  • RNP-Z approach to runway 26 at Innsbruck, Austria. Innsbruck is a challenging airport located at the heart of the Alps. Especially the engine-out procedures are very important here, but also the normal approaches require much more considerations than approaches at other airfields. Terrain (mountains) is off course a constant factor, but also the weather (snow, icing), cold temperatures (requires altitude corrections), climb performance and the short runway (1940 meters) are factors that need to be considered.
    This was our second flight of the day. In the morning the weather was marginal, on this flight it was better.
    It's a privilege to fly to Innsbruck. You need all the knowledge and skills you've got, but that makes it so much more rewarding. And the views! Just spectacular.
    The video does not show the complete approach, some 'boring' parts where nothing happened have been cut out.

    Got another question Captain,
    Lets say DEP RWY 26 you loose an Engine (V1 Cut) you head for the Valley WILDERMIEMING.
    Is the MAX turn 152kts? I can’t see the speed for the turn? Lets say it is 152kts and V2 is 144 so to respect the bank angle 25/30* you’ll be below V2 + 15 white bug and your limited to 30 AOB 15 bank and 15 overshoot to stick shaker? So bank angle 15 what will you do

    • @Ray737Pilot
      @Ray737Pilot  4 роки тому +3

      Our engine out procedure for runway 26 gives a maximum speed of 165 knots for the turn with 25 degrees angle of bank (that's a minimum bank angle). The max V2 we could accept here is 150 knots (in that case V2+15 is 165 knots). With a TOW of about 68 tons V2 is 150. We rarely reach that weight for a flight of INN to the Netherlands. If V2 would be higher than 150 we could try to make a calculation for a higher flap setting (10, 15 or 25). A thrust reduction might also help, with the assumed temperature method that we use V2 decreases with increasing assumed temperature. But a high assumed temp is not likely with a heavy airplane....

    • @Driver170
      @Driver170 4 роки тому +1

      Raymond Esveldt Been reading this airfield brief for runway 26 balked landing. It says at 4100ft select lvl chg and adjust speed to 165kts. Its goes on to say - both engines operating: this will be a deceleration. One engine inop: this will be an acceleration. Can you explain this please

  • @Driver170
    @Driver170 4 роки тому

    On the RTT 2Q dep it says MAX 180. Have you flown this SID if so do you always respect the MAX 180 because you’ll have flaps 5 out while above FL100 if respecting this speed which will be very draggy and fuel consumption will be high

    • @Ray737Pilot
      @Ray737Pilot  4 роки тому

      We mostly depart from runway 26, flying the Mogti1x departure. For runway 08 the RTT2Q is the most logical departure. I think I would just ask ATC if we could speed up. There is no need to stay below 180 kts for turn radius reasons, so I would be happy to speed up. ATC at INN is very relaxed, if there are no objections with for example other traffic I suspect that we could increase speed to more than 180 kts.

    • @Driver170
      @Driver170 4 роки тому

      Raymond Esveldt Hi, thats great thanks. So why do you guys use 26 mostly for dep as that has a more complicated Engine failure procedure and restrictions? Also are you able to report back with Vspeed for both runways with a TOW of 65t please?

    • @Ray737Pilot
      @Ray737Pilot  4 роки тому +1

      The wind is mostly westerly, so landing and takeoff from runway 26. If the wind is calm then landing 08 and takeoff runway 26 is best because that gives the shortest distance and flight time.
      V speeds are dependent on many factors (wind, temperature, QNH, runway braking action, VMC or IMC conditions). An example calculation for 65T, wind calm, 10 degrees, QNH 1013, dry runway, VMC gives the following numbers:
      Runway 26: flaps 25, assumed temperature 34 degrees, V1 128-130 (any speed in this range is good), VR 131, V2 140, EO acceleration height '3000'.
      Runway 08: flaps 5, assumed temperature 27 degrees, V1 137-138, VR 138, V2 147, acceleration height 4800'.

    • @Ray737Pilot
      @Ray737Pilot  4 роки тому +1

      More factors influencing the calculation: Engine rating (27K / 26K / 24K, we don't use the 24K on our -800's), winglets, SFP (Short Field Package, option from Boeing on some of our planes), broken equipment (some failures give performance penalties, for example due to extra drag or less braking performance). The calculation is done for every takeoff for the specific conditions at that moment for that specific aircraft.

    • @Driver170
      @Driver170 4 роки тому

      Raymond Esveldt Flaps 25 for runway 26. I guess this is for the turn in the valley - 165kts? Flaps 5 or 15 manoeuvre speed must be higher than 165kts?
      Also 3000ft AAL EO acc height is low? I have Jet2 brief and they use 7000ft depending on conditions.

      Sure, go ahead.

    • @Driver170
      @Driver170 5 років тому +1

      Fantastic. I’m very interested to know what altitudes AAL you use for departure ie NADP1 or 2 for runway 26/08
      Also for the engine out acceleration altitude would this be as high as 10000ft AAL

    • @Ray737Pilot
      @Ray737Pilot  5 років тому +3

      For runway 08 it's a normal NADP2. For 26 it's more complicated. I think NADP2 is published, but our engine-out acceleration height is above 1500ftAGL (around 2400ft AAL), so then we use that higher height. Complicating factor: if you get an engine failure after acceleration we have to decelerate back to max 165 knots (so flaps 5 or if heavy even flaps 15) for a tight turn in the west valley.
      For runway 26 we have a company-specific engine-out departure which allows us to accelerate to 165 knots (and get rid of flaps 25 or 15 if needed). Further acceleration takes place after the tight turn in the west valley. For runway 08 there is no special engine-out procedure.

    • @Driver170
      @Driver170 5 років тому

      Raymond Esveldt Very interesting! I flew with easyjet last week. Seemed they climbed out with V2+15 or whatever it is for airbus then bugged up. You ok to check the heights for the 738 out of runway 26? But would be interested to know the CLB thrust height and acceleration.

    • @Ray737Pilot
      @Ray737Pilot  5 років тому +2

      Engine-out acceleration altitude for runway 26 normally is around 4300/4400ft MSL (depending on temperature), but if really single engine we have to stay below 165 knots to make the tight turn, so we cannot completely clean up. With no engine failure we can choose to clean up at 4400ft, but we can also keep flaps until passing the SID deviation point (where the engine out SID starts to deviate from the normal SID). We can make choices as a crew, as long as we discuss the pros and cons of the procedure we follow.
