  • FPV drones have developed into some of the most technologically advanced machines! With lightning fast processing and powerful motors, small freestyle quads deliver incredible performance!
    ....But let's revisit how FPV drones used to be built. Big motors and props, Simon K ESCs, KK2 flight boards, and best of all WOOD FRAMES?!
    Shout out to Shawn (Let's Fly RC) for building these vintage drones for us.... and letting us crash them!

    So many people started with the tricopter. I don't think Windestål gets enough credit for the amount of people he inspired with his shenanigans.

    This was a fun trip down memory lane. kk2 was the new hotness when I started. I was a pretty big noob so I didn't figure out how to manipulate the flight controller, but I did do flips by whipping back and completely chopping the throttle so the board couldn't control anything while it was upside down then getting back on the throttle once it made it around. lol then a kk2.1.5 for a while then a vortex 250 pro right after those came out. kk2 is where I learned to fly, vortex is where I learned how to send it. Now I have a handful of quads that are more capable than I am.

  • @swissfreek
    @swissfreek 4 роки тому +5

    I love the memories this video brings back. It was really experimentation back then. The only reason I didn't start with KK2 is they were never in friggin' stock, so I ended up starting out with a CC3D on OpenPilot, which was a whole different animal from what other folks had.
    Drew and Shawn's comments about never flying with anyone back then is so true. You did all your learning in forums reading posts about other people's PIDs and experiences. And it sucked, because you'd fly 30 seconds, crash, go back online and start over. And all your real friends thought you were totally weird. OK, that part hasn't changed, haha.

    Such a cool history lesson. Flying 12 amp SimonK escs, KK2s, garbage props and wooden frames....we were just so amazed we could fly these things in any way. The ingenuity of this phase of FPV was so freakin exciting. I'm glad they mentioned David Windenstall, he was such a big factor with his tricopter and his FPV setups. My first board was the Naze32 on Clearflight, and it was such hot shit at the time. It's insane how far we've come!

  • @MrAaalie
    @MrAaalie 4 роки тому +8

    Started with a RCExplorer tricopter (David Windestal) and three separate gyro's (for heli-tail).
    After this it was an Arduino mini with the little PCB taken from a nunchuck controller. All "programmed" with the MultiWiiConfigurator.
    Fun times, and at that time it is hard to believe the performance and crash resistance we are now used to.

    Started RC flying in 2015 with a friend and my first build was a David Windestål tricopter, I CNC cut the frame out of delrin (polyacetal plastic) and had Naze32 on it. Back then 9 inch biblade prop was the norm :) That was still all custom power harness from wire with bullet connectors and dupont servo plugs but sometime after the "direct solder everything" school of thought started taking over. I think I still have the frame and some of the parts in a bin somewhere.

The last thing I flew before my daughter was born was an H-Frame Knuckle with a KK 2 and no FPV, all LOS. Fell out of the hobby when I crashed and ruined my board because money was just too tight. Picked up a Mavic Air 2 earlier this year for family stuff and started getting back into it then got a Tinyhawk Freestyle 2 after getting all my certs and stuff. I made a quad which I crashed so then I built a tricopter using legos to build a tilt. It flew amazing!
    I actually remember getting a KK board without a screen (with the vertical gyro) and I couldn’t get it to work with my TX because I had trouble with the FTDI. So fortunately the KK2.1.5 came out and I could get in the air.

    I started out with a Cheerson CX-10A, non-FPV quad that runs on a 100mAh battery, then Cheerson CX-20 GPS quad.
    But my intention was always FPV, so I bought HD2's over 3 years ago and started flying a Syma X5C clone with an AIO camera.
    Then some months after I learnt acro on FPV Freerirder and bought a Kingkong 90GT for some proper FPV, which led me on to the Kingkong ET100 & ET125, Aurora QAV105, Emax Hawk 5 and brushless whoops. Most of which still work perfectly.

    Awesome episode. Loved every stupid second of it. Watching Vanover do Mattys on a friggin' V-tail was the icing on the cake.

    You guys, I had such a great time watching this episode. In my opinion I love watching you guys going out as a family of friends having a good time. Poor Bardwell got the shitty end of the stick this time, poor Bardwell.
    My first anything that went in the air via remote control was the F550 Hexacopter. Every now and then I still like to plug it in and take it up in the air. I don’t go out to parks or fly anywhere in town, my neighbor has a dirtbike track and they don’t mind me flying there. I love their reaction when they hear Those 610 inch propellers ramping up on a power loop.
    Keep more videos like this coming!

    What an AMAZING episode!! Thank you guys so much for this!
    First time I saw a multicopter was at my local flying field, where all we flew there were airplanes and helis. Then one day a few of the guys started experimenting with some ridiculously bad-flying kk2 quads that could barely manage a circuit. Nonetheless, I was very intrigued by the copters and decided to research the subject matter a bit. Those guys were having loads of fun and laughing their butts off and I wanted in on the fun.
    We're down here in Brazil and none of those modellers spoke English well enough to be able to explore youtube content on multirotors. I went on youtube and discovered David Windestal, Bruce Simpson and the Naze 32 board. I ended up building a Hobbyking Talon tricopter with 10 inch props and a naze 32 board. When I showed up at the field, my tricopter flew extremely well and impressed the crap out of the other guys. Everyone immediately switched to the Naze 32 board and Baseflight. I later built an RC Explorer tricopter for line of sight flying which became one of my all-time favorite models (until I lost it to a lake). Even though the Naze copters flew badly by today's standards, back then they were my best flying model aircraft, period (as compared to all my other model airplanes). It was crazy how well they flew.
    Back then none of us was messing with FPV; it was strictly an LOS thing and the large size of the copters was a good thing.
    Best regards from Brasilia, Brazil.

    My first quad was a ZMR250 with a CC3D board...
    I'm really happy we have now stacks and a quad is build with less than 30 solder joints and that BetaFlight progressed so far...

    Amagad, I remember the kk2 controller, I had a wierd sandwich box as the base and protective "lid" :D I remember the sound of those ocillations and big ass props swinging! I just got back into the quads, normally i like to slope, but the tech just looks soooo much simpler now, I mean these "Stacks" with plug and play stuff... I has to have a new one :D No FPV back then though! Hillarious video, thank you!

    I had a frame made out of plywood and aluminium tubes, megapirate 16 bit FC, camera with 90 degree FOV, giant ass motors and 8+" props. After every crash i had to spend 15 minutes reattaching everything with zipties. I had to program escs with FTDI adapter, balance props that would explode on contact with grass, and use loud beeper to control voltage.
    Nowadays everything in FPV just works out of the box, it's so much better, yet people still complain about having to solder 20 wires per quad :D
    I sound like an old fart from 50 years ago, but all that happened only 5 years ago.

    Ahhh... I had those wooden crosses with MultiWii firmware as well. They could have been used for exorcism between two flights. And I'm 90% positive I had exactly the same motors with those cheap propellers that you can see at 7:34. Good old times! :-)

    Back in the day people weren’t really that interested in doing tricks. When I built my first quad in 2012 everyone mostly wanted to just have a stable, well flying platform for fpv or filming. And about the same time I believe gps support was added to multiiwii. So everyone’s goal then was to build a giant octocopter that would hover by itself and could do thing like return to home etc. And there was a ton of 10 minute long videos on the forums of people just taking off and putting the transmitter on the ground to show off how well their quad hovers. And generally back then your status on the forums was dictated by the size of your multicopter and the number of motors it had :P.

    I started before flitetest, built a giant thing with the original KK2. It was terrifying with 14" props and all the jello. There was no FPV and SimonK hadn't yet come out. I destroyed it every time I flew with an average survival time of about 20 mins.
