Thanks. From Kentucky and love bourbon balls. Modifying the recipe to use blackberry liqueur. For the record, these were invented by Rebecca Ruth of Ruth’s Candies for a Kentucky Colonel who had said, “The two best things in life are Kentucky bourbon and Rebecca Ruth’s candies.” It is more traditional to soak the pecans overnight.
Love bourbon balls and make with melted chocolate as well as recipes that are just coated in sugar. Only thing I change is that I use coconut oil instead of gulf wax. Plus I toast and soak the pecans that are going on top in bourbon as well. (We did live in KY, got hooked on bourbon balls after touring distilleries and sampling, so maybe that's why the extra bourbon is so enticing.) Thanks for sharing. Am giving your version a go today!
I bet just a few drops on maple extract mixed with the bourbon/pecan mix would be HEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAVENLYYYYYYYYYYYY.....yum! I so got to try this recipe!
Thank you! You saved me like $70! I recently went to KY for the first time and bought some bourbon balls and ate them all ☺️. I was about to buy from more but now I know how to make them myself! 😍
Thank you both for this recipe! I have searched Pinterest the past few days for a bourbon ball recipe but couldn't decide which to choose. I will definitely be trying out this recipe today! And I assure you they'll be enjoyed 🙌
I’m from Texas and I moved to Kentucky 2 years ago and I’m falling in love with this place starting with the bourbon and I will definitely make this today ! I’m ok wilder ky . I was wondering what kinda store I can find that wax ??? I can’t find it in target .
I don't use wax and don't use butter either. Mine are still shiny and pretty, but theirs might be shinier if they were side-by-side. I microwave 6-8 oz of chocolate chips about 1-1/2 to 2 minutes. They still have their shape until you stir them for awhile. If they still have some small pieces visible after stirring very well, add another 10-20 sec at a time in the microwave, stirring until you have a very smooth dip. Once you've done this once or twice, you'll know exactly how long it takes for your particular microwave, since they all differ. This is really fast and easy - almost mindless - so you can make a small batch, use them before it gets too thick, and make a bit without taking more than a few minutes. I use this method for anything I want to dip in chocolate: the edge of a cookie, some candies, or to stir in nuts and crispy ingredients to drop and cool on wax paper for haystack-type candies. That said, I love this recipe in general for bourbon balls! I used the bourbon, pecan, and sugar instructions, which are much better than what I had done previously, but dipped them in only melted semi-sweet chocolate chips and topped with a pecan half.
Paraffin wax acts as a chemical preservative for food and helps foods look great and continue to stay fresh. Food-grade paraffin wax is edible and provides foods with both functional and appearance purposes. This type of wax can give chocolate a shiny coating. When chocolate is combined with paraffin wax, it will refrain from melting at room temperature or stay solid in someone’s hand.
WTH !? - you're eating the wax? No way. You need to explain what possible purpose the wax serves. I have seen numerous recipes on tube for bourbon balls, and this is the only channel that uses wax.
I'm making these for Christmas it was a family tradition and even found the ancient family card my gramma wrote. It mentioned the same type of wax. It gives it a smooth look, and sometimes a binding agent in her notes it said. Wax is in a lot of candies. :)
My mom said she also uses a little vegetable oil I’m making them now I don’t have wax at the house. She said she learned in candy molding class, she said you will have to add more as needed, like when you had to add more wax. Hope helps that don’t have wax at home like me
Using wax isndisgusting. Use coconut oil instead. As a retired EMT, I'd say consuming wax isn't very healthy. My mom used Gulf Wax in the 1970s for canning, not eating! Using pecans are more than decoration. They're full of flavor, & much better than walnuts.
Wax is used to coat produce and other foods to help them last longer. Wax is used instead of other techniques because it is edible and safe for human consumption, according to the U.S. Food and Drug regulations for food additives.
Exactly. You can eat honeycomb straight out of the hive. I mean, maybe you shouldn’t eat a ball of wax, but food grade wax or beeswax is perfectly safe.

I inherited my great aunt's Kentucky bourbon ball recipe. She was country! And her recipe had wax in the chocolate as well

It is at Walmart in the baking aisle. Here is a picture: www.walmart.com/ip/Gulf-Wax-Household-Paraffin-Wax-1-Pound-Bars-3-Packs/416836105
Nice tutorial . Simple and easy.
I. Can we make this without wax? I feel weird about eating wax.
Yes you can!

You can do without the wax, or you can use coconut oil instead.

That’s exactly right 😃
Hi Folks. These look and sound so delicious!!!!!!!!!!1 Tfs. Merry Christmas.
Merry Christmas!
I'm so going to make these.
These look great! Is there a way to cook out the alcohol to make it friendly for the kiddos?
You may want to try Buckeyes for the kids. They are peanut butter coated in chocolate.
Why do you need the wax? I’ve made it without. Looks like a great recipe!
It makes it shiny.
You can make it shiny by just adding a little more chocolate to the already melted still warm chocolate...when it melts it makes it shiny.
I heard the wax helps the buckeye not melt so easy .
Are you guys from Kentucky?? 💙💙
Yes :)
I’ve made these and never used the wax. I don’t think it’s actually needed.
It just makes them shinier.
I was wondering!
Are these intoxicating?
There’s not enough in them to cause any issues.
Oh definitely making these! ☢️
H abut add more bourbon to the chocolate mi also
Are these kid friendly ?
I ate them as a kid.
No they have too much sugar in them.

It makes the chocolate shiny. It won't hurt you at all.
It's not the only one that uses wax. It's a common practice

Wax is in a lot of candies. :)
Also you can find it in the baking isle. It's not harmful and can be eaten.
