Just...just goosebumps and tears, everybody. From poor Ariel trying so hard to make Eric understand her, to Eric realizing he doesn't *want* to find "the voice" if it means he loses Ariel, to Sebastian's honest desire to make everything right for Ariel because he loves her, darn it, to that grief in Triton's voice when he's wondering where his daughter is, blended all together, with the beautiful melodies of If Only and Her Voice...aaaagh, this is so gorgeous it's hurting me!
I get goosebumps listening to this song. I love Sebastian’s lyric “if only it were up to me this all would turn out right” . Everything about this song is beautiful
Here is the lyrics Ariel: If only you could know The things I long to say If only I could tell you What I wish I could convey It's in my ev'ry glance My heart's an open book You'd see it all at once If only you would look If only you could glimpse The feeling that I feel If only you would notice What I'm dying to reveal The dreams I can't declare The needs I can't deny You'd understand them all If only you would try All my secrets, you would learn them All my longings, you'd return them Then the silence would be broken Not a word would need be spoken Prince Eric: What is it about her That's so wonderfully, impossibly familiar? Why do I feel dizzy In a way I've only felt but once before? How come when she looks at me It seems like time stops moving Almost like the way it did that day upon the shore? But that voice! Ariel: If only it were true If only for a while Eric: Ah, that voice! Ariel: If only you would notice How I ache beneath my smile Eric: Where's that voice? Ariel: I guess you never will I guess it doesn't show But if I never find a way to tell you so Oh, what I would give If only you could know Sebastian(Spoken): Bless ya, child. Tomorrow, the Prince will have his pick of any princess in the land! How can a little mermaid compete with that? Sung If only I knew how I'd make him see the light If only it were up to me This all would turn out right And if I only could I'll tell you what I'd do I'd simply wave my claw And make your dreams come true And wouldn't that surprise you If you only knew King Triton: How could she just suddenly Completely disappear into thin water? It's been two whole days And I don't know where she has gone! Eric: Ah, that voice! King Triton: If only you'd come home... Sebastian: If only I could help... Eric: Where's that voice? Ariel: If only there were time I know we'd kiss at last Eric: That voice! King Triton: If only you'd come back I'll change my ways! Sebastian: Just one more day for that kiss to come... Ariel: But time keeps racing forward And our moment's almost passed! King Triton: I'll try to understand... Ariel: It has to happen now... King Triton: I'll keep my temper low... Sebastian: I'd give my life up to make it happen... King Triton: I should have started listening to you all along... Eric: How I wish that girl could have been this one! Ariel: There's only one more day until I have to go! Eric: If only... Ariel, Sebastian & King Triton: Oh, what I would give if only you could know... Eric: And at the ball What will occur? Maybe I'll find that voice But I'll lose her... Ariel: If only... Sebastian: If only... King Triton: If only...
The harmony at 4:03 makes me almost cry every time, especially since my high school just finished our production of the Little Mermaid and that harmony, I am not exaggerating, sounded better than this and I’ll never hear it again.
I love how they made Sebastian more caring in the musical. In the movie he is timid and basically Ariel's babysitter, but here he is loving and wants more than anything for her to get Eric.
I agree. It’s really sweet to see Sebastian care about Ariel so much. I think Disney noticed this too, ‘cause in Ariel’s Beginning, Sebastian shows he really cares about Ariel and her sisters in general. Heck, when King Triton wrongfully imprisons him and his friends in the movie for playing music and he has the chance to escape, he initially refuses because he’s worried about how Ariel will fare without him.
The one thing I love about how Ariel’s part is written is that it almost sounds like she’s close to tears or in tears if it’s sung really well without the actress having to cry on cue. The cadence and the flow of the notes is just so emotional in itself.
There's just something about the line "How I wish that girl could have been this one" that just DRAGS me to tears I think it's because it shows that Eric fell in love with her without her needing to say (or sing) a word
I can't be the only one who wishes this song had have been in the original movie. I hope Disney will put it in the new live action version of The Little Mermaid coming out soon. 😍🙏
love how after Sebastian has the worst day of his life, he instantly forgives Ariel and gives her dating advice. He’s such a sweet character and is trying to make up for accidentally snitching on her. That’s a brave hero right there. One who may be neurotic, but helps you anyway because it’s the right thing to do ❤️.
We are so proud of Sebastian. He may not have approved of Ariel’s dreams, but he certainly wouldn’t have gone to the extent of Triton by destroying her grotto. I love when he tries to apologize to Ariel and he instantly regrets accidentally snitching on her. And he doesn’t want to tell on her after she gets her legs because he knows she’s been emotionally scarred. She’s technically not safe where she lives. Two wrongs don’t make a right. Sebastian takes full responsibility to make her happy and to make up for letting her down in the first place.
I’m playing Sebastian this year in my high school’s musical & I love this comment! I think it perfectly incapsulates what Sebastian is & does in the musical & it helped me understand him more! Thank you! ❤
3:17 alternate lyrics for Triton: How could I have pushed her to the point of having no one else to turn to? What if I have lost her and it's all my fault she's gone? If only you'd come home, if I could turn back times, I'll change my ways, I'll try to understand, I'll keep my temper low. I should have started listening to you long ago. Oh what I would give if only you could know. If only.
This song is so freaking underrated. Quartets are my favorite kinds of songs. And this one is just so freaking beautiful all of these singers are incredible this song deserves way more credit
My older brother is a Senior in high school and his school is doing The Little Mermaid for their musical and he is King Triton. I listen to this song every night and I cry because of the lyrics and what he has to sing. He will be leaving to college soon and I'm going to miss him a lot. His ex girlfriend is Ariel in the musical and about a month ago she broke up with him and broke his heart. This song is beautiful.
How are all of these people amazing singers? Sierra Boggess has a powerful and incredible voice and has incredible acting range, Sean Palmer sounds really nice, Titus Burgess, despite the accent he's doing, still imbues a ton of emotion into his performance, and Norm Lewis has a mighty voice that just makes him sound like a king. What a group.
One thing the musical does better than the movie- they show how Eric is falling in love with Ariel even though he thinks she's not the Voice, and he begins to doubt his plan of marrying whoever is attached to that voice: "How I wish that girl could have been this one" "and at the ball what will occur maybe I'll find that voice but I'll lose her"
Question to the musical nerds: When my high school did this Triton’s first line was “How could I have pushed her to the point of having no one else to turn to? What if I have lost her and it’s all my fault she’s gone?” Where did that change come from? Goodness. I love this musical.
I don't know for sure, but I know the version that they use now is a little different from this version. For example, instead of I Want the Good Times Back, Ursula sings Daddy's Little Angel
The music they sell too high schools is often slightly different then the Broadway versions. Sometimes singers get messed up because the songs are in different keys compared to the Broadway key. Sometimes they even cut songs as well.
I can’t explain it but this song gives me every emotion you can think of in every way. Happiness sadness anger confusion and it is by far one of the most incredible songs I’ve ever heard it makes me cry every time I listen to it I really don’t know why but I feel like I’m in a different world when I’m singing this song or even just listening to it
Why aren't more people talking about this? It makes it a sort of amazing secret that only those who know can enjoy. I just learned about it from some friends and I can't stop listening to it. I wish I'd known about this song earlier but I probably wouldn't have appreciated it as much as I do currently. I looovvvee this song
I was a seagull in this production just this past week! Unfortunately, we did not have all the songs (unfortunately including this one 😭) so this one in particular does not send to make me nostalgic, although many others do. Yes, Ariel and Sebastian killed it in mine too 😜
We just did this musical at school at it was so cute because the guy who played triton is one of my best friends and he has an absolutely incredible voice (no bias! i have proof) and another one of my friends played Windward. whenever Triton came out onto stage to sing his part of this song, windward would run ti side stage and just stand there watching him. It was so adorable because i could have sworn that for that song, he was completely in love. I love this song so so much
You know, one thing I never understood is why Ariel didn't just write everything down on paper and just give it to him? Would've been so much quicker and easier for her.
Yeah, there was a debate on whether or not she should be blonde but the directors decided against it since Splash came out a few years before TLM did and Madison the mermaid was blonde in that movie ._.
We aren't talking enough about how utterly heartbreaking Triton's lines are. He realized how badly he messed up and is willing to do *anything* to get his daughter back. Can you imagine how terrified he must be? His little girl has just vanished, and he has no idea where she is or in what condition she is.
Just got drafted as Triton for this since I'm the only guy in my school who can sing AND play Triton's character. I'm a baritone, so I should be fine, but Triton has a couple high notes that I'm kinda worried about XD
I auditioned 2 days ago and have been called back for both Triton and Sebastian. If I am fortunate to get either (the competition of talent is unreal!) I would not mind in the least which one it is as I truly love both this roles. My voice is deeper and richer as a baritone for Triton but I'm also very comfortable with all of Sebastians range. Just crossing my fingers and hoping for the best.
Harrison Shoaf dont worry my dude, im 16, just played Eric this fall, and im a low bass (Bass2) and had to hit thst higher note lol, and with time you can get there, just dont be afraid to belt it out for that note, youll get it.
In my schools production(before corona cancelled it) we changed sebastians part slightly and then made it a duet with grimsby. I think we also added in another harmony for grimsby but I can’t quite remember
I understudied Prince Eric in this show (they gave the chance for understudies to perform some shows) and, at our theatre awards at the end of the year, the overstudies and understudies for these characters came together to perform this song one last time together.
Listens to TLM broadway song A: This is my favorite! Listens to song B: OMG! Probably my favorite song!! Listens to this: OKAY. THIS IS FINAL. IF ONLY IS MY FAVORITE SONG FROM THE MUSICAL. :D
14yellowCupcakes There was a speaker in the dressing room, but it's not as good. It's the same way with I Want the Good Times Back. Thank god there was a DVD.
Don't mind me, I'm just an adult at work weeping over Triton's "If only you'd come back, I'd change my ways" and Sebastian's "I'd give my life up to make it happen".
I Listen To This Song Every Single Day And Night Nonstop And I Was Ariel In My High School Production And I Was So Sad When I Hear This Now Cause My Play Is Over Now And I Am In Grade 9 And I Bet a grade 12th
I'm trying to imagine a world where I don't listen to this every day and it's a sad world indeed.
Paint EXACTYLY!!! IKR!! BTW, YOU'RE VIDEOS ARE AWESOME, I SUBBED!!! 😍😍😍
Paint honestly right?
Omg Jon same lmao +Paint
Paint I was in my community theaters production of this
I don't really think about that world lucky me
Just...just goosebumps and tears, everybody.
Anybody loves Sebastian's part? "If only it were up to me, this whole world turns out right" It shows how Sebastian loves Ariel so much.
pinnate makes me cry
My favorite line is later on in the song towards the end where he says, "I'd give me life up to make it happen." Makes me teary every time.
I'm so excited to sing this. I'll be Sebastian in my High School production
"I'd give my life up to make it happen"
* "this all would turn out right"
Here is the lyrics
Ariel:
If only you could know
The things I long to say
If only I could tell you
What I wish I could convey
It's in my ev'ry glance
My heart's an open book
You'd see it all at once
If only you would look
If only you could glimpse
The feeling that I feel
If only you would notice
What I'm dying to reveal
The dreams I can't declare
The needs I can't deny
You'd understand them all
If only you would try
All my secrets, you would learn them
All my longings, you'd return them
Then the silence would be broken
Not a word would need be spoken
Prince Eric:
What is it about her
That's so wonderfully, impossibly familiar?
Why do I feel dizzy
In a way I've only felt but once before?
How come when she looks at me
It seems like time stops moving
Almost like the way it did that day upon the shore?
But that voice!
Ariel:
If only it were true
If only for a while
Eric:
Ah, that voice!
Ariel:
If only you would notice
How I ache beneath my smile
Eric:
Where's that voice?
Ariel:
I guess you never will
I guess it doesn't show
But if I never find a way to tell you so
Oh, what I would give
If only you could know
Sebastian(Spoken):
Bless ya, child. Tomorrow, the Prince will have his pick of any princess in the land! How can a little mermaid compete with that?
Sung
If only I knew how
I'd make him see the light
If only it were up to me
This all would turn out right
And if I only could
I'll tell you what I'd do
I'd simply wave my claw
And make your dreams come true
And wouldn't that surprise you
If you only knew
King Triton:
How could she just suddenly
Completely disappear into thin water?
It's been two whole days
And I don't know where she has gone!
Eric:
Ah, that voice!
King Triton:
If only you'd come home...
Sebastian:
If only I could help...
Eric:
Where's that voice?
Ariel:
If only there were time
I know we'd kiss at last
Eric:
That voice!
King Triton:
If only you'd come back
I'll change my ways!
Sebastian:
Just one more day for that kiss to come...
Ariel:
But time keeps racing forward
And our moment's almost passed!
King Triton:
I'll try to understand...
Ariel:
It has to happen now...
King Triton:
I'll keep my temper low...
Sebastian:
I'd give my life up to make it happen...
King Triton:
I should have started listening to you all along...
Eric:
How I wish that girl could have been this one!
Ariel:
There's only one more day until I have to go!
Eric:
If only...
Ariel, Sebastian & King Triton:
Oh, what I would give if only you could know...
Eric:
And at the ball
What will occur?
Maybe I'll find that voice
But I'll lose her...
Ariel:
If only...
Sebastian:
If only...
King Triton:
If only...
Ariel: If only you would notice how I ache behind my smile.
King Triton: I should have started listening to you long ago.

“i’d give my life up to make it happen” MAKES ME CRY EVERY TIME
It really shows how much Sebastian cares about Ariel, doesn’t it?
Yeah I want to cry to
sierra boggess is just flawless
shes pretty great
She has the voice of an angel
@@elainazimmerman5105 An angel of music.
@@Time-lord-jedi indeed
The Quartet is my favorite part of the show.
One of the prettiest Alan Menken melodies, and he's composed a great many pretty melodies.
WHY DOES SEBASTIAN'S PART MAKE ME WANT TO CRY!? GDI WHY!?
"I'd give my life up to make it happen" ACTUALLY kills me
Same with Triton’s part. It’s so sad.
Am I the only person who is in love Triton's voice? Goosebumps every time.
He played the Phantom on Broadway and Sierra Boggess was his Christine. He is magnificent.
Norm Lewis is amazing.
I love how the songs in the musical give the story more depth and motivation for the decisions that the characters make. Beautifully written and sung!
This song is so beautiful 💛 it gives so much more character development the movie can't! And the composition is just gorgeous too.
yep
That's exactly what I think. It so much more deep than in the movie and I am so glad they did it.
All the emotions in this song are in the films characters, but this expresses them so beautifully, it's moving. Well that's how I read it anyway
I love how they made Sebastian more caring in the musical. In the movie he is timid and basically Ariel's babysitter, but here he is loving and wants more than anything for her to get Eric.

Ariel is surrounded by amazing people!

"If only you would notice how I ache behind my smile"-it seems like any one who's ever had depression would understand that lyric
71crm yeah I understand it completely and I don't even have depression
Well, that's obviously true too.
Same bitch
the whole original cast is perfection
Anyone absolutely in love with Sebastian’s part?
There's just something about the line "How I wish that girl could have been this one" that just DRAGS me to tears
I think it's because it shows that Eric fell in love with her without her needing to say (or sing) a word
i love how from 3:31 onwards their parts are overlapping each other like how waves continuously crashing into each other. so good 😭
Counterpoint.
Polyphony.
“I’d give my life up to make it happen” sweetest lyric ever.
4:04 Love it. Chills everytime.
I can't be the only one who wishes this song had have been in the original movie. I hope Disney will put it in the new live action version of The Little Mermaid coming out soon. 😍🙏
ALL the Broadway version's songs must be in the movie lol maybe in a alternative universe
love how after Sebastian has the worst day of his life, he instantly forgives Ariel and gives her dating advice. My favorite song King Triton sings 3:17
3:17 alternate lyrics for Triton:

This song literally makes me cry. I seriously don't know why. It just gives me this level of emotion that I can't get from anything else
My absolute favorite song
when she says if only he could notice how i ache behind my smile, i felt that
I just finished playing Sebastian in this show (like yesterday) and I'm ready to cry tbh
Mel Lussier I finished the show back in January as ensemble and I’m still crying
I’m playing Ariel and this is honestly my favorite song in the entire show
Omg same girl
Same!!
Never thought I would cry over Broadway The Little Mermaid
*and yet here I am goddammit Disney*
My older brother is a Senior in high school and his school is doing The Little Mermaid for their musical and he is King Triton. I listen to this song every night and I cry because of the lyrics and what he has to sing. He will be leaving to college soon and I'm going to miss him a lot. Question to the musical nerds:

sounds like Sebastian read the book
This had me snorting with laughter. Like, the song is beautiful and I've come back to relisten more times than I can count, but geez Sebastian, chill.
I love how much Sebastian cares about Ariel
Saddest song ever!!
I can’t explain it but this song gives me every emotion you can think of in every way. Happiness sadness anger confusion and it is by far one of the most incredible songs I’ve ever heard it makes me cry every time I listen to it I really don’t know why but I feel like I’m in a different world when I’m singing this song or even just listening to it
melancholy is a powerful force and this song and the situation taps into it, of course, the original text it is based on as well
My favorite part! So pretty.
Where has this song been all my life and why have I only discovered it tonight? Aghhh I love it so much
Why aren't more people talking about this? It makes it a sort of amazing secret that only those who know can enjoy. I just learned about it from some friends and I can't stop listening to it. I wish I'd known about this song earlier but I probably wouldn't have appreciated it as much as I do currently. I looovvvee this song
Norm Lewis will forever be dad to us all
AlwaysGonnaSing our collective father
He should’ve been Mufasa in the remake
This song makes me keel over and cry
Oh gosh, I feel all reminiscent now! I was a Seagull in a community theatre production of this show. Our Ariel and Sebastian killed it!
Same, except I was a sea creature and a sailor. Also, Ariel and Sebastian killed it in ours too.
If only I could meet Sierra Boggess and tell her how she ROCKED this amazing song..
My favorite song in the musical ever! It makes me want too cry,but I can't. And I want to see Sawyer,Danny and their friends singing this.
You know, one thing I never understood is why Ariel didn't just write everything down on paper and just give it to him? Would've been so much quicker and easier for her.
Theresa Lee She knows how to sign her name on the contract, at least?
***** THATSAGREATPOINT! Im in Little Mermaid jr. and everyone is like she can't write. I forgot she wrote her name on the contract.
Halez the Dragon In an early story draft for the movie, Ariel waits until the last moment to write it all down for Eric -_-
I'm wondering if the early draft made Ariel blonde, too? -.-
Yeah, there was a debate on whether or not she should be blonde but the directors decided against it since Splash came out a few years before TLM did and Madison the mermaid was blonde in that movie ._.
I was part of a quartet that sang this last year and it was so fun
This is one of my favorite songs from the show.
We aren't talking enough about how utterly heartbreaking Triton's lines are. He realized how badly he messed up and is willing to do *anything* to get his daughter back. Can you imagine how terrified he must be? His little girl has just vanished, and he has no idea where she is or in what condition she is.

One of my favourite songs!
if only I could bring Robin Williams back
This song would have been great in the movie, don't you think?
Jordan Briskin hell yeah but where would you put it?
MrGabeanator
Right after the "Kiss the Girl" sequence, of course!
Jordan Briskin good idea
MrGabeanator yeah..when she is at her room... before Vanessa appears at the beach! :)
_God_ this is beautiful! 😀 Definitely my second favorite song in this entire musical, _right_ next to _Her Voice._ 😀😊😁😃🙂☺😗😘😍😉😎🤣😂
seriously this is the best voice ever for prince eric
What a fantastic song 🎵, if only this was part of the movie 🎥.
Everytime I listen to this I keep wanting more when it's over
im in love with prince eriks voice in this
Beautiful
Assigned audition piece, wish me luck, doing the King Triton part!
Same here! Doing Ariel's part. Break a leg!
Break a leg guys, I'll be going for the part of Ariel in our local theatre soon!
Did you get it bro?
Sean nah but I was a lot of smaller roles so I got to be in a ton of scenes. It was super fun
Love this song !!!!!!!❤️❤️I get emotional 😭 every time time I hear it!!!!!
I’m playing triton soon in this and words cannot express how excited I am!
Beautiful!!
He'd only marry venessa under a spell because voice or no voice he was in love with Ariel
In my schools production(before corona cancelled it) we changed sebastians part slightly and then made it a duet with grimsby. I think we also added in another harmony for grimsby but I can’t quite remember
Tribute to Samuel E. Wright the voice of Sebastian
It's songs like this that remind me why I love music!
My favorite little mermaid broadway song
I get chills everytime SOO GOOD
I understudied Prince Eric in this show (they gave the chance for understudies to perform some shows) and, at our theatre awards at the end of the year, the overstudies and understudies for these characters came together to perform this song one last time together.
This song makes me so emotional.
if only you would notice how I ache behind my smile. ugh that gets me.
Aww, heck's naw! These characters are going emotionally hard on this song. I feel it in my stomach!
Listens to TLM broadway song A: This is my favorite!
Listens to song B: OMG! Probably my favorite song!!
Listens to this: OKAY. THIS IS FINAL. IF ONLY IS MY FAVORITE SONG FROM THE MUSICAL. :D
This is like my favorite song ever! It is so amazing live.
if only you could notice how i ache behind my smile...that hits hard
I wish this was in the Jr. version. It would be 20% cooler then.
I lucked out. I'm playing Prince Eric for a local theatre's production and we added this song even though we're doing the junior version!
Ahhh I see what you did there 😉 Brohoof /)
***** I was in a version of Jr. They did this song and it was great. I'm sad I couldn't watch it because I had a scene after (ensemble).
I hate missing big numbers due to being in the next scene!! That is so cool that your director did that though!! :D
14yellowCupcakes There was a speaker in the dressing room, but it's not as good. It's the same way with I Want the Good Times Back. Thank god there was a DVD.
I really hope they put this song on the new live action with Halle Bailey and Jonah-Hauer King.
so a Quartet is which Sebastian says: "...one more day..." Did anyone any one else see that as an homage to Les Miserables?
Do you mean "Just one more day for that kiss to come"?
this has me crying everytime
Don't mind me, I'm just an adult at work weeping over Triton's "If only you'd come back, I'd change my ways" and Sebastian's "I'd give my life up to make it happen".
It's so beautiful and Emotional
Seriously I don't understand why they're remaking the movie.
The Broadway musical is the definitive live action adaptation.
musical adaptations of the disney animated films are definitely the real live-action adaptations!
Am I the only one who thinks that Sebastian is a better father figure for Ariel than Triton ever was?
My school did this and when this come on, it was so beautiful😊
Who else is also here after seeing The Little Mermaid Live?
Oof, gorgeous
Love this song
this song gives me chills and i have to sing it :O
I would cry if Ursula were to separate me (I’m sorry, Eric) from Ariel and hear her sing while I serve Ursula as her king and a slave
I Listen To This Song Every Single Day And Night Nonstop And I Was Ariel In My High School Production And I Was So Sad When I Hear This Now Cause My Play Is Over Now And I Am In Grade 9 And I Bet a grade 12th
