usually predict what that change will be and Home Free went with a change that I wasn't expecting.
Someone else mentioned their "How Great Thou Art" video, which I probably will react to at some point.
I listen to basically everything that Voice Play puts out and then most of what Pentatonix or Voctave releases. That is also probably the order of "I listen most" to "I listen least."
Thanks for watching!
Um thanks for the reaction. I uh always appreciated others’ impressions.
I do say "um" and "uh" a lot and I should try to say them less. But if you notice in the beginning and end of the video I don't. That is because I am reading a script (one or two might slip in when my eyes move faster than my brain). Cataloging my thoughts/emotions and translating them to coherent sentences takes a few seconds sometimes and the other sounds come out while I'm thinking. Like the little spinny icon that you see while something is loading on a computer 😄
Thanks for watching! I do appreciate the feedback
Just flashed back to my undergraduate speech class in Tennessee. Fay Julian was the head of the department and that was in her first lecture. Funny the things you learn that bounce back at odd times. As you know, Home Free has a large supportive fan bass. I really appreciate how you manage to voice your observations while not comparing them to the other top tier a cappella groups. They're all quite impressive and have found their niche. Curious if you'll ever explore "Voctave". Like some other groups they're based in Orlando. Most have all performed at some of the prestigious Disney ensembles. With eleven members, the ladies are stunning performers. @@musicalmark
@@georgemegaw9019 I mean, this is by far, my most viewed reaction to date. So I definitely noticed the fan base. 🤣
I am familiar with Voctave and in fact my family will be seeing them in concert in two weeks. They are very good. I definitely will react to them at some point, but I don't have a set schedule for what videos I'll be reacting to when. Thanks again!
The focus should have been on the tenors in this song, not the bass and they let the tenors shine as it should be. Their harmonies are amazing and if you noticed, the beatboxer harmonizes with them in parts when not beatboxing. Austin is the high tenor and Rob is the lower tenor in the group, Chance can sing bass, and Tim can sing in a tenor range without struggle, so this group is extremely versatile and very talented in my opinion.
It is a very good arrangement and the tenors did definitely shine. 🙂 And yeah, they are all very versatile. Thanks for watching!
I’m sorry, but I don’t understand why you would start a reaction video by saying “ not what I expected” or “not like the original”. When I listen to a cover I don’t “expect” it to be nor do I want it to be “exactly” like the original…….
I don't expect covers to be like the original. It was more I was pointing out "this is where it is different" or the change was not a change that I expected. I watch enough other groups (especially Voiceplay) to know when a change is going to happen and to have type of change that I expect and Home Free went with a different change than I expected to happen.
Thanks for watching!
They aren't trying to do the original, they are doing their version. No , Austin is 1st tenor, not Rob.if u don't listen to HF much, then u don't get my subscription 😒
Same!

@@itzel1735 Agree. We all (including me) really need to act kind. He seems to be new to reacting, so we should cut him some slack. And everyone has their own tastes in music. HF just happens to fit my taste.
I don't expect a cover to be like the original. I was more pointing out "this is where it is different" or was expecting a different change to happen. I've watched enough other groups (especially Voiceplay) to the point where I know a change is about to happen and am expecting a certain type of change but Home Free did a different change.
Not every reactor's reactions appeal to every viewer, and that is fine. I would appreciate the subscription, but if I'm not your cup of tea, that is perfectly fine.
Thanks for watching, though!
Not trying to say one group is better than others but clearly you do not give Home Free the respect they deserve just be less dismissive when you encounter unexpected arrangements and such.
I wasn't trying to be dismissive, sorry if I came off that way. Thanks for watching!
I was not meaning to insult you in any way so sorry as well.

I'll look into them. Thanks for watching!
Sorry Rob has a beautiful voice but can’t sing as high as Austin you need to listen to some of their song before you say to much . Tim has a 5 octave range .
I know that Time has a 5 octave range even if I didn't remember the exact range in the moment. But I was actually referring to the specific musical line when I said it was 2 1/2 octaves.
And I was mistaken about Rob and Austin. Rob's voice does sound higher though, which happens sometimes. For example, C3 sounds like it is a middle of the range note when I sing it, but when a true tenor sings it, it sounds like the lowest note in the world. Because of the exact mechanics of individual voices, the true pitch and the apparent pitch are quite different.
Thanks for watching!
Too much commentary! Let the song play, please.
If you want to watch the original, the link is in the description. This is a reaction and analysis video, which I say in the opening script. That means I will be stopping and analyzing what I see.
Also, the longer you let the video play without stopping, the more likely UA-cam is to give you a copyright strike, since at that point the reaction is not a reaction, it is simply stealing someone else's work.
Thank for watching, though!
why don't you let the song play ? They are very good if you are looking for something you are not fun to lissen to
