Stepper motors like to move. When they hold they will get hot. I've added heat sinks to small ones, but I don't think you can do much more than your fan idea for larger ones.
Curious how you powered your machine, I just bought one and the plug is a chinese 16a 220v. Did you make an adapter and make a dedicated breaker? I want to run mine off of my generator and I'm not sure how to go about it. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

have you tryed cutting oil
Yes, I was using a water-based lubricant
