You definitely sound like you really care about people and their pain and symptoms. I love how you explain everything! I just had a Microdiskectomy last week.. because of severe stenosis. It was giving me excruciating sciatic pain and physical therapy was making it worse bc they never gave me a mri before they sent me there. I was in the ER 4 days in a row and finally a Dr. Ordered me an mri and my L5 area yes there it was a severe herniated disc.. he said I had no fluid left. And it was basically emergency surgery. It was scary and I had no choice bc of the pain.. I'm in the healing process now. My nerve is still somewhat worked up and I've had some pains here and there but when I woke up I felt imidiate relief from that nerve pain. They say it will take a while for it to calm down. Never in my life have I been in that much pain and I pray to God he would just take it away from anyone who has to feel that. Nerve pain is no joke. And I thought I had a high pain tolerance.. my problem is now I have 2 other bulging disc higher up, and even tho they aren't causing the nerve pain at the moment. What can I do to make those disc go back in and not become so bad like the other one? I don't want to ever feel that pain again and I don't want to hurt the disc that just had surgery. I know I have to heal first. But what sort of things can I do to help myself? He said I have spinal stenosis.. I'm 29. And my father and his brother have it also. Dr. says its a birth defect. I didn't know there was more than one spinal stenosis..

A few basic things is do not sit more than 20 minutes at a time or less if it gives you symptoms. Try and maintain your mobility and start a gentle walking program even if it’s 3 to 5 minutes as long as it’s tolerated and okayed by your surgeon.

But monthly and yearly I have some flare ups some worse than others. I take it day by day. I don't do any physical therapy bc it makes it worse I just walk. I'm still scared for my other disc problems. I hate taking pain medications so I don't take anything unless I have to. Thank God it gets worked up but hasn't reached the point it was before surgery. I'm looking into other forms of pain relief just incase i go down that road ever again with how bad it was. This week I Over did myself outside and im paying for it.

Thank you. Most rational explanation.I waited six weeks for an appointment with a chiropractor who had an excellent reputation ….. “He’s good,” even doctors said. He studied my MRI and said “I can’t help you. You have too many issues. But I plead with you, do not have surgery.”I am 87, I might add, and was otherwise in good shape. I was so depressed. I had looked forward to that appointment for six weeks! My worst problem is spasms. They are driving me crazy. Yes, pain in front thighs, but I could adjust to that if the spasms would ease up. They even keep me from sleeping.

I have had a bilateral laminectomy at which time was told I have an abnormally small spinal canal. Been told I have disc degeneration and spinal stenosis in most of my spine. Years of hard work and play. Was good for 22 years after surgery. Now have a herniated disc at that L4 L5 level. Like you said instant relief when sitting and hard time standing or walking. Something happened walking is not as painful, something changed. Lifting anything is the trigger now. Was considering artificial disc replacement. I would welcome a comment. Great video.

@@apexmovebetter I am a plumber so crouched over much of the time. Lifting anything causes numbness and weakness in my legs now as does walking too much. I was retired and went back to work for the summer in a supervisory position but a month in and I was working pipe wrenches and crouching. I felt it in my whole spine on pipe wrenches. I was thinking when those back muscles pump up it exasperates the stenosis. The changes that resently happened is no hip pain from walking or standing.

Moderate bilateral L4-L5, moderate bilateral L3-L4 foraminal stenosis. I have severe pain from the left back Wraping around to the left hip across the thigh and down to the foot. I have heard of a procedure called Veriflex that inserts a spacer between the vertebrae to open the space where the nerve exits. Do you know anything about this procedure. In my case, sitting does help the pain (opening up the vertebrae), but when I sit on this, my default is to be constantly gently moving to flex the spine as I'm sitting. Surgeon suggests complete lumbar laminectomy with fusion (possibly anterior and posterior incisions). I am terrified of the surgery and the risk of dementia due to long time under anesthesia. I am in terrible pain all the time. I am on pain medication to be able to function. The surgery risks frighten me as well as the risks of not having it. I am afraid I will become paralyzed if I do nothing. Will you please share your thoughts and give any advice you can give. I will be so very grateful!!

Is arthritis linked to spinal stenosis? I have facet joint arthritis and SS l4/l5. Currently really worried, my symptoms are moderate, I’m still active but have to sit down to alleviate the pain. Should I be worried that this will continue to worsen, how fast is the progression, does it take decades?

I know this post was about a year ago so I don’t know if I will get feedback at this time. I have transforminal stenosis in L4-L5. It has been going on for almost 4 months. I have had a small amount of relief from medications like meloxicam, gabapentin, and tramadol
I had an epidural shot 2.5 weeks ago but that didn’t help much either. The pain clinic wants me to go to physical therapy which I will be starting soon.
The question I have is if the nerve is trapped how can any of these things help heal if the nerve is physically pinched. Even exercise can help stretch the area of narrowing while you are doing but it it is not going to stay that way. Is the nerve swollen and may be calmed down with meds, injections’ and PT
Or is surgery the only way to open up the spine permanently?
It seems like nerve damage would occur if it stays pinched

That can happen. Sometimes the MRI is misleading on what exercise will help you. It doesn’t mean you don’t have stenosis but that may not be the pain generator. Gentle hyperextension "opened up" my lumbar spine. I went to the gym, jogged, and walked a mile without significant pain. So the pain is likely from bilateral facet arthrosis, DDD, mild scoliosis, and reverse spondylolisthesis (take you pick) but not the stenosis.
I have seen (as a personal injury lawyer) cervical hyperextension actually damage the spinal cord in advanced cases of cervical spondylosis in elderly women because that maneuver can decrease the room in the spinal canal for the spinal cord.
I've seen a spinal surgeon and a doctor of physical medicine. The doctor of physical medicine wanted me to do a radioabation of the spinal accessory nerves. The spinal surgeon said not to get all excited. The MRI was not that bad. He'd seen worse. That was four years ago.
I am getting physical therapy right now. But they focused on flexion. I kind of remember the idea of flexion to "suck" the disc back in for lumbar disc herniation. That's probably not an accurate understanding of McKenzie Method in regard to lumbar stenosis.
I wonder if the spondylolidthesis was "adjusted" like a chiropractic adjustment.
I understand not to attempt this at home. Hold my beer! Thanks.

Most often unless you have a unique situation 2-3 days is the maximum you want to do. Get another opinion you can really deconditioned in those tremendous amount of strength during that period. That being said I don’t know your full medical history and you should get another opinion from a physician

I have had 3 MRI's. All three were basically the same. Severe herniated L4/L5 and mildly herniated L5/S1 with annular tear. And severe spinal stenosis in L4/L5 and mild stenosis in L5/S1. Degenerative/Deterioration of the spine. My MAIN issue is actually in my hips. I cant stand or walk for long periods of time. I have got to sit down or i feel like im going to collapse. I have had 7 steriod shots over a 6 year period. They have helped alot. But i still have the hip pain and still have to sit down for awhile to get relief. I have had both hips x- rayed and they say both hips look normal. Back doctor says the hip pain is coming from the spinal stenosis. Is this correct?. What can i do to get more hip relief and make them stronger so i can walk and stand longer. I already do back exercises every morning for about 15 minutes. Also i pull my lower back muscles alot. I can pull my back muscles just by bending over and brushing my teeth sometimes. Is this also caused by spinal stenosis? Its getting to the point where i may just bite the bullet and have surgery.

Oh I can understand that completely. my Left hip is where most of my pain is except, mine goes to the front of my left thigh into the groin area. Its awful and feels like I rarely get relief. Im sorry youre going through the pain in the hips too. I wish you the best.

@Ricky Rush I think it is all because of stenosis. I have the same problems from 2012. too.

Piriformis syndrome is one of the conditions that could give you leg and buttock pain but is really not that common.
      I feel it’s over diagnosed

@@apexmovebetter Yeah, less info out there about that. I've seen a couple/few videos. All I know is I'm in constant pain. Worse with Any kind of real movement. Hurts like crazy to cough or sneeze. Agonizing rolling over in bed, etc. Surgery consult on June 7.
