    This scene is just...weird. The strange music, the enormous gas mask, Peter's 1000 mile stare, it's all just really...surreal. It's scenes like these and Krebs' negotiation with Chuikov that make me wonder what the original vision for this movie was

    I like all these deleted scenes, it showed a surreal picture in the last stretch of the war from the perspective of the next generation of Germany (children). This changes considerably the point of the movie, instead of showing the last days of Hitler's personal circle.
    Peter Kranz after all is a brainwashed Hitlerjugend
    He fought in real battles with bodies dismembered on the ground
    He witnessed how his 'invincible' country was in ruins
    He saw his friends and fellows commit suicide before the end
    He saw how his parents were hanged
    He maybe killed a soviet soldier (who didn't have the intention to shoot or fight back, so it must be worst)
    Man, this is too much for a kid.. At least in the end of the movie it's soothing to know that Peter takes off his uniform, decides to escape with Traudl and he even gets a bike, showing his intention to go ahead with his life

    • @derin111
      @derin111 2 роки тому +19

      Yes I agree. It gives a feeling of the surreal madness that must have been the ‘normal reality’ for kids at that time. My Mother was a 5 year old in a destroyed German city at the end of the war. That was her ‘reality’….the only World she knew.

    This may have been already posted, but it is actually a reenactment of period photograph titled "Woman with gas mask pushing baby carriage (Berlin Kurfürstendamm)" by Wolf Strache, Nazi photographer, in 1943. It depicts a civilian coping with the bombing raid of the city, not the Battle of Berlin that took place two years later. I have a suspicion that this scene was deleted because of copyright issue as Strache passed away in 2001, just several years before this movie was released.

    • @SantomPh
      @SantomPh 2 роки тому +8

      it cannot be copyright as it is not the same medium and the limitations on it must have lapsed years ago. The scene was cut more because this is just after the kid lost his sergeant (one of the more positive Germans in the movie) and fired his Panzershreck. This was literally too much for the viewer to stomach.

    • @kugellehr

      @@alexsandrkerensky7457 Indeed. The strange truth is that chemical weapons just aren't a particularly efficient way to kill people.
      The cost to manufacture and store them is quite high, you have to have the right weather conditions to use them and even then a change in windspeed or direction can easily blow them back on your own troops. Also even if you don't actually use them they can still be a huge environmental hazard with potential to pollute groundwater if not stored properly.
      Why go through all that trouble when you can just use regular guns and bombs? Dictators like Saddam and Assad mainly used because of the terror it struck into the hearts of their enemies, moreso than it's actual military effectiveness.

    I like this scene. The "woman" pushing the stroller is likely a deserter trying to escape the city. Peter, a young boy, is walking towards whatever the deserter, a grown man, is trying to escape. In this moment, Peter is more of a man and soldier than an actual grown man and soldier. It's a great juxtaposition for all sorts of themes.
    I can see why the scene was cut though. The German civilian gas masks look weird and not everyone might key into the person being a deserter, making for a confusing and pointless 30 second scene.

    Actually this scene was not deleted at least in the german version. And this movie was not accuate at all. It shows a quite wrong picture of history. I recommend the book of one of the last eyewitnesses Rochus Misch. He mentioned parts of this movie that do not show how it was back then. There is an english version available.

    I'm not an expert, but looks like it's VM-40 a.k.a "Die Deutsche Volksgasmaske", if you are wondering.

    I've seen one for sale in my country, the price was something between 150-160 euros. Truly rare piece of history.

      @@EvanFr29 Just checked Wehrmacht gas mask for sale (its more common in my country). 110-120 euros, scratched, with some dents and even worse. This one (from the movie I mean) really rare for my country, and I've seen it only 1 time, so that's why the price was so high, I guess. Like seller said: "Perfect condition. Not a replica. Bought it in Germany, from military collector". You damn lucky. 25-35 euros? Its original gas mask? Not a replica?
