I've done it wrong for 45 years: always kept morse tapers meticulously clean. In this video, I learned the morse tapers to coarse tapers conversion method which was never taught in school.
He does understand precision and concentricity by not unchucking the part and turning it all in one setup it will be perfectly round. So many of these utube machinists don't understand that you can't just put something in a three jaw chuck on a lathe and expect it to come out right.
don't let the internet jerks grind you down or talk bad about you......your videos are informative, and helpful.....I wish I could send you more , I hope this may help...Paul in Florida, USA
I’d use my Jones & Shipman cylindrical grinder on the taper and my vertical mill for the flats. Most of all, I’d use the FOUR JAW CHUCK instead of the.bloody three jaw!
I knew this was a "dumb-ass" technique when I saw the phrase, "not taught in school". He puts his tools on the concrete floor and performs dangerous proceedures with his lathe.
So much has been said about the butchery, but did anyone else notice that he put cardboard to protect the ways when he was going to grind the part? 😂😂😂😂
That pic is priceless, made me walk around all day with a shit eating grin. Just when you thought you've seen it all, then you get another peek. It wasn't always I had just what I needed to get the job done, I didn't, I grabbed the closest something and turned it into just the right tool for me. Today I look back at some of those precision works of art laying around and wonder wtf is that for.Who in the hell made that? Why I'm gonna load up the truck with all those metal thingamajigs and drop it off at the Smithsonian. Keep on making chips btother, my hat's off to you
There is a fair bit of hatred towards the butchery on display but looking at the background this guy does not have the air conditioned level workshop floor and all the accompanying western goodness that I personally have with all my lathes ,mills grinders tooling etc. I suspect he would be more likely to drive out of the desert after a breakdown than many of his detractors? My favourite old English saying is an engineer is someone who can fix something for 2 shillings that any fool can fix for a pound.
My views exactly , these guys are working with basic equipment and achieving pretty good results considering .Some of the comment's on here make me laugh. In the west we don't have to improvise like these guys have to.
That thumbnail photo was uncalled for- not representative of the content. OTOH I love the cleverness. I watch these videos just to see what you can get away with- both in terms of what you can make or do that works at least somewhat, and the level of safety that is seen as acceptable in other cultures. If I were making fundamental parts like Morse Tapers, I would want to make them with less worn equipment with a better surface finish, to ensure that their product was good enough for me to count on. Dude's making pretty rough stuff. But he uses it successfully all day to fix whatever people bring in, so it's good enough for him.
How is it that I see these massive multi thousand pound lathes in the most primitive of places? These things cost tens of thousands. Yet they are set up in literal shacks I don't understand it.
This, and other videos from this creator, are demonstrations that it pays not to be prissy, insisting that everything be just so before attempting something. With manual machinery, we are frequently faced with the need for fixturing and toolholding we don't have a ready answer for. The naysayers here are very likely to have to buy lots of extra stuff for weird jobs, or refuse them. This guy will cut and pound a concise solution that will get the job done while the rest of y'all are stuck in negativity.

Zum Glück wird so etwas nicht beigebracht. Alleine schon die Funken wo gegen die Pappe prasseln. Kein Wunder steht die Maschine draußen...da brennt sonst die Bude ab. Nene, besser nicht nachmachen.😆

Based upon the intro I thought this was a video about precision grinding your morse tapers in a concrete mixer with a dozen standard boulders.⚙
it was !
I'm not sure why you would think that. The boulders are CLEARLY metric. 🙄
might seem a little neolithic but inspiration out of desperation can give some truly remarkable results, improvise ,adapt, and overcome
Usinagem é sempre um trabalho fantástico 👏👏
Obrigado
You know it's going to be good as soon you hear chickens clucking in the background! 🐔🐔
🙏👍👍
Just because you can it does'nt mean you should...
Click bait, the grinder has nothing to do with this video
+rep
Thanks. You saved me time
Thanks for the tip off. Moving on and saving time.
The worst part is the video wasn't that bad, it didn't need the click bait bs anyway. That just pisses people off.
Thanks as others have said don’t need to waste my time 👍
Nice tooling, very smart machinist.
I’d use my Jones & Shipman cylindrical grinder on the taper and my vertical mill for the flats. Most of all, I’d use the FOUR JAW CHUCK instead of the.bloody three jaw!
Mantap pak siap selalu menyimak..
Terimakasih 🙏👍👍
I knew this was a "dumb-ass" technique when I saw the phrase, "not taught in school". He puts his tools on the concrete floor and performs dangerous proceedures with his lathe.
Wonder if needing to make new tools is related to the accidentally cutting the Jacob’s chuck with that fly cutter…..
So much has been said about the butchery, but did anyone else notice that he put cardboard to protect the ways when he was going to grind the part? 😂😂😂😂
Danke... 😢

It’s not a bad idea to cover the ways with damp rags or- when grinding on lathe
🙏👍👍

Wouldn't this put abrasive dust on the ways that would get gummed up with the oil?
I have learned new ideas thanks very much
Brilliant ideas! Welcome👍👍👍
wearing flip flops while in a machine shop. LOL!
Minute 0:09 I wonder how many times you repeated that shot until it was right? For me, those types of shots take hours.

Wow that's some seriously beat up equipment. And yes, sometimes there's a reason something is not taught in school.

Click Bait??? So, why was your entire grinder station being held between centers?

Yes you are right my friend trying to get more likes to get more money from UA-cam:-(((
He got me thats the whole reason I watched lol
And here I am complaining about pioneer stuff lol Man my boss would love you
CLICK BAIT
what does this have to do with the bench grinder between centers in the beginning of the clip?
Creative video, thanks :)
And that is exactly why the parts never fit other machines. LOL!

1:11 The center drill just went to hell.
Nice trick
It makes me grateful for Amazon to be honest. One click, $20 USD, and 3 days later…only technique needed is package opening.

Poor lathe is all I can say, great ideas but accuracy must be miles off.
Those poor tools are so abused 😢.

Shocking.
Diameter max, .937, Diameter minutos, .780, sistem usa, is better to put a carbride in the end, migh hardener before to grinder
Oke thank you
Yeah i thought that he might have broke his centre drill. Kurtis from CEE did a much better job m/c the taper!

Good to see that he covered the ways on that clapped out old piece of crap lathe.
