As an actor you can't make every character sound the same. Each character you play has a different personality and you need to apply that personality to your singing. So if Sierra sounded exactly like Christine when playing Ariel, it would be a bad thing because Ariel and Christine aren't the same person so they shouldn't sound the same. I'm not saying bad things about Sierra though, because I love Sierra.

I KNOW RIGHT? But I feel like whatever happened in this era is over. This kind of quality and magic...is a beautiful thing of the past now. Disney keeps trying and trying to reproduce it but falls short. I mean, some recent efforts have been ok, my favorite being Enchanted, but it's just not the same thing. I think the key was Horward

A brilliant talent like Howard Ashman sadly comes only once in a lifetime. That's why I think it's unfair to compare songs from Tangled, Frozen, and Moana to the songs of Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin.
Well, this is the I Want song... so you should really compare it to The Wizard and I... and -- as much as a Wicked fan as I am after 9 shows -- I think it's a tie... as long as it includes the reprise.
As much as I love this song, once I realized the similarities to Somewhere that's Green, (Little Shop of Horrors) I can't unhear it. Lol...but I love both.
A like it... However, I do sort of wish it was in the same key as the film... Here, it feels a little too up, and less chillingly longing than the movie. Well done though, Sierra is always incredible.
I think part of it is an unfortunate consequence of being on Broadway, as the higher key is to project the voice to the rest of the audience. Obviously a recording for the animated film wouldn't need to achieve the same effect, and I think Ashman's demo and direction to Jodi was specifically to sing in a lower tone/key because the song was more for Ariel herself and didn't need to sound like it was going out to listeners, so to speak. Look up the Ashman's Demo recording of PoYW, you can hear that same effect in his own inflection for the recording.
