...adding to this. A compatibility checker. Ensure you have the right s-ratings selected, proper kv to pitch ratios, ecs/vtx/rx to fc ease of connection, etc!
You could start the builder off with a flying style and target budget tracker. It would only display the parts that fit these constraints. It would also do alot of what this video did. You get to find the gaps in inventory/options to meet those builds.
      Cheers!

This a very interesting topic. For a complete rookie in the hobby (a bit like me) it would help if the RR website could have some sort of wizard so that someone can easily have all parts for a full quad. On this wizard, it would only appear a few options for each component that are known to work OK together - RR top picks - (so we are not overwhelmed with options). One idea would be to have a pre-made selected builds, like "Budget" or "Advanced", so we can see the total price upfront while having the options to tune the selection for each component. One important option on the wizard would be to have the quad delivered assembled and pre-tuned (if RR have the means to offer this service). Also, don't forget to add a "must have accessories" section on the wizard, because some people don't have anything - solder iron, batteries, charger, voltage checker, tools, goggles, backpack, etc
As a final touch, the wizard could have "quick links" to replicate a build from the pilots we all know and love (Le Drib, Ummagawd, etc)
The goal with this wizard would be to streamline all the checkout process for new people in the hobby and make it quick and fun to have our dream quad. In sum, the wizard would be a sort of "virtual Bardwell" helping out :-)
Then you can even go even further, and after completing a purchase a new customer can be entered on an automated drip newsletter system and receive periodical links to tricks and tips videos by email which in turn can be catered depending on the customer profile (eg. newbies can start by receiving basic tutorials - like connecting to PC - while a more advanced shopper can skip the tutorials). Also, customers can then start to receive periodical emails depending on the choices they made on the wizard, such as "Need more CNHL batteries? Visit our store", "Time to upgrade to Fatshark HDO?", "Make it official. Check our swag selection and use RRPROUD coupon to get 10$ off" or just an email with links to the most popular RR UA-cam videos... the options are endless here.

Filipe D Hi filipe! If you are a rookie, i would reccomend not to start with a 5" quad. Get a whoop, such as the Mobula 7 and the progress to bigger quads. Make sure you practice on a simulator, eg. Velocidrone before flying! Hope this helped!

I do remember what I was struggling most with my first build: Insecurity. I watched about a hundred videos before I even starting to order parts and watched some more during the build. In the end my selection turned out to be really solid (except for a poor frame choice). I spent two days I won't get back on trying to get FrSky telemetry working on a Matek F405 because I did not want to use softserial. Wiring, soldering and configuring BLHeli and Betaflight was no problem for me. Space was. I thought I finally nailed it, then I tried an extremely tight racing frame and just fitting everything cost me a lot of time. Prop choices can still be very frustrating because no science can help you with that, except maybe ruling out too high or low pitched ones.

I have not done a updated build in a long time. That is exactly how it goes you pick your frame and all your parts for your build.
You try to order from your parts list ,and wola the parts you want are out of stock or on back order. So you try 2nd choice or 3rd choice and kinda get the build you wanted or wait for ever for parts to stock.I am leaning very heavy towards ready to fly quads. Love to build but hate placing 10 different orders an places. Liked the video thumbs up guys.

I'm ~15 builds into the hobby, and if the quad takes 4 hours to build, 3.5 of those hours are stacking/re-stacking the stack. Welcome to FPV Chad! :)
To all, your USB cable must have USB data symbol for it to support data. USB symbol is the dots, triangle, square connected by lines, kinda looks like a lightning bolt. More like a circuit board bus. Hence usB.... ;) If your USB cable doesn't have this symbol it may still support data. 100% of cables that have the symbol will support data.

My biggest hang-ups have to do with where to place and mount stuff. Where to put the vtx and receiver. It's still a problem to get it done cleanly. 3D printed parts helps. Also, the XT60 placement was a huge challenge when I first started. It took a long time to finally figure out how to keep it out of the props.

Having said that there is ample content on this already on the Tube. Entertaining none the less, thanks.

  • @MrStevegibb

My biggest piece of advice for a first build is don't try to do it in one sitting.
You will start of doing things perfectly and then after a couple of hours you will get tired and start cutting corners.
Get yourself a box to keep the unfinished quad in and when you get tired put the build up for the night and complete it the next day.
Its worth taking your time with the original build as i rarely recommend messing with a well flying quad even if something looks messy. A flight proven build is worth 20 fresh builds.

    • @RotorRiot

At 42:42, always test your FC first. Use the USB when you pull it out of the box and connect to BF before you ever start the build to make sure its working. I never saw you plug it in to a PC, looked like you and JB open all the parts just go to soldering. And you guys are the PROS!!! :) Excellent video Chad. I like your thought train on this. Its good to have good info providers at your disposal.

Lots of good info here. For my first custom quad I just copied Steeles build and rates. Coming from an eachine wizard it was like night and day. Good discussion guys. Maybe do a little talk about pre-testing the FC, Buying/building and using a Smokestopper, for the 1st power up process.
I would highly recommend putting some nylon nuts on the FC. one bad hit and that's going up against carbon or another part and it's going to burn.
It's generally poor practice not bolting or otherwise securing anything in, these little machines see some serious G's in flight and scary crazy G's on a hard hit. Anything not secure is going to move.
Looking forward to the next stage....

Great video. Total noob here. Still trying to figure it all out. Figuring out what motors go with 3, 4, and 5 inch blades and why is a struggle. What ESC’s go good with what flight controllers isn’t strait forward and I know that depends on what battery (3,4 or 6s). On and on. Would be nice in the product description of any given part that it pair well with what ever else to help lead people down the path. But looking forward to getting into it all.

    • @Scarecrow_Jenkins

We are going to attempt something very similar to this. It's kind of a weird problem to solve since there is not yet a standard connector for fc's and esc's. Technically most fc's and esc's will work with each other, but often you'll have to rearrange the wires to make sure they go to the proper place between them, which often involves stabbing yourself with tweezers repeatedly and risking ruining the connectors. We have spoken about a build guide with parts that are proven to work well together, we'll make sure everyone knows about it once it's implemented. If integration of a site feature proves to be impossible, we'll DEFINITELY make sure to cover it more thoroughly in a build video at the very least. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching!

The way I got started is by first buying a pre-built 3" quad. This approach allowed me to divide the learning curve into two steps: since I had fully functioning H/W right out of the box I only had to master betaflight at first. Then, as things were breaking I started experimenting with new flight controllers, props, buzzers, cameras, different battery sizes, etc. Meanwhile I feel confident enough to step out and build my own. In my case, this entire process took about 6 months... there is a lot of information that needs to be digested. And yes, learning to fly FPV takes some time too, so learning to build and learning to fly should ideally be synchronized.

Gorilla tape is great for quad repair and antenna strengthening. I use it to protect my motor wires and to secure the flight stack when I break a nylon mount. I put a piece along where the battery strap makes contact with the sharp carbon and my straps last forever.
You can even use G Tape AS a battery strap. You just need to make sure the adhesive side never sticks to a surface mount electronic component. I've ripped 2 capacitors and 1 diode with one pull of the tape. I need to send that VTX to Louis Rossman. Lol

Two things, if I may. I commend you on this type of video. Covering these details that most newbies are unaware of is important. 1. Newbies do not know what all the acronyms stand for. Explaining those would help. I noticed that some were covered by on-screen notes. 2. Many of the suggestions provided, such as what type of flying do you do etc, (as was described is what I would be interested) are very helpful. But the final question would be: What did the final cost come to be if one were to order such a quad as listed? Thank you for these videos. They are very helpful.
On a second subject, it was mentioned that such a build should not be attempted by a newbie. About a week ago a video came out on the redi-built quads that had prop shields. Would those be recommended instead? Another video I enjoyed. Thanks to all.

Unibody is great. It's lighter. As far as vibration get rid of the bad bearings and you'll be fine. Dal T5040C are the best noise free prop I've used to date. Anyone out there prove me wrong. second place is maybe HQ5X4.3V1 which is an awsome prop

    • @JustInvertedFpv
      @JustInvertedFpv 5 років тому

I was a big fan of the dal5040c and ran them for ages. They fly really well but they are not resilient in crashes. I was never into hq props until I tried a set of the Ethix S3. Been running them exclusively since I tried that first set. They are even more snappy and responsive than the dal5040c and on top of that are very durable and seem to take crashes and even bend back very well and remain flyable. I thought the reduced pitch would be an issue but they don't seem to suffer any less thrust in the air. Throttle response is very linear and smooth as well.

      @prrcpor 5 років тому

@@JustInvertedFpv well the regular ones are good but the T in T5040C is specific I think. Anytime I'm tuning for 6s they just fly good easy to tune. And the HQs 5x4.3 aren't far off.

What I struggled with the most is the motor size, and kv. When I picked the parts for my first quad I just went with "what motors for a 5 inch quad" on google and used what came up. Theres so many factors that play in how a quad feels with a specific motor, prop, voltage, weight of the quad, etc.

Great video guys, actually I loved the discussion on bi-blades vs try-blades, 'cause it is exactly as Chad said, sometimes, people who know better just do not explain the why's to the beginners. However, just a quick note, bi-blades are actually more difficult to balance than try-blades, 'cause both blades in a bi-blade prop are diametrically opposed, so any difference in weight distribution between them, maximizes the unbalance. The more blades you add, the more forgiving the prop becomes to unbalance (damage while flying for example). That is why it was so difficult to have yellow-free video in 6-inch or 7-inch builds, 'cause we only had bi-blades for those sizes. Nevertheless, you can have very good balanced bi-blade props (look at DJI for example), you just have to do an extra effort when manufacturing the prop.

This was nicely planned out and (I feel) your goal was achieved. After decades of rc myself, the market is so oversaturated with choices for anything a person can want or need its overwhelming. Getting the right parts for ones budget is mind boggling. Chad had access to some pro's to help with his choices. Most people don't get that opportunity. I would suggest have these same guys put together complete packages with everything a new person...or anyone would need to complete the build. These kits can start priced on extreme budget build and everything in-between to the skys the limit. Have these guys do actual build vids of said kits, send them out to reviewers as well. You could help a lot of people out and more then likely make RR's business be all it can be in the process. 2 tips I can offer you though, keep the parts in stock. Its so frustrating to be all ready to buy something and, out of stock, cant make money w/o the stock to sell. 2) Include a legit data usb cable in the kits -;) Again, thanks for the enjoyable segment, I felt it was time well spent. Thumbs-up Gentlemen!

Nice effort to help new people out.! 👍 One critique though. You don't want mid throttle oscillations but then you don't put any nuts on to hold the flight controller down. It will move eventually after lots of use and crashing but by then you'll have forgotten that you left the nuts off and will spend frustrating time trying to figure out why suddenly it's oscillating on you. Put some nuts on Kapper, you bought a whole kit with that stuff in it.

My issue was buying RTF quads and not knowing how to fly. I have 2 Racing quads sitting while the kid and I learned on the sim this past winter, now we are graduating here soon to the tinyhawk, then hopefully to a 3" racer... then maybe the 5" racers we have sitting lol once we become proficient at flying. I definitely put the cart before the horse and struggled but... because of this type of content I am sure others will not make the same mistakes I made. Flying is not easy but can be learned in order to enjoy this community. Also... love the micro's as they allow for everyday flight for us so we do not agitate those who have no idea what fpv is. Also micro's allow for us to stay under our the 250g mark.

I agree with the captain a check list or “build assistant” feature on the site would be super helpful. Just select what kind of quad you want to build and it would walk through all the components you need to build it.
