A few years ago heard a few tips about closet cleaning and it worked for me…..Can’t decide on a yes or no for a few items….Hang it in the closet with the hanger facing ‘hook out’. If you wear it replace it normally. When you clean/ organize the next time, if the hanger has not changed, it becomes a NO. The other tip is when you buy something new, discard something old. This has worked for me.

I’m giving myself two extra years on the “not worn in one year rule”, which I usually follow, because I’ve only left the house a few times during the pandemic. I have many beautiful, current clothes that I wear more when out and about. I’m re-starting the clock this spring, assuming that this Omicron wave finishes the pandemic stage of COVID-19.
I looked back and found I only wore about 10% of the clothes I had in last two years and I realized that I really don't need so many. I have been eliminating the piles ever since and decided to continue doing it whenever possible.
First time I’m organizing my closet, at age 68, not only is my small closet cluttered but also I don’t have the basic essentials in my closet. I suddenly decided that it’s time to make changes in my closet and my clothing. Feeling overwhelmed, decided to search on UA-cam and I came across your channel!!! I think I’m off to a good start!

I’ve never seen so many white blouses except in a store and even there usually much less! I have one. You have a wonderful functional closet and many beautiful clothes. My rules vary though due to weight gain and loss so I have my fat clothes, mid weight and thin clothes. Also I keep clothes much much longer and find I will wear them maybe even several years later especially as styles and trends go in and out. I have two closets and one is like yours with just the clothes I will wear this season. Thank you for sharing.
Since I live in a tiny(450sqft) condo with a closet that is super small, I need to seasonally organize my closet. So now that it's winter, all of my spring/summer things are in storage bins on a very high top shelf including summer shoes! Since I am limited in space, every item needs to mix and match with at least 4 other items! And nearly everytime I purchase something I purge something! Plus I do the color coordinating thing too! This has been a learning curve as I lived in a 2300 sqft home until I downsized. I found out quickly that 3 or 4 pairs of jeans in my go to mid rise, straight leg style in black, dark rinse and light and 2 skinny leg in black and dark rinse are all I need! It can be done! Because of this, I've upgraded my style a bit as I don't have a lot of room for sweats and athleisure wear. I have to get as much bang for my buck as possible so I depend on multiple sweaters, blouses or T's and blazers to go with my basic jeans and pants. I'm a lot more dressed up than most of my community but that's their problem!
I can relate, (570 sq ft) and I’m slowly upgrading everything in my wardrobe when I get rid of something. The part that takes time is really deciding what I love the most and that is where my list started. Then as I wear the old item out, I will replace it with a higher quality version. It’s going to take time to also figure out brands but clearing out the closet is so helpful (oh and clearing our the drawers-lol). Thank you Beth 👗🧥🧣👡

I cleanse every season (However I have given myself a pandemic grace period). I'm one of those that turn my hangars backward in the beginning of each season so I can see just what I really wear!! I feel better when there are 'spaces' that I get to fill with new items! Thank you for the inspiration.

I love the pants hanger. I am using our tiny extra bedroom as my dressing closet. It has a very small closet that is deeper than it is wide. It is a challenge. The rolling rack may be the solution. Thank you for the inspiration.

I love to clean out closets! I do it seasonally, but my boot collection is a bit of a wild card! I need a better space for that. But that will come! I have even given away my treasures that no longer fit. I also shred papers that are no longer needed. Worn and damaged clothes go in the bin! My friends and former coworkers love it when I do a purge! Older luggage that I don’t use, purses…..I should hire out! Haha! Love your videos with the great tips and hints!
Great information! I live in Ohio, so I have a lot of winter coats and I need those wooden hangers. 👍 I hope you do a segment about costume jewelry. I have soooo many necklaces, earrings from my working days and I don’t really know how to store them. I hate to get rid of them bc I really like them and I spent a lot of money for some pieces. 😩
Great advice! You've given me that push to tackle one of my closets today on a wintery day. I have thrifted a large wardrobe, which has been great, but I can only wear so many clothes. It's painless to donate items back to the charity shops. And it feels so good to see a clean, organized closet!

Great ideas! I have done the decluttering. For a while, clothes were tight in my closet and I didn't like that. When I cut down to those things I loved, now there is room in between pieces. Also, I did this little trick where I put a hair band (they come by the dozens in packages) on each hanger and I took them off as I used the piece. I wanted to make sure I wore everything. Guess what--it got me to get rid of more. Now, I know for sure that all my closet is being used.

I just love your ideas, most of which seem to work for most women. I am an anomaly and change weight 10-12 pounds at a time, and my sizes literally range from 4-12. This adds another level to your flow chart there. I simply cannot throw away things bc they are 2 sizes too big bc I will likely be that size again in 5 years.

Please don't get rid simply based on not worn for a certain period of time. I have repeatedly brought items out of storage which have not been worn for years as fashion, circumstances and activities change. I still have wide leg trousers and jeans from before the skinny and straight phase which I'm wearing again. I have a dress for very formal occasions which I only attend every 5-10 years. I didn't need my snow gear for a few years, but recently have worn out again. It's more sustainable to keep an item and find a way to wear it than to get rid and find you need to buy again.
I have a similar experience, Lynn. There are items which seem just to have taken a break (slumbering in my closet) and then are used intensely again, which is fun, like spending time with an old acquaintance once more... .

I just have two methods when I clean out my closets.. Keep or Go ! Then when I get done , I get into the Go pile & see what I can throw away & the rest goes into storage for summer yard sales .. I have started in the kitchen with the cabinets, and have already a huge box that can be sold in my yard sale .. now I need more boxes ! Lol 😂 It’s feels so good when later , you go back & open the doors & it’s so clean & neat & I can see what I have , instead of digging for stuff . 😊

I literally just cleaned out my closet before watching your channel. I typically clean out ever season. I do keep items that are fancy vacation and/or weddings for more like 3 to 4 years. As stated above we have not a lot of travel since 2020. Love the felt hangers and wood for coats and jackets.

I do this at the beginning and end of each season and have done most of my adult life.. tastes change so if it's good I put in another room and reassess the clothes at the beginning of the appropriate season... some items just go but some I feel differently the next season if I dont it goes ... thankyou for your insightful video

I believe you have mentioned the “one toe in, one toe out” method for organizing shoes in a previous video. I do that and I really appreciate the extra space this creates. I’m now in the process of converting my items to velvet hangers and pants hangers. The plastic blouse hangers I use for workout jackets so I can tell exactly where those jackets are and my nice blazers begin…….and once you’re organized, it’s so easy to stay organized. These are great suggestions Beth! Perfect timing too! I turned all my hangers backwards on January 1st to see what I’m actually wearing. Then I tried on almost every top (next week I’ll try on pants) and am getting rid of about 30 items. Once I got past that I still liked an item, if it doesn’t look good on anymore, it’s just taking up space and needs to go. It messes with your head. After seeing your closet, I want to get it professionally designed!

LOL!! My closet is 1/4th yours and I am seeing a bit of green!!! I go through my things 2-3 times a year. Takes me maybe 30 minutes. And, all my clothes are there- no off season storage for me. Makes me really have to love those pieces I have.
I actually flip my hangers one way when I put them away. I turn the hanger once it's be worn. Then I know which pieces I wear. I am going to look for the pants hangers you use. Thank you for sharing the hanger types.

GM Beth, I have two questions, and I'm really looking for help. 1) I need a solution for boot storage. 👢 How do you store all your tall and short boots? 2)My life has changed so drastically due to covid, no trips(we would usually take 3 a year), very few social events, Do I really want to pitch everything I haven't worn in a year? Christmas has always meant 3 formals, those events have been canceled since 2020. Do I save the formals? Store them? What are your thoughts?
I just recently did this and was able to decluttered so much clothing it is unreal! I cut my fall/winter wardrobe by about 40% I’m going to go through all my spring/summer stuff and only put away what I love and wear making note of what I might need to purchase. But after all of that I’m not going to buy anything else unless it’s a true need.

This video is invaluable!!! A few years ago I had to transition my closet from a "working" closet to a "retired" woman's closet. That was a real job to accomplish but now I possess a much more casual wardrobe which suits my lifestyle to a T. Thanks for all you do!

Great system!!! I find I’m in a weird time period. Still working, but wow, have things gotten a lot more casual. I like dressing up a little bit more than a lot of my colleagues but I don’t want to separate myself or seem that I am either “out of touch” (I’m one of the oldest employees) or that I’m trying to somehow separate myself. I have set up my closet much like you have but I like the idea of completely emptying it and then reloading. I think my problem has come in trying to thin out instead of really editing.

I also color code my clothes. Casual wear on one side, work items on the other. My closet is not near as big as yours so one category for what to keep is determined by space. Once the space (the closet) is filled, items goes in the donation pile. I like the watch the Minimal Mom for organization tips. Her philosophy is that your stuff is inventory much like inventory at Dillards or Nordstrom’s and you have to manage it. You have to clean it, store it, move it etc. I don’t want to manage it so I keep my stuff pared down. Thank you for your videos - you always have good conte;t.

I read an article that said that the one-year rule was just a way to get people to buy the same clothes over and over again. I agree with that. I have classic clothes like shirts and sweaters that I bought 15 years ago. Sometimes I'll skip a year or two and then I'll wear them again; it just depends on what my color preferences are that year. I have knit tops that I bought in 2006 that I wore this year. They are classic v-neck tops that haven't changed in style forever and they still look good; why would I get rid of them?

Also, I did this little trick where I put a hair band (they come by the dozens in packages) on each hanger and I took them off as I used the piece. I wanted to make sure I wore everything. Guess what--it got me to get rid of more. Now, I know for sure that all my closet is being used.

I just love your ideas, most of which seem to work for most women. I am an anomaly and change weight 10-12 pounds at a time, and my sizes literally range from 4-12. This adds another level to your flow chart there. I simply cannot throw away things bc they are 2 sizes too big bc I will likely be that size again in 5 years.

Please don't get rid simply based on not worn for a certain period of time. I have repeatedly brought items out of storage which have not been worn for years as fashion, circumstances and activities change. I still have wide leg trousers and jeans from before the skinny and straight phase which I'm wearing again. I have a dress for very formal occasions which I only attend every 5-10 years. I didn't need my snow gear for a few years, but recently have worn out again. It's more sustainable to keep an item and find a way to wear it than to get rid and find you need to buy again.
Great comment - I have thrown things away which I now deeply regret.
I have a similar experience, Lynn. There are items which seem just to have taken a break (slumbering in my closet) and then are used intensely again, which is fun, like spending time with an old acquaintance once more... .

I just have two methods when I clean out my closets..
Keep or Go !
Then when I get done , I get into the Go pile & see what I can throw away & the rest goes into storage for summer yard sales .. I have started in the kitchen with the cabinets, and have already a huge box that can be sold in my yard sale .. now I need more boxes ! Lol 😂
It’s feels so good when later , you go back & open the doors & it’s so clean & neat & I can see what I have , instead of digging for stuff . 😊

I literally just cleaned out my closet before watching your channel. I typically clean out ever season. I do keep items that are fancy vacation and/or weddings for more like 3 to 4 years. As stated above we have not a lot of travel since 2020. Love the felt hangers and wood for coats and jackets.

I do this at the beginning and end of each season and have done most of my adult life.. tastes change so if it's good I put in another room and reassess the clothes at the beginning of the appropriate season... some items just go but some I feel differently the next season if I dont it goes ... thankyou for your insightful video

I believe you have mentioned the “one toe in, one toe out” method for organizing shoes in a previous video. I do that and I really appreciate the extra space this creates. I’m now in the process of converting my items to velvet hangers and pants hangers. The plastic blouse hangers I use for workout jackets so I can tell exactly where those jackets are and my nice blazers begin…….and once you’re organized, it’s so easy to stay organized. These are great suggestions Beth! Perfect timing too! I turned all my hangers backwards on January 1st to see what I’m actually wearing. Then I tried on almost every top (next week I’ll try on pants) and am getting rid of about 30 items. Once I got past that I still liked an item, if it doesn’t look good on anymore, it’s just taking up space and needs to go. It messes with your head. After seeing your closet, I want to get it professionally designed!
I can't recommend a professional closet designer enough. They will maximize every square inch of your space to make it functional yet beautiful.
If I got rid of 30 items half my closet would be gone.

LOL!! My closet is 1/4th yours and I am seeing a bit of green!!! I go through my things 2-3 times a year. Takes me maybe 30 minutes. And, all my clothes are there- no off season storage for me. Makes me really have to love those pieces I have.
I actually flip my hangers one way when I put them away. I turn the hanger once it's be worn. Then I know which pieces I wear. I am going to look for the pants hangers you use. Thank you for sharing the hanger types.

Christmas has always meant 3 formals, those events have been canceled since 2020. Do I save the formals? Store them? What are your thoughts?

I just recently did this and was able to decluttered so much clothing it is unreal! I cut my fall/winter wardrobe by about 40% I’m going to go through all my spring/summer stuff and only put away what I love and wear making note of what I might need to purchase. But after all of that I’m not going to buy anything else unless it’s a true need.

This video is invaluable!!! A few years ago I had to transition my closet from a "working" closet to a "retired" woman's closet. That was a real job to accomplish but now I possess a much more casual wardrobe which suits my lifestyle to a T. Thanks for all you do!

Great system!!! I find I’m in a weird time period. Still working, but wow, have things gotten a lot more casual. I like dressing up a little bit more than a lot of my colleagues but I don’t want to separate myself or seem that I am either “out of touch” (I’m one of the oldest employees) or that I’m trying to somehow separate myself. I have set up my closet much like you have but I like the idea of completely emptying it and then reloading. I think my problem has come in trying to thin out instead of really editing.

I also color code my clothes. Casual wear on one side, work items on the other. My closet is not near as big as yours so one category for what to keep is determined by space. Once the space (the closet) is filled, items goes in the donation pile. I like the watch the Minimal Mom for organization tips. Her philosophy is that your stuff is inventory much like inventory at Dillards or Nordstrom’s and you have to manage it. You have to clean it, store it, move it etc. I don’t want to manage it so I keep my stuff pared down. Thank you for your videos - you always have good conte;t.

I’m trying to follow these rules but how do I apply the one year rule when these have been two weird years?Not much going on to wear them.
I read an article that said that the one-year rule was just a way to get people to buy the same clothes over and over again. I agree with that. I have classic clothes like shirts and sweaters that I bought 15 years ago. Sometimes I'll skip a year or two and then I'll wear them again; it just depends on what my color preferences are that year. I have knit tops that I bought in 2006 that I wore this year. They are classic v-neck tops that haven't changed in style forever and they still look good; why would I get rid of them?
